4. Education in a warming world: Trends, opportunities and pitfalls for institutes of higher education

Abstract

Higher education institutes (HEI) face considerable challenges in navigating how to respond to the escalating and intertwined socio-ecological sustainability crises. Many dedicated individuals working in the sector are already driving meaningful action through rigorous research, teaching, knowledge sharing, and public engagement, while there is a growing consensus that sector-wide change is needed to ensure that aspirational declarations and positive individual actions translate into sustainable and transformative change. This article seeks to contribute to such efforts by illustrating a number of trends, examples, and reflections on how third-level educational institutes can act sustainably. We highlight the potential of five strategies HEI could employ to support the creation of a more sustainable future namely, (i) innovative approaches to climate change education; (ii) research agendas for societal transformations; (iii) providing climate change education for professional development; (iv) supporting public intellectuals; and (iv) investing in whole-systems approaches to greening the campus. The insights are the product of an interdisciplinary working group with members from across Europe, Australia, and the UK. These international examples provide insight and a sense of possibility for future application.

Abstract

Influenza is one of the most common infectious diseases in travellers, especially in those returning from subtropical and tropical regions. In late June 2018 an influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus infection was diagnosed in a 36-years-old man, returned from a travel in Shanghai and hospitalized at the Ospedale Policlinico San Martino, Genoa, Italy, with a diagnosis of fever and an uncommon clinical presentation characterised by a persistent leukopenia. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a closeness with influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 strains circulating in the US in May-June 2018. Abstract

The worldwide spread of a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) since December 2019 has posed a severe threat to individuals well-being. While the world at large is waiting that the released vaccines immunize most citizens, public health experts suggest that, in the meantime, it is only through behavior change that the spread of COVID-19 can be controlled. Importantly, the required behaviors are aimed not only at safeguarding one s own health. Instead, individuals are asked to adapt their behaviors to protect the community at large. This raises the question of which social concerns and moral principles make people willing to do so. We considered in 23 countries (N = 6948) individuals willingness to engage in prescribed and discretionary behaviors, as well as country-level and individual-level factors that might drive such behavioral intentions. Results from multilevel multiple regressions, with country as the nesting variable, showed that publicized number of infections were not significantly related to individual intentions to comply with the prescribed measures and intentions to engage in discretionary prosocial behaviors. Instead, psychological differences in terms of trust in government, citizens, and in particular toward science predicted individuals behavioral intentions across countries. The more people endorsed moral principles of fairness and care (vs. loyalty and authority), the more they were inclined to report trust in science, which, in turn, statistically predicted prescribed and discretionary behavioral intentions. Results have implications for the type of intervention and public communication strategies that should be most effective to induce the behavioral changes that are needed to control the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract

The relationships between subjective status and perceived legitimacy are important for understanding the extent to which people with low status are complicit in their oppression. We use novel data from 66 samples and 30 countries (N = 12,788) and find that people with higher status see the social system as more legitimate than those with lower status, but there is variation across people and countries. The association between subjective status and perceived legitimacy was never negative at any levels of eight moderator variables, although the positive association was sometimes reduced. Although not always consistent with hypotheses, group identification, self-esteem, and beliefs in social mobility were all associated with perceived legitimacy among people who have low subjective status. These findings enrich our understanding of the relationship between social status and legitimacy.

Abstract

The practice and theory of Human Resource Management has made huge progress over the last century; now it has been recognized as a fundamental part of business and it has become the subject of a rich academic and practitioner literature (Kaufman, 2015). The role of the HRM department, previously known as personnel management, has also changed considerably from its origins. From a largely administrative function with very low impact, it has shifted to the present day, where it has the potential to be a source of competitive advantage (Pfeffer, 1997; Wright & Urlich, 2017,). However, the position and role of HR departments have been continuously debated in the HRM practice and literature (Roche & Teague, 2012). The aim is to understand whether (and how) the 4.0 scenario could represent an opportunity to overcome ambiguities and vicious circles, transforming the impact that HR specialists have on people, business and society at large (Strohmeier & Parry, 2014; Bondarouk & Brewster, 2016), and gaining power and legitimacy. Nonetheless, Industry 4.0 could become the further lost opportunity to demonstrate the HR’s ability to truly offer a professional, valuable and credible contribution.

Abstract

Digitization is a disruptive innovation that opens up new business and social opportunities, while at the same time it challenges traditional job design. These challenges require that both people and organization change. Workers should develop new competencies and capabilities, from technological expertise and data analysis capabilities to essential social and emotional skills as well as creative skills (Colbert et al., 2016). This requires organizations to redesign their structures and processes (Kane et al., 2016). In many ways, we may think these developments as positive ones. Industry 4.0 is changing the relationship between workers and machines. What employees used to do is increasingly being done by machines: more and more humdrum and ‘dull’ activities will be performed by machines, while human tasks will be characterized by growing autonomy and empowerment at decreasing costs (Holland & Bardoel, 2016). The 4.0 revolution is also changing the time and space of work: smart working, agile working, new virtual production are only few examples of a new way of design work enabling a better work and life balance for a wider group of employees, as well as, a more efficient way of designing work, assigning clear goals and giving real-time feedback that sustain continuous development and motivation (Sonnentag et al., 2008). On the other hand, both research and practice suggest some potential downsides. Detractors of the 4.0 revolution prophesy that smart machines will replace human work, and that this will happen not only for routine activities, causing an unprecedented job loss and more precarious work arrangements. There are in fact evidence that the possibilities of automation will include cognitive tasks too, thus leading to the worrying question of whether the number of new jobs will be as large as the ones replaced by robots and what will be the jobs where humans will excel. Abstract

According to the "democracy-as-value" hypothesis, democracy has become an ideological belief system providing social value to democratic individuals, groups and institutions, granting legitimacy to their actions (even if dishonest or violent), and protecting them from consecutive punishments. The present research investigates the extent to which this legitimizing process is based on the individual endorsement of democratic principles. Across four experiments, following the misdeed of a (few) group member(s), respondents who valued democratic group organization and democracy in general expressed more lenient retributive justice judgments towards democratic (as compared with nondemocratic) offender groups. These findings shed light on the ways in which democratic ideology infuses justice judgments.

Abstract

This paper argues that a fundamental antagonism between democracy and nondemocracy organises lay thinking on global issues. We review key findings of a long-standing experimental research programme that examined the "Democracy-as-value" hypothesis across a variety of political and social contexts. This hypothesis contends that democracy is an ideological belief system that provides value to democratic individuals, groups, and institutions and thereby grants legitimacy to their actions. Based on procedural justice theories and social representations theory, we contend that western lay perceivers associate democracy with procedural equality and individual autonomy, whereas nondemocracy is associated with ingroup hierarchy and conformity. We discuss how idealised representations of democracy justify global power arrangements and emphasise the paradoxical justification function of democratic values through which nondemocratic forms of social regulation based on physical force are legitimised with the very democratic norms that call for peaceful resolution of conflicts.

Abstract

Background. Is it possible to reach performance equality between boys and girls in a science class? Given the stereotypes targeting their groups in scientific domains diagnostic contexts generally lower girls’ performance and non diagnostic contexts may harm boys’ performance. Aim. The present study tested the effectiveness of a mastery oriented assessment allowing both boys and girls to perform at an optimal level in a science class. Sample. Participants were 120 boys and 72 girls (all high school students). Methods. Participants attended a science lesson while expecting a performanceoriented assessment (i.e. an assessment designed to compare and select students) a mastery oriented assessment (i.e. an assessment designed to help students in their learning) or no assessment of this lesson. Results. In the mastery oriented assessment condition both boys and girls performed at a similarly high level whereas the performance oriented assessment condition reduced girls’ performance and the no assessment condition reduced boys’ performance. Conclusions. One way to increase girls’ performance on a science test without harming boys’ performance is to present assessment as a tool for improving mastery rather than as a tool for comparing performances.

Abstract

In this chapter, we propose to review a series of cooperative learning studies that allow to pinpoint that social skills development is crucial for group work to be efficient in terms of cognitive/academic outcomes and that teachers can further this social skills development with a reasonable investment. We start with some highlights of a research programme showing how easily students can switch to competition even with cooperative instructions. We document this phenomenon at both university and at primary school levels. We then use this set of results to underline the importance of preparing students to cooperate when they have to work together. Finally, we summarise and document the benefits of two short simple interventions, one at university and the other at middle school, developed to address some potential resistance of teachers to invest in the development of social skills. The implications for teachers' ability to accompany cooperative group work are discussed.

Abstract

Sociologists coined the term "anomie" to describe societies that are characterized by disintegration and deregulation. Extending beyond conceptualizations of anomie that conflate the measurements of anomie as 'a state of society' and as a 'state of mind', we disentangle these conceptualizations and develop an analysis and measure of this phenomenon focusing on anomie as a perception of the 'state of society'. We propose that anomie encompasses two dimensions: a perceived breakdown in social fabric (i.e., disintegration as lack of trust and erosion of moral standards) and a perceived breakdown in leadership (i.e., deregulation as lack of legitimacy and effectiveness of leadership). Across six studies we present evidence for the validity of the new measure, the Perception of Anomie Scale (PAS). Studies 1a and 1b provide evidence for the proposed factor structure and internal consistency of PAS. Studies 2a-c provide evidence of convergent and discriminant validity. Finally, assessing PAS in 28 countries, we show that PAS correlates with national indicators of societal functioning and that PAS predicts national identification and well-being (Studies 3a & 3b). The broader implications of the anomie construct for the study of group processes are discussed.

43. Strategic Use of Preference Confirmation in Group Decision Making: The Role of Competition and Dissent

Abstract

The present research investigates the moderating role of goal interdependence and dissent on individual preference confirmation in hidden-profile tasks. We propose that preference confirmation can be used strategically to deal with competition and dissent likely to arise in group decision making. In two studies, participants first received incomplete information about a car accident investigation, and then read a fictitious discussion with two other participants containing full information. The interaction with the fictitious participants was presented either as cooperative or competitive. We predicted and found preference confirmation to be higher in competition than cooperation, when initial preferences were dissenting (Studies 1 & 2), but to be higher in cooperation than in competition, when initial preferences were consensual (Study 2). Also, the increased versus decreased preference confirmation in competition with, respectively, dissent and no dissent were found to be predicted by self-enhancement strategies (Study 2). These findings contribute to a better understanding of the boundary conditions of preference confirmation in hidden profiles and shed a new light on the role of motivated information processing in these tasks.
