12. Novel Fast-Speed Partial-Shading-Tolerant Flexible Power Point Tracking for Photovoltaic Systems With Explicit Key Points Estimation

Abstract

Recent power curtailment-based photovoltaic (PV) flexible power point tracking (FPPT) algorithms mainly adopted intricate curve fitting or sophisticated curve-scanning mechanisms to ensure the grid supportive functionalities under partial shading conditions (PSCs), showing the limitations of mathematical solidity or system dynamics improvement. Accordingly, a novel fast-speed partial-shading-tolerant FPPT (PST-FPPT) algorithm is proposed in this article. Regarding the proposed scheme, a modified explicit PV model is developed to express the key operation points with the assistance of several representative current-voltage samples from the initialization process, which is beneficial to computational burden reduction and irradiance sensors removal. Additionally, to guarantee the tracking speed to system dynamics, a set point estimation-based direct voltage regulation strategy is proposed in this article, eliminating the redundant searching in approaching the predefined power command. Simulation and experimental evaluations under various PSCs and operational circumstances validated the effectiveness of the proposed control.

17. An Improved Photovoltaic Power Reserve Control With Rapid Real-Time Available Power Estimation and Drift Avoidance

Abstract

The main challenges in designing the power reserve control (PRC) lie in the rapid estimation of the maximum available power ($P_\mathrm{avi}$) in real time and effective drift avoidance under the condition of fast-changing irradiation. Conventional PRC strategies utilize direct measurement or curve-fitting-based estimation to determine the $P_\mathrm{avi}$, which shows obvious limitations, such as extra hardware, implementation complexity, and slow estimation speed. Meanwhile, the drifted reserved power ($\Delta P$) may deteriorate the dynamic response performance, bring high dc-link overvoltage risk, and affect the system operation stability due to the voltage-step-$\Delta P$ regulation mechanism in conventional PRC methods. To address these issues, an improved PRC strategy with a fast $\Delta P$ transient mechanism is proposed with the rapid estimation of $P_\mathrm{avi}$ through just one pair of photovoltaic (PV) voltage and current sampling. Thus, the proposed algorithm is cost-effective, easy to implement, and compatible with existing PV systems since no additional hardware components are required. Moreover, the proposed PRC breaks through the inherent limitation of the voltage-step-$\Delta P$ mechanism, which can ensure the $\Delta P$ drift mitigation even under fast-changing weather conditions. Main experimental comparisons with other advanced PRC strategies were conducted to verify the advantages of the proposed algorithm in terms of rapid real-time available power estimation and drift avoidance.

Abstract

Pulse test techniques are widely adopted in characterizing both the static and dynamic performances of semiconductor devices considering various device structures and operating conditions. For gallium nitride (GaN) devices, due to the current collapse phenomenon, fast and accurate measurement of their key electrical parameters, such as dynamic ON-state resistance ${R}_{\text {ds}, \mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON}}$ , switching rising time, fall time, switching losses, and short-circuit (SC) robustness, becomes essential. This article presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art pulse test setup methods such as the double-pulse test (DPT), multiple-pulse test (MPT), and SC test (SCT) for the first time, which facilitates the GaN device structure design and practical applications in high efficiency and power density power converters. Abstract

The dc power transmission system has been obviously attracting more research interests in recent years. In order to satisfy the high-reliability requirement of the dc power transmission system, the power converter should be able to keep uninterrupted operation after multiple unexpected faults. However, high fault-tolerant capability usually leads to the bulky redundant circuit, which increases the cost, volume, and complexity of the power converter. Thus, a fault-tolerant dual active bridge (DAB) converter is proposed to maintain the power transferring ability under multiple unexpected open-circuit faults (OCFs) conditions, which can significantly enhance the reliability of the dc power transmission system. By reconfiguring the central-tapped transformer and two symmetrical auxiliary inductors, the half-bridge conduction branch is built to maintain uninterrupted operation when a single or dual OCF has occurred. The proposed fault-tolerant strategy only requires four extra voltage sensors to detect and locate OCFs for the reconfiguration process. Thus, it significantly improves the system reliability with a low additional cost. Besides, the inductor current, transmission power, and the small-signal models of the proposed fault-tolerant converter have been presented. It proves the proposed fault-tolerant topology can smoothly switch between normal and postfault operation due to the constituency of the inductor current.
