We study several basic problems about colouring the $p$-random subgraph $G_p$ of an arbitrary graph $G$, focusing primarily on the chromatic number and colouring number of $G_p$. In particular, we show that there exist infinitely many $k$-regular graphs $G$ for which the colouring number (i.e., degeneracy) of $G_{1/2}$ is at most $k/3 + o(k)$ with high probability, thus disproving the natural prediction that such random graphs must have colouring number at least $k/2 - o(k)$.

Given finite sets $X_1,\dotsc,X_m$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ (with $d$ fixed), we prove that there are respective subsets $Y_1,\dotsc,Y_m$ with $|Y_i|\ge \frac{1}{\operatorname{poly}(m)}|X_i|$ such that, for $y_1\in Y_1,\dotsc,y_m\in Y_m$, the orientations of the $(d+1)$-tuples from $y_1,\dotsc,y_m$ do not depend on the actual choices of points $y_1,\dotsc,y_m$. This generalizes previously known case when all the sets $X_i$ are equal. Furthermore, we give a construction showing that polynomial dependence on $m$ is unavoidable, as well as an algorithm that approximates the best-possible constants in this result., Comment: 9 pages

Any $n$-tuple of points in the plane can be moved to any other $n$-tuple by a continuous motion with at most $\binom{n}{3}$ intermediate changes of the order type. We show that every convex code realizable by compact sets in the plane admits a realization consisting of polygons, and analogously every open convex code in the plane can be realized by interiors of polygons. We give factorial-type bounds on the number of vertices needed to form such realizations. For a finite point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, denote by $\text{diam}(P)$ the ratio of the largest to the smallest distances between pairs of points in $P$. Let $c_{d, \alpha}(n)$ be the largest integer $c$ such that any $n$-point set $P \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ in general position, satisfying $\text{diam}(P) < \alpha\sqrt[d]{n}$, contains an $c$-point convex independent subset. For each fixed $d\ge 1$, we obtain asymptotic estimates for the number of $d$-representable simplicial complexes on $n$ vertices as a function of $n$. The case $d=1$ corresponds to counting interval graphs, and we obtain new results in this well-studied case as well. In this paper, we show how one may (efficiently) construct two types of extremal combinatorial objects whose existence was previously conjectural. (*) Panchromatic Graphs: For fixed integer k, a k-panchromatic graph is, roughly speaking, a balanced bipartite graph with one partition class equipartitioned into k colour classes in which the common neighbourhoods of panchromatic k-sets of vertices are much larger than those of k-sets that repeat a colour. The question of their existence was raised by Karthik and Manurangsi [Combinatorica 2020]. (*) Threshold Graphs: For fixed integer k, a k-threshold graph is, roughly speaking, a balanced bipartite graph in which the common neighbourhoods of k-sets of vertices on one side are much larger than those of (k+1)-sets. The question of their existence was raised by Lin [JACM 2018]. As applications of our constructions, we show the following conditional time lower bounds on the parameterized set intersection problem where, given a collection of n sets over universe [n] and a parameter k, the goal is to find k sets with the largest intersection. (*) Assuming ETH, for any computable function F, no $n^{o(k)}$-time algorithm can approximate the parameterized set intersection problem up to factor F(k). This improves considerably on the previously best-known result under ETH due to Lin [JACM 2018], who ruled out any $n^{o(\sqrt{k})}$ time approximation algorithm for this problem. (*) Assuming SETH, for every $\varepsilon>0$ and any computable function F, no $n^{k-\varepsilon}$-time algorithm can approximate the parameterized set intersection problem up to factor F(k). The Tur\'an problem asks for the largest number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph not containing a fixed forbidden subgraph $F$. We consider the expected length of the longest common subsequence between two random words of lengths $n$ and $(1-\varepsilon)kn$ over $k$-symbol alphabet. It is well-known that this quantity is asymptotic to $\gamma_{k,\varepsilon} n$ for some constant $\gamma_{k,\varepsilon}$. We show that $\gamma_{k,\varepsilon}$ is of the order $1-c\varepsilon^2$ uniformly in $k$ and $\varepsilon$. We show that, for every set of $n$ points in the $d$-dimensional unit cube, there is an empty axis-parallel box of volume at least $\Omega(d/n)$ as $n\to\infty$ and $d$ is fixed. In the opposite direction, we give a construction without an empty axis-parallel box of volume $O(d^2\log d/n)$. Given a finite set $A \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$, points $a_1,a_2,\dotsc,a_{\ell} \in A$ form an $\ell$-hole in $A$ if they are the vertices of a convex polytope which contains no points of $A$ in its interior. We construct arbitrarily large point sets in general position in $\mathbb{R}^d$ having no holes of size $O(4^dd\log d)$ or more. This improves the previously known upper bound of order $d^{d+o(d)}$ due to Valtr. The basic version of our construction uses a certain type of equidistributed point sets, originating from numerical analysis, known as $(t,m,s)$-nets or $(t,s)$-sequences, yielding a bound of $2^{7d}$. Let $a_1,\dotsc,a_n$ be a permutation of $[n]$. Two disjoint order-isomorphic subsequences are called \emph{twins}. We show that every permutation of $[n]$ contains twins of length $\Omega(n^{3/5})$ improving the trivial bound of $\Omega(n^{1/2})$. Let $W^{(n)}$ be the $n$-letter word obtained by repeating a fixed word $W$, and let $R_n$ be a random $n$-letter word over the same alphabet. We show several results about the length of the longest common subsequence (LCS) between $W^{(n)}$ and $R_n$; in particular, we show that its expectation is $\gamma_W n-O(\sqrt{n})$ for an efficiently-computable constant $\gamma_W$. This is done by relating the problem to a new interacting particle system, which we dub "frog dynamics". In this system, the particles (`frogs') hop over one another in the order given by their labels. Stripped of the labeling, the frog dynamics reduces to a variant of the PushTASEP. In the special case when all symbols of $W$ are distinct, we obtain an explicit formula for the constant $\gamma_W$ and a closed-form expression for the stationary distribution of the associated frog dynamics. In addition, we propose new conjectures about the asymptotic of the LCS of a pair of random words. These conjectures are informed by computer experiments using a new heuristic algorithm to compute the LCS. We show that, for every linear ordering of $[2]^n$, there is a large subcube on which the ordering is lexicographic. We use this to deduce that every long sequence contains a long monotone subsequence supported on an affine cube. More generally, we prove an analogous result for linear orderings of $[k]^n$. The theta graph $\Theta_{\ell,t}$ consists of two vertices joined by $t$ vertex-disjoint paths of length $\ell$ each. How can $d+k$ vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$ be arranged so that they are as close to orthogonal as possible? In particular, define $\theta(d,k):=\min_X\max_{x\neq y\in X}|\langle x,y\rangle|$ where the minimum is taken over all collections of $d+k$ unit vectors $X\subseteq\mathbb{R}^d$. In this paper, we focus on the case where $k$ is fixed and $d\to\infty$. In establishing bounds on $\theta(d,k)$, we find an intimate connection to the existence of systems of ${k+1\choose 2}$ equiangular lines in $\mathbb{R}^k$. Using this connection, we are able to pin down $\theta(d,k)$ whenever $k\in\{1,2,3,7,23\}$ and establish asymptotics for general $k$. The main tool is an upper bound on $\mathbb{E}_{x,y\sim\mu}|\langle x,y\rangle|$ whenever $\mu$ is an isotropic probability mass on $\mathbb{R}^k$, which may be of independent interest. Our results translate naturally to the analogous question in $\mathbb{C}^d$. In this note, we present a fractional version of Haemers' bound on the Shannon capacity of a graph, which is originally due to Blasiak. This bound is a common strengthening of both Haemers' bound and the fractional chromatic number of a graph. We show that this fractional version outperforms any bound on the Shannon capacity that could be attained through Haemers' bound. We consider list-decoding in the zero-rate regime for two cases: the binary alphabet and the spherical codes in Euclidean space. Specifically, we study the maximal $\tau \in [0,1]$ for which there exists an arrangement of $M$ balls of relative Hamming radius $\tau$ in the binary hypercube (of arbitrary dimension) with the property that no point of the latter is covered by $L$ or more of them. As $M\to \infty$ the maximal $\tau$ decreases to a well-known critical value $\tau_L$. In this work, we prove several results on the rate of this convergence. For the binary case, we show that the rate is $\Theta(M^{-1})$ when $L$ is even, thus extending the classical results of Plotkin and Levenshtein for $L=2$. For $L=3$ the rate is shown to be $\Theta(M^{-\tfrac{2}{3}})$. For the similar question about spherical codes, we prove the rate is $\Omega(M^{-1})$ and $O(M^{-\tfrac{2L}{L^2-L+2}})$., Comment: 20 pages, improved exposition

Pach showed that every $d+1$ sets of points $Q_1,\dotsc,Q_{d+1} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ contain linearly-sized subsets $P_i\subset Q_i$ such that all the transversal simplices that they span intersect. We show, by means of an example, that a topological extension of Pach's theorem does not hold with subsets of size $C(\log n)^{1/(d-1)}$. We show that this is tight in dimension $2$, for all surfaces other than $\mathbb{S}^2$. Surprisingly, the optimal bound for $\mathbb{S}^2$ in the topological version of Pach's theorem is of the order $(\log n)^{1/2}$. Let $T(d,r) = (r-1)(d+1)+1$ be the parameter in Tverberg's theorem, and call a partition $\mathcal I$ of $\{1,2,\ldots,T(d,r)\}$ into $r$ parts a "Tverberg type". We say that $\mathcal I$ "occurs" in an ordered point sequence $P$ if $P$ contains a subsequence $P'$ of $T(d,r)$ points such that the partition of $P'$ that is order-isomorphic to $\mathcal I$ is a Tverberg partition. We say that $\mathcal I$ is "unavoidable" if it occurs in every sufficiently long point sequence. In this paper we study the problem of determining which Tverberg types are unavoidable. We conjecture a complete characterization of the unavoidable Tverberg types, and we prove some cases of our conjecture for $d\le 4$. Along the way, we study the avoidability of many other geometric predicates. Our techniques also yield a large family of $T(d,r)$-point sets for which the number of Tverberg partitions is exactly $(r-1)!^d$. Let $\mathbb{P}^s$ be the $s$-dimensional complex projective space, and let $X, Y$ be two non-empty open subsets of $\mathbb{P}^s$ in the Zariski topology. A hypersurface $H$ in $\mathbb{P}^s\times\mathbb{P}^s$ induces a bipartite graph $G$ as follows: the partite sets of $G$ are $X$ and $Y$, and the edge set is defined by $\overline{u}\sim\overline{v}$ if and only if $(\overline{u},\overline{v})\in H$. Motivated by the Tur\'an problem for bipartite graphs, we say that $H\cap (X\times Y)$ is $(s,t)$-grid-free provided that $G$ contains no complete bipartite subgraph that has $s$ vertices in $X$ and $t$ vertices in $Y$. We conjecture that every $(s,t)$-grid-free hypersurface is equivalent, in a suitable sense, to a hypersurface whose degree in $\overline{y}$ is bounded by a constant $d = d(s,t)$, and we discuss possible notions of the equivalence. We establish the result that if $H\cap(X\times \mathbb{P}^2)$ is $(2,2)$-grid-free, then there exists $F\in \mathbb{C}[\overline{x},\overline{y}]$ of degree $\le 2$ in $\overline{y}$ such that $H\cap(X\times \mathbb{P}^2) = \{F = 0\}\cap (X\times \mathbb{P}^2)$. An $L$-matrix is a matrix whose off-diagonal entries belong to a set $L$, and whose diagonal is zero. Let $N(r,L)$ be the maximum size of a square $L$-matrix of rank at most $r$. Many applications of linear algebra in extremal combinatorics involve a bound on $N(r,L)$. We review some of these applications, and prove several new results on $N(r,L)$. In particular, we classify the sets $L$ for which $N(r,L)$ is linear, and show that if $N(r,L)$ is superlinear and $L\subset \mathbb{Z}$, then $N(r,L)$ is at least quadratic. We consider codes over fixed alphabets against worst-case symbol deletions. For any fixed $k \ge 2$, we construct a family of codes over alphabet of size $k$ with positive rate, which allow efficient recovery from a worst-case deletion fraction approaching $1-\frac{2}{k+\sqrt k}$. In particular, for binary codes, we are able to recover a fraction of deletions approaching $1/(\sqrt 2 +1)=\sqrt 2-1 \approx 0.414$. Previously, even non-constructively the largest deletion fraction known to be correctable with positive rate was $1-\Theta(1/\sqrt{k})$, and around $0.17$ for the binary case. Our result pins down the largest fraction of correctable deletions for $k$-ary codes as $1-\Theta(1/k)$, since $1-1/k$ is an upper bound even for the simpler model of erasures where the locations of the missing symbols are known. Given a family of graphs $\mathcal{H}$, the extremal number $\textrm{ex}(n, \mathcal{H})$ is the largest $m$ for which there exists a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges containing no graph from the family $\mathcal{H}$ as a subgraph. We show that for every rational number $r$ between $1$ and $2$, there is a family of graphs $\mathcal{H}_r$ such that $\textrm{ex}(n, \mathcal{H}_r) = \Theta(n^r)$. A large family of words must contain two words that are similar. We investigate several problems where the measure of similarity is the length of a common subsequence. We construct a family of n^{1/3} permutations on n letters, such that LCS of any two of them is only cn^{1/3}, improving a construction of Beame, Blais, and Huynh-Ngoc. We relate the problem of constructing many permutations with small LCS to the twin word problem of Axenovich, Person and Puzynina. In 2008, Bukh, Matousek, and Nivasch conjectured that for every n-point set S in R^d and every k, 0 <= k <= d-1, there exists a k-flat f in R^d (a "centerflat") that lies at "depth" (k+1) n / (k+d+1) - O(1) in S, in the sense that every halfspace that contains f contains at least that many points of S. This claim is true and tight for k=0 (this is Rado's centerpoint theorem), as well as for k = d-1 (trivial). Bukh et al. showed the existence of a (d-2)-flat at depth (d-1) n / (2d-1) - O(1) (the case k = d-2). In this paper we concentrate on the case k=1 (the case of "centerlines"), in which the conjectured value for the leading constant is 2/(d+2). We prove that 2/(d+2) is an *upper bound* for the leading constant. Specifically, we show that for every fixed d and every n there exists an n-point set in R^d for which no line in R^d lies at depth larger than 2n/(d+2) + o(n). This point set is the "stretched grid"---a set which has been previously used by Bukh et al. for other related purposes. Tverberg's theorem asserts that every (k-1)(d+1)+1 points in R^d can be partitioned into k parts, so that the convex hulls of the parts have a common intersection. Calder and Eckhoff asked whether there is a purely combinatorial deduction of Tverberg's theorem from the special case k=2. First, |f(A)+f(A)|+|AA| is substantially larger than |A| for an arbitrary polynomial f over F_p. Second, a characterization is given for the rational functions f and g for which |f(A)+f(A)|+|g(A,A)| can be as small as |A|, for large |A|. A set N is called a "weak epsilon-net" (with respect to convex sets) for a finite set X in R^d if N intersects every convex set that contains at least epsilon*|X| points of X. For every fixed d>=2 and every r>=1 we construct sets X in R^d for which every weak (1/r)-net has at least Omega(r log^{d-1} r) points; this is the first superlinear lower bound for weak epsilon-nets in a fixed dimension. The construction is a "stretched grid", i.e., the Cartesian product of d suitable fast-growing finite sequences, and convexity in this grid can be analyzed using "stair-convexity", a new variant of the usual notion of convexity. We also consider weak epsilon-nets for the diagonal of our stretched grid in R^d, d>=3, which is an "intrinsically 1-dimensional" point set. In this case we exhibit slightly superlinear lower bounds (involving the inverse Ackermann function), showing that upper bounds by Alon, Kaplan, Nivasch, Sharir, and Smorodinsky (2008) are not far from the truth in the worst case. Using the stretched grid we also improve the known upper bound for the so-called "second selection lemma" in the plane by a logarithmic factor: We obtain a set T of t triangles with vertices in an n-point set in the plane such that no point is contained in more than O(t^2 / (n^3 log (n^3/t))) triangles of T., Comment: To appear in Israel J. The following result was proved by Barany in 1982: For every d >= 1 there exists c_d > 0 such that for every n-point set S in R^d there is a point p in R^d contained in at least c_d n^{d+1} - O(n^d) of the simplices spanned by S. We investigate the largest possible value of c_d. It was known that c_d <= 1/(2^d(d+1)!) (this estimate actually holds for every point set S). We construct sets showing that c_d <= (d+1)^{-(d+1)}, and we conjecture this estimate to be tight. The best known lower bound, due to Wagner, is c_d >= gamma_d := (d^2+1)/((d+1)!(d+1)^{d+1}); in his method, p can be chosen as any centerpoint of S. We construct n-point sets with a centerpoint that is contained in no more than gamma_d n^{d+1}+O(n^d) simplices spanned by S, thus showing that the approach using an arbitrary centerpoint cannot be further improved. We also prove that for every n-point set S in R^d there exists a (d-2)-flat that stabs at least c_{d,d-2} n^3 - O(n^2) of the triangles spanned by S, with c_{d,d-2}>=(1/24)(1- 1/(2d-1)^2).
