International audience; Marolia alicantina sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Melandryidae) from eastern Spain is described and illustrated. All specimens were collected using window traps on Quercus rotundifolia Lamarck, 1785 (Fagaceae) in the Carrascar de la Font Roja Natural Park (Alicante, Spain). M. alicantina sp. nov. is the only European Marolia having erect setae on the elytra and pronotum. M. alicantina resembles M. grandis Peyerimhoff, 1971 from north Africa, from which it can distinguished by the denser punctuation of the pronotum, shape of the base of the pronotum and shape of the aedeagus. Furthermore, unpublished records for other Marolia species are presented in this paper; in particular M. purkynei Maran, 1933 is recorded for the first time in Croatia and Greece. The authors had the chance to study six specimens, subsequently labelled as syntypes, of the M. purkynei type series. The location of the remaining possible syntype remains unknown.

M. variegata is mentioned in the Catalogue of Palearctic Coleoptera (Nikitsky & Pollock 2008) as introduced to the United Kingdom. As there is no other published record of the species from the United Kingdom, and considering the known distribution and information from M.W.L. Barclay (London), the occurrence of M. variegata in United Kingdom is here considered doubtful. Sanchez et al. (2015) reported the first specimen-based record from Switzerland (Salvan, in 2014). Description of holotype. Body length 5.1 mm, width 1.7 mm. Body brown, elongate. Head broader than long (0.5 × 0.9 mm), dark brown-black, markedly darker than pronotum, around the base of antennae brighter; shiny, coarsely punctuated, with long yellowish setae. Clypeus and labrum brown with long yellowish setae. Mandibles brown-black; maxillary palpi consist of three brown segments with short brown, erect setae. Eyes distinct, exceeding the head margins, with sparse, short and lightly colored setae. There is a small de- pression between the eyes. Antennae 11-segmented, brown, 2.5 times longer than the pronotum length and with long yellowish setae. Last three antennal segments are slightly lighter than the others. All antennomeres longer than wide. Length ratio of antennomeres I–XI: 0.9: 0.6: 1.0: 1.0: 0.95: 0.9: 0.9: 0.85: 0.8: 0.8: 0.8. Pronotum is broader (1 mm) than long (1.25 mm) (ratio 0.8: 1.0), brown, shiny, coarsely and densely punctate, with long yellowish protruding setae of similar length as those on elytra. Posterior corners of the pronotum obtuse. Pronotum rounded on the sides, broadest part at 3/5 at its length. Base of the pronotum marginate, bulged at the middle and strongly extending beyond posterior corners of pronotum. The bulged part covers about half of the basis width. Transition between the narrow and bulged part is sudden. There are two marginal circular imprints near the pronotal base (close to the posterior corners). Elytra oval-shaped, 1.9 times longer (3.2 mm) than broad (1.7 mm) (ratio 1.9: 1.0), shiny, bearing long, dense, erect yellowish setae. The broadest part is at the middle of the elytral length Punctation dense and coarse. Elytra are dark brown with seven light patches. Large irregular patch is at 2/5 of elytral length in the direction from base. Small patch on the humeri, on apex of elytra and four small patches are situated at 3/5 of elytra, where they form irregular and interrupted strip. Elytral apex round. Ventral side brown, ventrites bearing long yellowish setae. Legs brown with erect yellowish setae with the exception of median and hind tibiae that bear shorter, darker setae (dark brown) than rest of legs. Setae on legs shorter than those on elytra. All tibiae possess two brown apical spurs. Aedeagus elongate, apex pointed, length: 1.25 mm. Median lobe extends to 4/5 of aedeagus in the direction from the apex to the base (Fig. 8). Fifth tergite rounded, obtuse apically; on apical third of the fifth tergite bearing setae. Variability. Body ♁♁ (n=16) length: 4.5–6.5 mm, width: 1.6–2.2 mm. ♀♀ (n=9): length: 4.9– 6.9 mm, width: 1.8– 2.5 mm. Body coloration is variable: clypeus and labrum varies from yellow to brown; setae vary from yellow to brownish yellow; the head is brownish-black to black. The color of the pronotum varies from brown to dark brown. The size and shape of light patches on elytra are extremely variable: occasionally the patches are missing and elytra are all seamlessly dark brown. The bulged middle part of the pronotal base is normally straight but in some cases it is slightly curved. Differential diagnosis. M. alicantina sp. nov. and M. grandis have long, erect setae on the elytra and pronotum while M. leseigneuri, M. purkynei and M. variegata possess recumbent setae. M. alicantina sp. nov. has denser punctation of the pronotum than M. grandis. The base of the pronotum of M. alicantina sp. nov. in the middle part is distinctly bulged and strongly extend beyond the posterior corners, and the transition to the middle bulged part is distinct and sudden, whereas in M. grandis it is nearly straight or only in the middle part slightly extending beyond the posterior corners of the pronotum. If the middle part is slightly bulged, transition to the bulged part is slight. The two species can be separated on the basis of the length of the aedeagal median lobe (Figs 8, 9). Differences between M. alicantina sp. nov. and M. grandis are summarized in Table 1. Etymology. This species is named after the province Alicante, where it was found. Bionomy. Unknown. It is plausible that this species possesses biology similar to the other species of the genus. Collecting circumstances. All specimens were caught by window traps placed on Quercus rotundifolia (Figs. 14, 15). Distribution. Le quart de la biodiversité forestière est « saproxylique » (associée au bois mort et aux micro-­habitats portés par les [vieux] arbres). Les insectes coléoptères, riches de 2663 espèces attachées à 74 familles en France, et qui dominent le cortège saproxylique avec les champignons, constituent­ ainsi un groupe indicateur fréquemment utilisé dans le monde forestier. Le suivi de cette riche biodiversité représente toutefois un véritable défi. En effet, trente ans après la prescription du Conseil de l’Europe, qui encourageait les gouvernements européens à utiliser prioritairement les organismes saproxyliques pour évaluer l’état de conservation des forêts, peu d’outils sont disponibles pour assurer cette mission. De 2008 à 2016, la base de données FRISBEE, soutenue par l’ONF, le MNHN, IRSTEA (ex Cemagref) et l’IGN (ex IFN), a compilé l’information disponible pour toutes les espèces de coléoptères saproxyliques français, stricts et facultatifs. Après la récente mise à jour du référentiel taxinomique, une vingtaine de champs parmi les mieux renseignés pour l’ensemble des espèces ont été sélectionnés dans plusieurs catégories : taxinomie, distribution géographique, éco-­morphologie adulte et surtout écologie larvaire. Le présent catalogue, issu de cette synthèse, est un outil écologique et taxinomique de référence sur l’écologie des espèces, voué à faciliter l’interprétation des listes d’inventaire et l’évaluation de l’état de conservation des forêts. En pointant les lacunes, il vise aussi à susciter de nouvelles contributions afin d’améliorer le niveau de connaissances. Après un chapitre introductif détaillé présentant les coléoptères saproxyliques et les variables descriptives retenues, l’ouvrage comporte des tableaux de synthèse agrémentés de pictogrammes pour décrire chaque espèce et 743 macrophotographies illustrant la majorité des genres français. Ce catalogue s’adresse aux entomologistes professionnels et amateurs des sociétés savantes, aux forestiers privés et publics en charge de la gestion patrimoniale des forêts, aux conservateurs de réserves, aux gestionnaires d’espaces naturels, aux bureaux d’études naturalistes et à tous les naturalistes curieux.

Intercepté en Europe (Allemagne) pour la première fois en 2007, Xylotrechus chinensis (Cerambycidae – Chevrolat, 1852) a depuis fait l’objet de découvertes de plusieurs foyers européens importants. Il a été signalé pour la première fois en Espagne (Catalogne) en 2013, où il est aujourd’hui considéré comme établi puis, en 2018 dans la région de Valence. En 2017, il a été découvert près du port d’Héraklion en Crète (Grèce) et une nouvelle interception a été effectuée en Allemagne dans un conteneur d’articles en bois de bouleau et de saule.

session 01 - Diversity and faunistics; World experts of different disciplines, from molecular biology to macroecology, recognize the value of cave ecosystems as ideal ecological and evolutionary laboratories. Among other subterranean taxa, spiders stand out as intriguing model organisms for their ecological role of top-predators, their unique adaptations to the hypogean medium and their sensitivity to anthropogenic disturbance. Here, we provide a general overview of the spider families recorded in hypogean habitats in Europe–20 families including nearly 500 species, most of them with restricted distributions. We also review the different adaptations of hypogean spiders to subterranean life and summarize the information gathered so far about their origin, population structure, ecology and conservation status. Taxonomic knowledge on subterranean spiders in Europe appears to be well, but not exhaustively documented. The origin of the European assemblages is mostly explained by past climate dynamics, although other factors are likely to be involved. Most of the macroecological issues related to spiders in European caves are based on qualitative assessments or have been quantified only at a sub-regional scale. In order to shed light on cave spiders’ biogeography and the macroecological patterns driving the diversity of European subterranean spiders we created the CAWEB network, a spontaneous collaboration between subterranean arachnologists from 30 different European countries. We here present the team and provide some preliminary results, which highlight Southern Europe as an important hot-spot for the European subterranean spider diversity.
