Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of the optimal structural features in the peacock tail feather. Peacock tail feathers are highly optimized in three respects. The feathers are highly efficient structures that can support their own weight in a deployed position. The feathers are also optimized for producing thin-film colours with a high degree of lustre. The feathers also have a structure which produces intricate patterns with a high degree of aesthetic merit. There are structural features that allow simultaneous optimization in the different areas of performance. In particular, the thin-film sandwich structure is ideal for producing optimal structural performance and optimal optical performance. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper presents performance charts that map the design space of a bio-inspired robotic condylar hinge joint. The joint mimics the design of the human knee joint by copying the condylar surfaces of the femur and tibia and by copying the four-bar motion of the cruciate ligaments. Four aspects of performance are modeled: peak mechanical advantage, RMS (root mean square) mechanical advantage, RMS sliding ratio, and range of movement. The performance of the joint is dependent on the shape of the condylar surfaces and the geometry of the four-bar mechanism. The design space for the condylar hinge joint is large because the four-bar mechanism has a very large number of possible configurations. Also, it is not intuitive what values of design parameters give the best design. Performance graphs are presented that cover over 12,000 different geometries of the four-bar mechanism. The maps are presented on three-dimensional graphs that help designers visualize the limits of performance of the joint and visualize tradeoffs between individual aspects of performance. The maps show that each aspect of performance of the joint is very sensitive to the geometry of the four-bar mechanism. The trends in performance can be understood by analyzing the kinematics of the four-bar mechanism and the shape of the condylar surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a backwards design method for mechanical conceptual design. The method involves starting with a very idealistic semiworking solution and then systematically solving the unworkable parts of the solution until a complete solution is found. The method can work in conjunction with other methods such as Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) or brainstorming. The method tries to exploit the principle that it is easier to critique and modify a design than it is to create a fully working solution in one go. The visual nature of the method means that it is suited to design problems where geometry is important such as mechanism design and machine design. Three case studies of conceptual design are presented. The case studies involve a novel clutch, a novel rotary damping mechanism and a novel worm gearbox. Each of these designs won at least one national design competition in the UK. A simple design experiment has been carried out which indicated that the backwards design method was at least as effective as the morphological chart method for a simple machine design exercise. Despite significant interest for over a decade in developing micro air vehicles (MAVs) that mimic the flight performance exhibited by insects, no design has achieved this challenge. This has principally been due to limitations in actuation devices, which have resulted in constrained flapping motions that require conventional rudder and aileron control surfaces. Recent advances in "artificial muscle" actuation technologies mean that reproducing the complex wing kinematics of insects with sufficient power density for MAV flight has become feasible. Consequently, there is a need to analyse the wing kinematics of insects and how they are modulated for controlled, manoeuvrable flight. It is also important to understand how wing kinematics affect the unsteady aerodynamic mechanisms that crucially augment lift and thrust force production. In this paper a biomimetic analysis of insect wing kinematics based on established biological literature is presented, that aims to aid the development of agile and controllable flapping MAVs. The transverse dynamic force microscope (TDFM) and its shear force sensing principle permit true noncontact force detection in contrast to typical atomic force microscopes. The two TDFM measurement signals for the cantilever allow, in principle, two different scanning modes of which, in particular, the second presented here permits a full-scale noncontact scan. Previous research work mainly focused on developing the sensing mechanism, whereas this paper investigates the vertical axis dynamics for advanced robust closed-loop control. This paper presents a new TDFM digital control solution, built on field-programmable gate array equipment running at high implementation frequencies. The integrated control system allows the implementation of online customizable controllers, and raster scans in two modes at very high detection bandwidth and nanoprecision. Robust control algorithms are designed, implemented, and practically assessed. In this paper, the problem of estimating the shear force affecting the tip of the cantilever in a Transverse Dynamic Force Microscope (TDFM) using a real-time implementable sliding mode observer is addressed. The behaviour of a vertically oriented oscillated cantilever, in close proximity to a specimen surface, facilitates the imaging of the specimen at nano-metre scale. Distance changes between the cantilever tip and the specimen can be inferred from the oscillation amplitudes, but also from the shear force acting at the tip. Thus, the problem of accurately estimating the shear force is of significance when specimen images and mechanical properties need to be obtained at submolecular precision. A low order dynamic model of the cantilever is derived using the method of lines, for the purpose of estimating the shear force. Based on this model, an estimator using sliding mode techniques is presented to reconstruct the unknown shear force, from only tip position measurements and knowledge of the excitation signal applied to the top of the cantilever. Comparisons to methods assuming a quasi-static harmonic balance are made. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
