Historically, practitioners and researchers have used selected count station data and survey-based methods along with demand modeling to forecast vehicle miles traveled (VMT). While these methods may suffer from self-reporting bias or spatial and temporal constraints, the widely available connected vehicle (CV) data at 3 s fidelity, independent of any fixed sensor constraints, present a unique opportunity to complement traditional VMT estimation processes with real-world data in near real-time. This study developed scalable methodologies and analyzed 238 billion records representing 16 months of connected vehicle data from January 2022 through April 2023 for Indiana, classified as internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid (HVs) or electric vehicles (EVs). Year-over-year comparisons showed a significant increase in EVMT (+156%) with minor growth in ICEVMT (+2%). A route-level analysis enables stakeholders to evaluate the impact of their charging infrastructure investments at the federal, state, and even local level, unbound by jurisdictional constraints. Mean and median EV trip lengths on the six longest interstate corridors showed a 7.1 and 11.5 mile increase, respectively, from April 2022 to April 2023. Although the current CV dataset does not randomly sample the full fleet of ICE, HVs, and EVs, the methodologies and visuals in this study present a framework for future evaluations of the return on charging infrastructure investments on a regular basis using real-world data from electric vehicles traversing U.S. roads. This study presents novel contributions in utilizing CV data to compute performance measures such as VMT and trip lengths by vehicle type—EV, HV, or ICE, unattainable using traditional data collection practices that cannot differentiate among vehicle types due to inherent limitations. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that in 2020, 7.3% of large truck driver fatalities had speed as a contributing factor. Several states have implemented truck differential speed limits (DSLs) with the objective of improving safety. This study compares truck speeds in 16 states, 8 of which have implemented DSLs (Arkansas, California, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Montana, Oregon, and Washington) and 8 of which have not (Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Wyoming). The DSLs ranged from 55 MPH in California (CA) to 70 MPH in Montana (MT). Over 240,000 speed samples from connected trucks were analyzed during a one-week period from 15–22 April 2024. The 50th percentile truck speeds ranged from 60 MPH in Oregon to 69 MPH in Wyoming. The 85th percentile truck speeds ranged from 65 MPH in Washington, Oregon, and California to 74 MPH in Wyoming. The 85th percentile speeds across all segments were greater than the posted truck speed limit in 90% of segments with DSLs, but only 12.5% of segments without DSLs. The average interquartile range (IQR) of truck speeds for the eight states with DSLs was 19% smaller than the average IQR of the eight states without DSLs. Connected vehicle data have the potential to warn motorists of impending slowdowns and congestion in real time. Multiple data providers have recently begun providing in-cab alerts to commercial vehicle drivers. This study reports on one such deployment of in-cab alerts on 44 corridors in Indiana from April–June 2024. Approximately 20,000 alerts were analyzed, with 92% being Congestion alerts and 8% being Dangerous Slowdown alerts. Observations showed that 15% of trucks lowered their speeds by at least 5 mph 30 s after receiving a Congestion alert, while 21% of trucks reduced their speeds by at least 5 mph 30 s after receiving a Dangerous Slowdown alert. The analysis also showed that a majority of Congestion alerted trucks encountered slow-speed traffic about 3 min after receiving an alert, while a majority of Dangerous Slowdown alerted drivers had traveled through the zone of slow speeds 2 min after receiving the alert. Although these results are encouraging, the study also found that 8.1% of Congestion alerts and 8.3% of Dangerous Slowdown alerts were received by trucks when they were operating at speeds of less than or equal to 45 mph, indicating they were already in congested conditions. The study reports that 43% of trucks that received Dangerous Slowdown alerts never reduced their speed below 45 mph. The paper concludes that it is important to converge on a shared vision for these performance measures so that public agencies, in-cab alert providers, and trucking companies can agilely improve these systems and increase driver confidence in the alerts. Good visibility of lane markings is important for all road users, particularly autonomous vehicles. In general, nighttime retroreflectivity is one of the most challenging marking visibility characteristics for agencies to monitor and maintain, particularly in cold weather climates where agency snowplows remove retroreflective material during winter operations. Traditional surface-applied paint and glass beads typically only last one season in cold weather climates with routine snowplow activity. Recently, transportation agencies in cold weather climates have begun deploying improved recessed, durable pavement markings that can last several years and have very high retroreflective properties. Several dozen installations may occur in a state in any calendar year, presenting a challenge for states that need to program annual repainting of traditional waterborne paint lines, but not paint over the much more costly durable markings. This study reports on the utilization of mobile mapping LiDAR systems to classify and evaluate pavement markings along a 73-mile section of westbound I-74 in Indiana. LiDAR intensity data can be used to classify pavement markings as either tape or non-tape and then identify areas of tape markings that need maintenance. RGB images collected during LiDAR intensity data collection were used to validate the LiDAR classification. These techniques can be used by agencies to develop accurate pavement marking inventories to ensure that only painted lines (or segments with missing tape) are repainted during annual maintenance. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensors at signalized intersections can accurately track the movement of virtually all objects passing through at high sampling rates. This study presents methodologies to estimate vehicle and pedestrian traffic signal performance measures using LiDAR trajectory data. Over 15,000,000 vehicle and 170,000 pedestrian waypoints detected during a 24 h period at an intersection in Utah are analyzed to describe the proposed techniques. Sampled trajectories are linear referenced to generate Purdue Probe Diagrams (PPDs). Vehicle-based PPDs are used to estimate movement level turning counts, 85th percentile queue lengths (85QL), arrivals on green (AOG), highway capacity manual (HCM) level of service (LOS), split failures (SF), and downstream blockage (DSB) by time of day (TOD). Pedestrian-based PPDs are used to estimate wait times and the proportion of people that traverse multiple crosswalks. Although vehicle signal performance can be estimated from several days of aggregated connected vehicle (CV) data, LiDAR data provides the ability to measure performance in real time. Furthermore, LiDAR can measure pedestrian speeds. At the studied location, the 15th percentile pedestrian walking speed was estimated to be 3.9 ft/s. The ability to directly measure these pedestrian speeds allows agencies to consider alternative crossing times than those suggested by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Advances and cost reductions in Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) sensor technology have allowed for their implementation in detecting vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians at signalized intersections. Most LiDAR use cases have focused on safety analyses using its high-fidelity tracking capabilities. This study presents a methodology to transform LiDAR data into localized, verified, and linear-referenced trajectories to derive Purdue Probe Diagrams (PPDs). The following four performance measures are then derived from the PPDs: arrivals on green (AOG), split failures (SF), downstream blockage (DSB), and control delay level of service (LOS). Noise is filtered for each detected vehicle by iteratively projecting each sample's future location and keeping the subsequent sample that is close enough to the estimated destination. Then, a far side is defined for the analyzed intersection's movement to linear reference sampled trajectories and to remove those that do not cross through that point. The technique is demonstrated by using over one hour of LiDAR data at an intersection in Utah to derive PPDs. Signal performance is then estimated from these PPDs. The results are compared to those obtained from comparable PPDs derived from connected vehicle (CV) trajectory data. The generated PPDs from both data sources are similar, with relatively modest differences of 1% AOG and a 1.39 s/veh control delay. Practitioners can use the presented methodology to estimate trajectory-based traffic signal performance measures from their deployed LiDAR sensors. The paper concludes by recommending that unfiltered LiDAR data are used for deriving PPDs and extending the detection zones to cover the largest observed queues to improve performance estimation reliability. Intersection safety has been traditionally evaluated using three to five years of crash data. Recent literature suggests that connected vehicle (CV)-derived hard braking (HB) events can provide a surrogate for crashes with only a few weeks or months of data collection. This study used CV trajectories to derive HB events. Then, the HB events were normalized as the ratio of HB events to sampled CV trajectories. The normalized HB ratios were evaluated and compared at 435 signalized intersections, roundabouts, and all-way stops in Indiana. The analysis showed that signalized intersections and roundabouts had the highest counts of HB events, and all-way stops had the highest HB ratios. Through movements at signalized intersections showed the lowest HB ratios, whereas left turns at all-way stops had the highest ratios. A density analysis of the geospatial occurrence of HB events concluded that they tend to occur closest to the intersection center at all-way stops, but are more evenly distributed at signalized intersections. Additionally, a speed analysis indicated that HB events at signalized intersection through movements tend to occur at higher speeds, roughly between 26 and 36 MPH, perhaps due to the driver reaction during the onset of yellow. The findings presented in this study provide transportation agencies with insights on the occurrence of normalized HB ratios at three different intersection types. The data provided in this paper provide a framework for agencies to use HB ratios to screen different types of intersections for further evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
