Abstract

In this study, we evaluated three conceptually similar ozone gas deposition models. These dry deposition models are frequently used with chemical transport models for calculations over large spatial domains. However, large scale applications of surface-atmosphere exchange of reactive gases require modeling results as accurate as possible to avoid nonlinear accumulation of errors in the spatially representative results. In this paper, model evaluation and comparison against measured data over a coniferous forest at Niwot Ridge AmeriFlux site (Colorado, USA) is carried out. At this site, no previous model calibration took place for any of the models, therefore, we can test and compare their performances under similar conditions as they would perform in a spatial application. Our results show systematic model errors in all the three cases, model performance varies with time of the day, and the errors show a pronounced seasonal pattern as well. The introduction of soil moisture content stress in the model improved model performance regarding the magnitude of fluxes, but the correlation between measured and modeled ozone deposition values remains low. Our results suggest that ozone dry deposition model results should be interpreted carefully in large scale applications, where the accuracy can vary with land cover sometimes are biased.

Abstract

Eulerian and Lagrangian statistics in the atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL) are studied by means of large eddy simulation (LES). Spectra analysis is performed in both the Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks, autocorrelations are calculated, and the integral length and time scales are derived. Eulerian statistics are calculated by means of spatial and temporal analysis in order to derive characteristic length and time scales. Taylor's hypothesis of frozen turbulence is investigated, and it is found to be satisfied in fine simulated flow. Lagrangian statistics are derived by tracking the trajectories of numerous particles released at different heights in the turbulent flow. The relationship betwccn Lagrangian properties (autocorrelation functions) and dispersion characteristics (particles' displacement) is studied through Taylor's diffusion relationship, with special emphasis on the difference between horizontal and vertical motion. Results show that for the horizontal motion, Taylor's relationship is satisfied. The vertical motion, however, is influenced by the inhomogeneity of the flow and limited by the ground and the capping inversion at the top of the CBL. The Lagrangian autocorrelation function, therefore, does not have an exponential shape, and consequently, the integral time scale is zero. If distinction is made between free and bounded motion, a better agreement between Taylor's relationship and the particles' vertical displacement is found. Relationships between Eulerian and Lagrangian frameworks are analyzed by calculating the ratio [beta] between Lagrangian and Eulerian time scales. Results show that the integral time scales are mainly constant with height for z/[z.sub.i] < 0.7. In the upper part of the CBL, the capping inversion transforms vertical motion into horizontal motion. As a result, the horizontal time scale increases with height, whereas the vertical one is reduced. Current parameterizations for the ratio between the Eulerian and Lagrangian time scales have been tested against the LES results showing satisfactory agreement at heights z/[z.sub.i] < 0.7.

Atmosphärische Aerosolpartikel können durch ein breites Spektrum an natürlichen oder anthropogenen Emissionen mit unterschiedlich hohen Konzentrationen in die Atmosphäre freigesetzt werden. Sie beeinflussen den Strahlungshaushalt und damit auch das Klima der Erde und können außerdem durch ihre Präsenz in der Atmosphäre Wechselwirkungen mit Mensch und Natur, also dem gesamten Ökosystem haben. Seit dem Jahr 2010 gelten in der EU Grenzwerte für die PM10 Tagesmittelkonzentration, die jedoch bereits wenige Monate nach Beginn der Gültigkeit an vielen Messstationen überschritten wurden. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war eine objektive Bewertung der Herkunft und des Zustandes der an einem Messort ankommenden Luftmasse und der damit verbundenen Schadstoffniveaus. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wurden PM10 Messdaten aus fünf Jahren in und um Leipzig sowie analog in fünf verschiedenen Regionen deutschlandweit in Bezug auf PM10 Grenzwertüberschreitungen untersucht. Es wurden Rückwärtstrajektorien für eine Clusteranalyse verwendet, mit der spezifische Wetterlagen unterschieden wurden und diesen dann die einzelnen Messtage mit den zugehörigen Schadstoffkonzentrationen zugeordnet wurden. Hierbei wurde deutlich, dass durch entsprechende meteorologische Bedingungen sowohl lokal als auch regional emittierte Schadstoffe in Bodennähe akkumulieren oder aber auch räumlich verteilt werden können. Außerdem wurde in dieser Arbeit eine Modellvalidierung vorgestellt. Es wurde das Modellsystem COSMO-MUSCAT/ext-M7 verwendet, dessen Ergebnisse mit Beobachtungsdaten verglichen wurden. Als erstes wurde die Beschreibung der meteorologischen Bedingungen, dann die räumliche Verteilung von PM10, die chemische Partikelzusammensetzung sowie physikalische Aerosolparameter wie Partikelanzahl, -volumen und -durchmesser verglichen. Abstract

Biodiversity is strongly affected by the deposition of nitrogen and sulfur on terrestrial ecosystems. In this paper we present new quantitative estimates of the deposition of atmospheric nitrogen to ecosystems across Germany. The methodology combines prognostic and empirical modelling to establish wet deposition fluxes and land use dependent dry and occult deposition fluxes. On average, the nitrogen deposition in Germany was estimated to be 1057 eq ha-1 yr-1. The deposition maps show considerable variability across the German territory with highest deposition on forest ecosystems in or near the main agricultural and industrial areas. The accumulated deposition over Germany of this study is systematically lower (27 %) than provided in earlier studies. The main reasons are an improved wet deposition estimation and the consolidation of improved process descriptions in the LOTOS-EUROS chemistry transport model. The presented deposition estimates show a better agreement with results obtained by integrated monitoring and deposition modelling by EMEP than the earlier results. Through comparison of the new deposition distributions with critical load maps it is estimated that 70 % of the ecosystems in Germany receive too much nitrogen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
