Abstract

The neutron-rich nucleus ^{144}Ba (t_{1/2}=11.5  s) is expected to exhibit some of the strongest octupole correlations among nuclei with mass numbers A less than 200. Until now, indirect evidence for such strong correlations has been inferred from observations such as enhanced E1 transitions and interleaving positive- and negative-parity levels in the ground-state band. In this experiment, the octupole strength was measured directly by sub-barrier, multistep Coulomb excitation of a post-accelerated 650-MeV ^{144}Ba beam on a 1.0-mg/cm^{2} ^{208}Pb target. The measured value of the matrix element, ⟨3_{1}^{-}∥M(E3)∥0_{1}^{+}⟩=0.65(+17/-23) eb^{3/2}, corresponds to a reduced B(E3) transition probability of 48(+25/-34)  W.u. This result represents an unambiguous determination of the octupole collectivity, is larger than any available theoretical prediction, and is consistent with octupole deformation.

3. Butler County Community College, Exploring America's Communities. Progress Report.

Abstract

In 1996, Butler County Community College (Pennsylvania) participated in the American Association of Community Colleges' Exploring America's Communities, which works to strengthen the teaching and learning of American history, literature, and culture at U.S. community colleges. Because the local population is overwhelmingly white, the general goal of the Action Plan is to revise course syllabi in American history, fine arts, and American literature so as to include the contributions of minority communities which students might otherwise never know. In American history, new textbooks were chosen, articles for required reading were selected, and the syllabus was revised. In liberal arts, American music was included in the curriculum, students attended a concert, and art students completed projects on American artists. In American literature, new texts that include a broader selection of writers were chosen and the syllabi were revised. Discussions asking students what it means to be an American, what divides us, and what brings us together were held. The three obstacles faced by the program were: the off-campus location of some of the classes interfered with communication, and some instructors' concern with academic freedom. At the time of the report, several courses' syllabi still required revision. Additionally, a study of the inventory/post-test in American history indicated that less change in student knowledge of America's various communities has been gained than was desired. (HAA)

4. Microcomputer Usage at the Community College Level in the State of Kansas.

Abstract

In spring 1992, a study was performed to identify the current use of microcomputers for instruction at community colleges in Kansas. A questionnaire was sent to 20 community colleges, requesting information on subject areas in which computers are used in instruction, types and quantities of computers used, types of operating systems used, use of local area networks, locations of computers, and sources of software. Study findings, based on responses from 18 colleges, included the following: (1) at 18 colleges, microcomputers were being used to teach computer science, data processing, and word processing; (2) 17 colleges taught popular business software, and 15 colleges taught data management programs; (3) other subject areas using computers included basic computer literacy, sciences, reading, arts, and mathematics; (4) 2,307 microcomputers were available for instruction at 14 responding colleges, with the most popular choices being the IBM compatible 386-based PC's and the Apple Macintosh; (5) more powerful 486-based PC's were present in 39% of the colleges, and laptop computers were found in just 28% of the colleges; (6) the most popular operating systems were MS/PC-DOS and the Macintosh systems; (7) the primary location for microcomputers at all colleges was the computer lab, followed by the college library and classrooms; (8) all 18 colleges used commercial software packages, and all but one indicated the use of public domain/shareware types of software; and (9) software written by instructors was used at 12 colleges. Overall, findings indicated that students and educators are becoming more comfortable and proficient in the use of microcomputers. The survey instrument is included. (MAB)

Abstract

Two experiments have been performed at the Accelerator Laboratory of the Department of Physics, University of Jyväskylä, Finland, and are reported here. The first experiment was a recoil-decay tagging study intended to delineate the level scheme of 226U for the first time. The subsequent experiment, the observation of fine structure in the a decay of 230Pu, was to obtain an improved measurement of the excitation energy of the first excited 2+ state, which was tentatively assigned in the first experiment.

7. Plan for Planning: Butler County Community College's Long-Range Strategic Planning System. Revised.

Abstract

In 1985-86, Butler County Community College (BCCC) was awarded a Title III Planning Grant, which allowed the college to develop a long-range strategic planning process. Expected outcomes of the process were to define future directions for BCCC, capitalize upon present and future realities, provide systematic processes whereby the college is able to maintain or change its posture in fulfilling its mission, and achieve other objectives related to institutional image, resource allocation, program coordination, and college administration. The major aspects of the BCCC planning process included the following: discussion of mission and goals, internal assessment, external assessment, values clarification, development of planning assumptions, identification of strategic issues, campus-wide hearings, setting of priorities, and development of unit plans, dean plans, and the college plan. Within BCCC's planning structure is a Planning Council consisting of the five college deans and at least one representative apiece from faculty, staff, community, and the student body. The Council uses internal and external assessment data provided by the Dean of Institutional Research to develop planning assumptions, identify strategic issues, commission position papers, and set institutional priorities. This structure also calls for a close linking of budgeting and planning. Based on a spring 1987 evaluative meeting of the planning council, recommendations for improving the planning process were made, stressing the increased involvement of trustees, the president, and deans. 8. Survey of Butler County High School Seniors, 1988.

Abstract

In 1988, a survey was conducted of Butler County high school seniors to determine their characteristics and goals and assess their knowledge and perceptions of Butler County Community College (BCCC). A 58-question survey was administered to seniors from eight high schools. Surveys were returned by 1,384 students, representing 71% of all high school seniors in the county. Study findings included the following: (1) 47% of the students' parents had graduated from high school, 6% had not, 21% had attended college, 19% held bachelor's degrees, and 7% had earned a graduate degree; (2) 17% of the students believed that they had an A average, 47% reported a B average, 33% a C average, and 4% a D or F average; (3) 75% indicated that they would continue their education after graduation, including 21% who planned to attend a community college; (4) the most desired characteristics of a college were relevant courses with individualized quality instruction, financial aid with a job upon graduation, and a good overall institutional reputation based on high academic standards; (5) 96% of the seniors had heard of BCCC, and the majority of these students believed it to be a low-cost college with available financial aid, transferable courses, and an attractive campus; (6) the most common sources of information about BCCC were friends and BCCC's printed materials; and (7) BCCC was rated as "excellent" or "good" by 49% of the respondents and as "fair" or "poor" by 51%. 9. Survey of 1986 Butler County High School Seniors.

Abstract

In February and March of 1986, Butler County Community College (BCCC), Pennsylvania, conducted a survey of Butler County high school seniors to determine student characteristics, educational plans, influences on plans and college choice, perceptions of BCCC, and information sources. Surveys were administered in class to 1,903 seniors in seven high schools. Study findings, based on a 77% response rate (1,470), included the following: (1) 97% of the respondents were white; (2) an average of 13% of the students' parents did not finish high school, 58% had completed high school, and 29% had attended college; (3) in regard to grade point average, 15% of the students were in the 90 to 100 range, 45% were in the 80 to 90 range, and 37% were in the 70 to 80 range; (4) 817 of the students planned to attend college full-time after graduation, 279 did not plan to attend college, and 182 were undecided; (5) 173 students listed BCCC as their first choice for college attendance; (6) the majority of the seniors from all high schools indicated that they had learned nothing about BCCC through the radio or newspaper; (7) parents and other relatives were the most significant influences on students' future plans; and (8) low cost and closeness to home were the most popular characteristics of BCCC. 10. Butler County Community College Study of Attrition (Full-Time Students): Fall 1984, Spring 1985, Fall 1985.

Abstract

In order to determine the reasons for student attrition at Butler County Community College (BCCC), a questionnaire was sent to each of the 188 students who were enrolled in the fall 1984, spring 1985, or fall 1985 semesters who did not return the following semester. After phone and postcard followups, an 80% response rate was achieved. Study findings included the following: (1) attrition rates were 3.7% in fall 1984 and fall 1985, and 15.5% in spring 1985; (2) 51% of the non-returning students were female and 49% were male; (3) the most commonly cited reason for not returning was "transfer," followed by "other" (which included reasons such as graduation, joining the military, and pregnancy), "moved,""marriage," and "found employment"; and (4) the General Studies Program, the Business Administration Program, and the Biological Science Program had the highest rates of attrition. Abstract

There is sparse direct experimental evidence that atomic nuclei can exhibit stable pear shapes arising from strong octupole correlations. In order to investigate the nature of octupole collectivity in radium isotopes, electric octupole ($E3$) matrix elements have been determined for transitions in $^{222,228}$Ra nuclei using the method of sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation. Beams of the radioactive radium isotopes were provided by the HIE-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The observed pattern of $E$3 matrix elements for different nuclear transitions is explained by describing $^{222}$Ra as pear-shaped with stable octupole deformation, while $^{228}$Ra behaves like an octupole vibrator., Comment: to be published in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

An analysis technique has been developed in order to mitigate energy summing due to sequential short-lived α decays from nuclei implanted into a silicon detector. Using this technique, α-decay spectroscopy of the N=130 isotones Ra218 (Z=88) and Th220 (Z=90) has been performed. The energies of the α particles emitted in the Ra218→Rn214 and Th220→Ra216 ground-state-to-ground-state decays have been measured to be 8381(4) keV and 8818(13) keV, respectively. The half-lives of the ground states of Ra218 and Th220 have been measured to be 25.99(10) μs and 10.4(4) μs, respectively. The half-lives of the ground states of the α-decay daughters, Rn214 and Ra216, have been measured to be 259(3) ns and 161(11) ns, respectively. Fine structure in the α decay of Ra218 has been observed for the first time, populating the 695-keV 21+ state in Rn214. The fine-structure α decay has an α-particle energy of 7715(40) keV and branching ratio bα=0.123(11)%.

Abstract

For certain combinations of protons and neutrons in atomic nuclei, a rise of a reflection asymmetry is expected. Experimental E3 strengths, which as a function of the neutron number peak at around N ≈ 88 and N ≈ 134, indicate enhanced octupole correlations as predicted by theory. Low-energy Coulomb excitation is a highly successful method for establishing the evolution of nuclear shapes, through the measurement of cross sections, to populate excited states that can be directly related to the static and dynamic moments of the charge distribution of the nucleus. A Coulomb excitation experiment at the ALTO facility, Orsay was performed recently to study collective properties of 146Nd and 148Sm. In particular, the strengths of the ⟨3−||E3||0+⟩ and ⟨1−||E3||4+⟩ matrix elements will provide a clear distinction between octupole vibration and rigid deformation. ispartof: Acta Physica Polonica B vol:47 issue:3 pages:923-928 status: published

Abstract

A Pennsylvania project produced a multi-media program designed to increase awareness of and change attitudes about occupational sex-role stereotyping among parents of present and future students in vocational education. The multi-media program consisted of a fifteen-minute color/sound motion picture on nontraditional careers entitled "Vocational Education in a Changing World"; a parents' guidebook presenting similar information in printed form; and a trainer's guidebook to help in publicizing, explaining, and generating discussion about the film and its subject matter. Real people were chosen for the film to add credibility and show natural enthusiasm. Materials were intended to encourage the achievement of true sex fairness in vocational education, decrease the tendency to make occupational choices based upon sex-role stereotyping among students and their parents, and enhance the job satisfaction and performance possibilities for vocational education graduates. 22. Fact Sheets: A Useful Way to Disseminate Community College Institutional Research.

Abstract

For the past several years, a fact sheet format has been used at Butler County Community College (BCCC) to disseminate research findings across the campus. Prepared as early as possible after the start of each semester, the fact sheets are distributed to every full- and part-time college employee, and to the board of trustees and foundation directors. Fact sheets are also given to prospective employees during the interview process and are used to help provide consultants with a quick orientation to various aspects of the college. The fact sheets are easily updated to reflect different emphases in data collection from year to year. Abstract

The structure of neutron-rich 96,98Sr nuclei was investigated by low-energy safe Coulomb excitation of radioactive beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility, CERN, with the MINIBALL spectrometer. A rich set of transitional and diagonal E2 matrix elements, including those for non-yrast structures, has been extracted from the differential Coulomb-excitation cross sections. The results support the scenario of a shape transition at N=60, giving rise to the coexistence of a highly deformed prolate and a spherical configuration in 98Sr, and are compared to predictions from several theoretical calculations. The experimental data suggest a significant contribution of the triaxal degree of freedom in the ground state of both isotopes. Abstract

In the present study, values have been measured in the 208,210Rn and 206Po nuclei through Coulomb excitation of re-accelerated radioactive beams in inverse kinematics at CERN-ISOLDE. These nuclei have been proposed to lie in, or at the boundary of the region where the seniority scheme should persist. However, contributions from collective excitations are likely to be present when moving away from the N=126 closed shell. Such an effect is confirmed by the observed increased collectivity of the transitions. Abstract

γ -ray and fast-timing spectroscopy were used to study levels in 30Al populated following the β− decay of 30Mg. Five new transitions and three new levels were located in 30Al. A search was made to identify the third 1+ state expected at an excitation energy of ∼2.5 MeV. Two new levels were found, at 3163.9 and 3362.5 keV, that are firm candidates for this state. Using the advanced time-delayed (ATD) βγγ (t) method we have measured the lifetime of the 243.8-keV state to be T1/2 = 15(4) ps, which implies that the 243.8-keV transition is mainly of M1 character. Its fast B(M1; 2+ → 3+) value of 0.10(3) W.u. is in very good agreement with the USD shell-model prediction of 0.090 W.u. Abstract

©=0.65(+17-23) eb3/2, corresponds to a reduced B(E3) transition probability of 48(+25-34) W.u. This result represents an unambiguous determination of the octupole collectivity, is larger than any available theoretical prediction, and is consistent with octupole deformation. © 2016 American Physical Society. The neutron-rich nucleus Ba144 (t1/2=11.5 s) is expected to exhibit some of the strongest octupole correlations among nuclei with mass numbers A less than 200. Until now, indirect evidence for such strong correlations has been inferred from observations such as enhanced E1 transitions and interleaving positive- and negative-parity levels in the ground-state band. In this experiment, the octupole strength was measured directly by sub-barrier, multistep Coulomb excitation of a post-accelerated 650-MeV Ba144 beam on a 1.0-mg/cm2 Pb208 target. Abstract

The IS475 collaboration conducted Coulomb-excitation experiments with post-accelerated radioactive 220Rn and 224Ra beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility. The beam particles (Ebeam: 2.83 MeV/u) were Coulomb excited using 60Ni, 114Cd, and 120Sn scattering targets. De-excitation γ-rays were detected employing the Miniball array and scattered particles were detected in a silicon detector. Exploiting the Coulomb-excitation code GOSIA for each nucleus several matrix elements could be obtained from the measured γ-ray yields. The extracted ‹3−||E3||0+› matrix element allows for the conclusion that, while 220Rn represents an octupole vibrational system, 224Ra has already substantial octupole correlations in its ground state. Abstract

We propose to install a storage ring at an ISOL-type radioactive beam facility for the first time. Specifically, we intend to setup the heavy-ion, low-energy ring TSR at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN, Geneva. Such a facility will provide a capability for experiments with stored secondary beams that is unique in the world. The envisaged physics programme is rich and varied, spanning from investigations of nuclear ground-state properties and reaction studies of astrophysical relevance, to investigations with highly-charged ions and pure isomeric beams. The TSR might also be employed for removal of isobaric contaminants from stored ion beams and for systematic studies within the neutrino beam programme. In addition to experiments performed using beams recirculating within the ring, cooled beams can also be extracted and exploited by external spectrometers for high-precision measurements. The existing TSR, which is presently in operation at the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, is well-suited and can be employed for this purpose. The physics cases as well as technical details of the existing ring facility and of the beam and infrastructure requirements at HIE-ISOLDE are discussed in the present technical design report.

Abstract

Using the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN the Coulomb excitation cross sections for the 0+_gs → 2+_1 transition in the beta-unstable isotopes 100,102,104Cd have been measured for the first time. Two different targets were used, which allows for the first extraction of the static electric quadrupole moments Q(2+_1) in 102,104Cd. In addition to the B(E2) values in 102,104Cd, a first experimental limit for the B(E2) value in 100Cd is presented. The data was analyzed using the maximum likelihood method. The provided probability distributions impose a test for theoretical predictions of the static and dynamic moments. The data are interpreted within the shell-model using realistic matrix elements obtained from a G-matrix renormalized CD-Bonn interaction. In view of recent results for the light Sn isotopes the data are discussed in the context of a renormalization of the neutron effective charge.
