The feasibility of using ticket dispensing machines to collect campground fees was tested in the California Region of the U. S. Forest Service during the summer of 1961 and described in this report. In addition, tests were made on the performance of tickets as a source of information. This part of the research was conducted with the belief that characteristics of campers and their equipment can be estimated by analyzing the self-registration information on campground fee receipts issued by ticket vending machines. Analysis of data yielded information on place of residence, group size, camping equipment, campsite location, and duration of visit. To benefit furture campground development and design, modifications are suggested for improving response and for handling tickets. (BL)

This survey reports the use of installed tables and stoves as compared with the use of personal tables and stoves at 20 campgrounds in the central Sierra Nevada during the summer of 1961. The data reveal about 70 percent of the campers brought a portable stove. Installed grates were used by only half of the campers who had them available, and almost all of this fireplace use was for functions other than cooking. On the other hand, installed tables were almost always used even though many campers brought portable tables. Results of the survey seem to indicate that it would be advisable to decrease per-unit investment in stoves while specifying tables generous in size. Additional implications for provision and design of campsite stoves and tables are also presented. (BL)

Presented in this thesaurus are keywords and cross references for the indexing and retrieval of outdoor recreation literature. It was compiled to facilitate the development of a common language for outdoor recreation planning, programming, research, and resource management. Terms selected are pertinent to both the natural and physical resources, their value, management, development, and user requirements. The format consists of six sections: (1) alphabetical list of terms with notes showing broader term (BT), narrower term (NT), scope note (SN), preferred term (USE), and UF meaning used for or instead of another term or concept; (2) straight alphabetical listing of terms; (3) display of terms alphabetically within 26 subject categories; (4) grouped array of terms rotated within each of the 26 groups; (5) a rotated array of all terms; and (6) a classified arrangement of terms based on the major categories: (a) Outdoor Recreation Resources and Facilities, (b) Administration, (c) Recreation Activities, Equipment, and Users, (d) Economic Aspects, and (e) Supporting Information. An explanation of sample listings is given together with suggestions for using the thesaurus. (BL)

A study was conducted to determine the propensity of non-corporate owners of large forest tracts in East Texas to offer their lands to the general public for recreation. The overall objective was to determine if an attitude scale could be used to differentiate between non-corporate timberland owners with definite plans for recreational development and those without such plans. An attitude scale was constructed from a collection of statements sorted by 50 judges along a six-point positive-negative continuum. Data were collected in interviews with 100 landowners. Results showed that: (1) owners had favorable attitudes toward recreation, but the recreation plans of approximately 1/5 of them involved vacation home subdivisions rather than recreation opportunities for the general public; (2) about half had no plans for development of recreation opportunities; (3) 2/3 of the remaining 30 percent appeared to be willing to consider development of income-producing recreation facilities; (4) knowledge of the concept of multiple use was not related to plans for recreational development; (5) current policies of allowing visitors were not related to recreation plans; and (6) landowners with plans for recreational development were statistically more frequent foreign travelers than landowners with no such plans. Recreational use of wildland is growing rapidly and forms a major portion of the manager's job. About one-third of today's forestry students will be employed by land management agencies or by companies committed to the multiple-use concept. Education, course materials and the supply of forest management graduates have lagged considerably behind needs and the demand for published information on managerial skills and for qualified personnel is increasing. To help meet these needs, this report contains information on the current and expected nature of the recreation management job on the western national forests; judgments of recreation managers on educational deficiencies of forestry graduates and recommendations for changes in forestry education; basic philosophies of education and recreation management accepted as guides in course development; a general framework for the technical content of a course in wildland recreation management; and a group of 4 courses geared to the above factors. The proposed courses should provide educators with a useful source for preparing their own courses in recreation management within the multiple-use context. Four categories of literature were reviewed and utilized in implementing the project: methods of research in education, methods of job analysis, theory of education and curriculum development, technical components and education in wildland recreation management. Additional course recommendations are expected to appear in 1969 as a publication of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. (JS)
