5. Ab initio calculations of electron affinity and ionization potential of carbon nanotubes

Abstract

By combining ab initio all-electron localized orbital and pseudopotential plane-wave approaches we report on calculations of the electron affinity (EA) and the ionization potential (IP) of (5, 5) and (7, 0) single-wall carbon nanotubes. The role played by finite-size effects and nanotube termination has been analysed by comparing several hydrogen-passivated and not passivated nanotube segments. The dependence of the EA and IP on both the quantum confinement effect, due to the nanotube finite length, and the charge accumulation on the edges, is studied in detail. Also, the EA and IP are compared to the energies of the lowest unoccupied and highest occupied states, respectively, upon increasing the nanotube length. We report a slow convergence with respect to the number of atoms. The effect of nanotube packing in arrays on the electronic properties is eventually elucidated as a function of the intertube distance.

Abstract

L’obiettivo del presente capitolo quello di fornire un quadro generale dell’assetto organizzativo del settore pubblico. A questo scopo, il capitolo artico lato nel modo che segue. Il paragrafo 2 propone una definizione di organizzazioni pubbliche, mettendo in evidenza i tratti che distinguono queste dalle organizzazioni private. Il paragrafo 3 prende in esame i diversi criteri di specializzazione del lavoro nelle organizzazioni pubbliche (3.a.b.c.d). Il paragrafo 4 affronta la questione del coordinamento organizzativo, illustrando i principali meccanismi del coordinamento che si riscontrano in gran parte delle organizzazioni pubbliche. Nel paragrafo 5 si analizzano le relazioni interorganizzative cosiddette verticali , cio quelle che si instaurano tra organizzazioni pubbliche che operano ai diversi livelli di governo dello Stato (centrale, regionale, locale). Nel paragrafo 6 si analizzano le relazioni interorganizzative cosiddette orizzontali , cio quelle che nella conduzione della cosa pubblica intercorrono fra organizzazioni pubbliche e organizzazioni private profit e non profit. Il conclusivo paragrafo 7 sintetizza le principali questioni trattate in questo capitolo, offrendo spunti di riflessione significativi per lo sviluppo della ricerca futura e per le implicazioni manageriali.

Abstract

The increasing resistance of fungi to antibiotics is a severe challenge in public health, and newly effective drugs are required. Promising potential medications are lipopeptides, linear antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) conjugated to a lipid tail, usually at the N-terminus. In this paper, we investigated the in vitro and in vivo antifungal activity of three short myristoylated and nonmyristoylated peptides derived from a mutant of the AMP Chionodracine. We determined their interaction with anionic and zwitterionic membrane-mimicking vesicles and their structure during this interaction. We then investigated their cytotoxic and hemolytic activity against mammalian cells. Lipidated peptides showed a broad spectrum of activity against a relevant panel of pathogen fungi belonging to Candida spp., including the multidrug-resistant C. auris. The antifungal activity was also observed vs. biofilms of C. albicans, C. tropicalis, and C. auris. Finally, a pilot efficacy study was conducted on the in vivo model consisting of Galleria mellonella larvae. Treatment with the most-promising myristoylated peptide was effective in counteracting the infection from C. auris and C. albicans and the death of the larvae. Therefore, this myristoylated peptide is a potential candidate to develop antifungal agents against human fungal pathogens.

Abstract

A Grand Canonical Monte Carlo scheme, based on united events combining protonation/deprotonation and insertion/deletion of HCl molecules is proposed for the generation of polyaniline structures at intermediate doping levels between 0% (PANI EB) and 100% (PANI ES). A procedure based on this scheme and subsequent structure relaxations using molecular dynamics is described and validated. Using the proposed scheme and the corresponding procedure, atomistic models of amorphous PANI-HCl structures were generated and studied at different doping levels. Density, structure factors, and solubility parameters were calculated. Their values agree well with available experimental data. The interactions of HCl with PANI have been studied and distribution of their energies has been analyzed. The procedure has also been extended to the generation of PANI models including adsorbed water and the effect of inclusion of water molecules on PANI properties has also been modeled and discussed. The protocol described here is general and the proposed United Event Grand Canonical Monte Carlo scheme can be easily extended to similar polymeric materials used in gas sensing and to other systems involving adsorption and chemical reactions steps.
