Abstract

JEM--EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

5. Gazing into Cognition: Eye Behavior in Online L2 Speaking Tests

Abstract

The effects of question or task complexity on second language speaking have traditionally been investigated using complexity, accuracy, and fluency measures. Response processes in speaking tests, however, may manifest in other ways, such as through nonverbal behavior. Eye behavior, in the form of averted gaze or blinking frequency, has been found to play an important role in regulating information in studies on human cognition, and it may therefore be an important subconscious signal of test question difficulty in language testing. In this study, 15 CEFR B2/C1-level-English learners took a Zoom-based English test with ten questions spanning six CEFR complexity levels. The participants' eye behaviors were recorded and analyzed between the moment the test question ended and the beginning of their response. The participants additionally provided self-report data on their perceptions of test-question difficulty. Results indicated that as test questions increased in difficulty, participants were more likely to avert their gaze from the interlocutor. They did not, however, blink more frequently as difficulty changed. These results have methodological implications for research on test validation and the study of nonverbal behavior in speaking tests.

6. Reflections on the Past and Future of Language Testing and Assessment: An Emerging Scholar's Perspective

Abstract

In its 40th year, "Language Testing" journal has served as the flagship journal for scholars, researchers, and practitioners in the field of language testing and assessment. This viewpoint piece, written from the perspective of an emerging scholar, discusses two possible future trends based on evidence going back to the very first issue of this journal. First, this paper outlines past efforts to describe and define the construct of second language communication, noting that much work has yet to be done for a more complete description in terms of interactional competence and nonverbal behavior. The second trend highlights the growing movement in applied linguistics toward research transparency through Open Science practices, including replication studies, the sharing of data and materials, and preregistration. This paper outlines work to date in "Language Testing" that encourages open practices and emphasizes the importance of these practices in assessment research.

Abstract

Thin, uniform arsenic targets suitable for high-fidelity cross section measurements in stacked-target experiments were prepared by electrodeposition of arsenic on titanium backings from aqueous solutions. Electrolytic cells were constructed and capable of arsenic deposits ranging in mass from approximately 1$\unicode{x2013}$29 mg (0.32$\unicode{x2013}$7.2 mg/cm$^2$, 0.57$\unicode{x2013}$13 $\mu$m). Examination of electrodeposit surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy and microanalysis was performed to investigate the uniformity of produced targets. Brief studies of plating growth dynamics and structural properties through cyclic voltammetry were also undertaken. Alternative target fabrication approaches by vapor deposition and electrodeposition from a deep eutectic solvent were additionally conducted. We further introduce a non-destructive characterization method for thin targets by neutron activation, which is independent of neutron flux shape, environmental factors, and source geometry, while correcting for any potential scatter or absorption effects., Comment: 15 pages (+4 for references/acknowledgments), 11 figures, preprint prepared for NIM-B

21. Evaluating the impact of nonverbal behavior on language ability ratings.

Abstract

Nonverbal behavior can impact language proficiency scores in speaking tests, but there is little empirical information of the size or consistency of its effects or whether language proficiency may be a moderating variable. In this study, 100 novice raters watched and scored 30 recordings of test takers taking an international, high stakes proficiency test. The speech samples were each 2 minutes long and ranged in proficiency levels. The raters scored each sample on fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and comprehensibility using 7-point semantic differential scales. Nonverbal behavior was extracted using an automated machine learning software called iMotions, and data was analyzed with ordinal mixed effects regression. Results showed that attentional variance predicted fluency, vocabulary, and grammar scores, but only when accounting for proficiency. Higher standard deviations of attention corresponded with lower scores for the lower-proficiency group, but not the mid/higher-proficiency group. Comprehensibility scores were only predicted by mean valence when proficiency was an interaction term. Higher mean valence, or positive emotional behavior, corresponded with higher scores in the lower-proficiency group, but not the mid/higher-proficiency group. Effect sizes for these predictors were quite small, with small amounts of variance explained. These results have implications for construct representation and test fairness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

While the systemic effects of digoxin have been studied, limited data exist on the effects of neuraxial administration. Prior case reports document how digoxin and lidocaine share indistinguishable vials and were inadvertently stocked together in spinal and epidural anesthesia kits, necessitating a need for further implementation of safety measures. Here, we report the poor progression and brain death of a postpartum woman after accidental administration of intrathecal digoxin during a routine elective cesarean section (C-section). It is imperative that quality improvement and safety measures are taken to avoid the recurrence of this medical error.

Abstract

Cerebral artery aneurysms are present in up to 10% of ischemic stroke patients, often within or adjacent to the occluded vessel. In some cases, the approach to intervention may need to be modified based on the size and location of the aneurysm. We describe a 99-year-old female with a known history of cerebral aneurysm who underwent successfully mechanical thrombectomy of a right middle cerebral artery thrombus; an 8-mm aneurysm involving the right M1 bifurcation was identified only on post-procedural digital subtraction angiography. In addition, we discuss strategies to reduce the risk of iatrogenic aneurysm rupture in the setting of endovascular thrombectomy.

Abstract

We report on a pilot study of a novel observing technique, defocussed transmission spectroscopy, and its application to the study of exoplanet atmospheres using ground-based platforms. Similar to defocussed photometry, defocussed transmission spectroscopy has an added advantage over normal spectroscopy in that it reduces systematic errors due to flat-fielding, PSF variations, slit-jaw imperfections and other effects associated with ground-based observations. For one of the planetary systems studied, WASP-12b, we report a tentative detection of additional Na absorption of 0.12+/-0.03[+0.03]% during transit using a 2A wavelength mask. After consideration of a systematic that occurs mid-transit, it is likely that the true depth is actually closer to 0.15%. This is a similar level of absorption reported in the atmosphere of HD209458b (0.135+/-0.017%, Snellen et al. 2008). 41. Electric control of spin injection into a ferroelectric semiconductor

Abstract

Electric-field control of spin-dependent properties has become one of the most attractive phenomena in modern materials research due the promise of new device functionalities. One of the paradigms in this approach is to electrically toggle the spin polarization of carriers injected into a semiconductor using ferroelectric polarization as a control parameter. Using first-principles density functional calculations, we explore the effect of ferroelectric polarization of electron-doped BaTiO3 (n-BaTiO3) on the spin-polarized transmission across the SrRuO3/n-BaTiO3 (001) interface. Our study reveals that the interface transmission is negatively spin-polarized and that ferroelectric polarization reversal leads to a change in the transport spin polarization from -65% to -98%. We show that this effect stems from the large difference in Fermi wave vectors between up- and down-spins in ferromagnetic SrRuO3 and a change in the transport regime driven by ferroelectric polarization switching. The predicted sizeable change in the spin polarization provides a non-volatile mechanism to electrically control spin injection in semiconductor-based spintronics devices., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: In the 330-patient ADVOCATE trial of avacopan for the treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, in which 81% of patients had renal involvement, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) increased on average 7.3 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the avacopan group and 4.1 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the prednisone group (P = 0.029) at week 52. This new analysis examines the results in the patient subgroup with severe renal insufficiency at enrollment into the trial, i.e., eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2). METHODS: eGFR was determined at baseline and over the course of the trial. Changes in eGFR were compared between the 2 treatment groups. RESULTS: In ADVOCATE, 27 of 166 patients (16%) in the avacopan group and 23 of 164 patients (14%) in the prednisone group had a baseline eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2). At week 52, eGFR increased on average 16.1 and 7.7 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the avacopan and prednisone groups, respectively (P = 0.003). The last eGFR value measured during the 52-week treatment period was ≥2-fold higher than baseline in 41% of patients in the avacopan group compared to 13% in the prednisone group (P = 0.030). More patients in the avacopan group versus prednisone group had increases in eGFR above 20, 30, and 45 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), respectively. Serious adverse events occurred in 13 of 27 patients (48%) in the avacopan group and 16 of 23 patients (70%) in the prednisone group. CONCLUSION: Among patients with baseline eGFR ≤20 ml/min per 1.73 m(2) in the ADVOCATE trial, eGFR improved more in the avacopan group than in the prednisone group.
