We report electron fluence thresholds for the degradation of calcite nanoparticles under electron irradiation by both conventional and scanning TEM (CTEM and STEM), using time resolved phase contrast imaging and EDX spectroscopy at both 80 kV and 300 kV accelerating voltages. We show that the degradation pathway of calcite involves disruption of the crystal lattice with the evolution of pores and transformation to calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. Depending on irradiation conditions (CTEM or STEM), the calcium oxide formed can be either amorphous or crystalline, with the formation of the latter apparently being hindered by hydrocarbon contamination build up in STEM. For a given electron flux, irradiation at 300 kV prolongs the characteristic lifetime of the calcite lattice as compared to irradiation at 80 kV but with a corresponding reduction in both image contrast and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) signal, consistent with the change in inelastic mean free path for electron scattering. STEM offers significant benefits over CTEM, however only in the presence of hydrocarbon contamination, increasing the fluence threshold for the detection of irradiation induced faults in the calcite lattice from 2.7 × 107 e− nm-2 for 300 kV CTEM to over 1.8 × 108 e− nm-2 for 300 kV STEM. This work forms a framework for reliable identification of discrete particle crystallinity in nominally amorphous, nanoscale calcium carbonate particles which is of importance for fundamental studies of crystallisation and also for the process control during the synthesis of such surfactant stabilised nanoparticles for application as over-based fuel detergents.

We demonstrate a characterisation protocol for quantifying nanostructural features associated with heterogeneous graphene nanosheets, including the lateral dimension, thickness and defect density of flakes produced by liquid phase exfoliation methods. The underlying basis for the protocol is a cross correlation between high resolution electron probe-based techniques and lower resolution but higher throughput photon probe-based characterisation methods. Using statistical data analysis we are able to develop a practical characterisation protocol that provides access to the precision and accuracy of the various graphene characterisation techniques. We have shown that the lateral dimension and thickness of heterogeneous graphene flakes can be rapidly quantified via optical mapping techniques. The defect densities within graphene samples can be accessed via Raman micro-spectroscopy. Based on the high throughput photon probe-based characterisation method, statistically representative data for heterogeneous graphene nanosheets can be obtained. Such information can be used to differentiate between inhomogeneous graphene samples in large length scales and thus can be useful for optimising graphene synthesis processes.

The ability to synthesize plasmonic nanomaterials with well‐defined structures and tailorable size is crucial for exploring their potential applications. Gold nanoplates (AuNPLs) exhibit appealing structural and optical properties, yet their applications are limited by difficulties in thickness control. Other challenges include a narrow range of tunability in size and surface plasmon resonance, combined with a synthesis conventionally involving cytotoxic cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA) halide surfactant. Here, a one‐step, high‐yield synthesis of single‐crystalline AuNPLs is developed, based on the combined use of two structure‐directing agents, methyl orange and FeBr3, which undergo preferential adsorption onto different crystalline facets of gold. The obtained AuNPLs feature high shape homogeneity that enables mesoscopic self‐assembly, broad‐range tunability of dimensions (controlled thickness from ≈7 to ≈20 nm, accompanied by modulation of the edge length from ≈150 nm to ≈2 µm) and plasmonic properties. These merits, coupled with a preparation free of CTA‐halide surfactants, have facilitated the exploration of various uses, especially in bio‐related areas. For example, they are demonstrated as biocompatible photothermal agents for cell ablation in NIR I and NIR II windows. This work paves the way to the innovative fabrication of anisotropic plasmonic nanomaterials with desired attributes for wide‐ranging practical applications.

The unexpected high failure rates of CoCrMo hip implants are associated with the release of a large number of inflammatory wear particles. CoCrMo is nominally a stable material; however, previous chemical speciation studies on CoCrMo wear particles obtained from periprosthetic tissue revealed only trace amounts of Co remaining despite Co being the major component of the alloy. The unexpected high levels of Co dissolution in vivo raised significant clinical concerns particularly related to the Cr speciation in the dissolution process. At high electrochemical potentials, the alloy’s Cr-rich passive film breaks down (transpassive polarization), facilitating alloy dissolution. The potential release of the carcinogenic Cr(VI) species in vivo has been a subject of debate. While the large-scale Co dissolution observed on in vivo produced particles could indicate a highly oxidizing in vivo environment, Cr(VI) species were not previously detected in periprosthetic tissue samples (except in the specific case of post-mortem tissue of diabetic patients). However, Cr(VI) is likely to be an unstable (transient) species in biological environments, and studies on periprosthetic tissue do not provide information about intermediate reaction products or the exposure history of the wear particles. Here, an in situ spectromicroscopy approach was developed, utilizing the high chemical resolution of synchrotron radiation, to study CoCrMo reactivity as a function of time and oxidizing conditions. The results reveal limited Co dissolution from CoCrMo particles, which increases dramatically at a critical electrochemical potential. Furthermore, in situ XAS detected only Cr(III) dissolution, even at potentials where Cr(VI) is known to be produced, suggesting that Cr(VI) species are extremely transient in simulated biological environments where the oxidation zone is small.
