Search

The Astropy Project supports and fosters the development of open-source and openly-developed Python packages that provide commonly needed functionality to the astronomical community. A key element of the Astropy Project is the core package $\texttt{astropy}$, which serves as the foundation for more specialized projects and packages. In this article, we summarize key features in the core package as of the recent major release, version 5.0, and provide major updates for the Project. We then discuss supporting a broader ecosystem of interoperable packages, including connections with several astronomical observatories and missions. We also revisit the future outlook of the Astropy Project and the current status of Learn Astropy. We conclude by raising and discussing the current and future challenges facing the Project., Comment: 43 pages, 5 figures. To appear in ApJ. Cluster-central gigahertz peak and compact steep spectrum (CSS) sources offer an opportunity to study the earliest phases of AGN feedback, but few have yet been examined in detail. We present results from radio and X-ray observations of 1321+045, a CSS source in a 4.4 keV cluster at z=0.263. The cluster has a strongly cooling core, and disturbances from a minor cluster merger may have triggered a period of jet activity which formed the 16 kpc radio lobes 2.0 [+0.3,-0.2] Myr ago. However, new VLBA imaging shows a ~20 pc jet on a different projected axis, which is probably only a few hundred years old. We consider possible histories for the system, with either one or two periods of jet activity. The radio galaxy 1321+045 is a rare example of a young, compact steep spectrum source located in the center of a z=0.263 galaxy cluster. Using a combination of Chandra, VLBA, VLA, MERLIN and IRAM 30m observations, we investigate the conditions which have triggered this outburst. We find that the previously identified 5 kpc scale radio lobes are probably no longer powered by the AGN, which seems to have launched a new ~20 pc jet on a different axis, likely within the last few hundred years. We estimate the enthalpy of the lobes to be 8.48 [+6.04,-3.56] x10^57 erg, only sufficient to balance cooling in the surrounding 16 kpc for ~9 Myr. The cluster ICM properties are similar to those of rapidly cooling nearby clusters, with a low central entropy (8.6 [+2.2,-1.4] kev cm^2 within 8 kpc), short central cooling time (390 [+170,-150] Myr), and t_cool/t_ff and t_cool/t_eddy ratios indicative of thermal instability out to ~45 kpc. Despite previous detection of Halpha emission from the BCG, our IRAM 30m observations do not detect CO emission in either the (1-0) or (3-2) transitions. We place 3sigma limits on the molecular gas mass of M_mol <=7.7x10^9 Msol and <=5.6x10^9 Msol from the two lines respectively. We find indications of a recent minor cluster merger which has left a ~200 kpc tail of stripped gas in the ICM, and probably induced sloshing motions., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ, v2 updates references and corrects minor typographical errors identified at the proof stage

X-ray binaries exhibit a wide range of properties but there are few accepted methods to determine the nature of the compact object. Color-Color-Intensity diagrams have been suggested as a means of distinguishing between systems containing black holes from those containing neutron stars. However, this technique has been verified with data from only one instrument (RXTE/ASM) with a single set of X-ray colors defined using data available only in pre-determined energy bands. We test a selection of X-ray colors with a more sensitive instrument to determine the reliability of this method. We use data from the MAXI Gas Slit Camera, which allows users to specify energy-bands. We test X-ray colors that have been previously defined in the literature as well as ones that we define specifically in this paper. A representative set of systems are used to construct Color-Color-Intensity diagrams in each set of colors to determine which are best for separating different classes. For studying individual sources certain bands are more effective than others. For a specified energy range, the separation of soft states in black hole binaries was possible only where both soft and hard colors included information from the lowest energy band. We confirm that Color-Color-Intensity diagrams can distinguish between systems containing black holes or neutron stars in all X-ray colors tested; this suggests an universality in the accretion processes governing these different classes. We suggest possible physical processes driving different classes of X-ray binaries to different locations in Color-Color-Intensity diagrams., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures. Accepted in New Astronomy

We present deep Chandra, XMM-Newton, Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and Halpha observations of the group-group merger NGC 6338. X-ray imaging and spectral mapping show that as well as trailing tails of cool, enriched gas, the two cool cores are embedded in an extensive region of shock heated gas with temperatures rising to ~5 keV. The velocity distribution of the member galaxies show that the merger is occurring primarily along the line of sight, and we estimate that the collision has produced shocks of Mach number M=2.3 or greater, making this one of the most violent mergers yet observed between galaxy groups. Both cool cores host potential AGN cavities and Halpha nebulae, indicating rapid radiative cooling. In the southern cool core around NGC 6338, we find that the X-ray filaments associated with the Halpha nebula have low entropies (<10 kev cm^2) and short cooling times (~200-300 Myr). In the northern core we identify an Halpha cloud associated with a bar of dense, cool X-ray gas offset from the dominant galaxy. We find no evidence of current jet activity in either core. Observations of young open clusters show a bimodal distribution of rotation periods that has been difficult to explain with existing stellar spin-down models. Detailed MHD stellar wind simulations have demonstrated that surface magnetic field morphology has a strong influence on wind-driven angular momentum loss. Observations suggest that faster rotating stars store a larger fraction of their magnetic flux in higher-order multipolar components of the magnetic field. In this work, we present a new model for stellar spin-down that, for the first time, accounts for the stellar surface magnetic field configuration. We show how a magnetic complexity that evolves from complex toward simple configurations as a star spins down can explain the salient features of stellar rotation evolution, including the bimodal distribution of both slow and fast rotators seen in young open clusters., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to appear in ApJ

The H2O Southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS) has mapped 100 square degrees of the Galactic plane for water masers and thermal molecular line emission using the 22-m Mopra telescope. We describe the automated spectral-line fitting pipelines used to determine the properties of emission detected in HOPS datacubes, and use these to derive the physical and kinematic properties of gas in the survey. A combination of the angular resolution, sensitivity, velocity resolution and high critical density of lines targeted make the HOPS data cubes ideally suited to finding precursor clouds to the most massive and dense stellar clusters in the Galaxy. We compile a list of the most massive HOPS ammonia regions and investigate whether any may be young massive cluster progenitor gas clouds. HOPS is also ideally suited to trace the flows of dense gas in the Galactic Centre. We find the kinematic structure of gas within the inner 500pc of the Galaxy is consistent with recent predictions for the dynamical evolution of gas flows in the centre of the Milky Way. We confirm a recent finding that the dense gas in the inner 100pc has an oscillatory kinematic structure with characteristic length scale of ~20pc, and also identify similar oscillatory kinematic structure in the gas at radii larger than 100pc. Finally, we make all of the above fits and the remaining HOPS data cubes across the 100 square degrees of the survey available to the community., Comment: 53 pages, 34 figures, 4 tables. We present the first public version (v0.2) of the open-source and community-developed Python package, Astropy. This package provides core astronomy-related functionality to the community, including support for domain-specific file formats such as Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) files, Virtual Observatory (VO) tables, and common ASCII table formats, unit and physical quantity conversions, physical constants specific to astronomy, celestial coordinate and time transformations, world coordinate system (WCS) support, generalized containers for representing gridded as well as tabular data, and a framework for cosmological transformations and conversions. Significant functionality is under active development, such as a model fitting framework, VO client and server tools, and aperture and point spread function (PSF) photometry tools. The core development team is actively making additions and enhancements to the current code base, and we encourage anyone interested to participate in the development of future Astropy versions., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. We report results from our deep Chandra X-ray observations of a nearby radio galaxy, 4C+29.30 (z=0.0647). The Chandra image resolves structures on sub-arcsec to arcsec scales, revealing complex X-ray morphology and detecting the main radio features: the nucleus, a jet, hotspots, and lobes. The nucleus is absorbed (N(H)=3.95 (+0.27/-0.33)x10^23 atoms/cm^2) with an unabsorbed luminosity of L(2-10 keV) ~ (5.08 +/-0.52) 10^43 erg/s characteristic of Type 2 AGN. Regions of soft (<2 keV) X-ray emission that trace the hot interstellar medium (ISM) are correlated with radio structures along the main radio axis indicating a strong relation between the two. The X-ray emission beyond the radio source correlates with the morphology of optical line-emitting regions. We measured the ISM temperature in several regions across the galaxy to be kT ~ 0.5 with slightly higher temperatures (of a few keV) in the center and in the vicinity of the radio hotspots. Assuming these regions were heated by weak shocks driven by the expanding radio source, we estimated the corresponding Mach number of 1.6 in the southern regions. The thermal pressure of the X-ray emitting gas in the outermost regions suggest the hot ISM is slightly under-pressured with respect to the cold optical-line emitting gas and radio-emitting plasma, which both seem to be in a rough pressure equilibrium. We conclude that 4C+29.30 displays a complex view of interactions between the jet-driven radio outflow and host galaxy environment, signaling feedback processes closely associated with the central active nucleus., Comment: ApJ in press

We present the first results from a new, deep (200ks) Chandra observation of the X-ray luminous galaxy cluster surrounding the powerful (L ~10^47 erg/s), high-redshift (z=1.067), compact-steep-spectrum radio-loud quasar 3C186. The diffuse X-ray emission from the cluster has a roughly ellipsoidal shape and extends out to radii of at least ~60 arcsec (~500 kpc). The centroid of the diffuse X-ray emission is offset by 0.68(+/-0.11) arcsec (5.5+/-0.9 kpc) from the position of the quasar. We measure a cluster mass within the radius at which the mean enclosed density is 2500 times the critical density, r_2500=283(+18/-13)kpc, of 1.02 (+0.21/-0.14)x10^14 M_sun. The gas mass fraction within this radius is f_gas=0.129(+0.015/-0.016). This value is consistent with measurements at lower redshifts and implies minimal evolution in the f_gas(z) relation for hot, massive clusters at 01. We measure cooling times for the X-ray emitting gas at radii of 50 kpc and 25 kpc of 1.7(+/-0.2)x10^9 years and 7.5(+/-2.6)x 10^8 years, as well as a nominal cooling rate (in the absence of heating) of 400(+/-190)M_sun/year within the central 100 kpc. In principle, the cooling gas can supply enough fuel to support the growth of the supermassive black hole and to power the luminous quasar. The radiative power of the quasar exceeds by a factor of 10 the kinematic power of the central radio source, suggesting that radiative heating may be important at intermittent intervals in cluster cores., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, ApJ in press

We present experimental measurements of photodesorption from ices of astrophysical relevance. Layers of benzene and water ice were irradiated with a laser tuned to an electronic transition in the benzene molecule. The translational energy of desorbed molecules was measured by time-of-flight (ToF) mass spectrometry. Three distinct photodesorption processes were identified - a direct adsorbate-mediated desorption producing benzene molecules with a translational temperature of around 1200 K, an indirect adsorbate-mediated desorption resulting in water molecules with a translational temperature of around 450 K, and a substrate-mediated desorption of both benzene and water producing molecules with translational temperatures of around 530 K and 450 K respectively. The translational temperature of each population of desorbed molecules is well above the temperature of the ice matrix. We report the Chandra discovery of an X-ray cluster at redshift z = 1.063 associated with the Compact Steep Spectrum radio loud quasar 3C 186 (Q0740+380). Diffuse X-ray emission is detected out to ~120 kpc from the quasar and contains 741+/-40 net counts. The X-ray spectrum of the extended emission shows strong Fe-line emission (EW=412eV) at the quasar redshift and confirms the thermal nature of this diffuse component. We measure a cluster temperature of 5.2(+1.2/-0.9) keV and an X-ray luminosity L(0.5-2 keV) ~ 6e44 erg/sec, which are in agreement with the luminosity-temperature relation for high-redshift clusters. This is the first detection of a bright X-ray cluster around a luminous (L_bol ~1e47 erg/sec) CSS quasar at high redshift and only the fifth z>1 X-ray cluster detected. We find that the CSS radio source is highly overpressured with respect to the thermal cluster medium by about 3 orders of magnitude. This provides direct observational evidence that the radio source is not thermally confined as posited in the ``frustrated'' scenario for CSS sources. Instead, it appears that the radio source may be young and we are observing it at an early stage of its evolution. In that case the radio source could supply the energy into the cluster and potentially prevent its cooling., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, figures 2, 3a,3b in gif format. ApJ in press

(abridged) We present a study based on XMM data of RX J0256.5+0006, a medium distant (z=0.36) galaxy cluster found in the Bright SHARC catalog. The intracluster medium shows a bimodal structure: one main cluster component and a substructure in the west. Despite the indication of interaction we do not find any sign of temperature gradients. Due to the non-symmetric form of the main cluster we extract surface brightness profiles in different sectors around its centre. We see large variations between the profiles, which we quantify by beta-model fitting. The corresponding r_c's vary between 0.1-0.5Mpc and the beta's between 0.5-1.2. The variations of the beta-model parameters indicate that the main cluster is not entirely relaxed. This hypothesis is strengthened by the fact that the cluster is over-luminous with respect to the (z-evolving) L_x-T relation found for nearby clusters. Comparing our profiles to the reference emission measure profile of Arnaud et al., we find that only the profile extracted north-east (NE) of the main cluster centre is similar to this reference profile. This indicates that only the NE profile is representative for the relaxed part of this cluster component. Using this profile and the spectroscopically fitted temperature of T=4.9^+0.5_-0.4keV we find M_500~4 10^14 solar masses. This value is in agreement with the value obtained using the z-evolving M_500-T relation from the HIFLUGCS sample. For the gas mass fraction we find f_g~18-20% which is in good agreement with other work. We also develop a simple on-axis merger model for the cluster. Together with a simple ram pressure model we find that the most likely physical distance of the subcluster to the main cluster lies between 0.6

We describe the properties of a sample of galaxy groups with very unusual distributions of galaxy luminosities. The most extreme example has an X-ray luminosity similar to that of the Virgo cluster but has a very low richness, with only one galaxy brighter than L*, compared with six in Virgo. That one galaxy, however, is optically more luminous than any galaxy in Virgo and has an optical luminosity as bright as many of the central cD galaxies in rich Abell clusters. The characteristic feature of the fossil groups we study is that most of the light arises from one dominant, central galaxy. We define a fossil system and, based on this definition, construct a small X-ray selected, flux-limited sample of fossil groups with well known selection criteria. We confirm that these systems are indeed groups of galaxies, but dominated by one central luminous giant elliptical galaxy and with few, or no, L* galaxies. We find that fossil systems represent 8%-20% of all systems of the same X-ray luminosity. Fossil groups are at least as numerous as all poor and rich clusters combined, and are thus a possible site for the formation of luminous central cluster galaxies before infall into clusters occurs. The fossil systems in our sample have significantly higher X-ray luminosities than normal groups of similar total optical luminosities (or similar X-ray temperature, where the latter can be measured). These enhanced X-ray luminosities may be due to relatively cool gas in the innermost regions or due to a low central gas entropy. We interpret fossil groups as old, undisturbed systems which have avoided infall into clusters, but where galaxy merging of most of the L* galaxies has occurred. We investigate the evolution of the universal rest-frame ultraviolet luminosity density from z = 1.5 to the present. We analyze an extensive sample of multicolor data (U', B, V = 24.5) plus spectroscopic redshifts from the Hawaii Survey Fields and the Hubble Deep Field. Our multicolor data allow us to select our sample in the rest-frame ultraviolet (2500 angstrom) over the entire redshift range to z = 1.5. We conclude that the evolution in the luminosity density is a function of the form (1+z)^{1.7\pm1.0} for a flat lambda cosmology and (1+z)^{2.4\pm1.0} for an Einstein-de Sitter cosmology., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figs, 5 tables, submitted to AJ

We present initial results from a wide-field, multi-colour imaging project, designed to study galaxy evolution in X-ray selected clusters at intermediate (z~0.25) and high redshifts (z~0.5). In this paper we give blue galaxy fractions from eight X-ray selected clusters, drawn from a combined sample of three X-ray surveys. We find that all the clusters exhibit excess blue galaxy populations over the numbers observed in local systems, though a large scatter is present in the results. We find no significant correlation of blue fraction with redshift at z>0.2 although the large scatter could mask a positive trend. We also find no systematic trend of blue fraction with X-ray luminosity. We show that the blue fraction is a function of (a) radius within a cluster, (b) absolute magnitude and (c) the passbands used to measure the colour. We find that our blue fractions (f_b) from galaxy colours close to restframe (U-B), f_b~0.4, are systematically higher than those from restframe (B-V) colours, f_b~0.2. We conclude this effect is real, may offer a partial explanation of the widely differing levels of blue fraction found in previous studies and may have implications for biases in optical samples selected in different bands. While the increasing blue fraction with radius can be interpreted as evidence of cluster infall of field galaxies, the exact physical processes which these galaxies undergo is unclear. We estimate that, in the cores of the more massive clusters, galaxies should be experiencing ram--pressure stripping of galactic gas by the intra--cluster medium. The fact that our low X-ray luminosity systems show a similar blue fraction as the high luminosity systems, as well as a significant blue fraction gradient with radius, implies other physical effects are also important., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The abundance of high-redshift galaxy clusters depends sensitively on the matter density $\OmM$ and, to a lesser extent, on the cosmological constant $\Lambda$. Measurements of this abundance therefore constrain these fundamental cosmological parameters, and in a manner independent and complementary to other methods, such as observations of the cosmic microwave background and distance measurements. Cluster abundance is best measured by the X-ray temperature function, as opposed to luminosity, because temperature and mass are tightly correlated, as demonstrated by numerical simulations. Taking advantage of the sensitivity of XMM-Newton, our Guaranteed Time program aims at measuring the temperature of the highest redshift (z>0.4) SHARC clusters, with the ultimate goal of constraining both $\OmM$ and $\Lambda$., Comment: To appear in the Proceedings of the XXI Moriond Conference: Galaxy Clusters and the High Redshift Universe Observed in X-rays, edited by D. We present results from a Chandra X-ray Observatory study of the field X-ray source populations in 4 different observations: two high-redshift (z~0.5) clusters of galaxies 3C295 and RXJ003033.2+261819; and two non-cluster fields with similar exposure time. Surprisingly, the 0.5-2 keV source surface densities (~900-1200 sources deg**-2 at a flux limit of 1.5x10**-15 erg cm**-2s**-1) measured in an ~8'x8' area surrounding each cluster exceed by a factor of ~2 the value expected on the basis of the ROSAT and Chandra logN-logS, with a significance of ~2 sigma each, or ~3.5 sigma when the 2 fields are combined (i.e. a probability to be a statistical fluctuation of <1% and <0.04%, respectively). The same analysis performed on the non-cluster fields and on the outer chips of the cluster fields does NOT show evidence of such an excess. In both cluster fields, the summed 0.5-10 keV spectrum of the detected objects is well fitted by a power-law with Gamma~1.7 similar to AGNs and shows no sign of intrinsic absorption. The few (~10 out of 35) optical identifications available to date confirm that most of them are, as expected, AGNs but the number of redshifts available is too small to allow conclusions on their nature. We discuss possible interpretations of the overdensity in terms of: a statistical variation of Cosmic Background sources; a concentration of AGNs and/or powerful starburst galaxies associated with the clusters; and g ravitational lensing of background QSO's by the galaxy clusters. All explanations are however difficult to reconcile with the large number of excess sources detected. The K-band Hubble diagram of Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs) is presented for a large, X-ray selected cluster sample extending out to z = 0.8. The controversy over the degree of BCG evolution is shown to be due to sample selection, since the BCG luminosity depends upon the cluster environment. Selecting only the most X-ray luminous clusters produces a BCG sample which shows, under the assumption of an Einstein-de Sitter cosmology, significantly less mass growth than that predicted by current semi-analytic galaxy formation models, and significant evidence of any growth only if the dominant stellar population of the BCGs formed relatively recently (z <= 2.6)., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL. 4 pages including 4 figures, uses emulateapj.sty (included)

We use Chandra data to map the gas temperature in the central region of the merging cluster A2142. The cluster is markedly nonisothermal; it appears that the central cooling flow has been disturbed but not destroyed by a merger. The X-ray image exhibits two sharp, bow-shaped, shock-like surface brightness edges or gas density discontinuities. However, temperature and pressure profiles across these edges indicate that these are not shock fronts. The pressure is reasonably continuous across these edges, while the entropy jumps in the opposite sense to that in a shock (i.e. the denser side of the edge has lower temperature, and hence lower entropy). Most plausibly, these edges delineate the dense subcluster cores that have survived a merger and ram pressure stripping by the surrounding shock-heated gas., Comment: Latex, 9 pages, 5 figures (including color), uses emulateapj.sty. We present the Bright SHARC (Serendipitous High-Redshift Archival ROSAT Cluster) Survey, which is an objective search for serendipitously detected extended X-ray sources in 460 deep ROSAT PSPC pointings. The Bright SHARC Survey covers an area of 178.6 sq.deg and has yielded 374 extended sources. We discuss the X-ray data reduction, the candidate selection and present results from our on-going optical follow-up campaign. The optical follow-up concentrates on the brightest 94 of the 374 extended sources and is now 97% complete. We have identified thirty-seven clusters of galaxies, for which we present redshifts and luminosities. The clusters span a redshift range of 0.0696

We present here initial results on the X-ray Cluster Luminosity Function (XCLF) from the Bright SHARC sample of distant X-ray clusters of galaxies. This sample is 97% complete in its optical identifications and contains 12 X-ray luminous clusters in the range 0.3 < z < 0.83 (median z = 0.42) and 1.1 < Lx(44) < 8.5 erg/s [0.5-2.0 keV]. We present a preliminary selection function for the Bright SHARC based on Monte Carlo simulations. Using this selection function, we have computed the Bright SHARC XCLF and find it to be fully consistent with a non-evolving XCLF to Lx(44) = 5 erg/s and z = 0.7. At Lx(44) > 5 erg/s, we find evidence for a deficit of clusters compared to that expected from a non-evolving XCLF. We detect only one such cluster in the redshift range 0.3 < z < 0.7 when we would expect 4.9 clusters based on the local XCLF of De Grandi et al. (1999). The statistical significance of this deficit is 96%. To increase the statistical significance of this possible deficit, we have combined the Bright SHARC and the 160 sq. deg. survey of Vikhlinin et al (1998a). This joint survey covers 260 sq. degs. and contains only one confirmed 0.3 < z < 0.7, Lx(44) > 5 erg/s cluster, while we would expect 7.6 such clusters based on the local XCLF (De Grandi et al. 1999). The statistical significance of the deficit in this joint survey increases to 99.5%. From the Press-Schechter mass function and the empirical X-ray cluster luminosity-temperature (L-T) relation, we construct an X-ray cluster luminosity function that can be applied to the growing number of high-redshift, X-ray cluster luminosity catalogs to constrain cosmological parameters. In this paper, we apply this luminosity function to the Einstein Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS) and the ROSAT Brightest Cluster Sample (BCS) luminosity function to constrain the value of Omega_m. In the case of the EMSS, we find a factor of 4 - 5 fewer X-ray clusters at redshifts above z = 0.4 than below this redshift at luminosities above L_X = 7 x 10^44 erg s^-1 (0.3 - 3.5 keV), which suggests that the X-ray cluster luminosity function has evolved above L_*. At lower luminosities, this luminosity function evolves only minimally, if at all. Using Bayesian inference, we find that the degree of evolution at high luminosities suggests that Omega_m = 0.96(+0.36,-0.32), given the best-fit L-T relation of Reichart, Castander, & Nichol (1998). When we account for the uncertainty in how the empirical L-T relation evolves with redshift, we find that Omega_m is approximately 1.0 +/- 0.4. We present the z = 0.3 - 0.7 cluster X-ray luminosity function (XLF) determined from the Southern SHARC (Serendipitous High-redshift Archival ROSAT Cluster) survey. Over the luminosity range L ~ (0.3 - 3) x 10^44 erg/s (0.5 - 2.0 keV) the XLF is in close agreement with that of the low redshift X-ray cluster population. We report on the first results from a redshift survey of a flux-limited sample of X-ray clusters selected serendipitously from the ROSAT PSPC data archive. We spectroscopically confirm 15 clusters in the range 0.3 < z < 0.7, to a flux limit of ~ 3.9 x 10^-14 erg s^-1 cm^-2, over a survey area of 17.2 deg^2. The surface density of clusters in our survey is 2.0 (+0.4,-0.3) deg^-2, in good agreement with the number density of cluster candidates detected using algorithms designed to search for very extended sources. The number of clusters detected between 0.3 < z < 0.7 is consistent with a prediction based on a simple extrapolation of the local X-ray cluster luminosity function, which indicates that over this redshift range no significant evolution in the cluster population has taken place. (Shortened Abstract) We present new X-ray data taken from the ROSAT PSPC pointing archive for 21 clusters in the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS). We have supplemented these data with new optical follow-up observations found in the literature and overall, 32 of the original 67 z>0.14 EMSS clusters now have new information. Using this improved EMSS sample, we have re-determined the EMSS X-ray Cluster Luminosity Function as a function of redshift. We have removed potential mis-classifications and included our new measurements of the clusters X-ray luminosities and redshifts. We find similar luminosity functions to those originally presented by Henry etal (1992); albeit with two important differences. First, we show that the original low redshift EMSS luminosity function is insufficiently constrained. Secondly, the power law shape of our new determination of the high redshift EMSS luminosity function (z=0.3 to 0.6) has a shallower slope than that seen by Henry etal. We have quantified the degree of evolution seen in the X-ray cluster luminosity using several statistical tests. The most restrictive analysis indicates that our low and high redshift EMSS luminosity functions are statistically different at only the 95% level. However, other tests indicate that these luminosity functions differ by as little as one sigma. These data are therefore, consistent with no evolution in the X-ray cluster luminosity function out to z=0.5., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. Latex. Accepted for publication in ApJ. We report on the progress of our search for serendipitous distant X-ray galaxy clusters in the ROSAT PSPC pointed observations archive. The initial aim of our work is to measure the X-ray luminosity function of clusters down to 4 x 10^-14 erg cm^-2 s^-1 and so test the claims of cluster evolution at moderate redshifts. We have R band images and spectroscopy for 45 extended sources detected in 50 of the 100 deepest southern fields. A preliminary analysis suggests we cover a range of distances, from nearby clusters to possible distant clusters, z \simeq 1.0., Comment: 2 pages, including 1 Postscript figure.
