Abstract: A dedicated search for upward-going air showers at zenith angles exceeding $110^\circ$ and energies $E>0.1$ EeV has been performed using the Fluorescence Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The search is motivated by two "anomalous" radio pulses observed by the ANITA flights I and III which appear inconsistent with the Standard Model of particle physics. Using simulations of both regular cosmic ray showers and upward-going events, a selection procedure has been defined to separate potential upward-going candidate events and the corresponding exposure has been calculated in the energy range [0.1-33] EeV. One event has been found in the search period between 1 Jan 2004 and 31 Dec 2018, consistent with an expected background of $0.27 \pm 0.12$ events from mis-reconstructed cosmic ray showers. This translates to an upper bound on the integral flux of $(7.2 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-21}$ cm$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ y$^{-1}$ and $(3.6 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{-20}$ cm$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ y$^{-1}$ for an $E^{-1}$ and $E^{-2}$ spectrum, respectively. An upward-going flux of showers normalized to the ANITA observations is shown to predict over 34 events for an $E^{-3}$ spectrum and over 8.1 events for a conservative $E^{-5}$ spectrum, in strong disagreement with the interpretation of the anomalous events as upward-going showers., Comment: 10+5 Pages of Manuscript plus Supplemental Material, 3+8 figures, Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Abstract: Thermal light dark matter (LDM) with particle masses in the 1 MeV - 1 GeV range could successfully explain the observed dark matter abundance as a relic from the primordial Universe. In this picture, a new feeble interaction acts as a "portal" between the Standard Model and LDM particles, allowing for the exploration of this paradigm at accelerator experiments. In the last years, the "missing energy" experiment NA64e at CERN SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) has set world-leading constraints in the vector-mediated LDM parameter space, by exploiting a 100 GeV electron beam impinging on an electromagnetic calorimeter, acting as an active target. In this paper, we report a detailed description of the analysis of a preliminary measurement with a 70 GeV positron beam at NA64e, performed during summer 2023 with an accumulated statistic of 1.6 x 10^10 positrons on target. This data set was analyzed with the primary aim of evaluating the performance of the NA64e detector with a lower energy positron beam, towards the realization of the post-LS3 program. The analysis results, other than additionally probing unexplored regions in the LDM parameter space, provide valuable information towards the future NA64e positron campaign.

Abstract: Diffuse photons of energy above 0.1 PeV, produced through the interactions between cosmic rays and either interstellar matter or background radiation fields, are powerful tracers of the distribution of cosmic rays in the Galaxy. Furthermore, the measurement of a diffuse photon flux would be an important probe to test models of super-heavy dark matter decaying into gamma-rays. In this work, we search for a diffuse photon flux in the energy range between 50 PeV and 200 PeV using data from the Pierre Auger Observatory. For the first time, we combine the air-shower measurements from a 2 km$^2$ surface array consisting of 19 water-Cherenkov surface detectors, spaced at 433 m, with the muon measurements from an array of buried scintillators placed in the same area. Using 15 months of data, collected while the array was still under construction, we derive upper limits to the integral photon flux ranging from 13.3 to 13.8 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above tens of PeV. We extend the Pierre Auger Observatory photon search program towards lower energies, covering more than three decades of cosmic-ray energy. This work lays the foundation for future diffuse photon searches: with the data from the next 10 years of operation of the Observatory, this limit is expected to improve by a factor of $\sim$20., Comment: Submitted to JCAP

4. Proteus: Achieving High-Performance Processing-Using-DRAM via Dynamic Precision Bit-Serial Arithmetic

Abstract: Processing-using-DRAM (PUD) is a paradigm where the analog operational properties of DRAM structures are used to perform bulk logic operations. While PUD promises high throughput at low energy and area cost, we uncover three limitations of existing PUD approaches that lead to significant inefficiencies: (i) static data representation, i.e., 2's complement with fixed bit-precision, leading to unnecessary computation over useless (i.e., inconsequential) data; (ii) support for only throughput-oriented execution, where the high latency of individual PUD operations can only be hidden in the presence of bulk data-level parallelism; and (iii) high latency for high-precision (e.g., 32-bit) operations. To address these issues, we propose Proteus, which builds on two key ideas. First, Proteus parallelizes the execution of independent primitives in a PUD operation by leveraging DRAM's internal parallelism. Second, Proteus reduces the bit-precision for PUD operations by leveraging narrow values (i.e., values with many leading zeros). We compare Proteus to different state-of-the-art computing platforms (CPU, GPU, and the SIMDRAM PUD architecture) for twelve real-world applications. Using a single DRAM bank, Proteus provides (i) 17x, 7.3x, and 10.2x the performance per mm2; and (ii) 90.3x, 21x, and 8.1x lower energy consumption than that of the CPU, GPU, and SIMDRAM, respectively, on average across twelve real-world applications. Proteus incurs low area cost on top of a DRAM chip (1.6%) and CPU die (0.03%).

5. Valuing science and the teaching of Physics through theatrical communication

Abstract: Scientific communication inside and outside the classroom is the main means for providing an adequate understanding of how science and technological innovation relate to society. In order to achieve this goal, it is important to explore new didactic instruments for teaching science in general. The intersection between science and arts has contributed to make science accessible, relevant and interesting to diverse audiences with the potential to provide scientific content, significant artistic and entertainment values. Here, we use theatrical communication to value science and the teaching of Physics through an original script of a play in which concepts and phenomena related to astronomy are addressed. Using an artistic and casual language, we adapt the proposed scientific concepts to the contextual and instrumental nature of theater to demonstrate its educational value and its potential to transform science into entertainment. Our proposal allowed students being engaged in a highly motivating and collaborative environment, providing them the opportunity to recognize, analyze and imagine explanations and performances to communicate science to the general public in a creative and alternative way., Comment: 49 pages, in Portuguese language, 4 figures

Abstract: The half-life of $^{39}$Ar is measured using the DEAP-3600 detector located 2 km underground at SNOLAB. In 2016-2020, DEAP-3600 used a target mass of (3269 $\pm$ 24) kg of liquid argon distilled from the atmosphere in a direct-detection dark matter search. Such an argon mass also enables direct measurements of argon isotope properties. The decay of $^{39}$Ar in DEAP-3600 is the dominant source of triggers by two orders of magnitude, ensuring high statistics and making DEAP-3600 well-suited for measuring this isotope's half-life. Use of the pulse-shape discrimination technique in DEAP-3600 allows for powerful discrimination between nuclear recoils and electron recoils, resulting in the selection of a clean sample of $^{39}$Ar decays. Observing over a period of 3.4 years, the $^{39}$Ar half-life is measured to be $(302 \pm 8_{\rm stat} \pm 6_{\rm sys})$ years. 7. Spatially Multiplexed Interferometric Microscopy with one-dimensional diffraction grating

Abstract: Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) applied to quantitative phase imaging (QPI) has been successfully demonstrated as a powerful label-free method to analyse the optical properties of cells. Spatially multiplexed interferometric microscopy (SMIM) is a DHM technique that implements a common-path interferometric layout in the embodiment of a standard microscope to achieve QPI. More concretely, SMIM introduces three minimal modifications: 1) replaces the broadband illumination of the microscope by a coherent or partially coherent light source, 2) divides the input plane into two or three regions for transmission in parallel of both imaging and reference beams, and 3) includes a one-dimensional diffraction grating or a beam splitter cube for holographic recording. Hence, SMIM is a cost-effective, extremely simple, and highly stable manner of converting a standard bright field microscope into a holographic one. The goal of this contribution is to provide a review of the SMIM approaches implemented using a one-dimensional (1D) diffraction grating, and highlight vast range of capabilities including super-resolved, reflective, transflective, noise-reduced and single-shot slightly off-axis amplitude and phase imaging.

8. Cepstrum-based interferometric microscopy (CIM) for quantitative phase imaging

Abstract: A universal methodology for coding-decoding the complex amplitude field of an imaged sample in coherent microscopy is presented, where no restrictions on any of the two interferometric beams are required. Thus, the imaging beam can be overlapped with, in general, any other complex amplitude distribution and, in particular, with a coherent and shifted version of itself considering two orthogonal directions. The complex field values are retrieved by a novel Cepstrum-based algorithm, named as Spatial-Shifting Cepstrum (SSC), based on a weighted subtraction of the Cepstrum transform in the cross-correlation term of the object field spectrum in addition with the generation of a complex pupil from the combination of the information retrieved from different holographic recordings (one in horizontal and one in vertical direction) where one of the interferometric beams is shifted 1 pixel. As a result, the field of view is tripled since the complex amplitudes of the three interferometric fields involved in the process are retrieved. Proof-of-concept validation of this methodology, named as Cepstrum-based Interferometric Microscopy (CIM), is provided considering an off-axis holographic configuration for retrieving the cross-correlation of the two interferometric complex amplitude fields in a compact quasi-common path Michelson interferometric configuration. Experimental results for different types of phase samples (resolution test targets for step-by-step calibration and demonstration as well as fixed biosamples) are included.

9. A semi-implicit exactly fully well-balanced relaxation scheme for the Shallow Water Linearized Moment Equations

Abstract: When dealing with shallow water simulations, the velocity profile is often assumed to be constant along the vertical axis. However, since in many applications this is not the case, modeling errors can be significant. Hence, in this work, we deal with the Shallow Water Linearized Moment Equations (SWLME), in which the velocity is no longer constant in the vertical direction, where a polynomial expansion around the mean value is considered. The linearized version implies neglecting the non-linear terms of the basis coefficients in the higher order equations. As a result, the model is always hyperbolic and the stationary solutions can be more easily computed. Then, our objective is to propose an efficient, accurate and robust numerical scheme for the SWLME model, specially adapted for low Froude number situations. Hence, we describe a semi-implicit second order exactly fully well-balanced method. More specifically, a splitting is performed to separate acoustic and material phenomena. The acoustic waves are treated in an implicit manner to gain in efficiency when dealing with subsonic flow regimes, whereas the second order of accuracy is achieved thanks to a polynomial reconstruction and Strang-splitting method. We also exploit a reconstruction operator to achieve the fully well-balanced character of the method. Extensive numerical tests demonstrate the well-balanced properties and large speed-up compared to traditional methods.

Abstract: We study image segmentation in the biological domain, particularly trait and part segmentation from specimen images (e.g., butterfly wing stripes or beetle body parts). This is a crucial, fine-grained task that aids in understanding the biology of organisms. The conventional approach involves hand-labeling masks, often for hundreds of images per species, and training a segmentation model to generalize these labels to other images, which can be exceedingly laborious. We present a label-efficient method named Static Segmentation by Tracking (SST). SST is built upon the insight: while specimens of the same species have inherent variations, the traits and parts we aim to segment show up consistently. This motivates us to concatenate specimen images into a ``pseudo-video'' and reframe trait and part segmentation as a tracking problem. Concretely, SST generates masks for unlabeled images by propagating annotated or predicted masks from the ``pseudo-preceding'' images. Powered by Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM~2) initially developed for video segmentation, we show that SST can achieve high-quality trait and part segmentation with merely one labeled image per species -- a breakthrough for analyzing specimen images. We further develop a cycle-consistent loss to fine-tune the model, again using one labeled image. Additionally, we highlight the broader potential of SST, including one-shot instance segmentation on images taken in the wild and trait-based image retrieval.

11. 2by2: Weakly-Supervised Learning for Global Action Segmentation

Abstract: This paper presents a simple yet effective approach for the poorly investigated task of global action segmentation, aiming at grouping frames capturing the same action across videos of different activities. Unlike the case of videos depicting all the same activity, the temporal order of actions is not roughly shared among all videos, making the task even more challenging. We propose to use activity labels to learn, in a weakly-supervised fashion, action representations suitable for global action segmentation. For this purpose, we introduce a triadic learning approach for video pairs, to ensure intra-video action discrimination, as well as inter-video and inter-activity action association. For the backbone architecture, we use a Siamese network based on sparse transformers that takes as input video pairs and determine whether they belong to the same activity. The proposed approach is validated on two challenging benchmark datasets: Breakfast and YouTube Instructions, outperforming state-of-the-art methods.

12. Regular black holes from thin-shell collapse

Abstract: We establish that regular black holes can form from gravitational collapse. Our model builds on a recent construction that realized regular black holes as exact solutions to purely gravitational theories that incorporate an infinite tower of higher curvature corrections in any dimension $D \ge 5$ [arXiv:2403.04827]. We identify a two-dimensional Horndeski theory that captures the spherically symmetric dynamics of the theories in question and use this to prove a Birkhoff theorem and obtain the generalized Israel junction conditions. Armed with these tools, we consider the collapse of thin shells of pressureless matter, showing that this leads generically to the formation of regular black holes. The interior dynamics we uncover is intricate, consisting of shell bounces and white hole explosions into a new universe. The result is that regular black holes are the unique spherically symmetric solutions of the corresponding theories and also the endpoint of gravitational collapse of matter. 13. Dynamical Formation of Regular Black Holes

Abstract: We study dynamical gravitational collapse in a theory with an infinite tower of higher-derivative corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert action and we show that, under very general conditions, it leads to the formation of regular black holes. Our results are facilitated by the use of a class of theories that possess second-order equations on spherically symmetric metrics, but which are general enough to provide a basis for the gravitational effective action. We analytically solve the collapse of a thin shell of dust and show that it inevitably experiences a bounce at small radius and that its motion can be extended to arbitrary proper time. The collapse of the shell always gives rise to a singularity-free, geodesically complete spacetime that contains horizons if the total mass is above a critical value. In that case, the shell bounces into a new universe through a white hole explosion. Our construction provides, to the best of our knowlege, the first fully dynamical description of formation of regular black holes, and it suggests that higher-derivative corrections may be the most natural way to resolve the singularities of Einstein's theory., Comment: 5 pages + appendices; 2 figures

14. Fungal diversity and function in metagenomes sequenced from extreme environments

Abstract: Fungi are increasingly recognized as key players in various extreme environments. Here we present an analysis of publicly-sourced metagenomes from global extreme environments, focusing on fungal taxonomy and function. The majority of 855 selected metagenomes contained scaffolds assigned to fungi. Relative abundance of fungi was as high as 10% of protein-coding genes with taxonomic annotation, with up to 289 fungal genera per sample. Despite taxonomic clustering by environment, fungal communities were more dissimilar than archaeal and bacterial communities, both for within- and between-environment comparisons. Relatively abundant fungal classes in extreme environments included Dothideomycetes, Eurotiomycetes, Leotiomycetes, Pezizomycetes, Saccharomycetes, and Sordariomycetes. Broad generalists and prolific aerial spore formers were the most relatively abundant fungal genera detected in most of the extreme environments, bringing up the question of whether they are actively growing in those environments or just surviving as spores. More specialized fungi were common in some environments, such as zoosporic taxa in cryosphere water and hot springs. Relative abundances of genes involved in adaptation to general, thermal, oxidative, and osmotic stress were greatest in soda lake, acid mine drainage, and cryosphere water samples.

Abstract: The main question of this paper is the following: how much cancellation can the partial sums restricted to the $k$-free integers up to $x$ of a $\pm 1$ multiplicative function $f$ be in terms of $x$? Building upon the recent paper by Q. Liu, Acta Math. Sin. (Engl. Ser.) 39 (2023), no. 12, 2316-2328, we prove that under the Riemann Hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions, we can get $x^{1/(k+1)}$ cancellation when $f$ is a modified quadratic Dirichlet character, i.e., $f$ is completely multiplicative and for some quadratic Dirichlet character $\chi$, $f(p)=\chi(p)$ for all but a finite subset of prime numbers. 18. Quantum Electrodynamics in an Electrolyte Medium Driving Entanglement Between Graphene Sheets

Abstract: The quantum entanglement phenomenon was demonstrated to operate on a bipartite entangled system composed of two single layers of graphene embedded in an electrolytic medium (which did not permit the transport of electrons) and subjected to an external time-dependent electric perturbation driven by a potentiostat equipped with a frequency response analyser. Time-dependent perturbation-mediating entanglement was hypothesised because of the equivalent quantum resistive-capacitive circuit frequency of each single-layer graphene system that obeys quantum electrodynamics principles. \textit{De facto}, quantum electrodynamics, associated with the massless fermionic characteristics in graphene sheets, was observed at room temperature and electrolyte medium under a time-dependent modulation, and the entanglement between the two sheets is consistent with a Hilbertian subspace mathematical examination of the phenomenon. Abstract: We introduce the open source code PHOEBUS (phifty one ergs blows up a star) for astrophysical general relativistic radiation magnetohydrodynamic simulations. PHOEBUS is designed for, but not limited to, high energy astrophysical environments such as core-collapse supernovae, neutron star mergers, black-hole accretion disks, and similar phenomena. General relativistic magnetohydrodynamics are modeled in the Valencia formulation with conservative finite volume methods. Neutrino radiation transport is included with Monte Carlo and moment methods. PHOEBUS is built on the PARTHENON (Grete et al. 2022) performance portable adaptive mesh refinement framework, uses a GPU first development strategy, and is capable of modeling a large dynamic range in space and time. PHOEBUS utilizes KOKKOS for on-node parallelism and supports both CPU and GPU architectures. We describe the physical model employed in PHOEBUS, the numerical methods used, and demonstrate a suite of test problems to showcase its abilities. 20. Towards Assurance of LLM Adversarial Robustness using Ontology-Driven Argumentation

21. MLissard: Multilingual Long and Simple Sequential Reasoning Benchmarks

Abstract: Language models are now capable of solving tasks that require dealing with long sequences consisting of hundreds of thousands of tokens. However, they often fail on tasks that require repetitive use of simple rules, even on sequences that are much shorter than those seen during training. For example, state-of-the-art LLMs can find common items in two lists with up to 20 items but fail when lists have 80 items. In this paper, we introduce MLissard, a multilingual benchmark designed to evaluate models' abilities to process and generate texts of varied lengths and offers a mechanism for controlling sequence complexity. Our evaluation of open-source and proprietary models show a consistent decline in performance across all models and languages as the complexity of the sequence increases. Surprisingly, the use of in-context examples in languages other than English helps increase extrapolation performance significantly. More specifically, MRI scanner and sequence specifications impose a trade-off between temporal resolution, spatial resolution, signal-to-noise ratio, and scan time. Deep Learning (DL) Super-Resolution (SR) methods have emerged as a promising solution to enhance fMRI resolution, generating high-resolution (HR) images from low-resolution (LR) images typically acquired with lower scanning times. However, most existing SR approaches depend on supervised DL techniques, which require training ground truth (GT) HR data, which is often difficult to acquire and simultaneously sets a bound for how far SR can go. In this paper, we introduce a novel self-supervised DL SR model that combines a DL network with an analytical approach and Total Variation (TV) regularization. Abstract: This paper presents an approach to developing assurance cases for adversarial robustness and regulatory compliance in large language models (LLMs). Focusing on both natural and code language tasks, we explore the vulnerabilities these models face, including adversarial attacks based on jailbreaking, heuristics, and randomization. We propose a layered framework incorporating guardrails at various stages of LLM deployment, aimed at mitigating these attacks and ensuring compliance with the EU AI Act. Our approach includes a meta-layer for dynamic risk management and reasoning, crucial for addressing the evolving nature of LLM vulnerabilities. 26. Higher-dimensional Willmore energy as holographic entanglement entropy

Abstract: The vacuum entanglement entropy of a general conformal field theory (CFT) in $d=5$ spacetime dimensions contains a universal term, $F(A)$, which has a complicated and non-local dependence on the geometric details of the region $A$ and the theory. Analogously to the previously known $d=3$ case, we prove that for CFTs in $d=5$ which are holographically dual to Einstein gravity, $F(A)$ is equal to a four-dimensional version of the ``Willmore energy'' associated to a doubled and closed version of the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) surface of $A$ embedded in $\mathbb{R}^5$. This generalized Willmore energy is shown to arise from a conformal-invariant codimension-two functional obtained by evaluating six-dimensional Conformal Gravity on the conically-singular orbifold of the replica trick. The new functional involves an integral over the doubled RT surface of a linear combination of three quartic terms in extrinsic curvatures and is free from ultraviolet divergences by construction. We verify explicitly the validity of our new formula for various entangling regions and argue that, as opposed to the $d=3$ case, $F(A)$ is not globally minimized by a round ball $A=\mathbb{B}^4$. Rather, $F(A)$ can take arbitrarily positive and negative values as a function of $A$. Abstract: This paper introduces a novel track-length extension fitting algorithm for measuring the kinetic energies of inelastically interacting particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe the impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Abstract: One of the primary challenges in live cell culture observation is achieving high-contrast imaging with minimal impact on sample behavior. Quantitative phase imaging (QPI) techniques address this by providing label-free, high-contrast images of transparent samples. Measurement system influence may be further reduced by imaging samples under low illumination intensity (low photon budget - LPB), thereby minimizing photostimulation, phototoxicity, and photodamage, and enabling high-speed imaging. LPB imaging is challenging in QPI due to significant camera shot noise and quantification noise. Digital in-line holographic microscopy (DIHM), working with or without lenses, is a QPI technique known for its robustness to quantification noise. However, reducing simultaneously the camera shot noise and the inherent in-line holographic twin image disturbances remain a critical, yet unaddressed, challenge. This study introduces an innovative iterative Gabor averaging (IGA) algorithm designed specifically for filling this important scientific gap in multi-frame DIHM under LPB conditions. We evaluated the performance of the IGA on simulated data showing that it outperformed traditional algorithms in terms of reconstruction accuracy under high noise conditions. Those results were corroborated by experimental validation involving high-speed imaging of dynamic sperm cells and a phase test target under significantly reduced illumination power. Additionally, the IGA algorithm proved successful in reconstructing optically thin samples, which typically produce low signal-to-noise ratio holograms even under high photon budget conditions. These advancements facilitate photostimulation-free and high-speed imaging of dynamic biological samples and enhance the capability to image samples with extremely low optical thickness, potentially transforming various applications in biomedical and environmental imaging.

Abstract: A search for Dark Sectors is performed using the unique M2 beam line at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. New particles ($X$) could be produced in the bremsstrahlung-like reaction of high energy 160 GeV muons impinging on an active target, $\mu N\rightarrow\mu NX$, followed by their decays, $X\rightarrow\text{invisible}$. The experimental signature would be a scattered single muon from the target, with about less than half of its initial energy and no activity in the sub-detectors located downstream the interaction point. The full sample of the 2022 run is analyzed through the missing energy/momentum channel, with a total statistics of $(1.98\pm0.02)\times10^{10}$ muons on target. We demonstrate that various muon-philic scenarios involving different types of mediators, such as scalar or vector particles, can be probed simultaneously with such a technique. For the vector-case, besides a $L_\mu-L_\tau$ $Z'$ vector boson, we also consider an invisibly decaying dark photon ($A'\rightarrow\text{invisible}$). This search is complementary to NA64 running with electrons and positrons, thus, opening the possibility to expand the exploration of the thermal light dark matter parameter space by combining the results obtained with the three beams., Comment: 24 pages, 22 figures

32. Full Stokes-vector inversion of the solar Mg II h & k lines

Abstract: The polarization of the Mg II h & k resonance lines is the result of the joint action of scattering processes and the magnetic field induced Hanle, Zeeman, and magneto-optical effects, thus holding significant potential for the diagnostic of the magnetic field in the solar chromosphere. The Chromospheric LAyer Spectro-Polarimeter sounding rocket experiment, carried out in 2019, successfully measured at each position along the 196 arcsec spectrograph slit the wavelength variation of the four Stokes parameters in the spectral region of this doublet around 280 nm, both in an active region plage and in a quiet region close to the limb. We consider some of these CLASP2 Stokes profiles and apply to them the recently-developed HanleRT Tenerife Inversion Code, which assumes a one-dimensional model atmosphere for each spatial pixel under consideration (i.e., it neglects the effects of horizontal radiative transfer). We find that the non-magnetic causes of symmetry breaking, due to the horizontal inhomogeneities and the gradients of the horizontal components of the macroscopic velocity in the solar atmosphere, have a significant impact on the linear polarization profiles. By introducing such non-magnetic causes of symmetry breaking as parameters in our inversion code, we can successfully fit the Stokes profiles and provide an estimation of the magnetic field vector. For example, in the quiet region pixels, where no circular polarization signal is detected, we find that the magnetic field strength in the upper chromosphere varies between 1 and 20 gauss., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

33. Long-distance N-partite information for fermionic CFTs

Abstract: The mutual information, $I_2$, of general spacetime regions is expected to capture the full data of any conformal field theory (CFT). For spherical regions, this data can be accessed from long-distance expansions of the mutual information of pairs of regions as well as of suitably chosen linear combinations of mutual informations involving more than two regions and their unions -- namely, the $N$-partite information, $I_N$. In particular, the leading term in the $I_2$ long-distance expansion is fully determined by the spin and conformal dimension of the lowest-dimensional primary of the theory. When the operator is a scalar, an analogous formula for the tripartite information $I_3$ contains information about the OPE coefficient controlling the fusion of such operator into its conformal family. When it is a fermionic field, the coefficient of the leading term in $I_3$ vanishes instead. In this paper we present an explicit general formula for the long-distance four-partite information $I_4$ of general CFTs whose lowest-dimensional operator is a fermion $\psi$. The result involves a combination of four-point and two-point functions of $\psi$ and $\bar{\psi}$ evaluated at the locations of the regions. We perform explicit checks of the formula for a $(2+1)$-dimensional free fermion in the lattice finding perfect agreement. The generalization of our result to the $N$-partite information (for arbitrary $N$) is also discussed. Similarly to $I_3$, we argue that $I_5$ vanishes identically at leading order for general fermionic theories, while the $I_N$ with $N=7,9, \dots$ only vanish when the theory is free.

34. Kasner eons in Lovelock black holes

Abstract: In the vicinity of space-like singularities, general relativity predicts that the metric behaves, at each point, as a Kasner space which undergoes a series of "Kasner epochs" and "eras" characterized by certain transition rules. The period during which this process takes place defines a "Kasner eon", which comes to an end when higher-curvature or quantum effects become relevant. When higher-curvature densities are included in the action, spacetime can undergo transitions into additional Kasner eons. During each eon, the metric behaves locally as a Kasner solution to the higher-curvature density controlling the dynamics. In this paper we identify the presence of Kasner eons in the interior of static and spherically symmetric Lovelock gravity black holes. We determine the conditions under which eons occur and study the Kasner metrics which characterize them, as well as the transitions between them. We show that the null energy condition implies a monotonicity property for the effective Kasner exponent at the end of the Einsteinian eon. We also characterize the Kasner solutions of more general higher-curvature theories of gravity. In particular, we observe that the Einstein gravity condition that the sum of the Kasner exponents adds up to one, $\sum_{i=1}^{D-1}p_i=1$, admits a universal generalization in the form of a family of Kasner metrics satisfying $\sum_{i=1}^{D-1}p_i=2n -1$ which exists for any order-$n$ higher-curvature density and in general dimensions., Comment: 27 pages, 5 figures

36. Assessing Atlanta's Placed-Based College Scholarship

Abstract: We investigate whether and how Achieve Atlanta's college scholarship and associated services impact college enrollment, persistence, and graduation among Atlanta Public School graduates experiencing low household income. Qualifying for the scholarship of up to $5,000 per year does not meaningfully change college enrollment among those near the high school GPA eligibility thresholds. However, scholarship receipt does have large and statistically significant effects on early college persistence (i.e., 14%) that continue through BA degree completion within 4 years (22%), although scholarship receipt does not impact graduation from 2-year colleges. We discuss how the selection criteria and processes of place-based programs intended for those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds may influence results for different types of students.

37. Listening to Learn: Using a Talking Circle Approach to Understand the Indigenous STEM Student Experience

Abstract: Indigenous students often see higher education as a means by which they can meet their familial, community, and cultural responsibilities. Unfortunately, many collegiate institutions emphasize values and social protocols, a way of understanding, and a way of knowing that are unfamiliar and even hostile to Indigenous worldviews. To better understand the experience of Native and Indigenous STEM Students at our institution, we listened to students, alumni, faculty, and staff through a series of online forums modeled on the Indigenous tradition of Talking Circles. The discussion from participants in the Talking Circles resulted in 464 coded responses characterized as supports, barriers, and ideas in STEM. The results show how Indigenous students benefit from the integration of cultural wealth that resides in Indigenous knowledge, practices, and protocols. We have also gained insights into the importance of an Indigenized campus culture and have time-tested and effective programs that teach us how to promote such a culture. We review the major themes identified and provide recommendations to others interested in supporting Indigenous students in STEM.

38. Participation in Undergraduate Research Reduces Equity Gaps in STEM Graduation Rates

Abstract: Many students who enroll in a public U.S. 4-y college will not graduate. The odds of completing a college degree are even lower for students who have been marginalized in higher education, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. Can undergraduate research increase a student's likelihood of graduating college and close educational equity gaps in college completion? To answer this question, we use data from six public U.S. universities (N = 120,308 students) and use Propensity Score Matching to generate a comparison group for analyses. We conducted logistic regressions on graduation rates and equity gaps in 4 and 6 y using the matched comparison group and undergraduate researchers in STEM (n = 2727). When being compared with like-peers and controlling for background characteristics and prior academic performance, students who participated in undergraduate research were twice as likely to graduate in 4 y and over 10 times as likely to graduate in 6 y. We also found that equity gaps in 4-y graduation rates for students of color, low-income, and first-generation students were cut in half for undergraduate researchers. At 6 y, these gaps were completely closed for undergraduate researchers. As we seek ways to close education gaps and increase graduation rates, undergraduate research can be a meaningful practice to improve student success.

Abstract: ObjectiveTo characterize the correlation, agreement and concordance of cardiac output (CO) measured with transthoracic ultrasound and the correlation and concordance of aortic blood flow (ABF) minute distance (MD) measured by transesophageal Doppler with CO measured by pulmonary artery thermodilution (PATD) in cats.Study designExperimental study.AnimalsA group of six healthy male neutered cats, aged 2-8 years and weighing 5.3 ± 0.3 kg.MethodsCats were anesthetized with isoflurane in oxygen. CO was measured by PATD (COPATD) and transthoracic echocardiography (COECHO). ABF MD was measured using an esophageal Doppler flow probe aligned with descending ABF. All measurements were made under three conditions: dexmedetomidine (20 μg kg-1) intravenously; atipamezole (200 μg kg-1) intramuscularly and atropine (20 μg kg-1) intravenously as needed to achieve a minimum heart rate of 140 beats minute-1; and dopamine (20 μg kg-1 minute-1) intravenously in that order. Correlation between COPATD and COECHO, and COPATD and Doppler MD was evaluated using repeated measures correlation. Agreement between COPATD and COECHO was evaluated using Bland-Altman method. Differences between consecutive pairs of CO measurements were calculated for concordance analysis.ResultsCorrelation between COPATD and COECHO and between COPATD and MD was significant (p < 0.001), with correlation coefficients greater than 0.92. A bias of > 27% and upper limits of agreement of 66% were found between COPATD and COECHO. Concordance rate with COPATD was 76-80% for COECHO and 72% for MD.Conclusions and clinical relevanceEchocardiographic methods for the measurement of CO showed poor agreement and concordance with PATD. MD showed poor concordance with PATD. As such, these methods cannot be used as an alternative to PATD nor can they appropriately track changes in CO in anesthetized cats.

Abstract: Alterations in the nuclear envelope are linked to a variety of rare diseases termed laminopathies. A single amino acid substitution at position 12 (A12T) of the human nuclear envelope protein BAF (Barrier to Autointegration Factor) causes Néstor-Guillermo Progeria Syndrome (NGPS). This premature ageing condition leads to growth retardation and severe skeletal defects, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Here, we have generated a novel in vivo model for NGPS by modifying the baf-1 locus in C. elegans to mimic the human NGPS mutation. These baf-1(G12T) mutant worms displayed multiple phenotypes related to fertility, lifespan, and stress resistance. Importantly, nuclear morphology deteriorated faster during aging in baf-1(G12T) compared to wild-type animals, recapitulating an important hallmark of cells from progeria patients. Although localization of BAF-1(G12T) was similar to wild-type BAF-1, lamin accumulation at the nuclear envelope was reduced in mutant worms. Tissue-specific chromatin binding and transcriptome analyses showed reduced BAF-1 association in most genes deregulated by the baf-1(G12T) mutation, suggesting that altered BAF chromatin association induces NGPS phenotypes via altered gene expression.

Abstract: Forecasting plant responses under global change is a critical but challenging endeavour. Despite seemingly idiosyncratic responses of species to global change, greater generalisation of 'winners' and 'losers' may emerge from considering how species functional traits influence responses and how these responses scale to the community level. Here, we synthesised six long-term global change experiments combined with locally measured functional traits. We quantified the change in abundance and probability of establishment through time for 70 alpine plant species and then assessed if leaf and stature traits were predictive of species and community responses across nitrogen addition, snow addition and warming treatments. Overall, we found that plants with more resource-acquisitive trait strategies increased in abundance but each global change factor was related to different functional strategies. Nitrogen addition favoured species with lower leaf nitrogen, snow addition favoured species with cheaply constructed leaves and warming showed few consistent trends. Community-weighted mean changes in trait values in response to nitrogen addition, snow addition and warming were often different from species-specific trait effects on abundance and establishment, reflecting in part the responses and traits of dominant species. Together, these results highlight that the effects of traits can differ by scale and response of interest.

42. UTrack: Multi-Object Tracking with Uncertain Detections

Abstract: The tracking-by-detection paradigm is the mainstream in multi-object tracking, associating tracks to the predictions of an object detector. Although exhibiting uncertainty through a confidence score, these predictions do not capture the entire variability of the inference process. For safety and security critical applications like autonomous driving, surveillance, etc., knowing this predictive uncertainty is essential though. Therefore, we introduce, for the first time, a fast way to obtain the empirical predictive distribution during object detection and incorporate that knowledge in multi-object tracking. Our mechanism can easily be integrated into state-of-the-art trackers, enabling them to fully exploit the uncertainty in the detections. Additionally, novel association methods are introduced that leverage the proposed mechanism. Abstract: In this work, we shall analyze the necessity of a proper definition of the dual structure for Elko spinors, and singular spinors in general. We examine in detail why the Dirac dual structure fails and it is not functional for these cases, highlighting all the physical consequences of this misdirection. The approach considered here is different from the one usually taken in current literature. We pinpoint the shortcomings that this dual structure brings to particle interpretation, and propagator structure, as well as the implications in non-locality, and the existence of negative energy levels. Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

45. Mapping the longitudinal magnetic field in the atmosphere of an active region plage from the inversion of the near-ultraviolet CLASP2.1 spectropolarimetric data

Abstract: We apply the HanleRT Tenerife Inversion Code to the spectro-polarimetric observations obtained by the Chromospheric LAyer SpectroPolarimeter. This suborbital space experiment measured the variation with wavelength of the four Stokes parameters in the near-ultraviolet spectral region of the Mg II h & k lines over a solar disk area containing part of an active region plage and the edge of a sunspot penumbra. We infer the stratification of the temperature, the electron density, the line of-sight velocity, the micro-turbulent velocity, and the longitudinal component of the magnetic field from the observed intensity and circular polarization profiles. The inferred model atmosphere shows larger temperature and electron density in the plage and the superpenumbra regions than in the quiet regions. The shape of the plage region in terms of its brightness is similar to the pattern of the inferred longitudinal component of the magnetic field in the chromosphere, as well as to that of the overlying moss observed by AIA in the 171 A band, which suggests a similar magnetic origin for the heating in both the plage and the moss region. Moreover, this heating is particularly significant in the regions with larger inferred magnetic flux. In contrast, in the superpenumbra, the regions with larger electron density and temperature are usually found in between these regions with larger magnetic flux, suggesting that the details of the heating mechanism in the chromosphere of the superpenumbra may be different to those in the plage, but with the magnetic field still playing a key role., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Abstract: ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

49. Magnetic field diagnostics of prominences with the Mg II k line: 3D Stokes inversions versus traditional methods

Abstract: The Mg II k resonance line is commonly used for diagnosing the solar chromosphere. We theoretically investigated its intensity and polarization in solar prominences, taking 3D radiative transfer and Hanle and Zeeman effects into account. We used an optically thick 3D model representative of a solar prominence and applied several inversion methods to the synthetic Stokes profiles, clarifying their pros and cons for inferring prominence magnetic fields. We conclude that the self-consistent 3D inversion with radiative transfer is necessary to determine the magnetic field vector, although its geometry cannot be inferred with full fidelity. We also demonstrate that more traditional methods, such as those based on the weak field approximation or the constant-property slab assumption, can offer useful information under certain conditions., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: The determination of the direction of a stellar core collapse via its neutrino emission is crucial for the identification of the progenitor for a multimessenger follow-up. A highly effective method of reconstructing supernova directions within the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is introduced. The supernova neutrino pointing resolution is studied by simulating and reconstructing electron-neutrino charged-current absorption on $^{40}$Ar and elastic scattering of neutrinos on electrons. Procedures to reconstruct individual interactions, including a newly developed technique called ``brems flipping'', as well as the burst direction from an ensemble of interactions are described. Performance of the burst direction reconstruction is evaluated for supernovae happening at a distance of 10 kpc for a specific supernova burst flux model. The pointing resolution is found to be 3.4 degrees at 68% coverage for a perfect interaction-channel classification and a fiducial mass of 40 kton, and 6.6 degrees for a 10 kton fiducial mass respectively. Assuming a 4% rate of charged-current interactions being misidentified as elastic scattering, DUNE's burst pointing resolution is found to be 4.3 degrees (8.7 degrees) at 68% coverage., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures
