Abstract

Computer simulations are becoming an essential tool in many scientific fields from molecular dynamics to aeronautics. In glaciology, future predictions of sea level change require input from ice sheet models. Due to uncertainties in the forcings and the parameter choices for such models, many different realisations of the model are needed in order to produce probabilistic forecasts of sea level change. For these reasons, producing robust probabilistic forecasts from an ensemble of model simulations over regions of interest can be extremely expensive for many ice sheet models. Multi-fidelity experimental design (MFED) is a strategy that models the high-fidelity output of the simulator by combining information from various resolutions in an attempt to minimize the computational costs of the process and maximize the accuracy of the posterior. In this paper, we present an application of MFED to an ice-sheet simulatorand demonstrate potential computational savings by modelling the relationship between spatial resolutions. We also analyze the behavior of MFED strategies using theoretical results from sub-modular maximization.

Abstract

We introduce a method for long-distance maritime route planning in polar regions, taking into account complex changing environmental conditions. The method allows the construction of optimised routes, describing the three main stages of the process: discrete modelling of the environmental conditions using a non-uniform mesh, the construction of mesh-optimal paths, and path smoothing. In order to account for different vehicle properties we construct a series of data driven functions that can be applied to the environmental mesh to determine the speed limitations and fuel requirements for a given vessel and mesh cell, representing these quantities graphically and geospatially. In describing our results, we demonstrate an example use case for route planning for the polar research ship the RRS Sir David Attenborough (SDA), accounting for ice-performance characteristics and validating the spatial-temporal route construction in the region of the Weddell Sea, Antarctica. We demonstrate the versatility of this route construction method by demonstrating that routes change depending on the seasonal sea ice variability, differences in the route-planning objective functions used, and the presence of other environmental conditions such as currents. To demonstrate the generality of our approach, we present examples in the Arctic Ocean and the Baltic Sea. The techniques outlined in this manuscript are generic and can therefore be applied to vessels with different characteristics. Our approach can have considerable utility beyond just a single vessel planning procedure, and we outline how this workflow is applicable to a wider community, e.g. commercial and passenger shipping.

30. A collective narrative practice methodology in the case of LGBTQI+ Muslims

Abstract

Introduction: Narratives of incompatibility predominate in research of LGBTQI+ Muslim identities characterising them as irreconcilable, reflecting wider narratives which continue to depict LGBTQI+ Muslims as a homogenous group experiencing continuous struggle. This study aimed to explore how LGBTQI+ Muslims live with their multiple identities, with the intention of creating collective resources from people's narratives Methods: A collective narrative project recruited participants from social media and an existing community organisation to contribute to a resource that could be shared with other LGBTQI+ Muslims. Data was collected via individual interviews and a group interview. Findings: LGBTQI+ Muslims face significant struggles within both LGBTQI+ and Muslim communities and experience challenges constructing positive identities. While LGBTQI+ Muslims may experience shame and rejection from these communities, they also adopt novel strategies which maintain important relationships while affording them opportunities to resist repeated victimisation. Conclusion: LGBTQI+ Muslims are heavily problematised within dominant social narratives and the complexity of their identity configurations mean that clinical psychologists should be particularly cautious when making assumptions about what interventions are indicated to support their mental wellbeing. Further research should continue to listen carefully to LGBTQI+ Muslims' lived experiences and avoid reinforcing harmful societal narratives when assuming in which contexts LGBTQI+ Muslims may struggle or thrive.

ObjectiveTo investigate maternal immunoglobulins' (IgM, IgG) response to SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and IgG transplacental transfer, to characterise neonatal antibody response to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and to longitudinally follow actively and passively acquired antibodies in infants.DesignA prospective observational study.SettingPublic healthcare system in Santa Clara County (California, USA).ParticipantsWomen with symptomatic or asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy and their infants were enrolled between 15 April 2020 and 31 March 2021.OutcomesSARS-CoV-2 serology analyses in the cord and maternal blood at delivery and longitudinally in infant blood between birth and 28 weeks of life.ResultsOf 145 mothers who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy, 86 had symptomatic infections: 78 with mild-moderate symptoms, and 8 with severe-critical symptoms. Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The Woven EndoBridge Intrasaccular Therapy (WEB-IT) Study is a pivotal, prospective, single-arm, investigational device exemption study designed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the WEB device for the treatment of wide-neck bifurcation aneurysms. METHODS: One-hundred and fifty patients with wide-neck bifurcation aneurysms were enrolled at 21 US and six international centers. Angiograms from the index procedure, and 6-month and 1-year follow-up visits were all reviewed by a core laboratory. All adverse events were reviewed and adjudicated by a clinical events adjudicator. A data monitoring committee provided oversight during the trial to ensure subject safety. RESULTS: One-hundred and forty-eight patients received the WEB implant. One (0.7%) primary safety event occurred during the study-a delayed ipsilateral parenchymal hemorrhage-on postoperative day 22. No primary safety events occurred after 30 days through 1 year. At the 12-month angiographic follow-up, 77/143 patients (53.8%) had complete aneurysm occlusion. Adequate occlusion was achieved in 121/143 (84.6%) subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The prespecified safety and effectiveness endpoints for the aneurysms studied in the WEB-IT trial were met. The results of this trial suggest that the WEB device provides an option for patients with wide-neck bifurcation aneurysms that is as effective as currently available therapies and markedly safer.
