Cosmetic residues have been found in water resources, especially trace elements of precursors, couplers, and pigments of hair dyes, which are indiscriminately disposed of in the sewage system. These contaminants are persistent, bioactive, and bioaccumulative, and may pose risks to living beings. Thus, the present study assessed the ecotoxicity of two types of effluents generated in beauty salons after the hair dyeing process. The toxicity of effluent derived from capillary washing with water, shampoo, and conditioner (complete effluent—CE) and effluent not associated with these products (dye effluent—DE) was evaluated by tests carried out with the aquatic organisms Artemia salina, Daphnia similis, and Danio rerio. The bioindicators were exposed to pure samples and different dilutions of both effluents. The results showed toxicity in D. similis (CE50 of 3.43% and 0.54% for CE and DE, respectively); A. salina (LC50 8.327% and 3.874% for CE and DE, respectively); and D. rerio (LC50 of 4.25–4.59% and 7.33–8.18% for CE and DE, respectively). Given these results, we can infer that hair dyes, even at low concentrations, have a high toxic potential for aquatic biota, as they induced deleterious effects in all tested bioindicators.

Abstract Harassment is a common problem in many institutions, including academic ones. It creates invisible barriers for attracting and maintaining women and other minorities at academia. In this work, we quantify and qualify this problem in one of the biggest universities of Brazil, the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). We applied a spontaneously-responded survey to 25% of its professors, 20% of its staff and 12.5% of its students. Our results present that sexual and moral harassment are very frequent in UFRGS and are not distributed homogeneously among all groups: women, black+parda, and non-heterosexual people are the most common victims. Moreover, the staff has higher percentage of moral harassment victims. We also unvealed an important problem of under-notification, where only around 10% of these cases are reported. We show that victims are afraid of reporting or do not believe in the institutional channels of reporting proposed by the university. We then discuss which type of events are perceived as harassment and the frequency at which they happen with different genders. We finalize the paper with a discussion of our results and recommendations to improve this scenario.

Abstract Crotalaria (Fabaceae) occurs abundantly in tropical and subtropical regions and has about 600 known species. These plants are widely used in agriculture, mainly as cover plants and green manures, in addition to their use in the management of phytonematodes. A striking feature of these species is the production of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), secondary allelochemicals involved in plant defense against herbivores. In Crotalaria species, monocrotaline is the predominant PA, which has many biological activities reported, including cytotoxicity, tumorigenicity, hepatotoxicity and neurotoxicity, with a wide range of ecological interactions. Thus, studies have sought to elucidate the effects of this compound to promote an increase in flora and fauna (mainly insects and nematodes) associated with agroecosystems, favoring the natural biological control. This review summarizes information about the monocrotaline, showing such effects in these environments, both above and below ground, and their potential use in pest management programs.

PURPOSE To generate and present the survey results on critical issues relevant to screening, diagnosis, and staging tools for prostate cancer (PCa) focused on developing countries. METHODS A total of 36 of 300 questions concern the main areas of interest of this paper: (1) screening, (2) diagnosis, and (3) staging for various risk levels of PCa in developing countries. A panel of 99 international multidisciplinary cancer experts voted on these questions to create recommendations for screening, diagnosing, and staging tools for PCa in areas of limited resources discussed in this manuscript. RESULTS The panel voted publicly but anonymously on the predefined questions. Each question was deemed consensus if 75% or more of the full panel had selected a particular answer. These answers are based on panelist opinion not a literature review or meta-analysis. For questions that refer to an area of limited resources, the recommendations consider cost-effectiveness and the possible therapies with easier and greater access. Each question had five to seven relevant answers including two nonanswers. The results were tabulated in real time. CONCLUSION The voting results and recommendations presented in this document can be used by physicians to support the screening, diagnosis, and staging of PCa in areas of limited resources. Individual clinical decision making should be supported by available data; however, as guidelines for screening, diagnosis, and staging of PCa in developing countries have not been developed, this document will serve as a point of reference when confronted with this disease.

PURPOSE A group of international urology and medical oncology experts developed and completed a survey on prostate cancer (PCa) in developing countries. The results are reviewed and summarized, and recommendations on consensus statements for very low-, low-, and intermediate-risk PCa focused on developing countries were developed. METHODS A panel of experts developed more than 300 survey questions of which 66 questions concern the principal areas of interest of this paper: very low, low, and intermediate risk of PCa in developing countries. A larger panel of 99 international multidisciplinary cancer experts voted on these questions to create the recommendations for treatment and follow-up for very low-, low-, and intermediate-risk PCa in areas of limited resources discussed in this manuscript. CONCLUSION The voting results and recommendations presented in this document can be used by physicians to support management for very low, low, and intermediate risk of PCa in areas of limited resources. Individual clinical decision making should be supported by available data; however, as guidelines for treatment for very low, low, and intermediate risk of PCa in developing countries have not been developed, this document will serve as a point of reference when confronted with this disease.

Research involving transgender and gender diverse people (TGD) increased in the last years, mostly concerning healthcare associated to this population. Few studies dedicated their analysis to the impact of parental support on transgender people, even though this is an important aspect in creating a safe environment on which these individuals can build their identity. In addition, the link between family support, TGD identity and homelessness is not completely established. Thus, due to the specificities of the family context of TGD individuals, the aim of this study is to investigate the association between family support and TGD in different moments of the process of gender affirmation. In addition, this study also aims to explore the relationship between a lack of social support and low self-esteem, home abandonment, and dwelling in the street. The survey was designed based on the TransPULSE project and was made available in electronic format. The sample was constituted of 423 TGD residents in two Brazilian states. A Structural Equation Model analysis suggested that the impact of gender affirmation status on homelessness was mediated by parental support, through self-esteem, and the need to move from home. The association between the status of the gender affirmation procedures, family support and self-esteem was significant and indicated that the further TGD individuals advanced in gender affirmation, the more self-esteem and family support they would have. The association between family support and self-esteem indicated that family support was associated with higher self-esteem. Low family support was associated with the willingness to move from home due to one’s TGD status and there was also a significant correlation between low self-esteem and the willingness to move from home due to one’s TGD status. Finally, homelessness was associated with the willingness to move with a large effect size. Limitations include the sample that was constituted by individuals with Internet access and who had more contact with TGD communities. The findings indicate directions for interventions involving TGD people and their families, considering the parental relationship as a critical variable to improve TGD quality of life in the process of gender affirmation.

The purpose of this work was to study four different solvent mixtures intended to increase the yield of the extraction stage of clavulanic acid (CA), which is one of the steps in the purification process. Four central composite rotatable designs (CCRD) were utilized to optimize the solvent mixtures. The variables selected for the factorial design were solvent mixture ratio (mL/mL) and temperature (ºC). The results showed that the yield of CA extracted from fermentation broth with the solvent mixtures of methyl-ethyl-ketone and ethyl acetate, and methyl-isobutyl-ketone and ethyl acetate (44.7 and 50.0%, respectively) was higher than that of the individual ethyl acetate alone (36.5%).

The commercialization of a new species through aquaculture is much more complex than the mastery of the production process, or closing the loop, as it is sometimes referred to. Commercial aquaculture is a layer within the global seafood industry, much as wild capture is; however, it places human control at a much earlier phase in the life cycle of the harvested product. As an important species on both sides of the Atlantic, the commercialization efforts for the culture of Atlantic cod are described for four locations, Norway, United Kingdom, New England, and Atlantic Canada that highlight many similar technical challenges and the progress made from the late 1980s through 2012. We also describe some of the marketing challenges faced and how they differ. Technically, the species has been commercialized. Hatcheries and farms in all four countries were successfully established. However, there are clear differences in access to capital for research and industrial expansion from both the private and public sector, social acceptance of farmed fish, as well as the impacts on sales when marketing farmed cod in the context of a global seafood supply. Lower cost species substitution, from either the farmed or wild catch, is also a factor that can have a significant impact on long-term successful commercialization.

This paper presents a method for modeling the initiation and propagation of the damage in steel structures under combined fatigue loading. An existing model in the literature is used as the main key to the development of the new formulation herein proposed, where a significant computational improvement for the cracking incubation phase under high cycle fatigue (HCF) is achieved. The results show a satisfactory comparison with experimental data available in the literature and the carried parametric simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the model once strength reduction could be estimated after 0, 20, 40, and 60 years of HCF. The reduction of the structural capacity was evaluated by the consideration of the final damage due to a high-intensity dynamic loading at the end of the HCF phase.

PURPOSE: In Brazil, National data regarding the epidemiology of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are scarce. The aim of this study was to describe the demographic, clinical, and pathologic characteristics of RCC diagnosed and treated by members of the SBU - Brazilian Society of Urology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this cross-sectional study, data were collected through an on line questionnaire available to the members of the Brazilian Society of Urology (SBU). Between May 2007 and May 2008, voluntary participant urologists collected data on demographic, clinical and pathological characteristics from patients diagnosed with RCC in their practice. RESULTS: Fifty SBU affiliated institutions contributed with patient information to the study. Of the 508 patients, 58.9% were male, 78.9% were white, and the mean age was 59.8 years. Smoking history, high blood pressure and a body mass index above 30 kg/m2 were present in 14.8%, 46.1% and 17.9% of the patients, respectively. Abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography were the main diagnostic methods. The majority of the cases were localized tumors and metastasis were presented in 9.5% of the patients; 98.4% underwent nephrectomy. Clear cell carcinoma was the most common histological type. In comparison with private institutions, stage IV disease was less frequent among patients treated at public health services (P = 0.033). CONCLUSIONS: RCC in Brazil is more common in white men in their sixth decade of life. Ultrasound is the main diagnostic tool for the diagnosis of clear cell carcinoma and we found that localized disease was predominant. A national registry of RCC is feasible and may provide valuable information.

OBJECTIVES: To assess epidemiologic characteristics of penile cancer in Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From May 2006 to June 2007, a questionnaire was distributed to all Brazilian urologists. Their patients' clinical and epidemiological data was analyzed (age, race, place of residence, history of sexually transmitted diseases, tobacco smoking, performance of circumcision, type of hospital service), as well as the time between the appearance of the symptoms and the diagnosis, the pathological characteristics of the tumor (histological type, degree, localization and size of lesion, stage of disease), the type of treatment performed and the present state of the patient. RESULTS: 283 new cases of penile cancer in Brazil were recorded. The majority of these cases occurred in the north and northeast (53.02%) and southeast (45.54%) regions. The majority of patients (224, or 78.96%) were more than 46 years of age while only 21 patients (7.41%) were less than 35 years of age. Of the 283 patients presenting penile cancer, 171 (60.42%) had phimosis with the consequent impossibility to expose the glans. A prior medical history positive for HPV infection was reported in 18 of the 283 cases (6.36%). In 101 patients (35.68%) tobacco smoking was reported. The vast majority of the cases (n = 207; 73.14%) presented with tumors localized in the glans and prepuce. In 48 cases (16.96%) the tumor affected the glans, the prepuce and the corpus penis; in 28 cases (9.89%) the tumor affected the entire penis. The majority of the patients (n = 123; 75.26%) presented with T1 or T2; only 9 patients (3.18%) presented with T4 disease. CONCLUSION: Penile cancer is a very frequent pathology in Brazil, predominantly affecting low income, white, uncircumcised patients, living in the north and northeast regions of the country.

- Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of high-energy shock waves (HESW) on organs adjacent to the kidney, in the growing rat. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 60 Wistar male rats. Upon completing 30 days of age, a radiopaque marker was placed in the animals' left renal cavity. With 40 days of age, after radiologically confirming the markers' position, the rats were divided into 2 groups: control-group - 30 rats that did not receive shock waves; experimental group- 30 rats exposed to 1000 shock waves of 17.2 KV in intensity. The rats were sacrificed 7, 90 and 180 days after exposure to HESW. The bodily growth was assessed and the analysis of macro- and microscopic morphology of liver, spleen, pancreas, lungs and adrenals. RESULTS: There was no statistical difference in the animals' bodily growth. The microscopic morphologic analysis demonstrated significant alterations in spleen (proliferative changes in the red pulp) and liver (cloudy swelling) of the animals submitted to HESW and sacrificed on the seventh day. These changes completely disappeared in subsequent analyses. CONCLUSION: HESW applied to rat did not inhibit the animals' growth and caused transitory histological lesion in spleen (proliferative changes in the red pulp) and in liver (cloudy swelling of hepatocytes). Such changes were observed only in the group that was exposed to HESW and was sacrificed 7 days following the experiment, presenting spontaneous recovery.

PURPOSE As cancer surgery restarts after the first COVID-19 wave, health care providers urgently require data to determine where elective surgery is best performed. This study aimed to determine whether COVID-19–free surgical pathways were associated with lower postoperative pulmonary complication rates compared with hospitals with no defined pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS This international, multicenter cohort study included patients who underwent elective surgery for 10 solid cancer types without preoperative suspicion of SARS-CoV-2. Participating hospitals included patients from local emergence of SARS-CoV-2 until April 19, 2020. At the time of surgery, hospitals were defined as having a COVID-19–free surgical pathway (complete segregation of the operating theater, critical care, and inpatient ward areas) or no defined pathway (incomplete or no segregation, areas shared with patients with COVID-19). The primary outcome was 30-day postoperative pulmonary complications (pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, unexpected ventilation). RESULTS Of 9,171 patients from 447 hospitals in 55 countries, 2,481 were operated on in COVID-19–free surgical pathways. Patients who underwent surgery within COVID-19–free surgical pathways were younger with fewer comorbidities than those in hospitals with no defined pathway but with similar proportions of major surgery. After adjustment, pulmonary complication rates were lower with COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.2% v 4.9%; adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.62; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.86). This was consistent in sensitivity analyses for low-risk patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade 1/2), propensity score–matched models, and patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 preoperative tests. The postoperative SARS-CoV-2 infection rate was also lower in COVID-19–free surgical pathways (2.1% v 3.6%; aOR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.36 to 0.76). CONCLUSION Within available resources, dedicated COVID-19–free surgical pathways should be established to provide safe elective cancer surgery during current and before future SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks.

BackgroundInterstitial lung disease (ILD) is the major cause of death in Systemic sclerosis (SSc). Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard imaging technique to diagnose ILD and to assess ILD prognosis. ILD extent assessment at lung CT has shown to correlate with functional lung capacity: extensive lung disease (> 20%) correlate with significant lung capacity decline (forced vital capacity ((FVC) ObjectivesThe aim of the study is to evaluate the reliability of an MRI-UTE sequence in the assessment of ILD extent in patients with SS in comparison with standard high-resolution CT images and to correlate the extension with pulmonary function tests (PFT).MethodsPatients with SSc and ILD underwent a CT and UTE-MRI (1.5 T) acquisition on the same day. In the same week, they carried out PFT, with FVC and the diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCo) evaluation. Two thoracic radiologists assessed in consensus, on CT and UTE-MRI, the extent of ILD. Extensions were calculated as the mean percentage of lung involvement, evaluated at five levels, with an approximation of 5%. ILD extension were classified as limited ( 20% or 20% with FVC r. Sensitivity, Specificity, Positive Predictive Value (PPV) and Negative Predictive Value (VPN) of UTE-MRI were also calculated for UTE-MRI in determining ILD extension.ResultsThe mean ILD extension was 20.9% in CT and 17.9 % in UTE-MRI (p-value=0.64). The correlation of ILD extension in CT with FVC and DLCo were significant (r=-0.66 (pConclusionUTE-MRI sequence, compared to CT, has shown high correlation with PFR and comparable ability in identifying patients with extensive ILD. Therefore, UTE-MRI seems new promising imaging sequence for the evaluation of ILD extension in SSc patients. A study of 191 data processing workers undertaken in Porto Alegre, Brazil, in 1989, is presented. The relationship between complaints of loss of memory and their respective scores on cognitive testing in three groups of workers, one with automatized repetitive activities and two others with diversified activities, is analysed. The scores and complaints are compared with the results of a screening test for psychiatric disorders in order to verify the influence of this confounding factor. No significant evidence of cognitive problems was found despite the high prevalence of complaints of memory loss in this population (65,4%). There is a significant statistical association between these complaints and the scores of the psychiatric testing. It is suggested that futures studies should emphasize psychiatric analysis with a view to clarifying the complaints of Data Processing workers.

Fatigue resistance is a key performance for the life-cycle sustainability of materials and structures. Structural members subjected to flexural forces such as spring hinges in origami structures are one of the most commonly existing in nature and engineering practice but predicting their fatigue resistance is a challenge because of complex mechanisms of crack localization, nonstationary amplitudes in the time domain, and the influence of stress gradient due to bending moment. We developed a general lumped damage simulation model for predicting the fatigue life and the associated crack propagation in the full range of elastic and plastic amplitudes. It is found that the developed comprehensive damage model demonstrates a new perspective for fatigue-induced remaining life quantification for engineering structures.

Background:Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a frequent complication and the major cause of death in Systemic sclerosis (SSc). Computed tomography (CT) is the gold standard imaging technique to assess ILD but is burdened by exposure to ionizing radiations that limits its use for the follow-up. MRI sequences with Ultra Short Echo Time (UTE) are promising for ILD.Objectives:We tested two MRI sequences, UTE Spiral VIBE and Compressing Sensing (CS) VIBE, in SSc-ILD, in comparison to chest CT.Methods:SSc patients with suspected-ascertained ILD were evaluated for undergoing CT-MRI examinations in the same day. Two radiologists visually scored the extent of ground glass opacities (GGO), reticulations, honeycombing and consolidations on CT-MRI. The sum of alteration was assumed as ILD extent. A quantitative texture analysis (qCT) was also performed on CT. Cohen’s k was adopted for interreader concordance in ILD detection. MRI sensitivity and specificity in ILD detection were evaluated. Lin’s concordance was adopted to compare extent analysis between readers and between CT (visual and qCT analysis) and MRI sequences.Results:54 patients performed both CT and MRI. MRI interreader concordance was moderate in ILD detection, while ILD and GGO extent analysis showed good or very good concordance. UTE Spiral VIBE had a sensitivity and specificity in ILD detection of 95.8% and 77.8%, while alterations extent analysis obtained a very good concordance with CT for ILD and GGO. CS VIBE showed a sensitivity and specificity in ILD detection of 46.7% and 95.0%, but a slight or fair concordance with CT in all alterations’ extent analysis. Conclusion:MRI UTE Spiral VIBE sequences are helpful in the evaluation of SSc-ILD. Larger cohorts of patients will be needed to confirm that MRI may be useful in clinical practice, reducing the radiological load of chest CTReferences:[1]Romei C, Turturici L, Tavanti L, et al. Microsporidia are emerging as a threat to productivity of commercial finfish aquaculture because of high-prevalence infections facilitated by direct transmission. Infection dynamics are poorly understood for most microsporidians and inability to reliably quantify differential infections impedes disease mitigation strategies that could select broodstock with inherent disease-resistant phenotypes. Moreover, investigations of suitable biomarkers that link immune function with disease susceptibility of fishes are limited. Herein, we observe an inverse relationship between fish growth and infection status with the microsporidium Loma morhua among 50 different Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) family lines. We present a standardized template for quantifying parasite infection intensity, with the spleen being the most reliable organ for comparing natural infections and for monitoring experimental infections. Variability in infection intensities among 50 cod families suggests that differential susceptibility to L. morhua has a genetic basis. Ultra-deep Illumina sequencing identified 299 major histocompatibility class I (MH-I) variants from this regionally restricted 50-family cod population. Variation in Atlantic cod susceptibility might reflect hyper-diversification of MH-I genes and individual variability in the ability to present endogenous pathogen antigens during cell-mediated immune responses. Relevance of MH-I expansion to selective breeding for disease resistance remains poorly characterized. Importantly, differential susceptibility to L. morhua revealed impaired fish growth, resulting in a 14% reduction in fillet mass in susceptible individuals. These data imply that relative resistance to L. morhua exists in cod, that it is heritable, and that broodstock selection could be used to limit the impact of microsporidian infections on growth during finfish aquaculture.

Female summer flounder grow considerably faster than males, and rearing temperature has been shown to influence sex differentiation in related species. The present studies were conducted to examine sex differentiation of post-metamorphic juveniles reared at temperatures conducive for commercial production. In experiments 1 and 2, offspring produced from crosses with meiogynogenetic, sex-reversed males and normal females were raised at 14, 16 or 18°C for ≥300 days or 12°C for 30, 60 or 120 days and then transferred to a male-determining temperature (21°C). In all cases, the fish developed predominantly as phenotypic males (≥74%). In a third experiment, offspring produced from crosses with normal males and females were reared at 15, 17 and 19°C for 111, 227 and 278 days and then transferred to 21°C. Most fish (≥92.1%) developed as phenotypic males irrespective of rearing temperature or length of exposure. Several hypotheses are proposed for these findings and further research is necessary to understand the sex-determining mechanisms in this species before the economic advantages associated with sexually dimorphic growth can be realized.

Summer flounder exhibit sexually dimorphic growth rates, with females growing considerably faster and larger than males. In an effort to produce monosex (all female) populations, meiogynogenetic fish were produced and raised at male-determining temperatures. Upon attaining sexual maturity, spermatozoa characteristics from normal and meiogynogenetic (meiogyn) summer flounder were compared using computer-assisted sperm analysis. Sperm concentration was lower for meiogyn fish, but not when normalized for body weight, and swimming characteristics of each group were similar. In a fertilization trial using pooled eggs from two females, sperm from normal and meiogyn males had equal fertilization success, but fewer embryos produced from meiogyn sperm survived through development. Twenty-four hour survival of hatched larvae was equal from both groups (>96%). Sperm from meiogyn males was used to fertilize eggs from seven domesticated female broodstock during commercial production. Mean fertilization and hatch were 56.0 ± 6.8% and 32.7 ± 8.9%, respectively, resulting in the production of 304,450 larvae.

The summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus L., is a high-value species and considerable research has been conducted to determine practices conducive for its culture. As milt can be limited in this species, experiments were conducted to develop a practical sperm cryopreservation protocol for hatchery use. Two dilution ratios (1:2 and 1:4; sperm:extender), 2 diluents (saline and sucrose-based), 2 cryoprotectants (10% DMSO and 12% glycerol) and 3 freezing rates (−5, −10 and −15°C min−1) were evaluated using differential staining to assess post-thaw sperm survival. Seven combinations of the factors examined reduced post-thaw viability by less than 30%. The average viability of sperm from fresh, pooled flounder milt (67.2 ± 2.9%) was not different from that of thawed milt diluted 1:4 with sucrose diluent (10% DMSO) frozen at −5°C min−1 (38.4 ± 7.7%) and fertilization and hatch success were not different in trials using fresh or thawed, cryopreserved sperm. From these experiments a practical sperm cryopreservation method was developed, but further refinement of the freezing protocol is necessary to optimize results.

ENEA has developed and characterized a high strength glass fibre-epoxy composite as reference material for the manufacture of the two sets of 3 pre-compression rings located at top and bottom of the inner straight leg region of the ITER Toroidal Field (TF) coils. These rings will provide a radial force of about 70 MN/coil at cryogenic temperature pulling the TF coils into contact and reducing toroidal tension in the four outer intercoil structures. The paper describes the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) testing campaign carried out at ENEA Frascati laboratories on six different rings manufactured winding S2 glass fibers on a diameter of 1 m (1/5 of the full scale) by both vacuum pressure epoxy impregnation and filament wet winding techniques. The volumetric glass content was around 70%. The rings were expanded with radial steps of 0.1 mm into a dedicated hydraulic testing machine consisting of 18 radial actuators working in position control with a total capability of 1000 tons. All the mock-ups showed very high tensile strength (1550 MPa is the average of the mean hoop stresses at failure) and a practically constant tensile modulus. The test results are reported and discussed.

Pre-compressions rings have been designed to improve the ITER magnets structural support. They are made of high strength unidirectional S-2 glass fibres wound in an epoxy matrix. In order to obtain very high strength properties, ENEA developed and characterized this composite with a high volumetric glass content (∼68%). Benefits of this solution include high strength, no interference with magnet fields and long expected service life. This work illustrates the mechanical characterization of the material used to manufacture the rings. At first, linear specimens were produced to perform tensile and creep tests. Then, reduced scale ring mock-ups have been fabricated and tested in ENEA Fusion-Laboratories. One ring was used for the machining of several specimens for compression and shear tests. Standard and non standard specimens were machined from different geometric directions (longitudinal, radial and transversal with reference to the fibre–glass direction) and tested at room temperature and at liquid nitrogen (77 K) temperature to complete characterization with compression and shear tests. The experimental campaign has been carried out following as close as possible the related ASTM standards in order to evaluate material strength, Young and shear moduli. Test results showed high mechanical strength of the composite in fibre–glass longitudinal direction but lower values in transversal direction.

In the frame of the development of pre-compression rings for ITER magnet system a unidirectional fiberglass composite has been developed having a ultimate tensile strength (UTS) as high as 2200 MPa at room temperature. During the development of the material a particular grip system has required to be developed, in order to limit the bearing stress on the sample and to obtain a sufficient load to test the sample. To understand the long term creep behaviour room temperature tests have been performed in ENEA Faenza facilities starting in 2007. The long term tests, performed at a constant stress level as high as 80% UTS, showed a behaviour of the material during the test similar to the one of creep tests, although different from the one of metallic materials. In these tests a very low creep strain and very low creep rates, in comparison with the ones of metallic materials, have been recorded, showing a marked dominance of the glass behaviour and a limited influence of the resin on the global behaviour of the composite. From the long term tests, performed at stress levels varying from 63 to 80% of UTS, very different failure times have been recorded for samples loaded at stresses of 75% of UTS and lower and samples loaded at greater stresses. The high stressed samples showed failure times of the order of tenths or hundreds of hours, while the low stresses are all in the order of thousands and more of hours. For the engineering work on the rings the results indicate that at the stress levels considered in the ITER pre-compression rings (50% or less of UTS) the failure time and the deformation of the rings during the ITER operating life are of limited concern. Future activities on this material foresee a set of tests at decreasing stress level (up to 40%), these tests presumably will not lead to an evaluation of the failure time of the material at such a low stress level, however they will give relevant results in order to understand the creep rate of the material at low stress level.

The ITER pre-compression ring system is based on two sets of 3 rings made in fibreglass-epoxy composite and is located on top and bottom of the inner straight leg region. These rings will provide a radial force of about 70 MN/coil (35 MN at the top and 35 MN at the bottom) under cryogenic conditions, pulling the TF coils into contact, reducing the gap between the poloidal shear keys and their keyways during operation and also reducing the toroidal tension in the four outer intercoil structures bands. The paper describes the stress relaxation test performed in ENEA Frascati laboratories on a reduced scale glass fibre-epoxy composite ring. The ring was manufactured with a diameter of 1 m (1/5 of the real scale one) by winding S2 glass fibres then impregnated with epoxy. The volumetric glass content was of 69% and no significant presence of defects was verified by an X-ray survey. The test has been carried out following as close as possible the ASTM standard E 328-86. The ring has been inserted into a dedicated hydraulic testing machine consisting of 18 radial pulling actuators and then loaded up to a ring membrane hoop stress of 800 MPa. The deformation has been maintained constant during the test by inserting a solid steel disk in the machine centre restraining the machine radial motion. Average hoop stress has been daily monitored measuring the force required to lift the ring just free of the constraints during the test period. The ring performed 125 testing days showing no significant stress relaxation and a small reduction of the ring stiffness that appeared mainly in the first days of the test.

Meiogynogenesis and temperature manipulation were used to produce XX male summer flounder broodstock for future production of monosex (all female) populations. Meiogynogens were produced by fertilizing eggs with UV-irradiated (70 mJ/cm2) black sea bass sperm and applying 6-minute pressure shocks (58,600 kPa), two min post-fertilization. From 4 females, 132,000 eggs were produced, of which 95.6 ± 1.8% were viable, 51.0 ± 13.0% fertilized, and 15.9 ± 8.3% hatched. Following metamorphosis, meiogynogens and controls were raised under a low temperature regime (12 °C gradually increased to 20 °C), 21, and 26 °C for up to 376 days post hatch (DPH). Female sex differentiation was greater in meiogynogens (62.5%) and control fingerlings (22.6%) raised under a low temperature regime compared to those raised at the higher rearing temperatures: 0% at 21 °C, and 0 and 3.9% at 26 °C in meiogynogens and controls, respectively. These results suggest that temperature, during the critical phase preceding gonadal development, influences sex differentiation in summer flounder.

Juvenile Atlantic cod Gadus morhua (initial mean weight = 15.6 g) were fed three isonitrogenous, isocaloric diets (55% protein, 16% fat; calculated gross energy ≈ 20.5 MJ/kg) containing dried laver (nori) Porphyra spp. (red algae) to replace 0, 15, and 30% of the fish meal in a commercially available marine finfish diet. After 84 d, no differences in survival, growth, or hepatosomatic index were found among the treatment groups. The fish attained an average weight of 41.0 g, a specific growth rate (SGR) of 1.19%, and a feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.26. The fatty acid composition of the muscle was similar among treatment groups except that arachidonic acid levels were greater in fish given diets with 30% Porphyra replacement. These results indicate that Porphyra spp. at levels up to 30% provide a suitable fish meal replacement in diets for juvenile Atlantic cod.

Interest in cobia, Rachycentron canadum, culture has shown significant growth in recent years, but few hatcheries are available to support this developing industry. To facilitate the transport of cobia between facilities, four 24-h experiments were conducted to examine the effects of density, temperature, and actual versus simulated transport on juvenile cobia (1.5–3.0 g) survival. Mortality during actual transport at fish densities of 5, 10, and 15 kg/m3 (2.9 ± 0.6, 2.9 ± 1.8, and 6.3 ± 0.8%, respectively) did not differ by treatment but was significantly higher than that during simulated transport at each density (0%). No differences in mortality were found following simulated shipping at 19, 21, and 25 C at 15 kg/m3. Significantly greater mortality occurred when juveniles were packed at 25 kg/m3 (10.4 ± 0.7%) than at 20 kg/m3 (1.9 ± 1.6%) and 15 kg/m3 (0.1 ± 0.1%). Recovery following simulated and actual shipping was high in all treatment groups. Under the conditions examined, results indicate that transport density should not exceed 20 kg/m3.

— The black sea bass Centropristis striata L. endemic to the U. S. Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts is a highly sought species that commands a high price in the marketplace. Investigations were undertaken to determine the basic requirements for culture of sea bass larvae and juveniles. Adult black sea bass were captured from the wild and were found to be robust and to adapt well to captivity. Larvae were obtained by strip spawning of these adults and survived and grew at higher rates in seawater supplemented with algae (greenwater) and maintained at 22 C, than in seawater with or without supplemental algae at 18 C. Larvae were provided a diet of rotifers through 12 d post hatch (DPH) and weaned over a 3-d period to enriched Anemia replenished daily to a density of 10 individuals/mL. By 18 DPH, larvae began ingesting a formulated diet for marine finfish and were completely weaned from live feed by 25 DPH, which coincided with the onset of metamorphosis. Juveniles tolerated a range of salinity from 10–32 ppt with the highest growth rate observed at 20 ppt. Culture of larvae and juveniles on a commercial scale was successful using conditions similar to those employed in the laboratory. The findings presented here suggest the potential for commercial culture of this species in the USA.

In the frame of the activities aimed to evaluate the performances of a He cooled divertor in the future fusion power plant, the High Efficiency Thermal Shield (HETS) concept has been proposed. This concept relies on an abrupt change of momentum of the fluid in order to increase the turbulence in the gas, and therefore the heat transfer. The requirements for the power plant divertor are, not only to sustain the required thermal flux (10 MW/m 2 ), but He to have such properties as to be used directly in the energy production cycle and limit the required pumping power to no more than 10% of the divertor thermal power. Analytical studies developed by ENEA and UKAEA showed that the HETS concept can satisfy all the basic requirements. Experimental validations are required for the pressure drop estimates in HETS. Preliminary experiments have been performed using air at room temperature and showed values of pressure drop in line with the parameters used in the calculations. Studies aimed to optimize the shape of the channel, to further reduce the pressure drop are in progress.

The ITER magnet system will be kept in place by a system of pre-compression rings, which have stringent material requirements. The best solution, at the present level of knowledge, is to use a composite material consisting of unidirectional glass fibres in a resin matrix. To study the characteristics of the composite, ENEA performed a series of impregnations using S-2 glass and an epoxy resin matrix. Standard and non-standard specimens were tested both at room and at liquid nitrogen (77 K) temperature. The mechanical strength values were as high as 2200 MPa and the behaviour remained linear practically until failure. A set of specimens will be tested at room temperature with 70–80% of the collapse load in order to verify the creep behaviour of the material. A facility is under construction to test the rings on a scale of 1/5 of the final ITER rings in operating conditions and up to stresses leading to rupture. The test results will supply the information on the behaviour of massive structures in unidirectional fibreglass composite required for the design of the ITER rings.

This contribution presents the results of an experimental study on high temperature stress evolution in brazed Glidcop/W model structures. The investigated sample (23 mm x 23 mm x 8 mm in volume) had been obtained by brazing a W alloy and a Glidcop (Cu alloy) platelet at 650 degrees C using TiCuAg alloy as a filler. Neutron diffraction was utilized to determine the strains, then the stresses in the bulk of the sample, between room temperature and 300 degrees C; unstrained Glidcop and W reference samples were measured as well in the same temperature range. The measurements were carried out at the D1A diffractorneter of the High Flux Reactor at the Institut Laue Langevin, Grenoble. It is found that the residual stresses present at room temperature in the as-brazed sample vanish almost completely at 300 degrees C that provides relevant engineering information such as the zero strain temperature.
