Context: The University of Wisconsin Running Injury and Recovery Index (UWRI) was developed to evaluate the key elements that runners use to self-assess their own running ability following common running-related injuries. The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the UWRI and to evaluate the psychometric properties of its Turkish version (UWRI-Tr) in runners. Design: Prospective cohort study. Methods: The study included 129 runners. The UWRI-Tr, the Lower Extremity Functional Scale, the Oswestry Disability Index, the Hip Outcome Score, the International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Evaluation Form, and the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure were applied for the validation purposes. Internal consistency, reliability, construct validity, and discriminant validity of the UWRI-Tr were tested. Results: The test–retest reliability of the UWRI-Tr was excellent with an intraclass correlation coefficient of .85 and a Cronbach α value of .84. There was a small to strong correlation among the UWRI-Tr and Lower Extremity Functional Scale (r = .278), Oswestry Disability Index (r = −.744), Hip Outcome Score (r = .684), The International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Evaluation Form (r = .758), and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (r = .498 and .767), indicating that its construct validity was appropriate for use with Turkish runners. Conclusions: The UWRI-Tr was shown to be a valid and reliable tool to use in clinical and research settings as a sport-specific measurement tool.

OBJECTIVE: Examine injury-related psychological distress and association with perceived running ability in injured runners. DESIGN: Prospective longitudinal study. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-three patients with a running-related injury. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Data collection at initial physical therapy visit and 12 to 16 weeks later included Optimal Screening for Prediction of Referral and Outcome - Yellow Flag (OSPRO-YF) and Athlete Fear Avoidance Questionnaire (AFAQ) for injury-related psychological distress, and University of Wisconsin Running and Recovery Index (UWRI) for perceived running ability. OSPRO-YF composite score, total yellow flags, and yellow flags in each domain (negative mood, fear-avoidance, positive affect/coping) were calculated. RESULTS: UWRI score and OSPRO-YF composite score and yellow flags significantly improved over time, while AFAQ score and yellow flags in OSPRO-YF negative mood domain did not. AFAQ scores were significantly correlated with UWRI score at baseline, follow-up and change over time, while OSPRO-YF composite score and yellow flags were not. Baseline OSPRO-YF composite score and AFAQ score were not correlated with follow-up UWRI score. CONCLUSIONS: Injury-related psychological distress is elevated when injured runners start rehabilitation, and generally improves; however, negative mood and athletic fear-avoidance may persist. Higher athletic fear-avoidance is associated with lower perceived running ability at the same time point or interval.

To cross-culturally adapt and evaluate the psychometric properties of the University of Wisconsin Running Injury and Recovery Index questionnaire in Spanish (UWRI-S) in Chilean runners with a running-related injury.Cross-cultural adaptation and validation study, following the Consensus-based Standards for selecting health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) recommendations.Outpatient sports medicine clinic and running clubs.UWRI was forward and backward translated, and culturally adapted. Thirty-one runners participated in the content validity of the UWRI-S; and fifty-seven in the assessment of psychometric properties.Runners seeking care from a physiotherapist completed the UWRI-S (baseline and after 48-72 h for reliability), Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS), Patient Specific Functional Scale (PSFS), Global Rating of Change scale (GROC), and Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS).Suggestions about accuracy of wording and understanding of items were incorporated. UWRI-S showed a positive moderate correlation with LEFS (r = 0.6; p 0.05), positive fair with GROC (r = 0.5, p 0.05), negative fair with NPRS (r = -0.4; p 0.05) and no correlation with PSFS (r = 0.3; p = 0.1). UWRI-S demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (α = 0.87) and test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.87).UWRI-S is a valid and reliable measure to evaluate running ability of Chilean runners during recovery from a running-related injury.

Despite its positive influence on physical and mental wellbeing, running is associated with a high incidence of musculoskeletal injury. Potential modifiable risk factors for running-related injury have been identified, including running biomechanics. Gait retraining is used to address these biomechanical risk factors in injured runners. While recent systematic reviews of biomechanical risk factors for running-related injury and gait retraining have been conducted, there is a lack of information surrounding the translation of gait retraining for injured runners into clinical settings. Gait retraining studies in patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome have shown a decrease in pain and increase in functionality through increasing cadence, decreasing hip adduction, transitioning to a non-rearfoot strike pattern, increasing forward trunk lean, or a combination of some of these techniques. This literature suggests that gait retraining could be applied to the treatment of other injuries in runners, although there is limited evidence to support this specific to other running-related injuries. Components of successful gait retraining to treat injured runners with running-related injuries are presented.

The specialty of sports physical therapy has grown substantially in size and scope over the past 50 years. Despite this growth, there is limited information on the educational opportunities and entry-level skills of clinicians in the management of sports-related injuries.To characterize the opinions of sports physical therapists on: 1) factors that distinguish the practice of sports physical therapy, 2) the need for sports physical therapy content to be included as part of entry-level physical therapy curriculums, and 3) the perceived levels of competence for the typical new entry-level graduate regarding skills and knowledge unique to sports physical therapy.Cross-sectional descriptive survey.A 54-item web-based questionnaire was distributed to student and professional members of the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy (AASPT).In total, 565 (7.4%) AASPT members responded to the survey. 60% of respondents did not have a specific sports physical therapy curricular course during their physical therapy education training. 95% felt the patient's rehabilitation goals or activity level aspirations were a primary factor that differentiated the practice of sports physical therapy from orthopedic physical therapy. 59% believed that sports physical therapy curricular education should be required content by CAPTE, and 37% believed that elements of sports physical therapy practice represent entry-level skill and knowledge. Most respondents indicated that entry-level graduates were novice in 11 of the 18 content areas identified as inherent to sports physical therapy.The survey findings suggest further work is needed to define the extent of sports physical therapy content included in professional education curricula in the United States and how to best integrate it with post-professional education. The findings provide information for educators to discuss regarding the necessity, structure, and implementation of education content needed to prepare new graduates.IV, cross-sectional descriptive survey design.

Plantar heel pain (PHP) is a common condition managed by physical therapists that can, at times, be difficult to treat. Management of PHP is complicated by a variety of pathoanatomic features associated with PHP in addition to several treatment approaches with varying efficacy. Although clinical guidelines and clinical trial data support a general approach to management, the current literature is limited in case-specific descriptions of PHP management that addresses unique combinations of pathoanatomical, physical, and psychosocial factors that are associated with PHP.

Background–The purpose of this investigation is to measure the normal neck and trunk motion of daily living and to compare this to annualized movements as defined by the ASTM F2423-11 and ISO 18192-1:2011 standards. Methods–Ten volunteers wore a custom sensor system that monitored their upper and lower spine motion. The system allows continuous measurement of the frequency and magnitude of spinal motion about all three axes. The angular motion can then be determined for the upper and lower spinal segments. The results were extrapolated to yield the yearly frequency and magnitudes of movements. The data were compared to ASTM and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards. Results–The median magnitude of neck motion was 14.3°, 13.8°, and 21.6°, and the mean annual frequency of cervical motion was 10.6 × 106, 8.5 × 106, and 5.6 × 106 movements in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation, respectively. The observed-to-standard (ASTM) ratio of annual cervical excursion was 1.22, 1.09, and 0.69, and for ISO the ratios were 1.22, 1.09, and 1.04 in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation, respectively. The median range of motion for the thorax relative to the iliac crest (lumbar) was 11.2°, 10.3°, and 12.5°, and the estimated number of annual movements was 6.8 × 106, 5.2 × 106, and 3.8 × 106 in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and rotation. The observed-to-standard ratios from ASTM were 0.63, 0.56 and 1.6, and for ISO they were 1.5, 1.68, and 1.59, in flexion-extension, lateral bending, and rotation respectively. Discussion–Neck and lumbar movements in healthy young adults aremore frequent that 1 × 106 times per annum. The amplitude is smaller than specified in current standards. Overall, the total annual angular excursions specified by ASTM correlated well with results, whereas the ISO specified smaller ranges of motion for the lumbar spine, and therefore the observed angular motions were greater than specified. New testing standards should consider using more physiologic movement patterns.
