This study brings together insights from translation studies, linguistics, church history and biblical studies in a comparative analysis of keywords from the New Testament book of Galatians. The overarching question of this work is: how do concepts travel? The main theoretical catalyst for this research is Raymond Williams' "Keywords: a vocabulary of culture and society" (1976), in which Williams recognises the importance of certain words in key debates and subtle connections between words that may exhibit ideological positions and worldviews. The subsequent research questions are: how are keywords translated to reveal ideological positions? And, how might the mapping and remapping of keywords from Galatians serve to reflect and indeed effect religious identities and inter-confessional relations today? Nine keywords are explored in terms of their mappings and remappings in both pivotal moments in Church history (such as the Reformation and the emergence of Liberation Theology and Pentecostal ism) and in the practice of contemporary Bible translation. The corpus comprises sixteen Bible translations written for a variety of purposes across French, German, Spanish and English.

Paranoia is a common experience in the non-clinical population (e.g. Freeman et al., 2011) and is significantly associated with distress (e.g. Ellett et al., 2003). A number of experimental approaches have investigated the induction of state paranoia under controlled conditions (e.g. Bodner & Mikulincer, 1998; Ellett & Chadwick, 2007). There has been no investigation into ways of reducing state paranoia once induced, but mindfulness is one possibility. A number of studies have investigated the use of brief mindful self-focus (BMSF) in reducing negative affect following, or preceded by, negative mood induction (e.g. Broderick, 2005; Singer & Dobson, 2007). However, there has been no such experimental exploration of BMSF following paranoia induction. In the present study, a sample of university students first underwent a paranoia induction paradigm (Ellett & Chadwick, 2007) intended to increase state paranoia. Participants were then randomly allocated to one of two conditions: BMSF or Distraction. Both conditions required participants to listen to a brief audio recording. Participants completed trait measures, as well as a set of state measures across three time points (baseline, post paranoia induction, post BMSF/Distraction) to detect change. Findings indicated that participants became significantly more paranoid following the paranoia induction paradigm and that state paranoia was significantly associated with trait paranoia. There was a significant reduction in state paranoia and negative affect following both the BMSF and distraction conditions. State mindfulness did not significantly increase in the BMSF condition, although there was a trend with participants in the BMSF condition demonstrating a higher level of decentring than the distraction condition. BMSF might therefore be a suitable technique for reducing state paranoia in the non-clinical population. Future research could explore other possible mechanisms of change by which mindfulness may reduce state paranoia, and apply BM SF within other populations experiencing paranoia.

The central Indian Ocean exhibits a higher level of earthquake activity than is normally associated with a region distant from conventional plate boundaries. This anomalous seismicity has been the subject of previous studies which assigned large focal depths (as deep as 40km below the seafloor), despite crustal faulting and folding observed on seismic reflection profiles. I re-examine the distribution and source parameters of teleseismically recorded earthquakes and relate them to the tectonic setting of the Central Indian Ocean Basin. Previous studies have used long-period waveform modelling, which gives unreliable focal mechanisms for small earthquakes (m_b <5.5), and poor resolution of depth for shallow earthquakes (<100km). Zero-phase broad-band conversions from short period and broadband waveforms are used with a detailed velocity structure derived from seismic reflection data obtained by the Marion Dufresne in the Central Indian Basin, to assign the more accurate focal depths (±3km). Measurements of the relative amplitudes of P arrivals, and surface reflections from the seafloor and sea surface, are used to constrain fault plane solutions even when P-wave first motion polarities cannot be determined. Unlike in other oceanic intraplate settings, the seafloor reflection is small and unclear, due to high sediment deposition in the Bengal Fan. The earthquakes have either thrust or strike-slip mechanisms and their depths are in agreement with previous studies, with no depths shallower than 22km below the seafloor in the Central Indian Ocean Basin or Wharton Basin. Earthquakes in the Bay of Bengal are shallower, possibly due to loading by Fan sediments raising lithospheric stresses beyond failure. The directions of the compressional axes of the earthquakes are in agreement with those predicted by plate models. The seismicity shows a concentration between the Afanasy Nikitin Seamount and the Ninety East Ridge. Other earthquakes are evenly distributed between 10°N and 10°S, and 80°E and 95°E. The existence of an aseismic region west of 80°E suggests that there are low strain rates in the west Central Indian Ocean Basin, associated with the proximity of the proposed Euler pole of rotation between separate Indian and Australian plates.
