The solar pyrolysis of materials has emerged as a promising technology for their efficient conversion into solid char, syngas and oil. The technology has its challenges, however, as constraints such as solar intermittence and scalability must be overcame for solar pyrolysis to thrive. The present work presents a review of the developments in solar pyrolysis considering a such as development by country, solar technology employed, etcetera. Moreover, details on the challenges and potential future developments are presented. It was found that most of the development in solar pyrolysis has been focused on waste-handling, and that a particular challenge exists in an adequate control system to achieve the desired end products.

The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of two intravitreal antiangiogenic drugs, ranibizumab and aflibercept, in a Mexican population over a period of 5 years, evaluating the improvement in visual acuity (VA) and central retinal thickness (CRT) in a real-world scenario. This is a retrospective study with subjects diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy (DR), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), and diabetic macular edema (DME) receiving intravitreal injections of ranibizumab and/or aflibercept. In this study, we analyzed 588 eyes of 294 patients who received intravitreal antiangiogenic injections. The results showed an improvement regardless of antiangiogenic treatment or diagnosis in both VA and CRT. We found that both aflibercept and ranibizumab improved VA, while subjects with DME responded less to antiangiogenic treatment (p < 0.05), and that this difference did not correspond to the CRT measured by OCT. These results support evidence that intravitreal antiangiogenic medications are effective for ophthalmic complications of diabetes in our population; however, damage to visual structures is not reversed in most patients. And that the perception by the patient (VA) and that of the ophthalmologist (CRT) do not completely correlate in our study.

Research ethics review committees (ERCs) worldwide faced daunting challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. There was a need to balance rapid turnaround with rigorous evaluation of high-risk research protocols in the context of considerable uncertainty. This study explored the experiences and performance of ERCs during the pandemic. We conducted an anonymous, cross-sectional, global online survey of chairs (or their delegates) of ERCs who were involved in the review of COVID-19-related research protocols after March 2020. The survey ran from October 2022 to February 2023 and consisted of 50 items, with opportunities for descriptive responses to open-ended questions. Two hundred and three participants [130 from high-income countries (HICs) and 73 from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)] completed our survey. Respondents came from diverse entities and organizations from 48 countries (19 HICs and 29 LMICs) in all World Health Organization regions. Responses show little of the increased global funding for COVID-19 research was allotted to the operation of ERCs. Few ERCs had pre-existing internal policies to address operation during public health emergencies, but almost half used existing guidelines. Most ERCs modified existing procedures or designed and implemented new ones but had not evaluated the success of these changes. Participants overwhelmingly endorsed permanently implementing several of them. Few ERCs added new members but non-member experts were consulted; quorum was generally achieved. Collaboration among ERCs was infrequent, but reviews conducted by external ERCs were recognized and validated. Review volume increased during the pandemic, with COVID-19-related studies being prioritized. Most protocol reviews were reported as taking less than three weeks. One-third of respondents reported external pressure on their ERCs from different stakeholders to approve or reject specific COVID-19-related protocols. ERC members faced significant challenges to keep their committees functioning during the pandemic. Our findings can inform ERC approaches towards future public health emergencies. To our knowledge, this is the first international, COVID-19-related study of its kind.

We investigated participants’ ability to differentiate between random and organized two-dimensional tactile tiles with embossed dots and examined how this ability varies with size and participant age. Four experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of these variations on participants’ capacity to utilize touch in identifying which of two stimuli exhibited greater randomness. Participants were instructed to explore embossed tiles using both hands. The tiles had varying levels of randomness from organized to random sets. In Experiments 1, 2, and 4, the sets were of equal size, while in Experiment 3, they differed in size. Results revealed a significant difference between the random and organized sets, with random stimuli being more easily discernible. These findings suggest that touch can be utilized to discern random patterns on tactile maps or displays. However, older participants encountered difficulties making this distinction, indicating similarities between vision and touch in perceiving randomness.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the main complications of diabetes, and the management of the main control parameters explains only an 11% reduction in the risk of progressing to DR, leaving 89% to be explained by other factors or correlations between the usual factors that are currently unknown. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the similarities and differences between the possible risk factors for developing DR when comparing the world to Latin American populations. The search was performed first for Latin American (LA) populations and a second search for non-Latin American (Non-LA) populations. Using the PRISMA guidelines, five articles were found to be relevant for each of the groups. The patients who had elevated systolic blood pressure (SBP) developed DR more frequently than the patients without retinopathy (Z = 2.1, p = 0.03), an effect measured in the population at a global level (GL), behavior that becomes not significant when the LA and non-LA populations are grouped separately; relevant to this is that the diagnosis of hypertension (HBP) grouped globally and stratified does not present a risk factor for DR (Z = 0.79, p = 0.42). This indicates that SBP is a risk factor for the world population and that, by separating it into different regions, the omission could cause it not to be considered a possible risk factor. In conclusion, the relationship between the increase in DR associated with the risk factors present in different populations, the limited research conducted in Latin America, and the cultural, social, economic, and genetic differences makes for a complex condition, which reflects the necessity of researching in a more integrated way.

Seaweed is of importance to the environment due to properties such as its CO2 sequestration capability. On the other hand, plastic is a versatile material important to society. Unfortunately, the abundance of both plastics and seaweed represents a challenge due to the need of adequate waste management. At first, algae and plastics might not appear suitable for energy recovery; however, with co-gasification, the results are promising. This work presents a model to simulate the co-gasification of Chlorella vulgaris, Sargassum fluitans, and Sargassum natans with plastics. The effect of the gasification temperature (650–850 °C), equivalence ratio (0.25–0.45), and plastics/biomass ratio (0.0–1.0) on the produced gas’s lower heating value, tar concentration, and composition is assessed. Moreover, the environmental performance of using plastic to enhance the syngas produced from the co-gasification with sargassum is assessed using the life cycle assessment methodology. The results indicate that the lower heating value increases with the temperature and plastics/biomass ratio. Moreover, tar increases with the quantity of plastics, varying between 20 and 50 g/Nm3. Finally, adding plastics to algae during gasification reduces the variability in the syngas composition, simplifying the post-processing stage. With respect to environmental performance, gasification has an impact similar to those of pyrolysis and recycling, but the performance could improve with sufficient research and development.

Computers in mathematics education help foster abstract concepts and solve problems that are unsolvable by hand. Moreover, students whose major does not have a mathematical background often struggle with the topic and may require learning aid. Although extensive research has been conducted on the effect of computers and different software in learning, students’ perception on computers to solve mathematical problems has scarcely been studied. In this work, a group of undergraduate social sciences students were given computers to learn mathematics and solve contextual real-life problems, with the aim of facilitating learning and providing empowerment. After the courses, the students were asked their perception of computers and mathematics to obtain descriptive results on their perception. Responses indicated that with computers, students felt learning and solving mathematics problems was easier (85% of the answers), they felt more confident about their skills (69%), and could think of new ways to solve problems (54%). Moreover, a text analysis was conducted using software to assess open-ended questions, and the results indicated that most answers were positive in nature. Additionally, the students were given the chance to rate the mathematics course using computers, and the course received a rating of 9.5/10, indicating the methodology was liked.

IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic has amplified pre-existing challenges to health promotion and care across the world, and particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This qualitative study draws on data from a panel of immunisation experts and uses a novel framework of vaccine delivery domains to explore perspectives from those who live and work in these settings on the challenges to implementing COVID-19 vaccine programs in LMICs.MethodsWe conducted a thematic content analysis of 96 participant free text replies to questions from Round I of a three-round Delphi consensus study amongst global experts on COVID-19 vaccine implementation.ResultsParticipant responses highlighted challenges to vaccine program implementation including issues related to equity; governance, decision-making, and financing; regulatory structures, planning, and coordination; prioritisation, demand generation, and communication; vaccine, cold chain, logistics, and infrastructure; service delivery, human resources, and supplies; and surveillance, monitoring, and evaluation.ConclusionWe reflect on our findings in light of global efforts to address vaccine inequity and emphasise three key areas salient to improving vaccination efforts during novel infectious disease outbreaks: 1) Ensuring safe and sustainable service delivery in communities and at points of care; 2) Strengthening systems for end-to-end delivery of vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics, and essential supplies; 3) Transforming structural paradigms towards vaccine equity.

This research incorporates two passive technologies selected to offer thermal comfort conditions in a room exposed to extreme desert climatic conditions (Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico). On the one hand, a rectangular earth-air heat exchanger assisted with PCM (REAHE + PCM) is implemented. Its job is to supply cooled air to the room at temperatures below the comfort temperature. On the other hand, a room with PCM on its ceiling (room + PCM) is proposed, to reduce the thermal load towards the room and shift the thermal peak load, acting as thermal insulation. Hoping that the benefits of this combination of passive technologies provide the thermal comfort conditions required in a building in this region and thereby eliminate or reduce the consumption of electrical energy in conventional refrigeration systems. This article reports a detailed transient study of the thermal behavior of a passively cooled room. The effect of position, thickness, latent heat, and phase change temperature of the PCM in the room was investigated. Also, the different room configurations reported the time evolution of heat fluxes, temperatures, coefficient of performance (COP), and liquid fraction. A comparison between the proposed system and a room without PCM was made. Adding PCM to the roof can drop the peak heat flux in the ceiling by up to 33%. It was found that the most favorable system was with the PCM placed on the top of the room with a thickness between 1.5 cm and 2.0 cm. The best configuration kept an average room temperature of 0.6 K below the comfort temperature. The maximum temperature in the room only exceeded the comfort temperature by 0.33 K. The average COP varied between 264 and 288 for the room systems, while the average COP for the REAHE-PCM was 307. This combination of technologies is satisfactory for the climatic conditions studied.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be the leading cause of death worldwide. Over the past couple of years and with the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic, mortality from CVDs has been slightly overshadowed by those due to COVID-19, although it was during the peak of the pandemic. In the present study, patients with CVDs (CVDs; n = 41,883) were analyzed to determine which comorbidities had the largest impact on overall patient mortality due to their association with both diseases (n = 3,637). Obesity, hypertension, and diabetes worsen health in patients diagnosed positive for COVID-19. Hence, they were included in the overview of all patients with CVD. Our findings showed that 1,697 deaths were attributable to diabetes (p < 0.001) and 987 deaths to obesity (p < 0.001). Lastly, 2,499 deaths were attributable to hypertension (p < 0.001). Using logistic regression modeling, we found that diabetes (OR: 1.744, p < 0.001) and hypertension (OR: 2.179, p < 0.001) significantly affected the mortality rate of patients. Hence, having a CVD diagnosis, with hypertension and/or diabetes, seems to increase the likelihood of complications, leading to death in patients diagnosed positive for COVID-19.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the major microvascular complication of diabetes and causes vitreous traction and intraretinal hemorrhages leading to retinal detachment and total blindness. The evolution of diabetes is related to exacerbating inflammation caused by hyperglycemia and activation of inflammatory cells. Neutrophils are cells able to release structures of extracellular DNA and proteolytic enzymes called extracellular traps (NETs), which are associated with the persistence of inflammation in chronic pathologies. The purpose of the study was to determine the usefulness of neutrophil traps as indicators of DR progression in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). We performed a case–control study of seventy-four cases classified into five groups (non-proliferative DR, mild, moderate, severe, and proliferative) and fifteen healthy controls. We found correlations between NETs and a diagnostic time of T2DM (r = 0.42; p < 0.0001), fasting glucose (r = 0.29; p < 0.01), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (r = 0.31; p < 0.01), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (r = −0.29; p < 0.01), and plasma osmolarity (r = 0.25; p < 0.01). These results suggest that due to NETs being associated with clinical indicators, such as HbA1c and eGFR, and that NETs are also associated with DR, clinical indicators might be explained in part through an NET-mediated inflammation process.

Abstract Background Task shifting and sharing (TS/S) involves the redistribution of health tasks within workforces and communities. Conceptual frameworks lay out the key factors, constructs, and variables involved in a given phenomenon, as well as the relationships between those factors. Though TS/S is a leading strategy to address health worker shortages and improve access to services worldwide, a conceptual framework for this approach is lacking. Methods We used an online Delphi process to engage an international panel of scholars with experience in knowledge synthesis concerning TS/S and develop a conceptual framework for TS/S. We invited 55 prospective panelists to participate in a series of questionnaires exploring the purpose of TS/S and the characteristics of contexts amenable to TS/S programmes. Panelist responses were analysed and integrated through an iterative process to achieve consensus on the elements included in the conceptual framework. Results The panel achieved consensus concerning the included concepts after three Delphi rounds among 15 panelists. The COATS Framework (Concepts and Opportunities to Advance Task Shifting and Task Sharing) offers a refined definition of TS/S and a general purpose statement to guide TS/S programmes. COATS describes that opportunities for health system improvement arising from TS/S programmes depending on the implementation context, and enumerates eight necessary conditions and important considerations for implementing TS/S programmes. Conclusion The COATS Framework offers a conceptual model for TS/S programmes. The COATS Framework is comprehensive and adaptable, and can guide refinements in policy, programme development, evaluation, and research to improve TS/S globally.

In January 2021, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director–general of the WHO, warned that the world was ‘on the brink of a catastrophic moral failure [that] will be paid with lives and livelihoods in the world’s poorest countries’. We are now past the brink. Many high-income countries have vaccinated their populations (which, in some cases, includes third and even fourth doses) and are loosening public health and social measures, while low-income and middle-income countries are struggling to secure enough supply of vaccines to administer first doses. While injustices abound in the deployment and allocation of COVID-19 vaccines, therapies and diagnostics, an area that has hitherto received inadequate ethical scrutiny concerns the upstream structures and mechanisms that govern and facilitate the research and development (R&D) associated with these novel therapies, vaccines and diagnostics. Much can be learnt by looking to past experiences with the rapid deployment of R&D in the context of public health emergencies. Yet, much of the ‘learning’ from past epidemics and outbreaks has largely focused on technical or technological innovations and overlooked the essential role of important normative developments; namely, the importance of fostering multiple levels of trust, strong and fair governance, and broad research collaborations. In this paper, we argue that normative lessons pertaining to the conduct of R&D during the 2014–2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa provide important insights for how R&D ought to proceed to combat the current COVID-19 pandemic and future infectious disease threats.

BackgroundThe rapid implementation of global COVID-19 vaccination programs has surfaced many challenges and inequities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). However, there continues to be a lack of consensus on which challenges are global priorities for action, and how to best respond to them. This study uses consensus-based methods to identify and rank the most important challenges and solutions for implementation of COVID-19 vaccination programs in LMICs.MethodsWe conducted a three-round modified Delphi study with a global panel of vaccine delivery experts. In Round I, panelists identified broad topical challenges and solutions. Responses were collated and coded into distinct items. Through two further rounds of structured, iterative surveys panelists reviewed and ranked the identified items. Responses were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively to achieve consensus on the most important COVID-19 vaccine delivery challenges and solutions.ResultsOf the 426 invited panelists, 96 completed Round I, 56 completed Round II, and 39 completed Round III. Across all three rounds there was equal representation by gender, and panelists reported work experience in all World Bank regions and across a variety of content areas and organizations. Of the 64 initially identified items, the panel achieved consensus on three challenges and 10 solutions. Challenges fell under themes of structural factors and infrastructure and human and material resources, while solutions also included items within themes of communication, community engagement, and access and planning, processes, and operations.ConclusionCOVID-19 vaccine delivery is challenged by long-standing and structural inequities that disadvantage health service delivery in LMICs. These findings can, and should, be used by global health organizations to efficiently and optimally direct resources to respond to these key challenges and solutions.

The use of organoids has become increasingly popular recently due to their self-organizing abilities, which facilitate developmental and disease modeling. Various methods have been described to create embryoid bodies (EBs) generated from embryonic or pluripotent stem cells but with varying levels of differentiation success and producing organoids of variable size. Commercial ultra-low attachment (ULA) V-bottom well plates are frequently used to generate EBs. These plates are relatively expensive and not as widely available as standard concave well plates. Here, we describe a cost-effective and low labor-intensive method that creates homogeneous EBs at high yield in standard V- and U-bottom well plates by applying an anti-adherence solution to reduce surface attachment, followed by centrifugation to enhance cellular aggregation. We also explore the effect of different seeding densities, in the range of 1 to 11 ×103 cells per well, for the fabrication of neuroepithelial EBs. Our results show that the use of V-bottom well plates briefly treated with anti-adherent solution (for 5 min at room temperature) consistently yields functional neural EBs in the range of seeding densities from 5 to 11×103 cells per well. A brief post-seeding centrifugation step further enhances EB establishment. EBs fabricated using centrifugation exhibited lower variability in their final size than their non-centrifuged counterparts, and centrifugation also improved EB yield. The span of conditions for reliable EB production is narrower in U-bottom wells than in V-bottom wells (i.e., seeding densities between 7×103 and 11×103 and using a centrifugation step). We show that EBs generated by the protocols introduced here successfully developed into neural organoids and expressed the relevant markers associated with their lineages. We anticipate that the cost-effective and easily implemented protocols presented here will greatly facilitate the generation of EBs, thereby further democratizing the worldwide ability to conduct organoid-based research.

El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar las acciones orientadas a conocer la filosofía de responsabilidad social empresarial (RSE) por parte de los directivos para determinar el grado de voluntad que tienen para contribuir al desarrollo sostenible. El estudio es descriptivo y transversal, contempló una población de 100 empresas con una muestra representativa de 80 micro y pequeñas empresas (mypes). La recopilación de la información se hizo a través de un instrumento que contempla 16 ítems en una escala tipo Likert. De manera general, los resultados mostraron que las empresas encuestadas, en su mayoría, no cuentan con conocimientos formales de la filosofía de RSE, lo que permite identificar las áreas de oportunidad en este campo y colaborar en su desarrollo responsable en favor de la sustentabilidad. Abstract The objective of this research is the analysis of actions oriented towards the understanding of social corporate responsibility (CSR) by managers to determine the degree of willingness they have in contributing to sustainable development. This is a descriptive and cross-section research which contemplated a population of 100 enterprises consisting of a representative sample of 80 micro and small enterprises (MSE). The information gathered was performed through an instrument which contemplated 16 items on a Likert scale. In general, results show that the majority of enterprises surveyed lack formal knowledge of CRS philosophy, allowing the identification of areas of opportunities in this field and collaborating to their responsible development in favor of sustainability.
