Abstract: We conducted measurements of $K^- + {^3{\rm He}} \to \pi \!Y \!N + N'$ reactions using a $1~{\rm GeV}/c$ $K^-$-beam, with the objective of understanding the broad decay width of $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ (approximately twice as broad as that of $\Lambda(1405)$ considered to be the $\bar{K} \!N$ quasi-bound state). We successfully reproduced distributions of the $\pi \! Y \! N$ invariant mass and momentum transfer for $\pi \! Y \! N$ using model fitting functions for $\bar{K} \!N \!N$ formation and quasi-free $\bar{K}$ absorption (${\rm QF}_{\bar{K}-{\rm abs}}$) processes. The model can describe the experimental data quite well, and four $\bar{K} \! N \! N \to \pi \! Y \! N $ cross-sections were obtained. The results indicate that mesonic decay is the dominant decay branch of $\bar{K} \! N \! N$. The results also suggest that $\Gamma_{\pi \Lambda N} \sim \Gamma_{\pi \Sigma N}$, which indicates that the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=1$ absorption channel, in addition to the $I_{\bar{K} \! N}=0$ absorption channel, substantially contribute to the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ decay, making the $\bar{K} \! N \! N$ state approximately twice as unstable as $\Lambda$(1405).

Abstract: We measured a set of $\pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp$, $\pi^0\Sigma^0$, and $\pi^-\Sigma^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\pi\Sigma$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $\pi\Sigma$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $\Lambda(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: $\bar K$-nuclear bound systems, kaonic nuclei, have been widely discussed as products of the strongly attractive $\bar K N$ interaction in $I = 0$ channels. Recently, we demonstrated that kaonic nuclei can be produced via in-flight $(K^-,N)$ reactions using the low-momentum DC kaon beam at the J-PARC E15 experiment. We observed the simplest kaonic nuclei, $K^-pp$, having a much deeper binding energy than normal nuclei. For further studies, we have proposed a series of experimental programs for the systematic investigation of light kaonic nuclei, from $\bar K N$ ($\Lambda(1405)$) to $\bar K NNNN$. Abstract: We have performed an exclusive measurement of the $K^{-}+\! ~^{3}{\rm He} \to \Lambda pn$ reaction at an incident kaon momentum of $1\ {\rm GeV}/c$.In the $\Lambda p$ invariant mass spectrum, a clear peak was observed below the mass threshold of $\bar{K}\!+\!N\!+\!N$, as a signal of the kaonic nuclear bound state, $\bar{K}NN$.The binding energy, decay width, and $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor of this state were observed to be $B_{K} = 42\pm3({\rm stat.})^{+3}_{-4}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, $\Gamma_{K} = 100\pm7({\rm stat.})^{+19}_{-9}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}$, and $Q_{K} = 383\pm11({\rm stat.})^{+4}_{-1}({\rm syst.})\ {\rm MeV}/c$, respectively. The total production cross-section of $\bar{K}NN$, determined by its $\Lambda p$ decay mode, was $\sigma^{tot}_{K} \cdot BR_{\Lambda p} = 9.3\pm0.8({\rm stat.})^{+1.4}_{-1.0}({\rm syst.})\ \mu{\rm b}$.We estimated the branching ratio of the $\bar{K}NN$ state to the $\Lambda p$ and $\Sigma^{0}p$ decay modes as $BR_{\Lambda p}/BR_{\Sigma^{0}p} \sim 1.7$, by assuming that the physical processes leading to the $\Sigma N\!N$ final states are analogous to those of $\Lambda pn$., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay (0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}) is considered the best potential resource to determine the absolute neutrino mass scale. Moreover, if observed, it will signal that the total lepton number is not conserved and neutrinos are their own anti-particles. Presently, this physics case is one of the most important research beyond Standard Model and might guide the way towards a Grand Unified Theory of fundamental interactions. Since the \b{eta}\b{eta} decay process involves nuclei, its analysis necessarily implies nuclear structure issues. The 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} decay rate can be expressed as a product of independent factors: the phase-space factors, the nuclear matrix elements (NME) and a function of the masses of the neutrino species. Thus the knowledge of the NME can give information on the neutrino mass scale, if the 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} decay rate is measured. In the NURE project, supported by a Starting Grant of the European Research Council, nuclear reactions of double charge-exchange (DCE) will be used as a tool to extract information on the \b{eta}\b{eta} NME. In DCE reactions and \b{eta}\b{eta} decay, the initial and final nuclear states are the same and the transition operators have similar structure. Abstract: We observed a distinct peak in the $\Lambda p$ invariant mass spectrum of $^{3}{\rm He}(K^-, \, \Lambda p)n$, well below the mass threshold of $m_K + 2 m_p$. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region $q = 350 \sim 650$ MeV/$c$, one can clearly separate the peak from the quasi-free process, $\overline{K}N \rightarrow \overline{K}N$ followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons $\overline{K}NN \rightarrow \Lambda N $. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit-Wigner pole position at $B_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 47 \pm 3 \, (stat.) \,^{+3}_{-6} \,(sys.)$ MeV having a width $\Gamma_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 115 \pm 7 \, (stat.) \,^{+10}_{-9} \,(sys.)$ MeV, and the $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter $Q_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 381 \pm 14 \, (stat.)\,^{+57}_{-0} \,(sys.)$ MeV/$c$, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness -- "$K^-pp$"., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The exclusive charmonium production process in $\bar{p}p$ annihilation with an associated $\pi^0$ meson $\bar{p}p\to J/\psi\pi^0$ is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the $J/\psi\to e^+e^-$ decay channel with the PANDA (AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the $\bar{p}p\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $\bar{p}p\to J/\psi\pi^0\pi^0$ reactions are performed with PandaRoot, the simulation and analysis software framework of the PANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at PANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity., Comment: 25 pages, 22 figures

Abstract: Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at \PANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel $\bar p p \to e^+ e^-$ is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, $\textit{i.e.}$ $\bar p p \to \pi^+ \pi^-$, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

Abstract: To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $\Lambda p$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,\Lambda p)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,\Lambda p)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $\Lambda pn$ final state. The observed $\Lambda p n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $\Lambda p$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $\chi^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $\Gamma_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5, Comment: 12pages, 8 figures

Abstract: An experimental study of the $K^-_{stop}A\rightarrow \Sigma^- p A'$ reaction on $A=^6$Li, $^7$Li, $^9$Be, $^{13}$C and $^{16}$O $p$-shell nuclei is presented. Abstract: The antikaon-nucleon interaction close to threshold provides crucial information on the interplay between spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking in low-energy QCD. In this context the importance of kaonic deuterium X-ray spectroscopy has been well recognized, but no experimental results have yet been obtained due to the difficulty of the measurement. We propose to measure the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium 1s state with an accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV respectively at J-PARC. These results together with the kaonic hydrogen data (KpX at KEK, DEAR and SIDDHARTA at DAFNE) will then permit the determination of values of both the isospin I=0 and I=1 antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths and will provide the most stringent constraints on the antikaon-nucleon interaction, promising a breakthrough. Refined Monte Carlo studies were performed, including the investigation of background suppression factors for the described setup. These studies have demonstrated the feasibility of determining the shift and width of the kaonic deuterium atom 1s state with the desired accuracy of 60 eV and 140 eV., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDAs) encoding valuable new information on hadron structure appear as building blocks in the collinear factorized description for several types of hard exclusive reactions. In this paper, we address the possibility of accessing nucleon-to-pion ($\pi N$) TDAs from $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ reaction with the future \={P}ANDA detector at the FAIR facility. At high center of mass energy and high invariant mass squared of the lepton pair $q^2$, the amplitude of the signal channel $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ admits a QCD factorized description in terms of $\pi N$ TDAs and nucleon Distribution Amplitudes (DAs) in the forward and backward kinematic regimes. Assuming the validity of this factorized description, we perform feasibility studies for measuring $\bar{p}p \to e^+e^- \pi^0$ with the \={P}ANDA detector. Detailed simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as on rejection of the most severe background channel, i.e. $\bar{p}p \to \pi^+\pi^- \pi^0$ were performed for the center of mass energy squared $s = 5$ GeV$^2$ and $s = 10$ GeV$^2$, in the kinematic regions $3.0 < q^2 < 4.3$ GeV$^2$ and $5 < q^2 < 9$ GeV$^2$, respectively, with a neutral pion scattered in the forward or backward cone $| \cos\theta_{\pi^0}| > 0.5 $ in the proton-antiproton center of mass frame. Results of the simulation show that the particle identification capabilities of the \={P}ANDA detector will allow to achieve a background rejection factor of $5\cdot 10^7$ ($1\cdot 10^7$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=5$ GeV$^2$, and of $1\cdot 10^8$ ($6\cdot 10^6$) at low (high) $q^2$ for $s=10$ GeV$^2$, while keeping the signal reconstruction efficiency at around $40\%$. At both energies, a clean lepton signal can be reconstructed with the expected statistics corresponding to $2$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract: Search for the neutron-rich hypernucleus 9LHe is reported by the FINUDA experiment at DAFNE, INFN-LNF, studying (pi+, pi-) pairs in coincidence from the K-stop + 9Be --> 9LHe + pi+ production reaction followed by 9LHe --> 9Li + pi- weak decay. Abstract: This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM-stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy-loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. Abstract: Three candidate events of the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6{\Lambda}H were uniquely identified in the FINUDA experiment at DA{\Phi}NE, Frascati, by observing {\pi}+ mesons from the (K-stop,{\pi}+) production reaction on 6Li targets, in coincidence with {\pi}-mesons from 6{\Lambda}H \rightarrow 6He+{\pi}- weak decay. Details of the experiment and the analysis of its data are reported, leading to an estimate of (2.9\pm2.0)\cdot10-6/K- stop for the 6{\Lambda}H production rate times the two-body {\pi}- weak decay branching ratio. The 6{\Lambda}H binding energy with respect to 5H + {\Lambda} was determined jointly from production and decay to be B{\Lambda} = (4.0 \pm 1.1) MeV, assuming that 5H is unbound with respect to 3H + 2n by 1.7 MeV. The binding energy determined from production is higher, in each one of the three events, than that determined from decay, with a difference of (0.98 \pm 0.74) MeV here assigned to the 0+g.s. \rightarrow 1+ excitation. Abstract: This letter is concerned with the study of the $K^-_{stop}A\rightarrow \pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp A'$ reaction in p-shell nuclei, i.e., $^{6,7}Li$, $^9Be$, $^{13}C$ and $^{16}O$. The $\pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp / K^-_{stop}$ emission rates are reported as a function of $A$. These rates are discussed in comparison with previous findings. The ratio $\pi^-\Sigma^+/\pi^+\Sigma^-$ in p-shell nuclei is found to depart largely from that on hydrogen, which provides support for large in-medium effects possibly generated by the sub-threshold $\Lambda(1405)$. The continuum momentum spectra of prompt pions and free sigmas are also discussed as well as the $\pi^\pm\Sigma^\mp$ missing mass behavior and the link with the reaction mechanism. Abstract: The decay of $\Lambda$-hypernuclei without pion emission, known as Non Mesonic Weak Decay (NMWD), gives an effective tool to investigate $\Delta$S=1 four-baryon interactions. It was theoretically suggested that the two-nucleon induced mechanism could play a substantial role in reproducing the observed NMWD decay rates and nucleon spectra, but at present no direct evidence of such a mechanism has been obtained. The FINUDA experiment, exploiting the possibility to detect both charged and neutral particles coming from the hypernucleus decay, has allowed us to deduce the relative weight of the two nucleon induced decay rate to the total NMWD rate. The value of $\Gamma_{2N}$/$\Gamma_{NMWD}$=0.24$\pm$${0.03_{stat}}^{+0.03_{sys}}_{{-{0.02_{sys}}}}$ has been deduced, with an error reduced by a factor more than two compared with the previous assessment., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The Non-Mesonic (NM) decay of $^4_\Lambda{\mathrm{He}}$ and $^5_\Lambda{\mathrm{He}}$ in two-body channels has been studied by the FINUDA Collaboration. Two-body NM decays of hypernuclei are rare and the existing observations and theoretical calculations are scarce. The $^4_\Lambda{\mathrm{He}}\rightarrow d+d,\; p+t$ decay channels simultaneously observed by FINUDA on several nuclei are compared: the $pt$ channel is the dominant one. The decay yields for the two decay channels are assessed for the first time: they are $(1.37\pm 0.37)\times 10^{-5}/K^-_{stop}$ and $(8.3\pm 1.0)\times 10^{-5}/K^-_{stop}$, respectively. Due to the capability of FINUDA of identifying $^5_\Lambda{\mathrm{He}}$ hypernuclei, a few $^5_\Lambda{\mathrm{He}}\rightarrow d+t$ decay events have also been observed. Abstract: New spectra from the FINUDA experiment of the Non Mesonic Weak Decay (NMWD) proton kinetic energy for 9(Lambda)Be, 11(Lambda)B, 12(Lambda)C, 13(Lambda)C, 15 (Lambda)N and 16(Lambda)O are presented and discussed along with the published data on 5(Lambda)He and 7(Lambda)Li. Exploiting the large mass number range and the low energy threshold (15 MeV) for the proton detection of FINUDA, an evaluation of both Final State Interactions (FSI) and the two nucleon induced NMWD contributions to the decay process has been done. Based on this evaluation, a linear dependence of FSI on the hypernuclear mass number A is found and for the two nucleon stimulated decay rate the experimental value of Gamma2/Gammap=0.43+-0.25 is determined for the first time. Abstract: The FINUDA experiment performed a systematic study of the charged mesonic weak decay channel of $p$-shell $\Lambda$-hypernuclei. Negatively charged pion spectra from mesonic decay were measured with magnetic analysis for the first time for ${^{7}_{\Lambda}Li}$, ${^{9}_{\Lambda}Be}$, ${^{11}_{\Lambda}B}$ and ${^{15}_{\Lambda}N}$. The shape of the $\pi^{-}$ spectra was interpreted through a comparison with pion distorted wave calculations that take into account the structure of both hypernucleus and daughter nucleus. Branching ratios $\Gamma_{\pi^{-}}/\Gamma_{tot}$ were derived from the measured spectra and converted to $\pi^{-}$ decay rates $\Gamma_{\pi^{-}}$ by means of known or extrapolated total decay widths $\Gamma_{tot}$ of $p$-shell $\Lambda$-hypernuclei. Based on these measurements, the spin-parity assignment $1/2^+$ for ${^{7}_{\Lambda}Li}$ and $5/2^+$ for ${^{11}_{\Lambda}B}$ ground-state are confirmed and a spin-parity $3/2^+$ for ${^{15}_{\Lambda}N}$ ground-state is assigned for the first time., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We discuss the usefulness of the double charge-exchange reactions (DCX) for the production of the neutron-rich Lambda-hypernuclei. We believe the (pi-,K+) reaction is one of the most promising DCX reactions, and propose to produce the neutron-rich Lambda-hypernuclei, 6(Lambda)H and 9(Lambda)He, at the J-PARC 50 GeV PS by the reaction (J-PARC E10 experiment). Abstract: To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. Abstract: Momenta spectra of protons emitted following the capture of $K^-$ in $^6$Li and $^{12}$C have been measured with 1% resolution. The $^{12}$C spectrum is smooth whereas for $^6$Li a well defined peak appears at about 500 MeV/$c$. The first observation of a structure in this region was identified as a strange tribaryon or, possibly, a $\bar K$-nuclear state. The peak is correlated with a $\pi^-$ coming from $\Sigma^-$ decay in flight, selected by setting momenta larger than 275 MeV/$c$. The $\Sigma^-$ could be produced, together with a 500 MeV/$c$ proton, by the capture of a $K^-$ in a deuteron-cluster substructure of the $^6$Li nucleus. The capture rate for such a reaction is $(1.62\pm 0.23_{stat} ^{+0.71}_{-0.44}(sys))%/K^-_{stop}$, in agreement with the existing observations on $^4$He targets and with the hypothesis that the $^6$Li nucleus can be interpreted as a $(d+\alpha)$ cluster., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures. Abstract: During the runs of the PS 179 experiment at LEAR of CERN, we photographed an event of antiproton-Ne absorption, with a complete pi+ -> mu+ ->e+ chain. From the vertex of the reaction a very slow energy pi+ was emitted. The pi+ decays into a mu+ and subsequently the mu+ decays into a positron. At the first decay vertex a muon neutrino was emitted and at the second decay vertex an electron neutrino and a muon antineutrino. Measuring the pion and muon tracks and applying the momentum and energy conservation and using a classical statistical interval estimator, we obtained an experimental upper limit for the muon neutrino mass: m_nu < 2.2 MeV at a 90% confidence level. A statistical analysis has been performed of the factors contributing to the square value of the neutrino mass limit., Comment: 18 pages, 5 eps figures

Abstract: We measured a set of $π^\pmΣ^\mp$, $π^0Σ^0$, and $π^-Σ^0$ invariant mass spectra below and above the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold in $K^-$-induced reactions on deuteron. We deduced the $S$-wave $\bar{K}N\rightarrowπΣ$ and $\bar{K}N\rightarrow\bar{K}N$ scattering amplitudes in the isospin 0 channel in the framework of a $\bar{K}N$ and $πΣ$ coupled channel. We find that a resonance pole corresponding to $Λ(1405)$ is located at 1417.7$^{+6.0}_{-7.4}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.1}_{-1.0}$(systematic errors) + $[-26.1^{+6.0}_{-7.9}$(fitting errors)$^{+1.7}_{-2.0}$(systematic errors)]$i$ MeV/$c^2$, closer to the $\bar{K}N$ mass threshold than the value determined by the Particle Data Group., 8 pages, 5 figures
