3. First tests of a 800 kJ HTS SMES

Abstract

SMES using high critical temperature superconductors are interesting for high power pulsed sources. Operation at temperatures above 20 K makes cryogenics easier, enhances stability and improves operation as pulsed power source. In the context of a DGA (Delegation Generate pour l'Armement) project, we have designed and constructed a 800 kJ SMES. The coil is wound with Nexans conductors made of Bi-2212 PIT tapes soldered in parallel. The coil consists in 26 superposed simple pancakes wound and bonded on sliced copper plates coated with epoxy. The rated current is 315 A for an energy of 814 kJ. The external diameter of the coil is 814 mm and its height 222 mm. The cooling at 20 K is only performed by conduction from cryocoolers to make cryogenics very friendly and invisible for the SMES users. The cooling down has been successfully carried out and the thermal system works as designed. After a brief description of the SMES design and construction, some tests will be presented. 4. AC Loss Investigation in MgB2 Multifilamentary Wires: A Numerical Study

Abstract

The discovery of superconductivity in magnesium diboride ($\text{Mg}\text{B}_{{\text{2}}}$) in 2001 generated significant interest due to its relatively high critical temperature and cost-effectiveness. While $\text{Mg}\text{B}_{{\text{2}}}$ has shown promise in direct current (DC) applications, its utilization in alternating current (AC) devices is hindered by dissipative phenomena. Consequently, research and development efforts have been devoted to understanding the factors influencing losses in $\text{Mg}\text{B}_{{\text{2}}}$ conductors and exploring novel designs aimed at reducing AC losses. This study presents an efficient computational tool based on a three-dimensional integral formulation of Maxwell's equations, enabling the calculation of losses in multi-filamentary $\text{Mg}\text{B}_{{\text{2}}}$ wires. By employing numerical simulations under various operating conditions and comparing the results with existing analytical formulæ, the study primarily focuses on simplified scenarios. Essential design criteria are identified, providing insights on how to effectively minimize coupling losses for specific operating conditions.

5. Recent Development and Status of Ex-Situ PIT MgB2 Wires at ASG Superconductors

Abstract

Nowadays, ex-situ Powder-In-Tube (PIT) MgB2 multifilamentary wires are commercially available in long length and can reach self-field critical current (Ic) values above 1000 A at 20 K; moreover, thanks to its high critical temperature Tc (38 K) such wires are good candidates for cryogen-free applications and devices required for the future. In the past, MRI system has already profited from these advantages and turned out to a series production of open MRI systems. Recently, this type of conductor has been chosen in the European project SCARLET for demonstrating the feasibility of a 500 MW DC monopolar cable system transferring 20 kA at 25 kV and, at the same time, distributes LH2. In addition, MgB2 is the most lightweight superconductor among the realm of practical superconductors, thus to be also suitable for aircraft components. In this work, the current state-of-the-art of the commercial ex-situ PIT MgB2 wires at ASG superconductors is reported and perspectives and challenges for their improvements over the next years is discussed.

9. Application of magnesium diboride in saturated core fault current limiters

Abstract

A fault current limiter (FCL) is a nonlinear device with negligible impedance under normal conditions, which is able to switch to a high impedance state as soon as the current passing through it exceeds a given threshold. Among the various FCL topologies, saturated core fault current limiters have recently reached the demonstration phase in medium- to high-voltage networks. ASG Power Systems has assembled and tested a 36 kV rated saturated core type fault current limiter which uses superconducting solenoids to provide the saturating flux. The evolution and functionality of this implementation will be described here in detail.

Abstract

High voltage direct current super-grids are one attractive solution for the transmission of bulk power of renewable electricity over long distances. Their protection is still an issue and superconducting fault current limiters (SCFCL) offer attractive perspectives. However, the actual superconducting tapes are not yet properly designed for operation at high voltages (>100 kV): The electric field developed during the current limitation is still too low (approximately 50 V/m for 50 ms) and the limiter requires too long lengths of tape. The European project FASTGRID aims at improving the properties of the REBCO tapes to enhance significantly (by 2-3 times) the electric field limit and so the economical SCFCL attractiveness. We use advanced THEVA tapes. Substantial improvements are also planned on the stabilizer (shunt) layer. Several shunt ways are under investigations. Other improvement on the tape properties will be carried out, namely the increase of the normal zone propagation velocity by at least one order of magnitude, with the help of the innovative current flow diverter architecture. The optimized conductor will be used in a SCFCL module (≈1.5 kA-50 kV) tested at 65 K. We will monitor the temperature along the conductor using an attached optical fibre. FASTGRID will also develop innovative tapes based on sapphire substrate, which can tolerate very high electric fields, in the range of kilovolts per meter. Validated on the laboratory scale, this game-changing technology needs to be implemented at long lengths with an industrial process. We will provide an overview of the project and its first results.

18. Cooling Considerations for the Long Length HVDC Cables Cryostat within BEST PATHS Project

Abstract

HVDC cables have been identified as the preferred solution for future pan-European grids for the transmission over long distances of the large power produced by renewable energy farms which are generally located far for the consumption places. The European project Best Paths has been launched to identify the remaining barriers and propose some innovative solutions to achieve such envisioned grids. As superconductivity offers very attractive and efficient solutions vision studies for long-distance superconducting power transmission lines are conducted. The superconducting technology under study is based on the MgB$_{2}$ conductor cooled with one-phase liquid hydrogen. A flexible cryostat with 15 to 25 K core cooling and with additional shield cooling using liquid nitrogen or hydrogen gas is required. For long length cables the limiting parameters are the cryostat heat load and the pressure drop. The calculation results show the interdependencies of the maximum length between neighboring cooling sections with the heat load on shield and core, mass flows and pressure drop, enthalpy change, viscosity, friction factors and cryostat geometry. The calculations are carried out for different fluid options and diameters, and the corresponding results are presented and discussed.

International audience; Les supraconducteurs sont capables de transporter des densités de courant bien supérieures aux conducteurs classiques et sont donc particulièrement adaptés pour des câbles fort courant compacts. Toutefois ils fonctionnent à de très basses températures ce qui nécessite le dimensionnement d'un système cryogénique. Pour estimer les pertes dans le câble, il convient d'étudier les différents mécanismes de pertes à l'intérieur du câble supraconducteur. Les pertes AC doivent être calculées avec précision. Le supraconducreur MgB2 qui est aujourd'hui un sérieux candidat pour ces applications est ainsi étudié. Un modèle numérique a été réalisé. Ce modèle 3-D prend en compte les propriétés non linéaires du supraconducteur ainsi que les propriétés magnétiques des matériaux présents. Les pertes AC dans le conducteur ont ensuite été calculées sous plusieurs logiciels basés sur différentes formulations pour valider les résultats obtenus

Abstract

Les pertes AC dans les câbles supraconducteurs générées par un environnement variable dans le temps impactent la cryogénie et donc la faisabilité industrielle des dispositifs supraconducteurs. Nexans est aujourd'hui sur le point de réaliser des fils cylindriques supraconducteurs pour des câbles de forte puissance. Aucune étude numérique n'a pour l'instant porté sur le calcul des pertes AC dans un ou plusieurs tubes. Cet article présente les étapes de création d'un modèle de calcul de pertes à l'aide d'un logiciel d'éléments finis pour une nouvelle géométrie :tube ou cylindre supraconducteur. La non-linéarité des formules E-J ainsi que les problèmes de convergence ont été traités par l'implémentation d'une formulation en H pour la résolution numérique. Les résultats ont été comparés aux formules analytiques. Dans le but de vérifier l'exactitude du modèle, une série de mesures expérimentales a aussi été réalisée sur un ruban supraconducteur industriel.

Abstract

We have studied the thermal treatments necessary to texture Cu-Ni alloys in view of applications as substrate for the YBCO coated conductors. Several alloy compositions chosen in order to avoid magnetism of the tapes have been elaborated by the rolling (RABiTS) method. Analyses of the texture as a function of annealing temperature have been done by X-ray and neutron diffractions, pole figures by EBSD and X-rays. The results show that the annealing temperature is dependant of the alloy composition and must be determined precisely for each composition. Good biaxial textures have been obtained on these cheap alloys.

Abstract: The LNCMI, the national French high magnetic field facility, provides high fields generated mainly by resistive magnets. Because of the forecast increasing price of electricity, LNCMI has a strong incentive to participate to the development and characterizations of HTS conductors in view of their use for the generation of strong field. Latest YBCO coated conductors have improved properties showing a great potential with that respect, without excluding Bi2212 and MgB2 for particular cases. We present the existing set-up to measure short straight or VAMAS type coil samples at variable temperature and high field up to 30 T, and some measurements obtained on different HTS conductors, Bi2212 round wires and YBCO coated conductors. We also report on the first results obtained at 18 T with a pancake coil made of commercial YBCO coated conductor tapes on a newly developed solenoid test bench. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

Key components for the power transmission and distribution for the future grids are superconducting cables. The energy network in highly populated areas will soon fully benefit from this technology, in particular for the retrofitting of the existing cables. However retrofitting the existing grid in underground structures (pipes, pits, turn), requires cables as small a diameter as possible. The HTS cable core is generally manufactured by laying tapes around a former with a diameter of about 25 mm to prevent any damage to the tape during the cabling and the handling operations. However in this configuration, the former cannot be used to transport the current. This triggered a new approach in cable design involving round 2G HTS wires with a diameter from 1 to 2 mm. They can be assembled to build a small cable core with a high ampacity. The benefits of this new wire design on power cables are discussed. The first results on different manufacturing processes and the characterizations of the 2G HTS wires are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The second generation (2G) HTS conductors, the YBaCuO Coated Conductors, show very exciting performances in terms of critical currents under very high fields whereas their mechanical properties, the key issues for very high field magnets, are outstanding for the IBAD (Ion Beam Assisted Deposition) route. Preliminary measurements have shown critical currents Ic above 500 A at 15 T and 4 K on commercial YBCO coated conductors. They are now available in reasonable length and manufacturing focus to provide reliable, consistent performance conductors. With these high critical current and tensile strength above 600 MPa, these conductors are very promising for making HTS superconducting coils able to generate very high field. But very few characterizations exist above 20 T. LNCMI is one of the few facilities in the world where such measurement can be performed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
