Abstract

Forest@, the open access journal of the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology (SISEF), was launched in 2004. This note provides a short overview of the developments in scientific publishing over the past twenty years, with a focus on the consolidation of the open access model. We discuss the status of the two SISEF journals regarding the following aspects: the international journal, iForest-Biogeosciences and Forestry, has a broad readership and attracts interest in developing countries; the Italian-language journal, Forest@, has seen a decrease in the number of manuscripts submitted each year.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and tolerability of verinurad in healthy adult males.Subjects and methods: This was a Phase I, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single and multiple ascending dose study. Panels of eight male subjects received a single oral dose of verinurad or placebo in either a fasted or fed state; panels of 10–12 male subjects received ascending doses of once-daily verinurad or placebo in a fasted state for 10 days. Serial blood and urine samples were assayed for verinurad and uric acid. Safety was assessed by adverse event (AE) reports, laboratory tests, vital signs, and electrocardiograms (ECGs).Results: A total of 81 adult males completed the study. Following single doses of verinurad, maximum observed plasma concentration (Cmax) and area under the plasma concentration–time curve (AUC) increased in a dose-proportional manner; Cmax occurred at 0.5–0.75 hours and 1.25 hours in the fasted and fed states, respectively. Food decreased AUC by 23% and Cmax by 37%-53%. There was a modest accumulation of verinurad following multiple daily doses. Verinurad reduced serum urate levels by up to 62% (40 mg, single dose) and 61% (10 mg, multiple dose). The increase in urinary excretion of uric acid was greatest in the first 6 hours after dosing and was still evident ≥24 hours for verinurad doses ≥2 mg. Verinurad was well tolerated at all doses. No serious AEs, severe AEs, discontinuations due to AEs, or clinically significant laboratory or ECG abnormalities were reported.Conclusion: Single and multiple doses of verinurad were well tolerated, absorption was rapid, and exposure was dose proportional. Verinurad increased urinary uric acid elimination and resulted in sustained reductions in serum urate. These data support further clinical evaluation of once-daily verinurad as a treatment for gout. Abstract

The measurement of conducted emissions in the 2 kHz to 150 kHz frequency range, also referred to as High Frequency (HF) Emissions (HFEs) or Supraharmonics, is gaining more and more importance. This is due to highly increasing switching frequency of power converters. In low voltage power systems, Light Emitting Diode (LED) lamps are a widespread diffused loads with switching frequency up to some tens of kilohertz. HFEs from LED lamps are in the same frequency range of Power Line Communications (PLCs), widely used for vital grid operations as protection or meter reading. This paper presents the results of a preliminary experimental study focused on the evaluation of the effects of HFEs from LED lamps on the reliability of PLCs.

Abstract

Background: The deeper knowledge of non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) biology and the discovery of driver molecular alterations have opened the era of precision medicine in lung oncology, thus significantly revolutionizing the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to NSCLC. In Italy, however, molecular assessment remains heterogeneous across the country, and numbers of patients accessing personalized treatments remain relatively low. Nationwide programs have demonstrated that the creation of consortia represent a successful strategy to increase the number of patients with a molecular classification. Patients and Methods: The Alliance Against Cancer (ACC), a network of 25 Italian Research Institutes, has developed a targeted sequencing panel for the detection of genomic alterations in 182 genes in patients with a diagnosis of NSCLC (ACC lung panel). One thousand metastatic NSCLC patients will be enrolled onto a prospective trial designed to measure the sensitivity and specificity of the ACC lung panel as a tool for molecular screening compared to standard methods. Results and Conclusion: The ongoing trial is part of a nationwide strategy of ACC to develop infrastructures and improve competences to make the Italian research institutes independent for genomic profiling of cancer patients.

Abstract

The adoption of digital technology was studied in terms of factors influencing the firm, either externally, such as competitive pressure and network influence, or internally, such as technological competences and human capital. A similar approach was applied to small and medium-sized enterprises in the agri-food sector, and among the factors considered to influence the firm in the adoption process, there was evidence of top management’s support. Extant literature investigating top managers’ intention to adopt digital technologies has been focusing on variables such as education, age, gender, etc. The strong belief of the High Technology Integration (HTI) firms’ managers in technology as a mean to innovate and improve their business is the first feature that could explain the difference between the HTI and Low Technology Integration enterprises. The managers of HTI enterprises usually vaunt higher exposure to important information about digital technology.

Abstract

The topic of non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) has seen a significant increase in research interest over the past decade, which has led to a significant increase in the performance of these systems. Nowadays, NILM systems are used in numerous applications, in particular by energy companies that provide users with an advanced management service of different consumption. These systems are mainly based on artificial intelligence algorithms that allow the disaggregation of energy by processing the absorbed power signal over more or less long time intervals (generally from fractions of an hour up to 24 h). Less attention was paid to the search for solutions that allow non-intrusive monitoring of the load in (almost) real time, that is, systems that make it possible to determine the variations in loads in extremely short times (seconds or fractions of a second). This paper proposes possible approaches for non-intrusive load monitoring systems operating in real time, analysing them from the point of view of measurement. The measurement and post-processing techniques used are illustrated and the results discussed. In addition, the work discusses the use of the results obtained to train machine learning algorithms that allow you to convert the measurement results into useful information for the user.

Abstract

Over the past decade, the demand for palm oil has been increasing worldwide. The multi-purpose use combined with a market price below makes palm oil an attractive product. Consequently, a significant change in palm oil industry has taken place. Since 2006, Indonesia has been the biggest producer of palm oil in the world, replacing Malaysia as a chief producer. Thus, the rise of Indonesia palm oil is only a relatively recent phenomenon. This study develops a simple theoretical model that integrates some of the factor that could influence the production of palm oil in Indonesia in order to establish the issue of cointegration and causality patterns. In particular, this analysis examined the relationships among Indonesian palm oil production, soybean oil price, area harvested for palm oil production in Malaysia and palm oil consumption. The finding shows that soybean oil price, area harvested for palm oil production in Malaysia and palm oil consumption positively and significantly affect Indonesian palm oil production. However, the ascent of the Indonesian palm oil industry is the result of a combination of several factors, some of which are relating to the palm oil plant itself, others to policy. 43. An Experimental Simulation of Flap Flow on Multielement Airfoils at High Reynolds Number

Abstract

The design of the high lift system has a major impact on the performance of an aircraft yet our understanding of the physics of this flow is still weak. Flow features include interactions between the wakes shed from the upstream elements and the pressure gradients and boundary layers of the downstream elements. Interaction of the turbulent wake of the main element and the flap can cause (1) separation of the flap boundary layer or (2) 'bursting' of the main airfoil wake. Although the first factor is at least partially understood, even the qualitative aspects of (2) remain to be determined. In order to study these phenomena at Reynolds numbers approaching those of flight, a thick high Reynolds number wake is created using a 24 foot flat plate in the long rectangular test section of a 4 ft. by 6 ft subsonic wind tunnel. The design and construction of this test section, plate, and accompanying flap is described. Results obtained in a quarter-scale model were used for design purposes and are also described. Construction of the full scale facility is complete and preliminary results are presented.
