A framework for the analysis of illness narratives is presented, along with a discussion of methodological issues. Topics include the rise of chronic illness and the crisis of bio-medical narratives, form and content in chronic illness narratives, and three narrative forms: contingent, moral and core narratives.

The article explores some of the particularities of the game of snooker and its social significance, in the age of television. The history of snooker is bound up with its parent game, billiards. The earliest ancestors of billiards were games played on lawns. Games with balls and sticks were played by the Greeks and Romans. As time went on the game became more refined and recognizable in its present form. From the TV producer's viewpoint there are other clear advantages of televising snooker. First, it is cheap. This is true for televising all sport, a ready-made programme exists and all that is necessary is to set the cameras in place. Secondly, it is not dependent on the weather. The significance of snooker lies in its representation and reproduction of key social forms. One of these is social class. Billiards and snooker have long been the province of both the palace and the pub. Modern snooker has successfully combined the worlds of the roughs and respectables in a subtle way.

The policy focus on self-management of long-term conditions is misplaced and not supported by good evidence, acccording to Professor Mike Bury, author of the new book Health and Illness. In a debate with David Pink of the Long Term Medical Conditions Alliance, he also argues that the levels of chronic disease in the U.K. are likely to have been exaggerated.
