Für die Dekarbonisierung des Energiesystems spielt die Energieversorgung von Gebäuden eine wichtige Rolle. Der Fokus des Energiemanagements lag bisher v.a. auf einzelnen Gebäuden und betrachtete die verschiedenen Sektoren, wie Strom oder Wärme zumeist separat. Mit dem Ziel Synergieeffekte zu nutzen und die Effizienz der Energieversorgung in Nachbarschaften zu optimieren, wurde im Forschungsprojekt MEMAP eine Softwareumgebung entwickelt für das gebäude- und sektorenübergreifende Energiemanagement in Quartieren während des Live-Betriebs. Als akademischer Partner im Projektkonsortium lag der Fokus im Teilprojekt der Munich School of Engineering (MSE) der Technischen Universität München (TUM) auf der Modellierung, Optimierung und Simulation der betrachteten Quartiere als Multi-Energiesysteme. Ein Plattformkonzept wurde erarbeitet für die Vernetzung von lokalen Energiemanagementsystemen (EMS) im Quartier unter Verwendung des Kommunikationsstandards OPC UA zur Aggregation der Daten von den einzelnen Gebäuden. Basierend darauf wurden abstrahierte und transferierbare Modelle für die Abbildung der relevantesten Anlagenklassen in Quartieren entwickelt. Gemäß dem aktuellen Stand der Technik wurden diese eingebettet in die Formulierung eines modellprädiktiven Reglers (MPC) für die gekoppelte Optimierung von elektrischen und thermischen Energieströmen im Quartier. Das MPC-framework erlaubt es dabei auch Vorhersagen für zeitlich veränderliche Rahmenbedingungen, wie volatile erneuerbare Energieerzeugung, schwankende Preise und Lastkurven der Verbraucher im Quartier proaktiv zu berücksichtigen. So können z.B. Preisunterschiede automatisiert genutzt und Speicher vorausschauend be- oder entladen werden, um Betriebskosten oder CO2-Emissionen zu minimieren. Die Formulierung und Lösung des zughörigen gemischt-ganzzahligen linearen (MILP) Optimierungsproblems wurde in einer Java-basierten Softwareimplementierung mit den Projektpartnern automatisiert. Ergänzt durch ein entwickeltes Informationsmodell und Kommunikationskonzept für den Livebetrieb entstand so die MEMAP Plattform als Prototyp einer Quartiersenergiemanagement-Lösung. Das Labor für Combined Smart Energy Systems (CoSES) der TUM diente für diese als eine Testumgebung im Projekt. Hier wurde realitätsnah die Praxistauglichkeit der Schnittstellen gezeigt und die Funktion der entwickelten Konzepte und Software-Artefakte anhand von Experimenten mit realer Anlagentechnik eines Quartiers validiert. Das im Projekt entwickelte Planungstool bietet eine benutzerfreundliche Oberfläche, nutzt denselben Softwarekern wie die Plattform und erlaubt es benutzerfreundlich unterschiedlichste Szenarien zu simulieren. Hiermit wurden simulativ ökologische und ökonomische Vorteile des optimierten Energieverbundes gegenüber dem Einzelbetrieb gezeigt. Durch Umfragen im Feldtestgebiet Riemerling (nahe München) wurde die Akzeptanz des MEMAP-Konzeptes bei potenziellen Anwendern untersucht, wobei insgesamt eine positive Resonanz festzustellen war. Zusammen mit den Projektpartnern wurde basierend auf dem Szenario in Riemerling eine Wirtschaftlichkeitsbetrachtung durchgeführt. Die TUM untersuchte geeignete Vergütungsmodelle und die Allokation von Kosten für den optimierten Betrieb eines Energieverbundes. Auch wurde die technische Infrastruktur für die thermohydraulische Umsetzung bidirektionaler Wärmeströme zwischen Prosumern im Quartier untersucht. Es wurde gezeigt, dass deren Modellierung und Regelung aufgrund der dezentralen Aktoren und ihrer gegenseitigen Abhängigkeiten sehr komplex sind und weiterer Forschunsgbedarf besteht. Der Source Code der entwickelten MEMAP-Plattform und des Planungstools ist in einem GitLab Repository unter Open Source Lizenz verfügbar. Die Projektergebnisse, sowie Erkenntnisse wurden in diversen wissenschaftlichen Publikationen, sowie Fachveröffentlichungen und Präsentationen verbreitet. Mit der MEMAP Plattform als Tool für das optimierte Energiemanagement in Nachbarschaften und den begleitenden Untersuchungen wurde mit dem Projekt somit ein Beitrag zur Energieeffizienz von Quartieren und einer nachhaltigen Energieversorgung geleistet.

Der Zusammenschluss von Unternehmen in Lieferantennetzwerken auf Basis digitaler Plattformen bietet eine Möglichkeit, der Forderung nach Flexibilität in der Industrie 4.0 nachzukommen. Anhand der Charakterisierung eines realen Lieferantennetzwerkes werden Use Cases für die Lieferantenanbindung hergeleitet. Diese dienen als Diskussionsgrundlage von Potenzialen und Herausforderungen der Anbindung, wobei sich die Frage nach der optimalen Integrationstiefe stellt. Hierzu wurde ein anwenderorientiertes Entscheidungsmodell abgeleitet.

Thesis (MCom (Risk Management))--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2013 The current research was undertaken to assess if the prices in the South African capital market imply a risk free rate that is not equal to the theoretical risk free rate. The research was conducted by means of a literature review and desktop-research-based analysis of the market price based yield curve. The literature review was conducted to establish the importance of the risk free rate in the financial systems dynamics. The literature review highlighted that all the portfolio theories and performance-measure indicators have the risk free rate at the core of their methodology. This implies that the risk free rate is the most important concept that determines the market demand of different instruments. Next, a comparison has been drawn between the BESA published bond yield curve and a market-price-based yield curve developed by the researcher. The findings establish that the market price derived risk free rate is higher than the theoretical risk free rate. It was also found that the shape of the yield curve is different from the BESA projected yield curve, and that it is indicative of future problems in the South African capital market. The implications of investors‟ perceptions of the higher risk free rate are discussed and it is revealed that the foreign investors consider the country risk and the default risk associated with the South African government as higher than the BESA may perceive it to be. Filme und Serien wie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lola rennt und How I Met Your Mother etablieren zunehmend subjektive, fragmentierte, assoziative Erzählformen. Es stellt sich die Frage, weshalb gerade heute diese Veränderungen bei populären Erzählungen auftreten. In dieser Diplomarbeit wird ausgehend von einem kulturwissenschaftlichen, historisch-soziologischen Standpunkt argumentiert, dass Wechselwirkungen und Parallelen zwischen den neuartigen Codes und Praktiken der Social Media und der Transformation von Film- und Fernsehnarrativen bestehen. Basierend auf Andreas Reckwitz’ Ansatz zum “hybriden Subjekt” wird das Subjektmodell der “Participatory Culture” als hybride Formation von Elementen aus früheren Subjektkulturen definiert, in deren Zentrum die digitale Selbstnarration auf Blogs, Social Network Sites und Content Communitys wie YouTube und Flickr steht. Bisherige Theorien wie jene von David Bordwell, Marie-Laure Ryan, Janet Murray oder Thomas Elsaesser haben bereits Ähnlichkeiten zwischen den Computertechnologien und den aktuellen, komplexen Narrativen aufgezeigt. Die vorliegende Arbeit bezieht die Social Media als bislang vernach- lässigte Einflussgröße mit ein und berücksichtigt den Wandel der Subjektkultur, in welcher die Erzählformen eingebettet sind, um die Kategorie des “Social Network Narrative” zu entwickeln. Im Zuge dessen werden die zehn meistgenutzten Social Media Plattformen auf kommunikative Praktiken und Funktionen untersucht, die im Detail anhand von Facebook und Twitter illustriert werden. Anschließend werden How I Met Your Mother und Vantage Point mit der Terminologie von Gérard Genette und Seymour Chatman analysiert und unter dem Gesichtspunkt des “Social Network Narrative” exemplarisch interpretiert. Zu den spezifischen Praktiken auf Facebook und Twitter zählen Sharing, Feedback, Verknüpfen, assoziatives Browsen und gezieltes Suchen. Die meist kollaborativen Erzählungen entstehen im Wechselspiel aus subjektivem “Telling” und dokumentarischem “Showing” unter anderem durch experimentelle Wahlentscheidungen beim Auswählen, Sortieren und Rekombinieren bestehender Inhalte. Die Entwicklung populärer Narrative zur transmedialen Erweiterung der Diegese, an deren Entschlüsselung und Erzählung die Prosumer aktiv mit Hilfe der Social Media partizipieren sollen, befindet sich allerdings noch am Anfang, weshalb das “Social Network Narrative” als ein Beitrag zur wissenschaftlichen Aufarbeitung und Systematisierung der neuartigen Erzählstrategien zu verstehen ist, der keinen Anspruch auf Endgültigkeit erhebt., Films and TV-Shows like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Run Lola Run and How I Met Your Mother establish increasingly subjective, fragmented and associative narratives. The question arises, why these changes happen to enter into popular narration at this very time. This thesis argues, drawing on cultural theory and historical sociology, that interdependencies and parallels between the new codes and practices of social media and the transformation of narrative strategies in film and TV exist. Making use of Andreas Reckwitz’ theory of the hybridity of the self, today’s “participatory culture” is defined as a hybrid formation of elements from earlier cultures of the self based on digital narration of the self on blogs, social network sites and content communities such as YouTube and Flickr. Previous approaches like those of David Bordwell, Marie-Laure Ryan, Janet Murray or Thomas Elsaesser pointed out similarities between computer technologies and current narratives of high complexity. This thesis integrates the thus far neglected influences of social media and the transformed subject formation, in which these narrative forms are embedded and develops the category of “social network narratives”. In the course of elaborating this new type of narrative, the communicative practices and functions of the ten most popular social media platforms are briefly discussed with an in-depth look at Facebook and Twitter. Following the terminology of Gérard Genette and Seymour Chatman How I Met Your Mother and Vantage Point are analyzed and interpreted in the context of the “social network narrative”. The specific practices on Facebook and Twitter include sharing, giving feedback, linking, associative browsing and targeted searching. The foremost collaborative narratives are constructed in interplay of subjective “telling” and documentary “showing” through experimental decision-making, while sorting, recombining and choosing from existing content. The development of popular narration towards “transmedia storytelling” involving active unraveling and participation of the prosumer using social media tools is still at its beginning. Therefore the “social network narrative” is to be considered as contribution to the scientific analysis and systematization of today’s new narrative strategies and not as a final concept.

A micro Joule-Thomson cold stage was designed, built and tested, as part of the micro cooling research project at the University of Twente. The cold stage consists of a stack of three glass wafers. In the top wafer, the high-pressure line is etched as a rectangular channel with supporting pillars. The high-pressure line ends in a flow restriction and an evaporator volume that crosses the center wafer into the bottom wafer. The bottom wafer contains the low-pressure line, again etched as a rectangular channel containing supporting pillars, thus forming a counter-flow heat exchanger. A design aimed at a net cooling power of 10 mW at 96 K and operating with nitrogen as the working fluid was optimized based on the minimization of entropy production. The optimum cold finger measures 28 mm x 2.2 mm x 0.8 mm (max. dimensions). It should be able to generate a net cooling power of 10 mW at 96 K at a nitrogen flow of 1 mg/s at a high pressure of 80 bar and a low pressure of 6 bar. A batch of 14 prototype coolers were made for 8 different designs, including a design of the theoretical optimum. Liquid nitrogen is collected in the evaporator, and since the low pressure is 6 bar, the temperature should be 96 K. However, due to some thermal resistance in the thermocouple attached to the cold tip, a temperature of 105 K was achieved. A net cooling power of 5 mW was measured. In the paper, the design of the coolers will be discussed along with experimental results.

At the University of Twente, research on the development of a sorption-based micro cooler is in progress. Because of the absence of moving parts, such a cooler is virtually vibration free and highly durable, which potentially results in a long lifetime. A miniature cryogenic cooler with these properties would be appealing in a wide variety of applications including the cooling of vibration-sensitive detectors in space missions, low-noise amplifiers and semi- and superconducting circuitry. The objective of the present project is to scale down a Joule-Thomson (JT) cold stage to a total volume of a few hundredths of a cm3. This size reduction introduces many problems. The proposed cold stage volume results in a restriction cross-sectional area of about a thousandth of a mm2 which may cause clogging problems. Flow channels with a cross-sectional area of a few hundredths of a mm2 will produce high pressure drops influencing the JT cycle. Furthermore, the micro channels must be capable of withstanding high pressures and maintaining a large temperature gradient over a relatively short length. The project aim is to develop a reliable micro JT cold stage that is fabricated out of one material with a relatively simple and reproducible fabrication method. The length of the cold stage is calculated at about 20 mm with a width of 1.7 mm and height of about 0.3 mm. The mass flow is in the order of one mg per second to create a net cooling power of 10 mW at 96 K. The final objective of the project is to integrate the cold stage, vacuum chamber and device into one compact design. This paper discusses possible solutions to the problems mentioned and presents a concept design of such a miniature JT cold stage.

An experimental study of low Reynolds number gas flow across pillars in a microchannel is presented. Various geometries of pillars are considered for systematic comparison. This is for the first time such an investigation is done. The pillars 25 um in diameter and height of 230 um are dry etched in silicon. a 4-point pressure drop measurement setup is used to avoid measuring losses in fittings. Among various geometries considered, shifted sine pattern and rhombus shaped structures with an aspect ratio of 1/3 have the lowest friction factor and circle staggered arrangement has the highest friction factor.

This paper presents the fabrication of a microcooler consisting of small stainless steel sorption compressor cells, micromachined silicon check valves, and a micromachined cold stage that incorporates glass-tube heat exchangers. The design, fabrication and experiments on the different elements are described. Two compressor cells were thermally cycled to investigate the dynamic behaviour. The cold stage could reach a stable temperature of 169 K with a cooling power of about 200 mW.

Cryocoolers are refrigerators capable of reaching temperatures below roughly 120 kelvin. Such coolers are used for cooling of, for instance, superconducting electronics and magnets, (infrared) detectors, and cryopumps. Low-temperature applications requiring very little cooling power, such as a single chip with a low noise amplifier or a superconducting magnetometer, would benefit from very small closed-cycle cryocoolers. Such coolers do not yet exist. This thesis is the result of a research project to investigate opportunities for such microcoolers. The project required a high degree of pioneering because the field of subjects and possibilities is vast and largely unexplored. As a result, the contents of this thesis is very divergent and cover various areas of science, such as (micro)mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and material science. This divergence occurs especially in chapters 2 and 3, in which a number of cooling cycles are discussed, as well as opportunities for miniaturization of these coolers. The remainder of the thesis describes the development of miniature components for a sorption cooler. This cooling system was chosen because it is suitable to be applied on a small scale.
