Abstract

On basis of the theorem of a universal shower development stating that a hadronically generated extensive air shower is completely described by the primary energy, the position of the shower maximum and a parameter related to the total muon number, the so-called correlation curve method is developed and applied to KASCADE data. Correlation information of the muon and electron content of showers measured by the KASCADE experiment are used for the reconstruction of energy and mass of primary cosmic rays. Systematic uncertainties of the method and the results are discussed in detail. It is shown that by this method general tendencies in spectrum and composition indeed can be revealed, but the absolute normalization in energy and mass scale requires much more detailed simulations., Comment: article accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

14. Free Calcium Concentration, Calpain-2 Activity, and Final Product Tenderness of Electrically Stimulated Beef

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of timing of electrical stimulation on free calcium concentration, calpain-2 activity, Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF), and consumer sensory analysis. Twenty-three beef steers were harvested and stimulated (S) using extra-low voltage or not stimulated (NS), at exsanguination and/or 1 h postmortem, resulting in 4 different stimulation treatments: NS-NS, NS-S, S-NS, or S-S. Samples were removed from the longissimus lumborum (LL) and semimembranosus (SM) for free calcium and calpain-2 analysis on days 1, 4, and 14 postmortem. WBSF and sensory analysis steaks were removed on day 4 and frozen (4 d) or aged to 14 d postmortem. Data were analyzed using the mixed model or generalized linear mixed model procedure of SAS (SAS Institute, Inc., Cary, NC), with significance determined at P < 0.05. There was a tendency for an aging-period-by-stimulation-treatment interaction for LL free calcium concentration (P = 0.05), and there was a significant difference between aging periods (P < 0.01). No difference was observed in free calcium concentration in the SM between stimulation treatments (P = 0.44); aging, however, significantly increased SM free calcium concentration (P < 0.01). Stimulation did not impact native calpain-2 activity in the LL (P = 0.71) or SM (P = 0.89). Stimulation treatment did not improve tenderness values for WBSF analysis for the LL (P = 0.69) or SM (P = 0.61) or consumer sensory analysis in the LL (P = 0.56) or SM (P = 0.36). A longer aging period tended to increase calpain-2 activity in the SM (P = 0.08), improve WBSF in the LL (P = 0.09), and significantly improve consumer tenderness scores in the SM (P < 0.01). In conclusion, the timing of electrical stimulation utilized in the current study tended to influence free calcium concentration in the LL but did not influence calpain-2 activity or beef tenderness. Aging, however, improved tenderness.

Abstract

We present the design and first test results of a new flash analog-to-digital-converters (FADCs)-based data acquisition (DAQ) system for the Grande array of the KASCADE-Grande experiment. The original KASCADE experiment at the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Germany, has been extended by 37 detector stations of the former EAS-TOP experiment (Grande array) to provide sensitivity to energies of primary particles from the cosmos of up to [10.sup.18] eV. The new FADC-based DAQ system will improve the quality of the data taken by the Grande array by digitizing the scintillator signals with a 250-MHz sampling rate. The signals of each of the 37 detector stations are continuously recorded using interleaved 12-bit FADCs located on custom-made digitizer boards at each station. The digitizer boards feature a self-triggering mechanism, initiating the data transmission to the Grande DAQ station using programmable thresholds, a timestamp mechanism, and optical data transmission. The control logic is implemented using field progammable gate arrays (FPGAs). Five optical receiver and temporary storage modules receive the data from up to eight stations each (at an approximate rate of 2.5 MB/s per station) and transfer them into the memory of one of five PCs via a customized PCI interface card. Running on a master PC, the data acquisition software searches for coincidences in the timestamps, incorporates triggers generated by the other KASCADE-Grande components, and builds air shower events from the data of the individual stations. Completed Grande events are sent to the central DAQ of KASCADE-Grande at an approximate rate of a few air shower events per second. Two Grande stations have been equipped with the FADC-based data acquisition system, and first data are shown. 50. Comparison of Visual Analog Pain Score Reported to Physician vs Nurse.

Abstract

Background: The visual analog scale (VAS) is considered a reliable and validated measure of patient-reported acute pain. Patient-reported outcome measures are becoming the standard of care throughout the orthopedic community, but interpretation and clinical applications are still under investigation. The aim of the current study was to compare preoperative patient-reported VAS scores reported at the same visit to nursing staff and the treating surgeon. Our hypothesis was that there would be no difference in the scores reported. Methods: This study is a retrospective cohort of 201 consecutive foot and ankle patients treated by a single surgeon. The patients were asked to rate their pain intensity by the nursing staff and then by the surgeon using a standard horizontal VAS 0 to 10, from “no pain” to the “worst pain.” Differences in reported pain values were analyzed. Results: The results demonstrate that patients reported higher pain scores to the surgeon in 81% of the encounters, nursing staff 8%, and equal 11%. On average, the VAS score reported to the surgeon was significantly (P < .05) higher than that reported to the nursing staff. Conclusion: The current study found a statistically significant higher patient-reported pain score to the treating surgeon compared to the nursing staff. While the exact cause is unclear, the discrepant pain scores call into question the validity of the VAS, considered a fifth vital sign and standard outcome measure in an outpatient clinic setting.
