Resumen: La finalidad de este artículo es contribuir al conocimiento de los lugares con manifestaciones rupestres documentadas en la cuenca de río Loco en Perú y mediante su análisis contextual, dentro del paisaje donde se enmarcan, inferir las estrategias de ocupación del territorio, relaciones y comportamientos culturales de la población del valle en la época prehispánica. Presentamos una lectura conjunta de estos sitios, comenzando por la caracterización del paisaje de la cuenca, para pasar a centrarnos en las grafías pintadas, sus rasgos formales, asociaciones, cánones y disposición en los paneles. A continuación, describimos la secuencia cultural asociada a las pinturas de dos abrigos. Se trata de contextos inéditos para establecer el uso y temporalidad de estos lugares desde su ocupación por grupos cazadores-recolectores, probablemente, en el tránsito del Pleistoceno al Holoceno, hasta el período Intermedio Temprano. Se discuten los datos espaciales y contextuales obtenidos, comparándolos con los conocidos para la región, con lo que se abren perspectivas novedosas en relación con las topografías y los comportamientos rituales relacionados con la actividad gráfica en los soportes rocosos. Abstract: The purpose of this article is to expand on the information available on the Loco river basin rock art sites in Peru. To this end, a contextual analysis is applied within the landscape where they are framed, to infer the territory’s occupation modalities, the relations between places, and the cultural behaviors of the inhabitants of the valley in pre-Hispanic times. We present a new holistic reading of these sites which includes the characterization of the basin’s landscape to then focus on the art itself, including, formal characteristics, associations, conventions, and arrangements on the panels. On the baisis of this study, we propose a cultural sequence for two of the shelters. These are unique contexts which establish the use and temporality of these sites, from their initial occupation by hunter-gatherer groups, probably during the Pleistocene to Holocene transition and subsequently their use by horticulturalists during the Early Intermediate Period. The spatial and contextual data obtained are discussed and compared with that on other known sites in the region. In turn, this opens up new perspectives related to topographies and ritual behaviors associated to rock-art. Resumo: O objetivo deste artigo é contribuir para o conhecimento dos lugares com manifestações rupestres documentadas na bacia do rio Loco no Peru e, a partir de sua análise contextual, dentro da paisagem onde se encontram, inferir as estratégias de ocupação do território e as relações e comportamentos culturais da população do vale na época pré-hispânica. Apresentamos uma leitura conjunta desses sítios, começando pela caracterização da paisagem da bacia para passar a nos centralizar nas gravuras pintadas, seus traços formais, associações, cânones e disposição nos painéis. A seguir, descrevemos a sequência cultural associada às pinturas de dois sítios. Trata-se de contextos inéditos para estabelecer o uso e temporalidade desses lugares desde sua ocupação por grupos caçadores-coletadores, provavelmente na transição do pleistoceno ao holoceno, até o período intermediário precoce. São discutidos os dados espaciais e contextuais obtidos, comparando-os com os conhecidos para a região; com isso, com são abertas perspectivas novas quanto às topografias e comportamentos rituais relacionados com essa atividade nas superfícies rochosas.

De Newgrange en Irlande à Hal Saflieni à Malte ou Gavrinis en Bretagne, les tombeaux néolithiques sont connus pour leur caractère monumental. Loin d’être de simples “contenants” mortuaires, destinés uniquement à recueillir les restes corporels des défunts, ces tombes sont des architectures complexes et multiples, conçues pour accueillir des rites funéraires élaborés, impliquant plusieurs acteurs, plusieurs temps et plusieurs espaces cérémoniels. Pour l’archéologue, l’organisation spatiale de ces architectures et de leurs contenants constitue un véritable fil conducteur permettant de comprendre les pratiques funéraires et les croyances des sociétés néolithiques. Combinant études récentes et synthèses régionales, cet ouvrage explore la configuration de l’architecture de ces tombes (chambres mégalithiques, hypogées, coffres sous tumulus ou cairns, tertres, etc.), l’organisation spatiale des dépôts funéraires et des décors pariétaux, et les relations entre les tombes et leur espace topographique naturel (le paysage). Ce tour d’horizon européen expose ainsi les différentes manières dont les sociétés néolithiques concevaient, construisaient et utilisaient l’espace des morts en Europe de 5000 à 2000 avant J.-C. Mais il offre également des pistes permettant d’interpréter ces choix. From Newgrange in Ireland to Hal Saflieni in Malta or Gavrinis in Brittany, Neolithic tombs are well known for their monumental nature. Far from being simple mortuary “containers”, only aimed at receiving dead bodies, these tombs are complex and multiple architectures that were designed to host elaborate burial rituals involving several actors and several ceremonial times and spaces. For archaeologists, the spatial organisation of these architectures and their contents is a thread to investigate and understand the burial practices and beliefs of Neolithic communities. Combining recent fieldworks and regional surveys, it explores the configuration of tombs architecture (megalithic chambered tombs, rock-cut tombs, cists under tumulus or cairns, barrows, etc.), the spatial organisation of bodies, grave goods and imagery, and the relationships between the tombs and their landscape setting. This European overview shows the different ways Neolithic societies thought, built and used the space of the dead in Europe from 5000 to 2000 BC. But it also offers and discusses ideas about the meaning of these spatial choices.

The presence of painted, carved or sculpted decorations in European funerary contexts makes megalithic art a basic reference in order to classify the use of burial areas. Complex graphic programmes of paintings, engravings and sculptures constituted an essential part of funerary rites. The burial models provided by the Iberian Peninsula are a great contribution to the study of funerary graphics. Moreover, their concurrent open air versions open unforeseen expectations for a re-evaluation of the whole of megalithic art in Europe. La présence de décorations peintes, taillées ou sculptées dans des contextes funéraires européens font de l'art mégalithique une référence de base pour classer l'utilisation des aires d'enterrement. Les programmes graphiques complexes de peintures, des gravures et des sculptures ont constitué une partie essentielle de rites funéraires. Les modèles d'enterrement fournis par la Péninsule Ibérique sont une grande contribution à l'étude des décors funéraires. De plus, leurs pendants simultanés en plein air ouvrent des perspectives inespérées pour une re-évaluation de tout l'art mégalithique en Europe. La presencia de decoraciones pintadas, grabadas o esculpidas en los contextos funerarios europeos, hace del conjunto del arte megalítico una referencia básica sobre las sistemáticas de uso de los espacios sepulcrales. Programas gráficos complejos de pinturas, grabados y esculturas constituyeron una parte fundamental del dispositivo ritual funerario. La aportación que ofrecen los modelos peninsulares al estudio de los programas gráficos funerarios y a las versiones al aire libre que lo acompañan, abre inéditas expectativas para nuevas lecturas del arte megalítico europeo en su conjunto.

Este trabajo tiene por objeto presentar el sitio megalítico de La Torre-La Janera, ubicado en el Bajo Guadiana (Huelva). Su investigación ha integrado varias técnicas de muestreo, análisis y documentación: prospecciones, geoarqueología, tecnologías de información geográfica y fotogrametría. Los resultados más destacados han sido: a) la constatación de una gran cantidad y variedad de megalitos (menhires, dólmenes, túmulos, cistas y recintos) de diferentes periodos crono-culturales construidos en grauvaca, parte de ellos novedosos en la zona; b) la presencia de monumentos que integran afloramientos como elementos arquitectónicos y simbólicos; c) la probable sincronía entre los menhires y las estructuras funerarias. Su investigación contribuye al avance del conocimiento del megalitismo en la península ibérica, abriendo futuras líneas de estudio, nuevas problemáticas y otras vías de interpretación sobre la génesis y complejidad de la monumentalidad prehistórica Research on the megalithic site of La Torre-La Janera, located in the Lower Guadiana (Huelva), has integrated several non-invasive techniques of sampling, analysis and documentation: prospections, geoarchaeology, geographic information technologies and photogrammetry. The most important results have been: a) the discovery of a large number of various types of megaliths (standing-stones, dolmens, mounds, cists and enclosures) from different chrono-cultural periods built in greywacke, some of which are new to the area; b) the presence of monuments integrating outcrops as architectural and symbolic elements; c) the probable synchrony between standing-stones and funerary structures. This research contributes to the advancement of the knowledge of the megalithism in the Iberian Peninsula, opening up future lines of study, new problems and other ways of interpreting the genesis and complexity of prehistoric monumentality.

Para Trabajos de Prehistoria este último número del año 2022 marca el final de un ciclo y el ilusionante arranque de otro lleno de novedades. Con el inicio de 2023 se producirán tres importantes transformaciones: la revista cambiará de equipo editorial, de formato y de forma de gestión. Todo ello se produce en un momento de cierre de un ciclo generacional no solo en la revista, sino en la práctica totalidad de la academia española. En este contexto, Trabajos de Prehistoria se renueva manteniendo el firme compromiso de seguir sirviendo a la excelencia científica y al colectivo de prehistoria-dores/as que la produce.Todos estos cambios suceden en paralelo a los producidos en la estructura organizativa de Editorial CSIC, unos cambios encaminados a reforzar su profesionalización y protagonismo en la política de difusión científica institucional. El Servicio de Publicaciones del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, creado en 1940, solo un año después de la fundación de la institución (López Sánchez y Fernández Gallego 2021) se convirtió en Editorial CSIC en agosto de 2019, bajo la dirección de Pura Fernández. Editorial CSIC se integra en 2021 en el área de Cultura Científica y Ciencia Ciudadana que, en 2022, pasa a ser una de las nuevas Vicepresidencias adjuntas de la institución. Esta trayectoria indica con claridad la importancia que el CSIC ha concedido y concede a la publicación como forma por excelencia de la comunicación científica. En este sentido, la modernización de Trabajos de Prehistoria ha sido históricamente posible gracias al apoyo y compromiso de nuestra institución con la difusión de una ciencia excelente y abierta.

The study of adornments found in the necropolis at Valle de las Higueras (Huecas, Toledo) has determined the morphotypology and mineral composition of one quadrangular pendant and 341 stone beads. Most of the beads are short (length ≤ 5 mm), but within this regularity series can be differentiated that might be the result of standardised fabrication processes and different times of acquisition. Portable X-ray fluorescence (p-XRF) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis identified the use of phyllosilicates as sepiolite and clinochlore, and above all variscite, a mineral that became especially important for adornments in the Iberian Peninsula in the 3rd millennium BC. The inland location of the necropolis, distant from source areas, certifies its remote origin, as far away as northwest Zamora according to the chronological framework. It is still not possible to determine for sure the source of the variscite at Valle de las Higueras. However, the inland location of the necropolis, distant from source areas, certifies its remote origin. The chronology suggests that it might have come from the north-west, in the area of Zamora. Archaeological and chronological data obtained in tombs in the necropolis, together with other inland sites, contribute to understanding variscite circulation in the Iberian Peninsula in the Chalcolithic. It was restricted to a few individuals, both adults and children, who wore necklaces and bracelets. Distance did not condition the arrival of variscite, but the small amounts suggest it was traded together with other ostentation elements, such as sea shells, cinnabar and amber. The heterogeneous regional panorama displays differences in the demand, use and acquisition of variscite depending on the socioeconomic organisation and connection to exchange networks.

International audience; The megalithic monuments of Europe are some of the oldest in the world. Despite the wide diversity of forms throughout the conti-nent as a whole, it is the Atlantic façade that contains almost all of those megalithic monuments that are thought to be the oldest. Defining precisely the geographical contours of what is meant by the Atlantic façade, however, requires the inclusion of some more continental areas, both in France and in the Iberian Peninsula, since the bipartition of Neolithic Europe between Bandkeramik and Mediterranean groups is now perceived as more permeable than once thought. There is also the potential contribution from Meso-lithic traditions. The origin of these Atlantic megalithic monuments has been debated for many years; the question takes a different form, however, depending on whether the problem is approached from the point of view of the very first stone monuments, or from the idea of mobilizing very large stones to create architecture, or whether it is the symbolic and social changes associated with new funerary practices that are considered. The question also arises in very different terms depending on whether the focus is on Great Britain and Ireland, on western France or on the Iberian Peninsula. Although it is generally accepted that the first British and Irish megalithic monuments were derived from the monuments of northern France, the relationship between the first French and Iberian megaliths is less easy to define. The question of chronologies is here of paramount importance, although the problem of recycling with megaliths erected more than once on the same site must not be ignored. For this communication we propose to bring together three researchers who are very active in the study of megaliths for each of these regions of Europe.

Pocos territorios en Europa reúnen la concentración de estelas en piedra que se documentan entre el Tajo y el Duero. La arqueología asegura amplias posibilidades extractivas, con un claro centro neurálgico en el actual distrito de Castelo Branco. Desde los primeros descubrimientos de piezas tan singulares como las de São Martinho, hasta el registro actual, la variedad y diacronía de estelas y menhires en piedra resulta excepcional en el contexto ibérico y europeo. La tradicional lectura, que alejaba los viejos menhires de las estelas del Bronce Final, queda muy matizada ante el uso de referencias temáticas y técnicas semejantes. En este texto aportamos otro argumento a sumar a esas similitudes, con la reutilización de los antiguos soportes como base material para la generación de las estelas del Bronce Final. Las imágenes humanas que se grabaron en estas memorias en piedra expresan narrativas sociales elaboradas. Las secuencias gráficas que argumentamos aseguran el papel político de estas piezas como justificaciones materiales de pasados ancestrales. Indudablemente albergan relatos orales sobre la relación entre los viejos ancestros y los nuevos líderes, justificando el orden del entramado económico asociado al control de la extracción y comercio del metal. Few places in Europe concentrate as many stone stelae as the area between the Tagus and the Douro. Archaeology has shown the ample possibilities for metal mining, the modern region of Castelo Branco being the epicentre in the area. From the first discoveries of such unique objects as the São Martinho stelae to the current record, the variety and diachronicity of stone stelae and menhirs is exceptional on the Iberian and European scales. The traditional interpretation that differentiated between the old menhirs and Late Bronze Age stelae has been nuanced by the evidence of similar themes and techniques. Another argument presented here is the use of the old stones as the basic material to produce the Late Bronze Age stelae. Human images carved on these memorial stones express elaborate social narratives. The graphic sequences described here demonstrate the ‘political’ role of these stones and material justification of ancestral pasts. They were undoubtedly imbued with oral tales about old ancestors and new leaders, to justify the order of the economic system associated with mining and metal trade.
