The formation and evolution of cold diffuse clouds (CDCs), the parent objects of dense molecular clouds, affects both the star formation process and that of larger-scale galactic evolution. We have begun a pilot study of one CDC's dust content, with the goal of quantifying the abundances of different types of dust and relating these to the relative abundance of molecular gas, the cloud's physical properties, and its general stage of development. Using photometry from AKARI and other surveys, we have extracted a sample spectral energy distribution (SED) of the CDC dust thermal emission over the near-infrared to submillimeter range. The extracted SED closely resembles others in the literature, confirming our isolation of the cloud emission from other sources along the sight line. Emission from carbon monoxide (CO) is ubiquitously used as a tracer of dense star forming molecular clouds. There is, however, growing evidence that a significant fraction of CO emission originates from diffuse molecular gas. Quantifying the contribution of diffuse CO-emitting gas is vital for understanding the relation between molecular gas and star formation. We examine the Galactic distribution of two CO-emitting gas components, a high column density component detected in 13CO and 12CO, and a low column density component detected in 12CO, but not in 13CO. The "diffuse" and "dense" components are identified using a combination of smoothing, masking, and erosion/dilation procedures, making use of three large-scale 12CO and 13CO surveys of the Inner and Outer Milky Way. The diffuse component, which globally represents 25 (1.5x1e8 Mo) of the total molecular gas mass (6.5x1e8 Mo), is more extended perpendicular to the Galactic plane. The fraction of diffuse gas increases from 15% at a galactocentric radius of 3 kpc to 50% at 15 kpc, and increases with decreasing surface density. In the Inner Galaxy, a yet denser component traced by CS emission represents 14% of the total molecular gas mass traced by 12CO emission. Only 14% of the molecular gas mass traced by 12CO emission is identified as part of molecular clouds in 12CO surveys by cloud identification algorithms. We have mapped cold atomic gas in 21cm line HI self-absorption (HISA) at arcminute resolution over more than 90% of the Milky Way's disk. To probe the formation of H2 clouds, we have compared our HISA distribution with CO J=1-0 line emission. Few HISA features in the outer Galaxy have CO at the same position and velocity, while most inner-Galaxy HISA has overlapping CO. But many apparent inner-Galaxy HISA-CO associations can be explained as chance superpositions, so most inner-Galaxy HISA may also be CO-free. Since standard equilibrium cloud models cannot explain the very cold HI in many HISA features without molecules being present, these clouds may instead have significant CO-dark H2., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, to appear in proceedings of IAU Symposium 315, "From Interstellar Clouds to Star-Forming Galaxies: Universal Processes?"

We present a new catalogue of spectrophotometric distances and line-of-sight systemic velocities to 103 HII regions between 90$^{\circ}\leq \ell \leq~$195$^{\circ}$ (longitude quadrants II and part of III). Two new velocities for each region are independently measured using 1-arcminute resolution 21~cm HI and 2.6~mm $^{12}$CO line maps (from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey and FCRAO Outer Galaxy Surveys) that show where gaseous shells are observed around the periphery of the ionized gas. Known and neighbouring OB-type stars with published UBV photometry and MK classifications are overlaid onto 21~cm continuum maps, and those stars observed within the boundary of the HII emission (and whose distance is not more than 3 times the standard deviation of the others) are used to calculate new mean stellar distances to each of the 103 nebulae. Using this approach of excluding distance outliers from the mean distance to a group of many stars in each HII region lessens the impact of anomalous reddening for certain individuals. Final mean distances of 9 common objects with VLBI parallax distances show a 1:1 correspondence. Further, comparison with previous catalogues of HII regions in these quadrants shows a 50% reduction in scatter for the distance to Perseus spiral arm objects in the same region, and a reduction by $\sim$1/$\sqrt{2}$ in scatter around a common angular velocity relative to the Sun $\Omega-\Omega_0$(km~s$^{-1}$~kpc$^{-1}$). The purpose of the catalogue is to provide a foundation for more detailed large-scale Galactic spiral structure and dynamics (rotation curve, density wave streaming) studies in the 2$^{\textrm{nd}}$ and 3$^{\textrm{rd}}$ quadrants, which from the Sun's location is the most favourably viewed section of the Galaxy., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal, May 27, 2014

We generate synthetic HI Galactic plane surveys from spiral galaxy simulations which include stellar feedback processes. Compared to a model without feedback we find an increased scale height of HI emission (in better agreement with observations) and more realistic spatial structure (including supernova blown bubbles). The synthetic data show HI self-absorption with a morphology similar to that seen in observations. The density and temperature of the material responsible for HI self-absorption is consistent with observationally determined values, and is found to be only weakly dependent on absorption strength and star formation efficiency., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Magnetically aligned velocity anisotropy over varying physical conditions and environments within the Taurus Molecular Cloud is evaluated from analysis of wide field spectroscopic imaging of 12CO and 13CO J=1-0 emission. Such anisotropy is a result of MHD turbulence in the strong magnetic field regime and provides an indirect measure of the role of magnetic fields upon the gas. Velocity anisotropy aligned with the local, projected mean magnetic field direction is limited to fields with low surface brightness 12CO emission corresponding to regions of low visual extinction and presumably, low gas volume density. The more optically thin 13CO J=1-0 emission shows little evidence for velocity anisotropy. We compare our results with computational simulations with varying degrees of magnetic field strength and Alfvenic Mach numbers. In the diffuse, molecular envelope of the cloud, a strong magnetic field and sub-Alfvenic turbulent motions are inferred. Super-Alfvenic motions are present within the high column density filaments of the Taurus cloud. From this trans-Alfvenic flow, we constrain the scaling exponent, kappa, of the magnetic field density relation (B ~ n^kappa) to be near zero as expected for ambipolar diffusion or material loading of magnetic flux tubes., Comment: submitted to MNRAS

Turbulence plays a major role in the formation and evolution of molecular clouds. The problem is that turbulent velocities are convolved with the density of an observed region. To correct for this convolution, we investigate the relation between the turbulence spectrum of model clouds, and the statistics of their synthetic observations obtained from Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We apply PCA to spectral maps generated from simulated density and velocity fields, obtained from hydrodynamic simulations of supersonic turbulence, and from fractional Brownian motion fields with varying velocity, density spectra, and density dispersion. We examine the dependence of the slope of the PCA structure function, alpha_PCA, on intermittency, on the turbulence velocity (beta_v) and density (beta_n) spectral indexes, and on density dispersion. We find that PCA is insensitive to beta_n and to the log-density dispersion sigma_s, provided sigma_s < 2. For sigma_s>2, alpha_PCA increases with sigma_s due to the intermittent sampling of the velocity field by the density field. The PCA calibration also depends on intermittency. We derive a PCA calibration based on fBms with sigma_s<2 and apply it to 367 CO spectral maps of molecular clouds in the Galactic Ring Survey. The average slope of the PCA structure function, =0.62\pm0.2, is consistent with the hydrodynamic simulations and leads to a turbulence velocity exponent =2.06\pm0.6 for a non-intermittent, low density dispersion flow. Accounting for intermittency and density dispersion, the coincidence between the PCA slope of the GRS clouds and the hydrodynamic simulations suggests beta_v~1.9, consistent with both Burgers and compressible intermittent turbulence.

We have carried out a pilot study for the SCUBA-2 'All-Sky' Survey, SASSy, a wide and shallow mapping project at 850 microns, designed to find rare objects, both Galactic and extragalactic. Two distinct sets of exploratory observations were undertaken, and used to test the SASSy approach and data reduction pipeline. The first was a 0.5 by 0.5 degrees map around the nearby galaxy NGC 2559. The galaxy was easily detected at 156 mJy, but no other convincing sources are present in the map. Comparison with other galaxies with similar wavelength coverage indicates that NGC 2559 has relatively warm dust. The second observations cover 1 square degree around the W5-E HII region. As well as diffuse structure in the map, a filtering approach was able to extract 27 compact sources with signal-to-noise greater than 6. By matching with data at other wavelengths we can see that the SCUBA-2 data can be used to discriminate the colder cores. Together these observations show that the SASSy project will be able to meet its original goals of detecting new bright sources which will be ideal for follow-up observations with other facilities., Comment: 12 pages, including 14 figures

We present an implementation of the iterative flux-conserving Lucy-Richardson (L-R) deconvolution method of image restoration for maps produced by the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST). We have analyzed its performance and convergence extensively through simulations and cross-correlations of the deconvolved images with available highresolution maps. We present new science results from two BLAST surveys, in the Galactic regions K3-50 and IC 5146, further demonstrating the benefits of performing this deconvolution. We have resolved three clumps within a radius of 4.'5 inside the star-forming molecular cloud containing K3-50. Combining the well-resolved dust emission map with available multi-wavelength data, we have constrained the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of five clumps to obtain masses (M), bolometric luminosities (L), and dust temperatures (T). The L-M diagram has been used as a diagnostic tool to estimate the evolutionary stages of the clumps. There are close relationships between dust continuum emission and both 21-cm radio continuum and 12CO molecular line emission. The restored extended large scale structures in the Northern Streamer of IC 5146 have a strong spatial correlation with both SCUBA and high resolution extinction images. A dust temperature of 12 K has been obtained for the central filament. We report physical properties of ten compact sources, including six associated protostars, by fitting SEDs to multi-wavelength data. All of these compact sources are still quite cold (typical temperature below ~ 16 K) and are above the critical Bonner-Ebert mass. They have associated low-power Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). We examine the relation between the density variance and the mean-square Mach number in supersonic, isothermal turbulence, assumed in several recent analytic models of the star formation process. From a series of calculations of supersonic, hydrodynamic turbulence driven using purely solenoidal Fourier modes, we find that the `standard' relationship between the variance in the log of density and the Mach number squared, i.e., sigma^2_(ln rho/rhobar)=ln (1+b^2 M^2), with b = 1/3 is a good fit to the numerical results in the supersonic regime up to at least Mach 20, similar to previous determinations at lower Mach numbers. While direct measurements of the variance in linear density are found to be severely underestimated by finite resolution effects, it is possible to infer the linear density variance via the assumption of log-normality in the Probability Distribution Function. The inferred relationship with Mach number, consistent with sigma_(rho/rhobar) ~ b M with b=1/3, is, however, significantly shallower than observational determinations of the relationship in the Taurus Molecular Cloud and IC5146 (both consistent with b~ 0.5), implying that additional physics such as gravity is important in these clouds and/or that turbulent driving in the ISM contains a significant compressive component. We have created synthetic neutral hydrogen (HI) Galactic Plane Survey data cubes covering 90 degrees < l < 180 degrees, using a model spiral galaxy from SPH simulations and the radiative transfer code TORUS. The density, temperature and other physical parameters are fed from the SPH simulation into TORUS, where the HI emissivity and opacity are calculated before the 21-cm line emission profile is determined. Our main focus is the observation of Outer Galaxy `Perseus Arm' HI, with a view to tracing atomic gas as it encounters shock motions as it enters a spiral arm interface, an early step in the formation of molecular clouds. The observation of HI self-absorption features at these shock sites (in both real observations and our synthetic data) allows us to investigate further the connection between cold atomic gas and the onset of molecular cloud formation., Comment: MNRAS accepted; 11 pages, 12 figures

Using the Torus radiative transfer code we produce synthetic observations of the 21 cm neutral hydrogen line from an SPH simulation of a spiral galaxy. The SPH representation of the galaxy is mapped onto an AMR grid, and a ray tracing method is used to calculate 21 cm line emission for lines of sight through the AMR grid in different velocity channels and spatial pixels. The result is a synthetic spectral cube which can be directly compared to real observations. We compare our synthetic spectral cubes to observations of M31 and M33 and find good agreement, whereby increasing velocity channels trace the main disc of the galaxy. The synthetic data also show kinks in the velocity across the spiral arms, evidence of non-circular velocities. These are still present even when we blur our data to a similar resolution as the observations, but largely absent in M31 and M33, indicating those galaxies do not contain significant spiral shocks. We introduce a method for calculating the probability density function (PDF) of a turbulent density field in three dimensions using only information contained in the projected two-dimensional column density field. We test the method by applying it to numerical simulations of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in molecular clouds. To a good approximation, the PDF of log(normalised column density) is a compressed, shifted version of the PDF of log(normalised density). The degree of compression can be determined observationally from the column density power spectrum, under the assumption of statistical isotropy of the turbulence., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present images and initial results from our extensive Spitzer Space Telescope imaging survey of the W5 H II region with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) and Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). We detect dense clusters of stars, centered on the O stars: HD 18326, BD +60 586, HD 17505 and HD 17520. At 24 microns substantial extended emission is visible, presumably from heated dust grains that survive in the strongly ionizing environment of the H {\sc ii} region. With photometry of more than 18000 point sources, we analyze the clustering properties of objects classified as young stars by their IR spectral energy distributions (a total of 2064 sources) across the region using a minimal-spanning-tree algorithm. We find ~40--70% of infrared excess sources belong to clusters with >10 members. We find that within the evacuated cavities of the H II regions that make up W5, the ratio of Class II to Class I sources is ~7 times higher than for objects coincident with molecular gas as traced by 12CO emission and near-IR extinction maps. We attribute this contrast to an age difference between the two locations, and postulate that at least two distinct generations of star formation are visible across W5. Our preliminary analysis shows that triggering is a plausible mechanism to explain the multiple generations of star formation in W5, and merits further investigation., Comment: 14 pages, 11 color figures. The mysterious very high energy gamma-ray source, TeV J2032+4130, is coincident with the powerful Cygnus OB2 stellar association, though a physical association between the two remains uncertain. It is possible that the detected very high energy photons are produced via an overdensity of locally accelerated cosmic rays impinging on molecular clouds in the source region. In order to test this hypothesis, we used the Kitt Peak 12m, the Heinrich-Hertz Submillimeter Telescope (HH-SMT), and the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO), to obtain observations in the J=1-->0 and J=2-->1 lines of both 12CO and 13CO. We report here on the detection of significant molecular material toward the TeV source region which could be acting as the target of locally accelerated CRs. We also find evidence of compact molecular clumps, showing large line widths in the CO spectra, possibly indicative of energetic processes in this region of Cygnus OB2., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

The FCRAO Survey of the Taurus Molecular Cloud observed the 12CO and 13CO J=1-0 emission from 98 square degrees of this important, nearby star forming region. This set of data with 45" resolution comprises the highest spatial dynamic range image of an individual molecular cloud constructed to date, and provides valuable insights to the molecular gas distribution, kinematics, and the star formation process. In this contribution, we describe the observations, calibration, data processing, and characteristics of the noise and line emission of the survey. The angular distribution of 12CO and 13CO emission over 1 km/s velocity intervals and the full velocity extent of the cloud are presented. Velocity anisotropy induced by MHD turbulence is investigated using computational simulations and molecular line observations of the Taurus molecular cloud. A new analysis method is presented to evaluate the degree and angle of velocity anisotropy using spectroscopic imaging data of interstellar clouds. The efficacy of this method is demonstrated on model observations derived from three dimensional velocity and density fields from the set of numerical MHD simulations that span a range of magnetic field strengths. The analysis is applied to 12CO J=1-0 imaging of a sub-field within the Taurus molecular cloud. Velocity anisotropy is identified that is aligned within 10 degrees of the mean local magnetic field direction derived from optical polarization measurements. Estimated values of the field strength based on velocity anisotropy are consistent with results from other methods. When combined with new column density measurements for Taurus, our magnetic field strength estimate indicates that the envelope of the cloud is magnetically subcritical. These observations favor strong MHD turbulence within the low density, sub-critical, molecular gas substrate of the Taurus cloud., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

HI 21cm-line self-absorption (HISA) reveals the shape and distribution of cold atomic clouds in the Galactic disk. Many of these clouds lack corresponding CO emission, despite being colder than purely atomic gas in equilibrium models. HISA requires background line emission at the same velocity, hence mechanisms that can produce such backgrounds. Weak, small-scale, and widespread absorption is likely to arise from turbulent eddies, while strong, large-scale absorption appears organized in cloud complexes along spiral arm shocks. We report the detection of molecular clouds around the X-ray bright interior feature in the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) CTB 109 (G109.1-1.0). This feature, called the Lobe, has been previously suggested to be the result of an interaction of the SNR shock wave with a molecular cloud complex. We present new high resolution X-ray data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and new high resolution CO data from the Five College Radio Observatory which show the interaction region with the cloud complex in greater detail. The CO data reveal three clouds around the Lobe in the velocity interval -57 < v < -52 km s^-1. The velocity profiles of 12CO at various parts of the east cloud are well fit with a Gaussian; however, at the position where the CO cloud and the Lobe overlap, the velocity profile has an additional component towards higher negative velocities. The molecular hydrogen density in this part of the cloud is relatively high (N_H2 = 1.9 x 10^20 cm^-2), whereas the foreground absorption in X-rays (N_H = 4.5 x 10^21 cm^-2), obtained from Chandra data, is lower than in other parts of the cloud and in the north and south cloud. These results indicate that this cloud has been hit by the SNR blast wave on the western side, forming the bright X-ray Lobe., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL. 3 figures

We describe algorithms that detect 21cm line HI self-absorption (HISA) in large data sets and extract it for analysis. Our search method identifies HISA as spatially and spectrally confined dark HI features that appear as negative residuals after removing larger-scale emission components with a modified CLEAN algorithm. Adjacent HISA volume-pixels (voxels) are grouped into features in (l,b,v) space, and the HI brightness of voxels outside the 3-D feature boundaries is smoothly interpolated to estimate the absorption amplitude and the unabsorbed HI emission brightness. The reliability and completeness of our HISA detection scheme have been tested extensively with model data. We detect most features over a wide range of sizes, linewidths, amplitudes, and background levels, with poor detection only where the absorption brightness temperature amplitude is weak, the absorption scale approaches that of the correlated noise, or the background level is too faint for HISA to be distinguished reliably from emission gaps. False detection rates are very low in all parts of the parameter space except at sizes and amplitudes approaching those of noise fluctuations. Absorption measurement biases introduced by the method are generally small and appear to arise from cases of incomplete HISA detection. We present a 21cm line HI self-absorption (HISA) survey of cold atomic gas within Galactic longitudes 75 to 146 degrees and latitudes -3 to +5 degrees. We identify HISA as spatially and spectrally confined dark HI features and extract it from the surrounding HI emission in the arcminute-resolution Canadian Galactic Plane Survey (CGPS). We compile a catalog of the most significant features in our survey and compare our detections against those in the literature. Within the parameters of our search, we find nearly all previously detected features and identify many new ones. The CGPS shows HISA in much greater detail than any prior survey and allows both new and previously-discovered features to be placed into the larger context of Galactic structure. In space and radial velocity, faint HISA is detected virtually everywhere that the HI emission background is sufficiently bright. This ambient HISA population may arise from small turbulent fluctuations of temperature and velocity in the neutral interstellar medium. By contrast, stronger HISA is organized into discrete complexes, many of which follow a longitude-velocity distribution that suggests they have been made visible by the velocity reversal of the Perseus arm's spiral density wave. The cold HI revealed in this way may have recently passed through the spiral shock and be on its way to forming molecules and, eventually, new stars. The universality of interstellar turbulence is examined from observed structure functions of 27 giant molecular clouds and Monte Carlo modeling. We show that the structure functions, dv=v0 l^gamma, derived from wide field imaging of CO J=1-0 emission from individual clouds are described by a narrow range in the scaling exponent, gamma, and the scaling coefficient, v0. The similarity of turbulent structure functions emphasizes the universality of turbulence in the molecular interstellar medium and accounts for the cloud-to-cloud size-line width relationship initially identified by Larson (1981). The degree of turbulence universality is quantified by Monte Carlo simulations that reproduce the mean squared velocity residuals of the observed cloud-to-cloud relationship. Upper limits to the variation of the scaling amplitudes and exponents for molecular clouds are ~10-20%. The measured invariance of turbulence for molecular clouds with vastly different sizes, environments, and star formation activity suggests a common formation mechanism such as converging turbulent flows within the diffuse ISM and a limited contribution of energy from sources within the cloud with respect to large scale driving mechanisms., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

The multivariate tool of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is applied to 23 fields in the FCRAO CO Survey of the Outer Galaxy. PCA enables the identification of line profile differences which are assumed to be generated from fluctuations within a turbulent velocity field. The variation of these velocity differences with spatial scale within a molecular region is described by a singular power law, delta v= c L^alpha which can be used as a powerful diagnostic to turbulent motions. For the ensemble of 23 fields, we find a mean value alpha = 0.62 +- 0.11. From a recent calibration of this method using fractal Brownian motion simulations (Brunt & Heyer 2001), the measured velocity difference-size relationship corresponds to an energy spectrum, E(k), which varies as k^-beta, where beta = 2.17 +- 0.31. We compare our results to both decaying and forced hydrodynamic simulations of turbulence. We conclude that energy must be continually injected into the regions to replenish that lost by dissipative processes such as shocks. The absence of large, widely distributed shocks within the targeted fields suggests that the energy is injected at spatial scales less than several pc., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures, accepted by ApJ
