Abstract

Media coverage of the 1992 US presidential campaign was analyzed in terms of emphasis and tone and how much time and space it allocated for self-promotion of the candidates. Newspapers, network TV news, local TV news, TV interviews and candidate advertising were compared on candidate voice, substance and cynicism. Results, some of them surprising, show that TV interview offered the optimum combination of opportunity for candidate voice, substance and lack of cynicism.
