Since the beginning of the LHC commissioning, harmonics of 50 Hz have been observed in the beam spectrum. Several observations during the 2018 proton run show that these harmonics are the result of a real beam excitation, rather than an artifact of the instrumentation system. As many of these components reside in the vicinity of the betatron tune, their presence can complicate the tune measurement and tracking during operation and potentially lead to beam losses and emittance growth. This note summarizes the program of the first LHC Machine Development (MD) (Fills 7342 and 7343) dedicated to the investigation of this effect. The aim of this study is to reproduce some of the observations acquired during End-of-Fill experiments and parasitic observations, as well as to simulate the impact of dipolar noise on the beam with controlled ADT excitations.

This report discusses the feasibility and limitations for operating the LHC and HL-LHC at the ultimate beam energy of 7.5 TeV, corresponding to a main dipole magnetic field of 8.93 T and an operating current of 12748 A.

The new 20 kA, 80 V power supply for the main magnet of the 520 MeV H⁻ Cyclotron at TRIUMF was awarded to OCEM. It has replaced the original system (commissioned in 1976) based on a series pass regulator. The final acceptance tests have demonstrated the com-pliance with the project specifications, especially for the high current stability required for the Cyclotron operation. The current stability is ±5 ppm, including current ripple, for a period of more than 8 hours of continuous operation. In addition, the magnetic field can be further stabilized us-ing feedback of a flux loop signal. OCEM designed the power supply to use the third gen-eration of Function Generator/Controller (FGC3) control electronics from CERN. This was chosen to obtain the high current stability required by TRIUMF. This collaboration was facilitated through a Knowledge Transfer agreement between CERN and OCEM. The power supply commis-sioning has been performed as a collaboration between OCEM, TRIUMF and CERN. This is the first report of a three volume study on the full energy exploitation of the LHC. The report summaries the necessary preparations and consolidation work and the potential performance reach for operating the LHC at its nominal beam energy of 7TeV.

At CERN the Electrical Power Converter group is re-sponsible for the design and exploitation of more than 5000 power systems throughout the accelerator complex, powering predominantly magnet circuits, in addition to RF and electro-static systems. Currently, a variety of systems are in operation, in some cases these are over 30 years old. Furthermore, the group must maintain operationally a total of six hardware platforms, each with dedicated software. In light of this, a consolidation roadmap has been determined to rejuvenate the power converter complex and to reduce the total number of control platforms. We present a first rough estimate for the electrical power consumption of the FCC-ee lepton collider. This electrical power is dominated by the RF system, which provides the motivation for the ongoing R&D on highly efficient RF power sources. Other contributions come from the warm arc magnets, the cryogenics systems, cooling, ventilation, general services, the particle-physics detectors, and the injector complex., Proceedings of the 7th Int. The paper presents the efforts of CERN to optimize its energy usage. Work is proceeding in 3 areas: accelerators, campus and infrastructure, and re-use of thermal “waste” energy. The accelerator chain has the potential to further reduce the energy consumption by dynamic suppression of cycles when they are temporarily not needed and by operating magnets in pulsed mode. R&D; for future accelerators includes the recuperation of the RF energy, which is not used for acceleration of the beams. Concerning the CERN campus more than half of the buildings are older than 40 years. Hence there is a big need for renovation, which includes energy aspects. New buildings use renewable energy whenever possible. As an example a building is under construction, which will use a 250 m2 solar field together with an absorption refrigerator for cooling purposes. Finally, about 80% of the electric energy gets dissipated in air cooling towers. Part of this energy can be re-used for heating buildings.

Le Synchrotron à proton (PS) du CERN est un accélérateur de particules mis en service en 1959. Aujourd’hui, il est plus que jamais un élément essentiel de la chaine des accélérateurs du CERN. Il reçoit les protons d’un pré-accélérateur à une énergie de 1.4GeV et il les accélère jusqu’à 25GeV. Les cycles d’accélération durent 1.2 ou 2.4 secondes et s’enchainent les uns à la suite des autres, 5000 heures par an. Cent un aimants sont répartis sur les six cents mètres de circonférence de la machine et créent un champ magnétique qui permet de conserver les protons sur la trajectoire circulaire de la machine. Ils sont tous connectés en série et alimentés par un seul convertisseur de puissance. En réalité, ce convertisseur est un système de puissance complexe comprenant un groupe tournant de 90MVA. Ce groupe est en service depuis 1968 et après plus de 200 millions de cycles, montre des signes de fatigue. Une nouvelle alimentation prendra bientôt la relève. La solution retenue est une solution innovante qui est basée sur des convertisseurs statiques associés à des bancs de condensateurs comme réservoir d’énergie locale. Cette nouvelle technologie a été développée par le CERN et réalisée par l’entreprise CONVERTEAM.

This report sums up in two volumes the first 50 years of operation of the CERN Proton Synchrotron. After an introduction on the genesis of the machine, and a description of its magnet and powering systems, the first volume focuses on some of the many innovations in accelerator physics and instrumentation that it has pioneered, such as transition crossing, RF gymnastics, extractions, phase space tomography, or transverse emittance measurement by wire scanners. The second volume describes the other machines in the PS complex: the proton linear accelerators, the PS Booster, the LEP pre-injector, the heavy-ion linac and accumulator, and the antiproton rings.

The working point of the CERN Proton Synchrotron, which is equipped with combined function magnets, is controlled using pole-face-windings. Each main magnet consists of one focusing and one de-focusing half-unit on which four pole-face-winding plates are mounted containing two separate coils each, called narrow and wide. At present they are connected in series, but can be powered independently. In addition, a winding called the figure-of-eight loop, contours the pole faces and crosses between the two half units, generating opposite fields in each half-unit. The four optical parameters, horizontal and vertical tune and chromaticity, are adjusted by acting on the pole-face-winding currents in both half units and in the figure-of-eight loop, leaving one physical quantity free. The power supply consolidation project opened the opportunity to use five independent power supplies, to adjust the four parameters plus an additional degree of freedom. This paper presents the results of the measurements that have been made in the five-current mode together with the influence of the magnetic nonlinearities, due to the unbalance in the narrow and wide winding currents, on the beam dynamics.

Since 2001 considerable effort has been devoted to the study of a possible replacement of the continuous-transfer extraction mode from the PS to the SPS. Such an approach, called Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE), is based on capture of the beam inside stable islands of transverse phase space, generated by sextupoles and octupoles, thanks to a properly chosen tune variation. Both numerical simulations and measurements with beam were performed to understand the properties of this new extraction mode. The experimental study was completed at the end of 2004 and by the end of 2005 a scheme to implement this novel approach in the PS machine was defined and its performance assessed. This design report presents the outcome of the studies undertaken both in terms of technical issues as well as of resources necessary to implement the proposed scheme.

Since the year 2001 considerable efforts were devoted to the study of a possible replacement of the Continuous Transfer (CT) extraction mode from the PS to the SPS. Such an approach is based on the use of stable islands of phase space, generated by sextupoles and octupoles, to capture the beam inside, thanks to a properly chosen tune variation. Both numerical simulations and measurements with beam were performed to understand the properties of this new extraction mode. Recently, a Study Group was set-up with the mandate of studying this novel extraction in view of using it as a replacement for the CT, as well as technical issues related with this approach. The results of the analysis carried out so far, and the conclusions of the Study Group are presented and discussed in this report.

Particle accelerators, like the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), make use of true bipolar power converters to feed superconducting magnets. Moreover, the LHC imposes that most converters must be installed underground. This constraint leads to the necessity of a high efficiency and a reduced volume for all the power converters. In this paper, the authors present a novel four-quadrant topology composed by an association of a ZVS-inverter and a ZCS-rectifier. This DC-AC-DC converter is fully reversible and a soft-switching operation mode is achieved for all switches over the full operating range. After a thorough analysis of the prototype design [±600A, ±10V], simulation and experimental results confirm the general performance of this power structure.

The feeding device enables a charge (1) to be fed with relatively weak medium power on the one hand, and strong power points on the other, due to energy storage condensers (21) placed in a series. Each of said energy storage condensers (21) is linked to an DC/DC converter (20, 200), with control methods (5) being provided to equalize the power at the condenser terminals in addition to the power delivered by each one.

The FCC study commissioned a feasibility analysis for the supply with electricity from renewable sources to two companies who regularly carry out such investigations, McKinseyand Accenture. This report summarises the results of this analysis and provides details about the assumptions, the supply scenarios, and the options to supply an FCC with renewable energy one a long time scale.

Le présent rapport résume la méthode adoptée par le groupe de l’étude FCC pour élaborer un scénario d’emplacement équilibré selon les trois piliers du projet 1) l’excellence scientifique, 2) la compatibilité territoriale et 3) les risques liés à la mise en œuvre du projet. Il décrit les exigences et les contraintes du processus d’élaboration d’un scénario et illustre par des exemples concrets la manière dont elles sont prises en compte lors de la détermination de la configuration et de l’emplacement. Le présent rapport montre également l’évolution du scénario étudié, entre le début de l’étude exploratoire en 2014 et la proposition d’un scénario de base pour l’emplacement en 2021. Ce scénario optimisé servira de référence pour approfondir les diverses composantes de l’étude de faisabilité (par exemple, études de la stabilité souterraine, propositions d’accès au site pendant les phases de construction et d’exploitation, scénarios pour la fourniture d’électricité et d’eau, approches pour la gestion des matériaux excavés, développement de potentiels de synergie locale, questions d’intégration paysagère, propositions de mesures d’accompagnement et de compensation). Après huit années de travaux d’étude par une équipe multidisciplinaire d'environ 100 membres, il apparaît que le scénario le plus équilibré est celui d’un collisionneur circulaire d’une circonférence de l’ordre de 91 km, comprenant huit sites de surface. Le processus d’élaboration itératif des scénarios est documenté dans le présent document. L’existence d’une communauté d’utilisateurs suffisamment importante s’engageant à exploiter l’infrastructure pendant plusieurs décennies est une condition préalable pour justifier une telle infrastructure de recherche. Les scénarios prévoyant un collisionneur nettement plus petit, c’est-à-dire d’une circonférence inférieure à 90 km, ne répondent pas aux exigences de performance d’un tel programme de recherche devant attirer une masse critique de scientifiques. Les propositions d’emplacement territorial adapté à des scénarios prévoyant un collisionneur d’une circonférence nettement supérieure à 91 km et comprenant plus de huit sites de surface se heurtent à des impossibilités de compatibilité territoriale et risques de réalisiation. Enfin, seules deux classes de configuration et d’emplacement avec un ensemble très limité de scénarios entrent dans le périmètre des limites de faisabilité géologique : entre 89 à 91 km avec huit sites de surface et entre 97 et 98 km avec douze sites de surface. À ce jour, seuls des scénarios à 91 km et huit sites de surface semblent pouvoir satisfaire aux trois exigences suivantes: performances scientifiques acceptables, compatibilité avec les contraintes territoriales et compatibilité avec les contraintes géologiques et techniques. On verra ici que l’un des scénarios (PA31), se détache, sur la base d’une analyse multicritères. Il est retenu pour des études approfondies qui nécessitent des activités sur place, des échanges étroites avec des services compétents dans les deux États Hôtes et avec les parties prenantes dans le périmètre de l'implantation.
