Collective light-matter interactions have been used to control chemistry and energy transfer, yet accessible approaches that combine ab initio methodology with large many-body quantum optical systems are missing due to the fast increase in computational cost for explicit simulations. We introduce an accessible ab initio quantum embedding concept for many-body quantum optical systems that allows to treat the collective coupling of molecular many-body systems effectively in the spirit of macroscopic QED while keeping the rigor of ab initio quantum chemistry for the molecular structure. Our approach fully includes the quantum fluctuations of the polaritonic field and yet remains much simpler and more intuitive than complex embedding approaches such as dynamical mean-field theory. We illustrate the underlying assumptions by comparison to the Tavis--Cummings model. The intuitive application of the quantized embedding approach and its transparent limitations offer a practical framework for the field of ab initio polaritonic chemistry to describe collective effects in realistic molecular ensembles.

We investigate the properties of the photon Bose-Einstein condensate in the limit of small mode spacing. Alongside the well-known threshold of the phase transition at large mode spacings, we find an emergence of a second threshold for sufficiently small mode spacings, defining the crossover to a fully condensed state. Furthermore, we present our findings for the mode occupations in the precondensate or supercooling region towards the continuum limit., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Our study delves into the modifications observed in Vavilov-\v{C}erenkov radiation when its generating charged particle moves parallel to an interface formed by two generic magnetoelectric media, focusing on topological insulators. We compute the electromagnetic field through the Green's function. Applying the far-field approximation and the steepest descent method, we derive analytical expressions for the electric field, revealing contributions from spherical and lateral waves with topological origins. Subsequently, we analyze the angular distribution of the radiation, particularly focusing on parallel motions in close proximity to the interface. Our findings indicate that the radiation along the Vavilov-\v{C}erenkov cone is inhomogeneous and asymmetric. We analyze the radiated energy at both sides of the interface. Finally, we discuss the particle's retarding force, which is notably enhanced in the ultrarelativistic regime. Source radiation (radiation reaction) and vacuum-field fluctuations can be seen as two inseparable contributions to processes such as spontaneous emission, the Lamb shift, or the Casimir force. Here, we propose how they can be individually probed and their space-time structure revealed in electro-optic sampling experiments. This allows to experimentally study causality at the single photon level and to reveal space- and time-like correlations in the quantum vacuum. We study the impact of an environment on the electromagnetic responses of a molecule in the presence of a dielectric medium. By applying the dipole-dipole coupling between the molecule's and the environment's degrees of freedom, we can reduce the complex system into its components and predict excitation lifetimes of single and few molecules attached to a dielectric surface by knowing the entire quantum-mechanical properties of the molecules, such as transition energies and dipole moments. The derived theory allows for the description of superradiance between two molecules depending on the geometric arrangement between both concerning their separation and orientation with respect to each other. We analyse the possibility of superradiance between two molecules bound to a dielectric sphere and determine a change of the relevant length scale where the usually considered wavelength in free space is replaced with the binding distance, drastically reducing the length scales at which collective effects can take place.

Resonance energy transfer between chiral molecules can be used to discriminate between different enantiomers. The transfer rate between chiral molecules consists of a non-discriminatory and discriminatory parts. We derive these two rate contributions in the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. We show that their ratio is usually larger in the retarded regime or far-zone of large separation distances and that the degree of discrimination can be modified when considering a surrounding medium. We highlight the importance of local field effects onto the degree of discrimination and predict for general identical chiral molecules the optimum dielectric medium for discrimination. We apply our results on to 3-methylcyclopentanone and show that exotic media can even invert the discriminatory effect.

We implement a shape optimization algorithm for body-assisted light-matter interactions described by the formalism of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. The approach uses the level-set method to represent and incrementally evolve dielectric environments. Utilizing finite-difference time-domain techniques we demonstrate the ability of the algorithm by optimizing the rate of resonance energy transfer in two dimensions. The resulting geometries enhance the transfer rate by several orders of magnitude.

We tailor the quantum statistics of a bosonic field to deterministically drive a quantum system into a target state. Experimentally accessible states of the field achieve good control of multi-level or -qubit systems, notably also at coupling strengths beyond the rotating-wave approximation. This extends optimal control theory to the realm of fully quantized, strongly coupled control and target degrees of freedom.

The photonic Bose$-$Einstein condensate is a recently observed collective ground state of a coupled light-matter system. We describe this quantum state based on macroscopic quantum electrodynamics in dispersing and absorbing environments. To model the coupled photon$-$dye dynamics, we derive a master equation using a nested open quantum systems approach yielding all parameters essential to describe the condensation process. This approach allows us to describe photon condensates of arbitrary shapes because all geometry-dependent decay constants can be expressed in terms of the Green's tensor. In particular, we obtain the cavity mode absorption and emission rates of the dye molecules., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Under both engineering and natural conditions on Earth and in the Universe, some gas hydrates are found to be stabilised outside their window of thermodynamic stability by the formation of an ice layer-a phenomenon termed self-preservation. Low occupancy surface regions on type I CO2 clathrate structures together with the self-preserving ice layer lead to an effective buoyancy for these structures which restricts the size range of particles that float in the ocean on Enceladus, Pluto and similar oceanic worlds. Our goal here is to investigate the implications of Lifshitz forces and low occupancy surface regions on clathrate structures for their self-preservation through ice layer formation, presenting a plausible model based on multilayer interactions through dispersion forces. We predict that the growth of an ice layer between 0.01 and 0.2 $\mu$m thick on CO2 clathrate surfaces depends on the presence of surface regions in the gas hydrates with low occupancy. The effective particle density is estimated delimiting a range of particles that would be buoyant in different oceans. Over geological time, deposition of floating CO2 hydrates could result in the accumulation of kilometre-thick hydrate layers above liquid water reservoirs, and below the water ice crusts of their respective ocean worlds. On Enceladus, destabilisation of near-surface hydrate deposits could lead to increased gas pressures that both drive plumes and entrain stabilised hydrates to be redeposited on the surface of Enceladus or ejected into the E-ring of Saturn. On ocean worlds such as Enceladus and particularly Pluto, the accumulation of thick CO2 hydrate deposits could insulate its ocean against freezing. In preventing the freezing of liquid water reservoirs in ocean worlds, the presence of CO2 hydrate layers could enhance the habitability of ocean worlds in our solar systems and on the exoplanets and exomoons beyond.

An excited two-atom system can decay via different competing relaxation processes. If the excess energy is sufficiently high the system may not only relax via spontaneous emission but can also undergo interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) or even Auger decay. We provide analytical expressions for the rates by including them into the same quantum optical framework on the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. By comparing the rates in free space we derive the atomic properties determining which decay channel dominates the relaxation. We show that by modifying the excitation propagation of the respective process via macroscopic bodies, in the spirit of the Purcell effect, one can control the ratio between the two dominating decay rates. We can relate the magnitude of the effect to characteristic length scales of each process, analyse the impact of a simple close-by surface onto a general two-atom system in detail and discuss the effect of a cavity onto the decay rates. We finally apply our theory to the example of a doubly excited HeNe-dimer.

We study how transition radiation is modified by the presence of a generic magnetoelectric medium with a special focus on topological insulators. To this end, we use the Green's function for the electromagnetic field in presence of a plane interface between two topological insulators with different topological parameters, permittivities and permeabilities. We employ the far-field approximation together with the steepest descent method to obtain approximate analytical expressions for the electromagnetic field. Through this method we find that the electric field is a superposition of spherical waves and lateral waves. Contributions of both kind can be attributed to a purely topological origin. After computing the angular distribution of the radiation, we find that in a region far from the interface the main contribution to the radiation comes from the spherical waves. We present typical radiation patterns for the topological insulator TlBiSe$_2$ and the magnetoelectric TbPO$_4$. In the ultra-relativistic case, the additional contributions from the magnetoelectric coupling appreciably enhance the global maximum of the angular distribution. We also present an analytic expression for the frequency distribution of the radiation for this case. The microscopic processes underlying electro-optic sampling of quantum-vacuum fluctuations are discussed, leading to the interpretation of these experiments in terms of an exchange of virtual photons. With this in mind it is shown how one can directly study the Purcell effect, i.e. the changes induced by cavities upon the quantum vacuum, in the frequency and time domains. This forges a link between electro-optic sampling of the quantum vacuum and geometry-induced vacuum effects.

Casimir-Polder interactions cause energy and momentum exchange between microscopic and macroscopic bodies, a process mediated by quantum fluctuations in the coupled matter-electromagnetic field system. The dynamics of such effects are yet to be experimentally investigated due to the dominance of static effects at currently attainable atomic velocities. However, Y. Guo and Z. Jacob [\textit{Opt. Express}, 22:26193-26202, 2014] have proposed a non-static two-plate set-up where quantum fluctuation mediated effects have a strong velocity-dependent resonance, leading to a giant friction force on the plates. Here a more easily realisable set-up, a moving atom between two stationary plates, is analysed within a QED framework to establish the spectroscopic Casimir-Polder effects on the atom, and their velocity dependence. While no large velocity-dependent enhancement is found, expressions for the plate-induced spectroscopic effects on the atom were found, and further shown to be equivalent to the Doppler-shifted static result within certain velocity constraints. A numerical analysis investigates the behaviour of this system for the well studied case of the $6D_{3/2}\rightarrow 7P_{1/2}$ transition in $^{133}$Cs interacting with sapphire plates., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The effect of an implicit medium on dispersive interactions of particle pairs is discussed and simple expressions for the correction relative to vacuum are derived. We show that a single point Gauss quadrature leads to the intuitive result that the vacuum van der Waals $C_6$ coefficient is screened by the permittivity squared of the environment evaluated near to the resonance frequencies of the interacting particles. This approximation should be particularly relevant if the medium is transparent at these frequencies. In the manuscript, we provide simple models and sets of parameters for commonly used solvents, atoms and small molecules.

A quantum sensing protocol is proposed for demonstrating the motion-induced chirality of circularly polarised Rydberg atoms. To this end, a cloud of Rydberg atoms is dressed by a bichromatic light field. This allows to exploit the long-lived ground states for implementing a Ramsey interferometer in conjunction with a spin echo pulse sequence for refocussing achiral interactions. Optimal parameters for the dressing lasers are identified. Combining a circularly polarised dipole transition in the Rydberg atom with atomic centre-of-mass motion, the system becomes chiral. The resulting discriminatory chiral energy shifts induced by a chiral mirror are estimated using a macroscopic quantum electrodynamics approach.

We present a critical overview comparing theoretical predictions and measurements of Van der Waals dispersion forces in media on the basis of the respective Hamaker constants. To quantify the agreement, we complement the reported experimental errors with those for the theoretical predictions, which are due to uncertainties in the underlying spectroscopic data. Our main finding is that the theoretical errors are often larger than their experimental counterparts. Within these uncertainties, the comparison confirms the standard Lifshitz theory based on the Abraham electromagnetic stress tensor against the recently suggested alternative account on the basis of the Maxwell stress tensor.

The processing and material properties of commercial organic semiconductors, for e.g. fullerenes is largely controlled by their precise arrangements, specially intermolecular symmetries, distances and orientations, more specifically, molecular polarisabilities. These supramolecular parameters heavily influence their electronic structure, thereby determining molecular photophysics and therefore dictating their usability as n-type semiconductors. In this article we evaluate van der Waals potentials of a fullerene dimer model system using two approaches: a) Density Functional Theory and, b) Macroscopic Quantum Electrodynamics, which is particularly suited for describing long-range van der Waals interactions. Essentially, we determine and explain the model symmetry, distance and rotational dependencies on binding energies and spectral changes. The resultant spectral tuning is compared using both methods showing correspondence within the constraints placed by the different model assumptions. We envision that the application of macroscopic methods and structure/property relationships laid forward in this article will find use in fundamental supramolecular electronics.

In the study of dispersion forces, nonretarded, retarded and thermal asymptotes with their distinct scaling laws are regarded as cornerstone results governing interactions at different separations. Here, we show that when particles interact in a medium, the influence of retardation is qualitatively different, making it necessary to consider the non-monotonous potential in full. We discuss different regimes for several cases and find an anomalous behaviour of the retarded asymptote. It can change sign, and lead to a trapping potential.

The Langevin noise approach for quantization of macroscopic electromagnetics for three-dimensional, inhomogeneous environments is compared with normal mode quantization. Recent works on the applicability of the method are discussed, and several examples are provided showing that for closed systems the Langevin noise approach reduces to the usual cavity mode expansion method when loss is eliminated.

Collective emission behavior is usually described by the decay dynamics of the completely symmetric Dicke states. To study a more realistic scenario, we investigate alternative initial states inducing a more complex time evolution. Superposition states of the fully inverted Dicke state and the Dicke ground state with unequal mutual weights are studied as examples as well as superradiance stemming from atoms in clusters separated by more than one wavelength. The Monte Carlo wave function method serves as framework to study the dynamics of quantum states, which is determined by quantum jumps on the one hand and continuous evolution dynamics on the other hand. The description of an open quantum system's decay almost always requires several approximations as to remain tractable. Here, we first revisit the meaning, domain and seeming contradictions of a few of the most widely used of such approximations: semi-group Markovianity, linear response theory, Wigner--Weisskopf and rotating-wave approximation. Secondly, we derive an effective time-dependent decay theory and corresponding generalized quantum regression relations for an open quantum system linearly coupled to an environment. This theory covers all timescales, and subsumes the Markovian and linear-response results as limiting cases. Finally, we apply our theory to the phenomenon of quantum friction.

Closely-spaced quantum emitters coherently sharing excitation can release their energy faster than suggested by a simple sum over their individual emission rates - a phenomenon known as superradiance. Here, we show that the assumption of closely-spaced emitters can be relaxed in the context of resonant energy transfer, instead finding that certain symmetrical arrangements of donors are just as effective. We derive exact expressions for the superradiant fidelity in such situations, finding some surprising results such as complete suppression of the rate for a single acceptor within a homogeneous spherically symmetric distribution of coherent donors.

The van der Waals dispersion interaction between two chiral molecules in the presence of arbirary magnetoelectric media is derived using perturbation theory. To be general, the molecular polarisabilities are assumed to be of electric, paramagnetic and diamagnetic natures and the material environment is considered to possess a chiral electromagnetic response. The derived formulas of electric-chiral, paramagnetic-chiral, diamagnetic-chiral and chiral-chiral interaction potentials when added to the previously obtained contributions in literature, form a complete set of dispersion interaction formulas. We present them in a unified form making use of electric--magnetic duality. As an application, the case of two anisotropic molecules in free space is considered where we drive the retarded and non-retarded limits with respect to intermolecular distance.

Inverse design represents a paradigm shift in the development of nanophotonic devices, where optimal geometries and materials are discovered by an algorithm rather than symmetry considerations or intuition. Here we present a very general formulation of inverse design that is applicable to atomic interactions in external environments, and derive from this some explicit formulae for optimisation of spontaneous decay rates, Casimir-Polder forces and resonant energy transfer. Using the Purcell factor of latter as an example, we use finite-difference time-domain techniques to demonstrate the ability of inverse design algorithms to go far beyond what can be achieved by intuition-based approaches, opening up a new route to their technological exploitation.

One of the most important tools in modern science is the analysis of electromagnetic properties via spectroscopy. The various types of spectroscopy can be classified by the underlying type of interactions between energy and material. In this paper we demonstrate a new class of spectroscopy based on Casimir interactions between a solid investigated object and a reference surface embedded in an environmental liquid medium. Our main example is based on the measurement of Hamaker constants upon changing the concentration of an intervening two-component liquid, where we demonstrate a possible reconstruction algorithm to estimate the frequency-dependent dielectric function of the investigated particle.

Dispersion forces such as van der Waals forces between two microscopic particles, the Casimir--Polder forces between a particle and a macroscopic object or the Casimir force between two dielectric objects are well studied in vacuum. However, in realistic situations the interacting objects are often embedded in an environmental medium. Such a solvent influences the induced dipole interaction. With the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, these interactions are mediated via an exchange of virtual photons. Via this method the impact of a homogeneous solvent medium can be expressed as local-field corrections leading to excess polarisabilities which have previously been derived for hard boundary conditions. In order to develop a more realistic description, we investigate on a one-dimensional analog system illustrating the influence of a continuous dielectric profile.

Recent progress in electro-optic sampling has allowed direct access to the fluctuations of the electromagnetic ground state. Here, we present a theoretical formalism that allows for an in-depth characterisation and interpretation of such quantum-vacuum detection experiments by relating their output statistics to the quantum statistics of the electromagnetic vacuum probed. In particular, we include the effects of absorption, dispersion and reflections from general environments. Our results agree with available experimental data while leading to significant corrections to previous theoretical predictions and generalises them to new parameter regimes. Our formalism opens the door for a detailed experimental analysis of the different characteristics of the polaritonic ground state, e.g. we show that transverse (free-field) as well as longitudinal (matter or near-field) fluctuations can be accessed individually by tuning the experimental parameters.

Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) represent one of the very few manifestations of purely quantum effects on a macroscopic level. The vast majority of BECs achieved in the lab to date consist of bosonic atoms, which macroscopically populate the ground state once a threshold temperature has been reached. Recently, a new type of condensate was observed - the photon BEC, where light in a dye-filled cavity thermalises with dye molecules under the influence of an external driving laser, condensing to the lowest-energy mode. However, the precise relationship between the photon BEC and symmetry-breaking phenomena has not yet been investigated. Here we consider medium-induced symmetry breaking in a photon BEC and show that it can be used as a quantum sensor. The introduction of polarisable objects such as chiral molecules lifts the degeneracy between cavity modes of different polarisations. Even a tiny imbalance is imprinted on the condensate polarisation in a 'winner takes it all' effect. When used as a sensor for enantiomeric excess, the predicted sensitivity exceeds that of contemporary methods based on circular dichroism. Our results introduce a new symmetry-breaking mechanism that is independent of the external pump, and demonstrate that the photon BEC can be used for practical purposes.

Interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) is a mechanism which allows microscopic objects to rapidly exchange energy. When the two objects are distant, the energy transfer between the donor and acceptor species takes place via the exchange of a virtual photon. On the contrary, recent ab initio calculations have revealed that the presence of a third passive species can significantly enhance the ICD rate at short distances due to the effects of electronic wave function overlap and charge transfer states [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 083403 (2017)]. Here, we develop a virtual photon description of three-body ICD, showing that a mediator atom can have a significant influence at much larger distances. In this regime, this impact is due to the scattering of virtual photons off the mediator, allowing for simple analytical results and being manifest in a distinct geometry-dependence which includes interference effects. As a striking example, we show that in the retarded regime ICD can be substantially enhanced or suppressed depending on the position of the ICD-inactive object, even if the latter is far from both donor and acceptor species.

We propose a method to separate enantiomers using parity violation in the Casimir-Polder potential between chiral mirrors and chiral molecules. The proposed setup involves a molecular beam composed of chiral molecules passing through a planar cavity consisting of two chiral mirrors. Enantiomers of opposite handedness are deflected differently due to a chiral dependence of the Casimir-Polder potential resulting in the separation of the enantiomers. Atom-surface forces using excited states have a host of compelling applications, including repulsive and lateral forces. However, such states can be fragile and difficult to prepare. Here we report an explicit normal-mode based calculation of the Casimir-Polder potential between a ground-state atom and a non-dispersive surface in the presence of an external quantised field. The potential we derive shares some features with that of excited-state Casimir-Polder forces even though we consider a ground-state atom. Our work provides a physically transparent and intuitive picture of driven Casimir-Polder potentials, as well as expanding on previous investigations by providing analytic results that fully include retardation, as well as being applicable for any choice of mutual alignment of the atom's dipole moment, the external field, and the surface normal.

The emission by an initially completely inverted atomic ensemble in the long-wavelength regime is simultaneously enhanced by both collective effects (Dicke effect) and dielectric environments (Purcell effect), thus giving rise to a combined Purcell-Dicke effect. We study this effect by treating the ensemble of N atoms as a single effective N+1-level 'Dicke atom' which couples to the environment-assisted quantum electrodynamic field. We find that an environment can indeed alter the superradiant emission dynamics, as exemplified using a perfectly conducting plate. As the emission acquires an additional anisotropy in the presence of the plate, we find an associated resonant Casimir-Polder potential for the atom that is collectively enhanced and that exhibits a superradiant burst in its dynamics. We demonstrate under which conditions a violation of the charge-parity (CP) symmetry in molecules will manifest itself in the Casimir-Polder interaction of these with a magnetodielectric surface. Charge-parity violation induces a specific electric-magnetic cross-polarisability in a molecule that is not chiral, but time-reversal (T) symmetry violating. As we show, a detection of such an effect via the Casimir-Polder potential requires a material medium that is also sensitive to time-reversal, i.e., it must exhibit a non-reciprocal electromagnetic response. As simple examples of such media we consider a perfectly reflecting non-reciprocal mirror that is a special case of a perfect electromagnetic conductor as well as a Chern-Simons medium. In addition, we show that Chern-Simons and related media can induce unusual atom-surface interactions for anisotropic molecules with and without a chiral response., Comment: 5 pages

We investigate theoretically the Casimir-Polder potential of an atom which is driven by a laser field close to a surface. This problem is addressed in the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics using the Green's tensor formalism and we distinguish between two different approaches, a perturbative ansatz and a method based on Bloch equations. We apply our results to a concrete example, namely an atom close to a perfectly conducting mirror, and create a scenario where the tunable Casimir-Polder potential becomes similar to the respective potential of an undriven atom due to fluctuating field modes. Whereas the perturbative approach is restricted to large detunings, the ansatz based on Bloch equations is exact and yields an expression for the potential which does not exceed 1/2 of the undriven Casimir-Polder potential., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Van der Waals forces between atoms and molecules are universally assumed to act along the line separating them. Inspired by recent works on effects which can propel atoms parallel to a macroscopic surface via the Casimir--Polder force, we predict a lateral van der Waals force between two atoms, one of which is in an excited state with non-zero angular momentum and the other is isotropic and in its ground state. The resulting force acts in the same way as a planetary gear, in contrast to the rack-and-pinion motion predicted in works on the lateral Casimir--Polder force in the analogous case, for which the force predicted here is the microscopic origin. We illustrate the effect by predicting the trajectories of an excited caesium in the vicinity of ground-state rubidium, finding behaviour qualitatively different to that if lateral forces are ignored.

We examine the lateral Casimir-Polder force acting on a circular rotating emitter near a dielectric plane surface. As the circular motion breaks time-reversal symmetry, the spontaneous emission in a direction parallel to the surface is in general anisotropic. We show that a lateral force arises which can be interpreted as a recoil force because of this asymmetric emission. The force is an oscillating function of the distance between the emitter and the surface, and the lossy character of the dielectric strongly influences the results in the near-field regime. The force exhibits also a population-induced dynamics, decaying exponentially with respect to time on timescales of the inverse of the spontaneous decay rate. We propose that this effect could be detected measuring the velocity acquired by the emitter, following different cycles of excitation and thermalisation. An atom irradiated by an off-resonant laser field near a surface is expected to experience the sum of two fundamental potentials, the optical potential of the laser field and the Casimir--Polder potential of the surface. Here, we report a new non-additive potential, namely the laser-induced Casimir--Polder potential, which arises from a correlated coupling of the atom with both the laser and the quantum vacuum. We apply this result to an experimentally realizable scenario of an atomic mirror with an evanescent laser beam leaking out of a surface. We address the long-standing controversy regarding the correct description of the electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor in media and its consequences for the Casimir force. The latter being due to the zero-point momentum of the electromagnetic field, competing approaches based on the Abraham or Maxwell stress tensor lead to different predictions. We consider the test scenario of two colloidal spherical particles submerged in a dielectric medium and use three criteria to distinguish the two approaches: we show that the Abraham stress tensor, and not the Maxwell stress tensor, leads to a Casimir force that is form-equivalent to Casimir-Polder and van der Waals forces, obeys duality as a fundamental symmetry and is consistent with microscopic many-body calculations., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We discuss the Casimir effect for boundary conditions involving perfect electromagnetic conductors (PEMCs). Based on the corresponding reciprocal Green's tensor we construct the Green's tensor for two perfectly reflecting plates with magnetoelectric coupling (non-reciprocal media) within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. We calculate the Casimir force between two PEMC plates in terms of the PEMC parameter M and the duality transformation angle ${\theta}$ resulting in a universal analytic expression that connects the attractive Casimir force with the repulsive Boyer force. We relate the results to the duality symmetry of electromagnetism.

We consider the resonant van der Waals interaction between two correlated identical two-level atoms (at least one of which being excited) within the framework of macroscopic cavity quantum electrodynamics in linear, dispersing and absorbing media. The interaction of both atoms with the body-assisted electromagnetic field of the cavity is assumed to be strong. Our time-independent evaluation is based on an extended Jaynes-Cummings model. For a system prepared in a superposition of its dressed states, we derive the general form of the van der Waals forces, using a Lorentzian single mode approximation. We demonstrate the applicability of this approach by considering the case of a planar cavity and showing the position-dependence of Rabi oscillations. We also show that in the limiting case of weak coupling, our results reproduce the perturbative ones, for the case where the field is initially in vacuum state while the atomic state is in a superposition of two correlated states sharing one excitation.

Based on the theory of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we generalize the expression of the Casimir force for nonreciprocal media. The essential ingredient of this result is the Green's tensor between two nonreciprocal semi-infinite slabs including a reflexion matrix with four coefficients that mixes optical polarizations. This Green's tensor does not obey Lorentz's reciprocity and thus violates time-reversal symmetry. The general result for the Casimir force is analyzed in the retarded and nonretarded limits, concentrating on the influences arising from reflections with or without change of polarization. In a second step we apply our general result to a photonic topological insulator whose nonreciprocity stems from an anisotropic permittivity tensor, namely InSb. We show that there is a regime for the distance between the slabs where the magnitude of the Casimir force is tunable by an external magnetic field. Furthermore the strength of this tuning depends on the orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the slab surfaces., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

We predict a discriminatory interaction between a chiral molecule and an achiral molecule which is mediated by a chiral body. To achieve this, we generalize the van der Waals interaction potential between two ground-state molecules with electric, magnetic and chiral response to non-trivial environments. The force is evaluated using second-order perturbation theory with an effective Hamiltonian. Chiral media enhance or reduce the free interaction via many-body interactions, making it possible to measure the chiral contributions to the van der Waals force with current technology. The van der Waals interaction is discriminatory with respect to enantiomers of different handedness and could be used to separate enantiomers. We also suggest a specific geometric configuration where the electric contribution to the van der Waals interaction is zero, making the chiral component the dominant effect., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We present a unified framework for studying Coulomb interactions in arbitrary environments using macroscopic quantum electrodynamics on the basis of the electromagnetic Green's function. Our theory can be used to derive the Coulomb potential of a single charged particle as well as that between two charges in the presence of media, bodies and interfaces of arbitrary shapes. To demonstrate this, we reproduce the well-known screened Coulomb force, account for local-field effects and consider new cases such as a dielectric cavity and a conducting plate with a hole.

The self-energy of an electron confined between parallel surfaces with arbitrary dielectric properties is calculated. The mechanism for this effect is the surface-induced modification of the fluctuating quantised vacuum field to which the electron is coupled, thereby endowing it with a surface-dependent self-energy in broad analogy to the Casimir-Polder effect for an atom. We derive a general formula for this self-energy shift and find that its sign is different for two commonly-used models of surface response, namely the plasma model and the Drude model. We propose an experiment which could detect this difference in sign, shedding light on continuing uncertainty about the correct description of the interaction of low-frequency vacuum photons with media., Comment: Comments welcome

Diffraction of matter-waves is an important demonstration of the fact that objects in nature possess a mixture of particle-like and wave-like properties. Unlike in the case of light diffraction, matter-waves are subject to a vacuum-mediated interaction with diffraction obstacles. Here we present a detailed account of this effect through the calculation of the attractive Casimir-Polder potential between a dielectric sphere and an atomic beam. Furthermore, we use our calculated potential to make predictions about the diffraction patterns to be observed in an ongoing experiment where a beam of indium atoms is diffracted around a silicon dioxide sphere. The result is an amplification of the on-axis bright feature which is the matter-wave analogue of the well-known `Poisson spot' from optics. Our treatment confirms that the diffraction patterns resulting from our complete account of the sphere Casimir-Polder potential are indistinguishable from those found via a large-sphere non-retarded approximation in the discussed experiments, establishing the latter as an adequate model., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

We consider the dynamical atom-surface Casimir-Polder force in the non-equilibrium configuration of an atom near a perfectly conducting wall, initially prepared in an excited state with the field in its vacuum state. We evaluate the time-dependent Casimir-Polder force on the atom, and find that it shows an oscillatory behavior from attractive to repulsive both in time and in space. We also investigate the asymptotic behavior in time of the dynamical force and of related local field quantities, showing that the static value of the force, as obtained by a time-independent approach, is recovered for times much larger than the timescale of the atomic self-dressing, but smaller than the atomic decay time. We then discuss the evolution of global quantities such as atomic and field energies, and their asymptotic behavior. We also compare our results for the dynamical force on the excited atom with analogous results recently obtained for an initially bare ground-state atom. We show that new relevant features are obtained in the case of an initially excited atom, for example much larger values of the dynamical force with respect to the static one, allowing for an easier way to single-out and observe the dynamical Casimir-Polder effect., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We calculate the Casimir-Polder frequency shift and decay rate for an atom in front of a nonreciprocal medium by using macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. The results are a generalization of the respective quantities for matter with broken time-reversal symmetry which does not fulfill the Lorentz reciprocity principle. As examples, we contrast the decay rates, the resonant and nonresonant frequency shifts of a perfectly conducting (reciprocal) mirror to those of a perfectly reflecting nonreciprocal mirror. We find different power laws for the distance dependence of all quantities in the retarded and nonretarded limits. As an example of a more realistic nonreciprocal medium, we investigate a topological insulator subject to a time-symmetry breaking perturbation., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures
