The diffusion of monovacancies in tungsten is studied computationally over a wide temperature range from 1300K until the melting point of the material. Our modelling is based on Molecular Dynamics technique and Density Functional Theory. The monovacancy migration barriers are calculated using nudged elastic band method for nearest and next-nearest neighbour monovacancy jumps. The diffusion pre-exponential factor for monovacancy diffusion is found to be two to three orders of magnitude higher than commonly used in computational studies, resulting in attempt frequency of the order 1015 Hz. Multiple nearest neighbour jumps of monovacancy are found to play an important role in the contribution to the total diffusion coefficient, especially at temperatures above 2/3 of Tm, resulting in an upward curvature of the Arrhenius diagram. We report a hydrogen induced vacancy formation mechanism in tungsten based on classical molecular dynamics simulations. We demonstrate the vacancy formation in tungsten due to the presence of hydrogen associated directly with a stable hexagonal self-interstitial cluster as well as a linear crowdion. The stability of different self-interstitial structures has been further studied and it is particularly shown that hydrogen plays a crucial role in determining the configuration of SIAs, in which the hexagonal cluster structure is preferred. Energetic analysis has been carried out to prove that the formation of SIA clusters facilitates the formation of vacancies. Such a mechanism contributes to the understanding of the early stage of the hydrogen blistering in tungsten under a fusion reactor environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molecular dynamics (MD) and binary collision approximation (BCA) computer simulations are employed to study surface damage by single ion impacts. The predictions of BCA and MD simulations of displacement cascades in amorphous and crystalline silicon and BCC tungsten by \(1keV Ar^+\) ion bombardment are compared. Single ion impacts are studied at angles of \(50^{\circ}, 60^{\circ} and 80^{\circ}\) from normal incidence. Four parameters for BCA simulations have been optimized to obtain the best agreement of the results with MD. For the conditions reported here, BCA agrees with MD simulation results at displacements larger than \(5\mathring{A}\) for amorphous Si, whereas at small displacements a difference between BCA and MD arises due to a material flow component observed in MD simulations but absent from a regular BCA approach due to the algorithm limitations. MD and BCA simulation results for crystalline W are found to be in a good agreement even at small displacements, while in crystalline Si there is some difference due to displacements in amorphous pockets., Engineering and Applied Sciences

Energetic particle irradiation can cause surface ultra-smoothening, self-organized nanoscale pattern formation or degradation of the structural integrity of nuclear reactor components. A fundamental understanding of the mechanisms governing the selection among these outcomes has been elusive. Here we predict the mechanism governing the transition from pattern formation to flatness using only parameter-free molecular dynamics simulations of single-ion impacts as input into a multiscale analysis, obtaining good agreement with experiment. Our results overturn the paradigm attributing these phenomena to the removal of target atoms via sputter erosion: the mechanism dominating both stability and instability is the impact-induced redistribution of target atoms that are not sputtered away, with erosive effects being essentially irrelevant. We discuss the potential implications for the formation of a mysterious nanoscale topography, leading to surface degradation, of tungsten plasma-facing fusion reactor walls. Consideration of impact-induced redistribution processes may lead to a new design criterion for stability under irradiation.
