The foggara in the Algerian Sahara has often been portrayed as a traditional ingenious but immutable irrigation system incapable of keeping up with the radical socioeconomic and environmental transformations of the 20th and 21st centuries. Yet, oasis populations continue to use a large number of foggaras. The aim of this study was to reveal the importance of institutions in adapting and preserving the living character of foggaras. Adapting the physical infrastructure and the institutions governing the use of contemporary foggaras are key to adapt to change, weaving different threads of tradition and modernity to maintain collective action and keep the foggaras flowing. We show that Ostrom’s design principles are not only an interesting lens to explore the durability of long-standing self-governing irrigation systems, but also, when these principles are challenged, to characterize transformations of the foggara at a time of contested change.

The modelling of contact processes between hosts is of key importance in epidemiology. Current studies have mainly focused on networks with stationary structures, although we know these structures to be dynamic with continuous appearance and disappearance of links over time. In the case of moving individuals, the contact network cannot be established. Individual-based models (IBMs) can simulate the individual behaviours involved in the contact process. However, with very large populations, they can be hard to simulate and study due to the computational costs. We use the moment approximation (MA) method to approximate a stochastic IBM with an aggregated deterministic model. We illustrate the method with an application in animal epidemiology: the spread of the highly pathogenic virus H5N1 of avian influenza in a poultry flock. The MA method is explained in a didactic way so that it can be reused and extended. We compare the simulation results of three models: 1. an IBM, 2. a MA, and 3. a mean-field (MF). The results show a close agreement between the MA model and the IBM. They highlight the importance for the models to capture the displacement behaviours and the contact processes in the study of disease spread. We also illustrate an original way of using different models of the same system to learn more about the system itself, and about the representation we build of it.

Abstract Cognitive impairments have been reported in astronauts during spaceflights and documented in ground-based models of simulated microgravity (SMG) in animals. However, the neuronal causes of these behavioral effects remain largely unknown. We explored whether adult neurogenesis, known to be a crucial plasticity mechanism supporting memory processes, is altered by SMG. Adult male Long-Evans rats were submitted to the hindlimb unloading model of SMG. We studied the proliferation, survival and maturation of newborn cells in the following neurogenic niches: the subventricular zone (SVZ)/olfactory bulb (OB) and the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus, at different delays following various periods of SMG. SMG exposure for 7 days, but not shorter periods of 6 or 24 h, resulted in a decrease of newborn cell proliferation restricted to the DG. SMG also induced a decrease in short-term (7 days), but not long-term (21 days), survival of newborn cells in the SVZ/OB and DG. Physical exercise, used as a countermeasure, was able to reverse the decrease in newborn cell survival observed in the SVZ and DG. In addition, depending on the duration of SMG periods, transcriptomic analysis revealed modifications in gene expression involved in neurogenesis. These findings highlight the sensitivity of adult neurogenesis to gravitational environmental factors during a transient period, suggesting that there is a period of adaptation of physiological systems to this new environment.

Phytocannabinoids, including the non-addictive cannabis component cannabidivarin (CBDV), have been reported to hold therapeutic potential in several neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). Nonetheless, the therapeutic value of phytocannabinoids for treating Fragile X syndrome (FXS), a major NDD, remains unexplored. Here, we characterized the neurobehavioral effects of CBDV at doses of 20 or 100 mg/kg in the Fmr1-knockout (Fmr1-KO) mouse model of FXS using two temporally different intraperitoneal regimens: subchronic 10-day delivery during adulthood (Study 1: rescue treatment) or chronic 5-week delivery at adolescence (Study 2: preventive treatment). Behavioral tests assessing FXS-like abnormalities included anxiety, locomotor, cognitive, social and sensory alterations. Expression of inflammatory and plasticity markers was investigated in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. When administered during adulthood (Study 1), the effects of CBDV were marginal, rescuing at the lower dose only the acoustic hyper-responsiveness of Fmr1-KO mice and at both doses their altered hippocampal expression of neurotrophins. When administered during adolescence (Study 2), CBDV at both doses prevented the cognitive, social and acoustic alterations of adult Fmr1-KO mice and modified the expression of several inflammatory brain markers in both wild-type littermates and mutants. These findings warrant the therapeutic potential of CBDV for preventing neurobehavioral alterations associated with FXS, highlighting the relevance of its early administration.

RESUMO O artigo aborda dois inquéritos lançados nos anos 1920, organizados pelo jornal O Estado de S. Paulo (OESP), em 1926, e pela Associação Brasileira de Educação (ABE), em 1929, que tratam do ensino superior brasileiro. Em ambos, os respondentes refletiram sobre a possibilidade de criação de universidades no Brasil, suas finalidades e as formas que deveriam tomar. Partindo da hipótese de que os usos das noções de “elite” indiciam os significados políticos associados à formação de centros de alta cultura, investigou-se a que correntes de pensamento político se atam aos diagnósticos e às proposições formulados nos respectivos inquéritos. Concluiu-se que o inquérito da Associação Brasileira de Educação foi orientado pelo pensamento nacionalista de Alberto Torres e vislumbrou a criação de uma universidade nacional, enquanto o inquérito de 1926, na parte dedicada ao ensino secundário e superior, baseou-se no regionalismo de Júlio de Mesquita Filho, projetando a fundação de uma universidade paulista.

O artigo trata de uma experiência de pesquisa e escrita de história e filosofia da educação, que nos anos 1960 e 1970 tomou lugar na Universidade de São Paulo e nos Institutos Isolados de Ensino Superior, sob a orientação de Laerte Ramos de Carvalho. Esta experiência, que criou uma discernível tradição no campo de estudos historiográficos da educação brasileira, definiu seus temas à luz de problemas educacionais e políticos de seu tempo, assim como de concepções filosóficas, teorias da história, partições epistemológicas e disciplinares que então configuravam o modelo universitário. Pelo modo como se organizou para propor, produzir e divulgar a escrita da história, essa geração marcou esse campo em formação com características particulares, que incluem a preferência por determinados tipos de fontes, modos de periodizar e narrar os eventos históricos. A análise historiográfica proposta combina a compreensão textual e contextual dessa tradição, considerando as condições institucionais e disciplinares tanto quanto as ambiências social, intelectual e política em que essas narrativas se produziram.

Este artigo explora o caráter elitista da maçonaria, enfatizando o lugar da educação em seu ideário e prática como uma estratégia de distinção social e acumulação de capital de uso interno. Tomando como categoria de análise a noção de elite, elabora uma prosopografia de expoentes maçons entre 1912 e 1932, apontando a natureza e o volume dos capitais que perfazem um perfil comum, e examina, à luz da sociologia de Bourdieu, a proposta e a experiência das escolas da Loja Sete de Setembro, destinadas às crianças pobres, filhos de operários e estrangeiros. Os dados biográficos e as informações sobre a escola provêm da publicação A Maçonaria no Estado de São Paulo (1912-1932). Conclui-se que nas mais altas posições na hierarquia maçônica encontram-se detentores de significativos capitais econômicos, sociais, políticos, indicando haver homologia e reconversões entre os campos; que o empenho na instrução das classes subalternas respondia a exigências filantrópicas do grupo, revertendo em prestígio e distinção para promotores individuais e para a própria maçonaria.

Neste artigo interpretam-se discursos de engenheiros e formandos, proferidos em sessões solenes da Escola Politécnica de São Paulo entre 1899 e 1910. As fontes são analisadas à luz do desenvolvimento histórico da instituição, das referências organizacionais e simbólicas que toma das congêneres europeias e das relações dos engenheiros com a sociedade. A análise do imaginário social desse agrupamento evidencia que as instituições de ensino superior são espaços de formação e sociabilidade que instituem memórias, identidades e representações sociais que, internamente cultivadas e repetidas em suas cerimônias de colação de grau, mantêm elucidativas correspondências com a condição social objetiva e as aspirações políticas da categoria profissional que se incumbem de formar.Palavras-chave: Escola Politécnica de São Paulo, memória, história do ensino superior. The sources are analyzed in light of the historical development of the institution, the organizational and symbolic references that arise from similar European references, and the relations of engineers to society. O artigo trata da Memória sobre a Reforma dos Estudos na Capitania de São Paulo, de Martim Francisco Ribeiro de Andrada, publicada em 1815 ou 1816, e elaborada originalmente para implantação na Capitania de São Paulo. Busca-se proceder à análise historiográfica do documento, considerado no momento histórico de sua elaboração, à luz da mentalidade de sua geração, do gênero da obra e do diálogo que estabelece com o debate iluminista. Tendo recebido parecer desfavorável à sua execução, o texto foi posteriormente apresentado por ele próprio - agora na condição de deputado - à Comissão de Instrução da primeira Assembleia Constituinte do Brasil independente (1823-1824), como proposta de elaboração de um sistema nacional de instrução. Identificam-se no documento os elementos que denotam ter havido apropriação do debate pedagógico da Revolução Francesa. Há uma inequívoca semelhança, inclusive formal, entre esta Memória de Martim Francisco e as Cinco Memórias sobre a Instrução Pública, redigidas por Condorcet, as quais deram suporte teórico ao Relatório da Assembleia Nacional (1791-1792) na França Revolucionária.

O presente artigo objetiva retraçar o itinerário da Faculdade de Educação (USP) procurando, a partir da experiência dos sujeitos, articular história e memória. Organiza-se em três partes: a primeira abrange a década de 1930, tempo de criação do Instituto de Educação de São Paulo e fundação da USP. A segunda, entre 1940 e 1960, trata da acomodação do antigo instituto na Seção de Pedagogia da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras. A terceira debruça-se sobre a FEUSP em seu percurso mais recente. Buscou-se recuperar as tradições que estiveram na origem da instituição, seus desdobramentos ao longo do tempo e os modos como aqueles que a constituíram enfrentaram os desafios que cada período colocou.

Neste artigo, propõe-se uma análise dos artigos sobre o ensino secundário, publicados na Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos (RBEP) ao longo dos anos de 1950. Investigam-se as críticas feitas por seus colaboradores à organização dada pela Lei Orgânica do Ensino Secundário (1942) a ramo do ensino médio, assim como as principais propostas de reforma, visando a torná-lo mais ativo, mais prático e mais popular. O objetivo principal é investigar que novo padrão de ensino secundário se projetava da combinação dos argumentos, como ideal para o ensino secundário brasileiro nos anos 1950. Tais necessidades se justificavam pela ideia de que o mundo vinha sendo regido por "novos imperativos" culturais, que a escola brasileira deveria adotar a fim de fomentar o desenvolvimento do país.This article proposes an analysis of the articles on secondary school published in the Revista Brasileira de Estudos Pedagógicos (RBEP, Brazilian Journal of Pedagogical Studies) over the 1950s. The study investigates the criticism made by its collaborators to the organization provided by the Lei Orgânica do Ensino Secundário (Organic Law of Secondary School; 1942) to middle school, as well as the main proposals of reform, in an attempt to make it more active, practical and popular. The main objective is to investigate which was the new standard of secondary education being projected from the combination of arguments as the ideal in Brazil in the 1950s. Such needs were justified by the idea that the world was being ruled by "new cultural imperatives" that should be adopted by the Brazilian school in order to encourage the development of the country.

This article presents the educational speech of O Estado de S. Paulo after the Estado Novo, articulating its update to the changes of the journalism. The reforms enterprise and graphical developed from 1945, aimed to the modernization of the periodical and the increment of its sales. That had lead to the predominance of the notice and news articles in detriment of the opinion, transforming the editorials into privileged places for its manifestation. The new politics of conscription of collaborators, in turn, brought of the College of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of the University of São Paulo (USP) some of its first “bacharéis”. That allowed that the intellectuals of the USP, by means of the writings of Laerte Ramos de Carvalho, converted its ideas on secondary education into “clarified public opinion”.

This paper gathers information and analyses on “The Brazilian education and the periods it can be divided in”, a document of great relevance for the historiography of the Brazilian education. As it contains an original proposal for assigning the periods of the history of education in Brazil, the text written by Laerte Ramos de Carvalho condenses the guidelines he asserts to the teaching and research of History and Philosophy of Education in the College of Philosophy, Sciences and Literature of the University of São Paulo in the 1950’s and 60’s. The analysis also includes information about the context when the first edition of the document was produced and released.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta a trajetória da cadeira de Filosofia e História da Educação, desde a sua constituição em 1933 até 1962, quando, na Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da Universidade de São Paulo, o professor Laerte Ramos de Carvalho deu início às primeiras pesquisas acadêmicas em história da educação. Explora fatores "internos" e "externos" da história das disciplinas, tais como os perfis institucionais, as prescrições curriculares, as disputas ocorridas no mundo acadêmico e as relações entre as "disciplinas vizinhas", a fim de tecer uma rede de personagens e acontecimentos que confira à disciplina a sua "identidade histórica". O artigo trata das relações pessoais e institucionais desencadeadas pelo ato de incorporação da Escola de Professores do extinto Instituto de Educação à Seção de Educação da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da Universidade de São Paulo. Os episódios narrados concernem à divisão de funções e de status na unidade formada nessa incorporação, pelos quais se pretende mostrar que, para além dos argumentos racionais e das justificativas de ordem epistemológica, os cursos de Pedagogia e de Didática tiveram seus destinos definidos na configuração do campo devido a uma conjunção de fatores, tais como disputas internas pelo poder na universidade, interesses profissionais dos discentes, rivalidades entre as áreas do conhecimento e lutas por status. Sugere-se que a condição desses cursos, tidos como inferiores e até mesmo inúteis no recinto da universidade, guarda certa relação com os conflitos e acomodações alimentados por tais fatoresThis article deals with the personal and institutional relationships unleashed by the incorporation of the Teachers' Education School of the former Institute of Education into the Education Department of the Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras of the Universidade de São Paulo. The episodes reported concern the division of functions and status in the unit resulting from this incorporation, they show that, beyond the rational arguments and justifications of an epistemological nature, the Pedagogy and Didactics programs have been defined in the configuration of the field due to a conjunction of factors, such as internal disputes for power at the university, students' professional interests, rivalries between the fields of knowledge and struggles for status. It points out that the position of these programs, considered as being of lesser importance and even useless within the university, has a relationship with these conflicts and accommodations

We investigated the neural bases of navigation based on spatial or sequential egocentric representation during the completion of the starmaze, a complex goal-directed navigation task. In this maze, mice had to swim along a path composed of three choice points to find a hidden platform. As reported previously, this task can be solved by using two hippocampal-dependent strategies encoded in parallel i) the allocentric strategy requiring encoding of the contextual information, and ii) the sequential egocentric strategy requiring temporal encoding of a sequence of successive body movements associated to specific choice points. Mice were trained during one day and tested the following day in a single probe trial to reveal which of the two strategies was spontaneously preferred by each animal. Imaging of the activity-dependent gene c-fos revealed that both strategies are supported by an overlapping network involving the dorsal hippocampus, the dorsomedial striatum (DMS) and the medial prefrontal cortex. A significant higher activation of the ventral CA1 subregion was observed when mice used the sequential egocentric strategy. To investigate the potential different roles of the dorsal hippocampus and the DMS in both types of navigation, we performed region-specific excitotoxic lesions of each of these two structures. Dorsal hippocampus lesioned mice were unable to optimally learn the sequence but improved their performances by developing a serial strategy instead. DMS lesioned mice were severely impaired, failing to learn the task. Our data support the view that the hippocampus organizes information into a spatio-temporal representation, which can then be used by the DMS to perform goal-directed navigation.

Este artigo apresenta o discurso educacional de O Estado de S. Paulo após o Estado Novo, articulando sua atualização às mudanças do jornalismo. As reformas empresarial e gráfica vividas a partir de 1945, que visavam à modernização do jornal e ao incremento de suas vendagens, conduziram à predominância das notícias e reportagens em detrimento da opinião, transformando os editoriais em lugares privilegiados para a sua manifestação. A nova política de recrutamento de colaboradores, por sua vez, trouxe da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da Universidade de São Paulo (USP) alguns de seus primeiros bacharéis, o que permitiu que os intelectuais da USP, por meio dos escritos de Laerte Ramos de Carvalho, convertessem suas idéias sobre o ensino secundário em “opinião pública esclarecida”.

Este artigo aborda relações conflituosas entre intelectuais protagonizadas por João Cruz Costa, catedrático de Filosofia da Universidade de São Paulo. A primeira delas, marcada pela rivalidade entre a Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da Universidade de São Paulo e o Instituto Brasileiro de Filosofia; a segunda, caracterizada pelo “parricídio” que teve lugar no próprio departamento de Filosofia, alimentado pela luta em torno do legado da missão francesa; na terceira, pode-se ver Cruz Costa transitar pelas fronteiras disciplinares que separam os mundos da Filosofia e da História.

Resumo Trata-se de análise histórica do manifesto de educadores “Mais uma vez convocados: manifesto ao povo e ao governo” (1959), divulgado em resposta à irrupção de um substitutivo ao projeto de Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação. Examina os alicerces de sua memória, interrogando as razões e os efeitos da predominante explicação por meio de suas relações com o Manifesto dos Pioneiros e a Campanha em Defesa da Escola Pública. Reconstrói eventos, agentes e significados, compreendendo-os como ação coletiva e coordenada de intelectuais para fins políticos determinados. Conclui-se realçando o manifesto em sua especificidade e historicidade, aparando equívocos historiográficos resultantes de repetições sem lastro e abordagens que produziram lacunas em sua compreensão como evento singular.
