Context. Many disk galaxies host two extended stellar components that rotate in opposite directions. The analysis of the stellar populations of the counter-rotating components provides constraints on the environmental and internal processes that drive their formation. Aims. The S0 NGC 1366 in the Fornax cluster is known to host a stellar component that is kinematically decoupled from the main body of the galaxy. Here we successfully separated the two counter-rotating stellar components to independently measure the kinematics and properties of their stellar populations. Methods. We performed a spectroscopic decomposition of the spectrum obtained along the galaxy major axis and separated the relative contribution of the two counter-rotating stellar components and of the ionized-gas component. We measured the line-strength indices of the two counter-rotating stellar components and modeled each of them with single stellar population models that account for the {\alpha}/Fe overabundance. Results. We found that the counter-rotating stellar component is younger, has nearly the same metallicity, and is less {\alpha}/Fe enhanced than the corotating component. Unlike most of the counter-rotating galaxies, the ionized gas detected in NGC 1366 is neither associated with the counter-rotating stellar component nor with the main galaxy body. On the contrary, it has a disordered distribution and a disturbed kinematics with multiple velocity components observed along the minor axis of the galaxy. Conclusions. The different properties of the counter-rotating stellar components and the kinematic peculiarities of the ionized gas suggest that NGC 1366 is at an intermediate stage of the acquisition process, building the counter-rotating components with some gas clouds still falling onto the galaxy., Comment: A&A in press. 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 Table

We want to get insight into the nature, i.e. the formation mechanism and the evolution, of UGC 7639, a dwarf galaxy in the Canes Venatici I Cloud (CVnIC). We used archival GALEX (FUV and NUV) and SDSS images, as well as Hyperleda and NED databases, to constrain its global properties. GALEX FUV/NUV images show that UGC 7639 inner regions are composed mostly by young stellar populations. In addition, we used smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations with chemo-photometric implementation to account for its formation and evolution. UGC 7639 is an example of blue dwarf galaxy whose global properties are well matched by our multi-wavelength and multi-technique approach, that is also a suitable approach to highlight the evolution of these galaxies as a class. We found that the global properties of UGC 7639, namely its total absolute B-band magnitude, its whole spectral energy distribution (SED), and its morphology are well-matched by an encounter with a system four times more massive than our target. Moreover, the current star formation rate (SFR) of the simulated dwarf, ~0.03 M_sun yr-1, is in good agreement with our UV-based estimate. For UGC 7639, we estimated a galaxy age of 8.6 Gyr. We present a spectral decomposition technique and its applications to a sample of galaxies hosting large-scale counter-rotating stellar disks. Our spectral decomposition technique allows to separate and measure the kinematics and the properties of the stellar populations of both the two counter-rotating disks in the observed galaxies at the same time. We present the results of integral-field spectroscopic observations of the two disk galaxies NGC 3593 and NGC 4550 obtained with VIMOS/VLT. Both galaxies are known to host 2 counter-rotating stellar disks, with the ionized gas co-rotating with one of them. We measured in each galaxy the ionized gas kinematics and metallicity, and the surface brightness, kinematics, mass surface density, and the stellar populations of the 2 stellar components to constrain the formation scenario of these peculiar galaxies. We applied a novel spectroscopic decomposition technique to both galaxies, to separate the relative contribution of the 2 counter-rotating stellar and one ionized-gas components to the observed spectrum. We measured the kinematics and the line strengths of the Lick indices of the 2 counter-rotating stellar components. We modeled the data of each stellar component with single stellar population models that account for the alpha/Fe overabundance. In both galaxies we successfully separated the main from the secondary stellar component that is less massive and rotates in the same direction of the ionized-gas component. The 2 stellar components have exponential surface-brightness profiles. In both galaxies, the two counter-rotating stellar components have different stellar populations: the secondary stellar disk is younger, more metal poor, and more alpha-enhanced than the main galaxy stellar disk. Our findings rule out an internal origin of the secondary stellar component and favor a scenario where it formed from gas accreted on retrograde orbits from the environment fueling an in situ outside-in rapid star formation. The event occurred ~ 2 Gyr ago in NGC 3593, and ~ 7 Gyr ago in NGC 4550. The binary galaxy merger scenario cannot be ruled out, and a larger sample is required to statistically determine which is the most efficient mechanism to build counter-rotating stellar disks (abridged)., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The NGC 1023 group is one of the most studied nearby groups. We want to give an insight into the evolution of its innermost region by means of ultraviolet observations and proper models. We used the FUV and NUV GALEX archival data as well as a large set of SPH simulations with chemo-photometric implementation. From the UV observations we found that several, already known, dwarf galaxies very close to NGC 1023 are also detected in UV and two more objects (with no optical counterpart) can be added to the group. Using these data we construct exhaustive models to account for their formation. We find that the whole SED of NGC 1023 and its global properties are well matched by a simulation which provides a minor merger with a companion system 5 times less massive. The strong interaction phase started 7.7 Gyr ago and the final merger 1.8 Gyr ago., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the NGC 3933 poor galaxy association, that contains NGC 3934, which is classified as a polar-ring galaxy. The multi-band photometric analysis of NGC 3934 allows us to investigate the nature of this galaxy and to re-define the NGC 3933 group members with the aim to characterize the group dynamical properties and its evolutionary phase. We imaged the group in the far (FUV,lambda = 1530A) and near (NUV, lambda=2316A) ultraviolet (UV) bands of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). From the deep optical imaging we determined the fine structure of NGC 3934. We measured the recession velocity of PGC 213894 which shows that it belongs to the NGC 3933 group. We derived the spectral energy distribution (SED) from FUV (GALEX) to far-IR emission of the two brightest members of the group. We compared a grid of smooth particle hydrodynamical (SPH) chemo-photometric simulations with the SED and the integrated properties of NGC 3934 and NGC 3933 to devise their possible formation/evolutionary scenarios. The NGC 3933 group has six bright members: a core composed of five galaxies, which have Hickson's compact group characteristics, and a more distant member, PGC 37112. The group velocity dispersion is relatively low (157+-44 km s-1). The projected mass, from the NUV photometry, is ~7$\times$10^12 M\odot with a crossing time of 0.04 Hubble times, suggesting that at least in the center the group is virialized. We do not find evidence that NGC 3934 is a polar-ring galaxy, as suggested by the literature, but find that it is a disk galaxy with a prominent dust-lane structure and a wide type-II shell structure. NGC 3934 is a quite rare example of a shell galaxy in a likely dense galaxy region. We detected recent star formation in nearby early-type galaxies located in low density environments, with GALEX Ultraviolet (UV) imaging. Signatures of star formation may be present in the nucleus and in outer rings/arm like structures. Our study suggests that such star formation may be induced by different triggering mechanisms, such as the inner secular evolution driven by bars, and minor accretion phenomena. We investigate the nature of the (FUV-NUV) color vs. Mg2 correlation, and suggest that it relates to "downsizing" in galaxy formation., Comment: Conference "UV Universe 2010" S. We present a study of the stellar populations of ring and/or arm-like structures in a sample of S0 galaxies using GALEX far- and near-ultraviolet imaging and SDSS optical data. Such structures are prominent in the UV and reveal recent star formation. We quantitatively characterize these rejuvenation events, estimating the average age and stellar mass of the ring structures, as well as of the entire galaxy. The mass fraction of the UV-bright rings is a few percent of the total galaxy mass, although the UV ring luminosity reaches 70% of the galaxy luminosity. The integrated colors of these S0s locates them in the red sequence (NGC 2962) and in the so-called green valley. We suggest that the star formation episodes may be induced by different triggering mechanisms, such as the inner secular evolution driven by bars, and interaction episodes., Comment: Conference "UV Universe 2010" S. We present low resolution Spitzer-IRS spectra of 40 ETGs, selected from a sample of 65 ETGs showing emission lines in their optical spectra. We homogeneously extract the mid-infrared (MIR) spectra, and after the proper subtraction of a "passive" ETG template, we derive the intensity of the ionic and molecular lines and of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission features. We use MIR diagnostic diagrams to investigate the powering mechanisms of the ionized gas. The mid-infrared spectra of early-type galaxies show a variety of spectral characteristics. We empirically sub-divide the sample into five classes of spectra with common characteristics. Class-0, accounting for 20% of the sample, are purely passive ETGs with neither emission lines nor PAH features. Class-1 show emission lines but no PAH features, and account for 17.5% of the sample. Class-2, in which 50% of the ETGs are found, as well as having emission lines, show PAH features with unusual ratios, e.g. 7.7 {\mu}m/11.3 {\mu}m \leq 2.3. Class-3 objects have emission lines and PAH features with ratios typical of star-forming galaxies. 7.5% of objects fall in this class, likely to be objects in a starburst/post-starburst regime. Class-4, containing only 5% of the ETGs, is dominated by a hot dust continuum. The diagnostic diagram [Ne III]15.55{\mu}m/[Ne II]12.8{\mu}m vs. [S III]33.48{\mu}m/[Si II]34.82{\mu}m, is used to investigate the different mechanisms ionizing the gas. If we exclude NGC 3258 where a starburst seems present, most of our ETGs contain gas ionized via either AGN-like or shock phenomena, or both. Most of the spectra in the present sample are classified as LINERs in the optical window. The proposed MIR spectral classes show unambiguously the manifold of the physical processes and ionization mechanisms, from star formation, low level AGN activity, to shocks, present in LINER nuclei., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present GALEX far-ultraviolet (FUV, $\lambda_{eff}$=1538 \AA) and near-ultraviolet (NUV, $\lambda_{eff}$=2316 \AA) surface photometry of 40 early-type galaxies (ETGs) selected from a wider sample of 65 nearby ETGs showing emission lines in their optical spectra. We derive FUV and NUV surface brightness profiles, (FUV-NUV) colour profiles and D$_{25}$ integrated magnitudes. We extend the photometric study to the optical {\it r} band from SDSS imaging for 14 of these ETGs. In general, the (FUV-NUV) radial colour profiles become redder with galactocentric distance in both rejuvenated ($\leq 4$ Gyr) and old ETGs. Colour profiles of NGC 1533, NGC 2962, NGC 2974, NGC 3489, and IC 5063 show rings and/or arm-like structures, bluer than the body of the galaxy, suggesting the presence of recent star formation. Although seven of our ETGs show shell systems in their optical image, only NGC 7135 displays shells in the UV bands. We characterize the UV and optical surface brightness profiles, along the major axis, using a Sersic law. The Sersic law exponent, $n$, varies from 1 to 16 in the UV bands. S0 galaxies tend to have lower values of $n$ ($\leq5$). The Sersic law exponent $n=4$ seems to be a watershed: ETGs with $n>4$ tend to have [$\alpha$/Fe] greater than 0.15, implying a short star-formation time scale. We find a significant correlation between the FUV$-$NUV colour and central velocity dispersions $\sigma$, with the UV colours getting bluer at larger $\sigma$. Understanding the astrophysical processes acting within galaxy groups and their effects on the evolution of the galaxy population is one of the crucial topic of modern cosmology, as almost 60% of galaxies in the Local Universe are found in groups. We imaged in the far (FUV 1539 A) and near ultraviolet (NUV 2316 A) with GALEX three nearby groups, namely LGG93, LGG127 and LGG225. We obtained the UV galaxy surface photometry and, for LGG225, the only group covered by the SDSS, the photometry in u, g, r, i, z bands. We discuss galaxy morphologies looking for interaction signatures and we analyze the SED of galaxies to infer their luminosity-weighted ages. The UV and optical photometry was also used to perform a kinematical and dynamical analysis of each group and to evaluate the stellar mass. A few member galaxies in LGG225 show a distorted UV morphology due to ongoing interactions. (FUV-NUV) colors suggest that spirals in LGG93 and LGG225 host stellar populations in their outskirts younger than that of M31 and M33 in the LG or with less extinction. The irregular interacting galaxy NGC3447A has a significantly younger stellar population (few Myr old) than the average of the other irregular galaxies in LGG225 suggesting that the encounter triggered star formation. The early-type members of LGG225, NGC3457 and NGC3522, have masses of the order of a few 10^9 Mo, comparable to the Local Group ellipticals. For the most massive spiral in LGG225, we estimate a stellar mass of ~4x10$^{10}$ Mo, comparable to M33 in the LG. Ages of stellar populations range from a few to ~7 Gyr for the galaxies in LGG225. The kinematical and dynamical analysis indicates that LGG127 and LGG225 are in a pre-virial collapse phase, i.e. still undergoing dynamical relaxation, while LGG93 is likely virialized. A large fraction of otherwise normal galaxies shows a weak nuclear activity. One of the signatures of the low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) is the ultraviolet variability which was serendipitously discovered in the center of some low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) galaxies. There is a pressing need to acquire better statistics about UV flaring and variability in galaxy nuclei, both in terms of the number and monitoring of targets. The Science Data Archive of the Hubble Space Telescope was queried to find all the elliptical galaxies with UV images obtained in different epochs with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) and possibly with nuclear spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) in the region of the Halpha emission line. These data were found only for the elliptical radiogalaxy NGC 4278. The UV flux of the nuclear source of NGC 4278 was measured by means of aperture photometry on the WFPC2/F218W images obtained between June 1994 and January 1995. The mass of the central supermassive black hole (SBH) was estimated by measuring the broad components of the emission lines observed in the STIS/G750M spectrum and assuming that the gas is uniformly distributed in a sphere. The nucleus of NGC 4278 hosts a barely resolved but strongly variable UV source. Its UV luminosity increased by a factor of 1.6 in a period of 6 months. The amplitude and scale time of the UV flare in NGC 4278 are remarkably similar to those of the brightest UV nuclear transients which were earlier found in other LLAGNs. The mass of the SBH was found to be in the range between 7x10^7 and 2x10^9 M_sun. Systems of shells and polar rings in early-type galaxies are considered "bona fide" tracers of mass accretion and/or mergers. Their high frequency in low density environments suggests that such episodes could drive the evolution of at least a fraction of the early-type galaxy population. Their UV emission is crucial to test whether these galaxies host ongoing/recent star formation. We used far and near ultraviolet, optical, near infrared images, HI maps, and line strength indices to investigate the nuclear and outer regions of the galaxies as well as the regions where fine structures are present. The GALEX Near (NUV) and Far UV (FUV) images of MCG-05-07-001 and NGC 1210 show complex tidal tails and debris structures. The UV morphology of both galaxies appears so different from the optical one that the early-type classification may not apply. In both GALEX bands the polar ring of MCG-05-07-001 is the dominant feature, whereas an extended tidal tail dominates the FUV bands of NGC 1210. In MCG-05-07-001 and NGC 1210 there is a strong correlation between structures detected in the FUV and NUV bands and in HI. NGC 5329 does not show evidence of shells in the UV. We try to constrain the age of the accretion episode or merger which gave rise to the shells and polar rings with the aid of composite stellar populations that take the presence of dust into account. The presence of HI in both MCG-05-07-001 and NGC 1210 argues in favour of wet mergers. Models suggest the presence of very young stellar populations in MCG-05-07-001: the observations could be explained in the framework of a conspicuous burst of star formation that occurred <=1 Gyr ago and involved a large fraction of the galaxy mass. Our models suggest that also the nuclei of NGC 1210 and NGC 5329 could have been rejuvenated by an accretion episode about 2-4 Gyr ago. As part of the European Supernova Collaboration we obtained extensive photometry and spectroscopy of the type Ia SN 2002dj covering epochs from 11 days before to nearly two years after maximum. Detailed optical and near-infrared observations show that this object belongs to the class of the high-velocity gradient events as indicated by Si, S and Ca lines. The light curve shape and velocity evolution of SN 2002dj appear to be nearly identical to SN 2002bo. The only significant difference is observed in the optical to near-IR colours and a reduced spectral emission beyond 6500 A. For high-velocity gradient Type Ia supernovae, we tentatively identify a faster rise to maximum, a more pronounced inflection in the V and R light curves after maximum and a brighter, slower declining late-time B light curve as common photometric properties of this class of objects. They also seem to be characterized by a different colour and colour evolution with respect to ``normal'' SNe Ia. The usual light curve shape parameters do not distinguish these events. Stronger, more blueshifted absorption features of intermediate-mass elements and lower temperatures are the most prominent spectroscopic features of Type Ia supernovae displaying high velocity gradients. It appears that these events burn more intermediate-mass elements in the outer layers. The bright galaxy population of the Local Group Analog (LGA) LGG 225 has been imaged with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) through its Far- and Near-UV wavebands. A significant fraction of the group members appear to underwent recent/on-going interaction episodes that strongly disturbed overall galaxy morphology. UV-bright regions, sites of intense star formation activity accompanied by intense dust extinction, mark the galaxy outskirts forming irregular structures and tails. Shell galaxies are widely considered the debris of recent accretion/merging episodes. Their high frequency in low density environment suggests that such episodes could be among the driver of the early-type galaxy secular evolution. We present the GALEX far FUV and near NUV ultraviolet imaging of three nearby shell galaxies, namely NGC 2865, NGC 5018 and NGC 7135. The system of shells and fine structures visible in the optical is detected in the NUV image of NGC 2865 and in both NUV and FUV images of NGC 7135. The NUV image of NGC 5018 does not present shell structures. We detect absorption features in the nuclear region of all three galaxies. NGC 2865 has a nearly flat colour profile with (FUV-NUV)~2 throughout the whole galaxy. NGC 7135 is blue in the center (FUV-NUV)~0 and as red as (FUV-NUV)~1.5 in the outskirts, including the faint shell-like feature. We investigate the ability of the nuclear GALEX (FUV-NUV) colour to provide information about rejuvenation phenomena in the stellar populations of the shell galaxies. To this aim, we derive from theory the relationship between the Mg2, Hbeta, HgammaA, HdeltaA Lick line-strength indices and the (FUV-NUV) colour. We extend the study to a sample of early-type galaxies with emission lines in their optical spectra (Annibali et al. 2007). In the index vs.(FUV-NUV) colour diagrams, most of the galaxies are well explained by passively evolving SSPs. On the average, ages and metallicities of the galaxies in our sample estimated from optical line-strength indices are consistent with those inferred from the (FUV-NUV) colour. In general, all the colours but for (FUV-NUV) and (FUV-V), become nearly age insensitive when 1-2 Gyr have elapsed from the last star forming event. Considering composite stellar population models with a recent burst of star formation, we suggest that the position of the NGC 7135 and NGC 2865 nuclei in the (FUV-NUV)-Hbeta plane could be explained in term of a recent rejuvenation episode. (Context) When a galaxy acquires material from the outside, it is likely that the resulting angular momentum of the accreted material is decoupled from that of the pre-existing galaxy. The presence of stars counter-rotating with respect to other stars and/or gas represents an extreme case of decoupling. (Aims) NGC5719, an almost edge-on Sab galaxy with a prominent skewed dust lane, shows a spectacular on-going interaction with its face-on Sbc companion NGC5713. Observations of such interacting systems provide insight into the processes at work in assembling and reshaping galaxies. (Methods) Studies were made of the distribution and kinematics of neutral hydrogen in the NGC5719/13 galaxy pair and the ionised gas and stellar kinematics along the major axis of NGC5719. (Results) Two HI tidal bridges that loop around NGC5719 and connect to NGC5713, and two HI tidal tails departing westward from NGC5713 were detected. There is a correspondence between the HI condensations and the location of clumps of young stars within and outside the disc of NGC5719. The low-mass satellite PGC135857 at the tip of the northern tail was detected in HI, and is likely a by-product of the interaction. The neutral and ionised hydrogen in the disc of NGC5719 are counter-rotating with respect to the main stellar disc. The counter-rotating stellar disc contains about 20% of the stars in the system, and has the same radial extension as the main stellar disc. This is the first interacting system in which a counter-rotating stellar disc has been detected. (Conclusions) The data support a scenario where HI from the large reservoir available in the galaxy's surroundings was accreted by NGC5719 onto a retrograde orbit and subsequently fuelled the in-situ formation of the counter-rotating stellar disc., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A. Morphological disturbances and gas kinematics of the SB0 galaxy NGC 7679=Arp 216 are investigated to get clues to the history of this highly composite object, where AGN and starburst signatures dominate each other in the X-ray and optical/IR regime, respectively. Perturbations of the ionized gas velocity field appear quite mild within 15'' (~5 kpc) from the center, so as it can be straightforwardly modeled as a circularly rotating disk. On the contrary, outside that radius, significant disturbances show up. In particular, the eastern distorted arm as well as the huge neutral hydrogen bridge connecting NGC 7679 with the nearby Seyfert spiral NGC 7682 unambiguously represent the vestige of a close encounter of the two objects dating back ~500 Myr ago. The relationship of such past event with the much more recent, centrally located starburst (not older than 20 Myr) cannot be easily established. Altogether, the classification of NGC 7679, turns out to be less extreme than that proposed in the past, being simply a (disturbed) galaxy where starburst and AGN activity cohexist with a starburst dominating the bolometric luminosity., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Relying on U,B imagery at the Italian Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), we report here the discovery of a sample of 13 new UV-bright post-HB candidate stars in the field of the galactic open cluster NGC 6791. Owing to its super-solar metal content ([Fe/H]>0.2 dex) and estimated age (t> 8 Gyr), this cluster represents the nearest and ideal stellar aggregate to match the distinctive properties of the evolved stellar populations possibly ruling the UV-upturn phenomenon in elliptical galaxies and bulges of spirals. NGC5018, one of the weakest UV emitters among giant ellipticals (gE) observed with IUE, appears to consist of an optical stellar population very similar to that of the compact, dwarf elliptical M32, which is several magnitudes fainter in luminosity than NGC5018 and whose stellar population is know to be ~3 Gyr old. Here we show that the mid-UV spectra of these two galaxies are also very similar down to an angular scale hundreds times smaller than the IUE large aperture (as probed by HST/FOS UV spectra obtained through 0.86 arcsec apertures). This implies a reasonably close match of the populations dominating their mid-UV light (namely, their main-sequence turnoff stars). These data indicate that NGC5018 has, in its inner regions, a rather uniform dominance of a ~3 Gyr-old stellar population, probably a bit different in metallicity from M32. Combined with the various structures that indicate that NGC5018 is the result of a recent major merger, it appears that almost all of stars we see in its center regions were formed about 3 Gyr ago, in that merger event. NGC5018 is likely the older brother of NGC7252, the canonical gE-in-formation merger. As such, NGC5018 is perhaps the best galaxy which can tell us how a merger works, after the fireworks subside, to form a gE galaxy today. The ~15.1 years period found in the long-term UBV photoelectric and photographic photometry of the symbiotic nova V1016 Cyg is detected also in the (J-K) colour index and in the UV continuum and emission line fluxes from IUE and HUT spectra. It could be interpreted either as the effect of recurrent enhanced mass loss episodes from the Mira type variable companion to a hot component along its ultra-wide orbit (proposed from recent HST observations) or the true orbital period of the inner, unresolved binary of a triple system. A 410-day delay of the maximum of UV emission lines fluxes with respect to the maximum of continuum was found. The average flux decrement shortward the Ly$_{\alpha}$ emission, due to the well-known ``forest'' of absorptions, has been measured in the spectra of 8 quasars. Quasi-simultaneous optical and IUE observations of the two low redshift quasars PKS 0637--75 (z=0.654) and MC 1104+16 (z=0.632) have been carried out, obtaining relatively high S/N, spectrophotometrically calibrated data on their energy distribution from the rest frame H$_{\beta}$ to the Lyman continuum. Six more quasars in the redshift range 2.5-3.4 have been observed in the optical domain. For all the quasars the ``intrinsic'' continuum slope and normalization have been estimated longward the Ly$_{\alpha}$ emission and extrapolated towards the Lyman continuum to measure the average depressions, which have been compared with the model statistics of the Ly$_{\alpha}$ clouds. When all the known classes of absorbers are taken into account with plausible values for their equivalent width distribution and evolution, a good agreement is obtained with the observations. The results for the observed continuum decrement at $z \sim 0.65$ are identical to those predicted by the evolution with redshift of the number of Ly$_{\alpha}$ forest systems including the HST data and within $2\sigma$ of the predicted value using the ``standard'' Ly$_{\alpha}$ evolution (as determined only at high z)., Comment: 8 pages Astronomy Astrophysics TEX

Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Faint Object Camera (FOC) f/48 images of M31, M32, and NGC 205 (field of view 23 sec x 23 sec with 0.45 sec pixel size) are analyzed as observed through the combined UV filters F150W and F130LP. The absolute calibration of the data and the internal disagreement between observed and expected count rates in the UV region lead us to suggest that the filter combination F150W+F130LP suffers from a 5 times degraded UV sensitivity. A corrected efficiency curve is construced using the UV/optical spectral energy distributions of these three galaxies, which is consistent with all of the data analyzed here. Eighty-one individual stars are detected in M31, 10 stars in M32, and 78 stars in NGC 205. Comparisons with other UV images and optical images indicates that these stars are hot, UV-bright stars, even though our corrected efficiency curve suggests that flux from 1200-2450 A contributes only 7% of the counts in M32, 19% in M31, and 60% in NGC 205. The complex nucleus of M31 as seen by Lauer et al. (1993) is confirmed; M32 has a generally smooth appearance and NGC 205 is dominated by a UV-bright, somewhat resolved nucleus. Analysis of these data is done through the new, extensive stellar isochrones of Bertelli et al. (1994) and the population synthesis models of Bressan, Chiosi, and Fagotto (1994). This analysis shows that high-metal stars (Z greater than 0.05) evolve into UV-bright stars (P-EAGB, H-HB, and AGB-manque stars) that are less luminous and cooler but are significantly longer lived than the P-AGB stars produced by stars with Z less than 0.05. Moreover, the proportion of P-EAGB, H-HB, and AGB-manque stars is also a function of age, with older stars of fixed mean metallicity having a higher proportion than younger stars. Hence, with either metallicity or age differences as an interpretation of the line-strength luminosity correlation for ellipticals, the high-metallicity 'tail' of the stellar content of a galaxy can produce far-UV flux in much greater proportion than its actual proportion of galaxy mass. The resulting model of the sources of far-UV flux is inherently composite, with the total UV flux from a stellar population both rapidly increasing and changing its mean spectrum with increasing mean metallicity (or mean age). This model is consistent with several pieces of observational evidence.

The discovery of a weak radio galaxy from the Leiden Berkeley Deep Survey at a redshift of 2.390 is presented, as well as nine-band photometry for the galaxy and for surrounding objects. The source 53W002 is not variable on the time scales of years. Its rest-frame UV continuum is compared with IUE spectra of various nearby galaxies with relatively recent starbursts, and with nearby AGNs. It is inferred from the C IV/Ly-alpha and N V/Ly-alpha ratios that 53W002 has a Seyfert 1-like AGN, and that the ratios constrain the nonthermal component to about 35 percent of the observed UV continuum. Several independent age estimates yield a consistent value of 0.25-0.32 Gyr. The available data are consistent with 53W002 being a genuinely young galaxy seen at a redshift of 2.390 during its first major starburst. It likely started forming most of its current stars at redshifts between 2.5 and 3.0, suggesting that radio galaxies do not form the bulk of their stars coevally, but start doing so over a lengthy period of cosmic time.
