Abstract

The CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) is a space experiment, currently under development by Japan in collaboration with Italy and the United States, which will measure the flux of cosmic-ray electrons (and positrons) up to 20 TeV energy, of gamma rays up to 10 TeV, of nuclei with Z from 1 to 40 up to 1 PeV energy, and will detect gamma-ray bursts in the 7 keV to 20 MeV energy range during a 5 year mission. These measurements are essential to investigate possible nearby astrophysical sources of high energy electrons, study the details of galactic particle propagation and search for dark matter signatures. The main detector of CALET, the Calorimeter, consists of a module to identify the particle charge, followed by a thin imaging calorimeter (3 radiation lengths) with tungsten plates interleaving scintillating fibre planes, and a thick energy measuring calorimeter (27 radiation lengths) composed of lead tungstate logs. The Calorimeter has the depth, imaging capabilities and energy resolution necessary for excellent separation between hadrons, electrons and gamma rays. The instrument is currently being prepared for launch (expected in 2015) to the International Space Station ISS, for installation on the Japanese Experiment Module - Exposure Facility (JEM-EF).

Abstract

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a next-generation dark matter direct detection experiment that will operate 4850 feet underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, USA. Using a two-phase xenon detector with an active mass of 7 tonnes, LZ will search primarily for low-energy interactions with weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are hypothesized to make up the dark matter in our galactic halo. In this paper, the projected WIMP sensitivity of LZ is presented based on the latest background estimates and simulations of the detector. For a 1000 live day run using a 5.6-tonne fiducial mass, LZ is projected to exclude at 90% confidence level spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross sections above 1.4 × 10-48cm2 for a 40 GeV/c2 mass WIMP. \ud Additionally, a 5σ discovery potential is projected, reaching cross sections below the exclusion limits of recent experiments. For spin-dependent WIMP-neutron(-proton) scattering, a sensitivity of 2.3 × 10−43 cm2 (7.1 × 10−42 cm2) for a 40 GeV/c2\ud mass WIMP is expected. With underground installation well underway, LZ is on track for commissioning at SURF in 2020.

Abstract

The study describes, that a reasonably high quantum efficiency can be obtained from thin GGaN/lnGaN photocathode layers grown on sapphire substrates designed for transmission-mode detector devices. Photocathodes grown on other substrates such as single-crystal wafers should result in an improvement by lowering the epitaxial layer defect density, since AIN provides a better lattice match to the GaN/GalnN layers.

Abstract

The Scintillating Fiber Telescope for Energetic Radiation (SIFTER) is a large-area instrument concept for high-energy (E [is greater than] 10 MeV) gamma-ray astronomy. It takes advantage of the technology of fine (~1 [mm.sup.2]) plastic scintillating fibers in the context of a pair tracker/calorimeter telescope. In our on-going SIFTER research, we have developed a small test apparatus, consisting of 12 fiber planes, each with a potential active area of 10 cm x 10 cm covered with a thin tantalum foil converter. This apparatus was tested in July, 1998 with high-energy photons (~0.5-1.6 GeV) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Laboratory Hall B tagged gamma-ray facility. We report on results of the beam test, concentrating on comparisons with detailed Monte Carlo simulations of the instrument performance, including track reconstruction, angular resolution and detection efficiency.

Abstract

Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has had a major breakthrough with the impressive results obtained using systems of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy has a huge potential in astrophysics, particle physics and cosmology. CTA is an international initiative to build the next generation instrument, with a factor of 5-10 improvement in sensitivity in the 100 GeV-10 TeV range and the extension to energies well below 100 GeV and above 100 TeV. CTA will consist of two arrays (one in the north, one in the south) for full sky coverage and will be operated as open observatory. The design of CTA is based on currently available technology. This document reports on the status and presents the major design concepts of CTA. © 2011 The Author(s).

Abstract

Previous studies have concluded that the flux from TeV energy sources, together with the timescales on which they vary, limits the emission mechanisms of their sources. This means that the emission region of TeV energy may grow at a steady rate. However, two observations of TeV photons from the active galaxy Markarian 421 challenge such an assertion. During the first burst, which had a doubling time of about one hour, the flux increased above the relatively quiescent value by more than a factor of 50. During the second burst, which lasted about 30 minutes, the flux increased by a factor of 20-25.

The detection of gamma rays of energy greater than 300 GeV from the BL Lacertae object Mrk 501 demonstrates that extragalactic TeV emission is not unique to Mrk 421. During 66 hr of observations between 1995 March and July we measured an average flux of 8.1 ± 1.4 × 10-12 cm-2 s-1 above 300 GeV, a flux that is only 20% of the average Mrk 421 flux. The new gamma-ray source has not been reported by the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory as an emitter of gamma rays at lower energies. There is evidence for variability on timescales of days.

Abstract

We present the results of a search for pulsed TeV emission from the Crab pulsar using the Whipple Observatory's 10-m gamma-ray telescope. The direction of the Crab pulsar was observed for a total of 73.4 hr between 1994 November and 1997 March. During this period the Whipple 10 m telescope was operated at its lowest energy threshold to date. Spectral analysis techniques were applied to search for the presence of a gamma-ray signal from the Crab pulsar over the energy band 250 GeV to 4 TeV. We do not see any evidence of the 33 ms pulsations present in other energy bands from the Crab pulsar. The 99.9% confidence level upper limit for pulsed emission above 250 GeV is derived to be 4.8 × 10-12 cm-2 s-1 or less than 3% of the steady flux from the Crab Nebula. These results imply a sharp cutoff of the power-law spectrum seen by the EGRET instrument on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. If the cutoff is exponential, it must begin at 60 GeV or lower to accommodate these upper limits.

Abstract

The energy spectrum of Markarian 421 in flaring states has been measured from 0.3 to 10 TeV using both small and large zenith angle observations with the Whipple Observatory 10 m imaging telescope. The large zenith angle technique is useful for extending spectra to high energies, and the extraction of spectra with this technique is discussed. The resulting spectrum of Markarian 421 is fitted reasonably well by a simple power law: J(E)=E−2.54 ± 0.03 ± 0.10 photons m-1 s-1 TeV-1, where the first set of errors is statistical and the second set is systematic. This is in contrast to our recently reported spectrum of Markarian 501, which over a similar energy range has substantial curvature. The differences in TeV energy spectra of gamma-ray blazars reflect both the physics of the gamma-ray production mechanism and possibly differential absorption effects at the source or in the intergalactic medium. Since Markarian 421 and Markarian 501 have almost the same redshift (0.031 and 0.033, respectively), the difference in their energy spectra must be intrinsic to the sources and not due to intergalactic absorption, assuming the intergalactic infrared background is uniform.

Abstract

ABSTRACT MRI provides a non-invasive method of imaging the cervical spine in multiple planes. The excellent tissue contrast and sensitivity in the detection of desease which it provides make MRI a powerful diagnostic tool in the assessment of both anatomical deformity and tissue pathology. MRI undoubtedly has enormous potential in the diagnosis of both intraspinal and osteo-articular disease of the cervical spine. Nevertheless there are still disadvantages of this technique. Radiologists should be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of MRI relative to other imaging modalities in order to ensure that this important but expensive technique is used to best effect. Abstract

Journal of astronomical telescopes, instruments, and systems 8(01), 014007-1 (2022). doi:10.1117/1.JATIS.8.1.014007, The prototype Schwarzschild-Couder Telescope (pSCT) is a candidate for a medium-sized telescope in the Cherenkov Telescope Array. The pSCT is based on a novel dual mirror optics design which reduces the plate scale and allows for the use of silicon photomultipliers as photodetectors. The prototype pSCT camera currently has only the central sector instrumented with 25 camera modules (1600 pixels), providing a 2.68$^{\circ}$ field of view (FoV). The camera electronics are based on custom TARGET (TeV array readout with GSa/s sampling and event trigger) application specific integrated circuits. Field programmable gate arrays sample incoming signals at a gigasample per second. A single backplane provides camera-wide triggers. An upgrade of the pSCT camera is in progress, which will fully populate the focal plane. This will increase the number of pixels to 11,328, the number of backplanes to 9, and the FoV to 8.04$^{\circ}$.
