Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) primarily affects the epithelium of the airways. With the increasing involvement of dermatologist in management of this crisis, cutaneous symptoms gained more and more attention. In this review, we will describe cutaneous symptoms of patients of all ages in association with COVID-19. We will focus on such disorders that are caused by direct action of SARS-CoV-2 on tissues, complement, and coagulation system and on nonspecific eruption of the systemic viral infection. Drug-induced reactions are only mentioned in the differential diagnoses. Although more systematic investigations are warranted, it becomes clear that some symptoms are clinical signs of a milder COVID-19 course, while others are a red flag for a more severe course. Knowledge of the cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19 may help in early diagnosis, triage of patients, and risk stratification., (© 2020 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Dupuytren contracture (DC) is predominantly an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hypertrophy and contraction of the palmar fascia that results in tethered flexion of the affected digits. It has its highest prevalence in the North European population or in people of Viking descent, and its incidence is growing with age. DC shares a common inheritance mode, predisposing factors, comorbidities, pathophysiology, and evolution with Ledderhose disease, Garrod knuckle pads, and Peyronie disease. Nonmelanoma skin cancer also has a higher incidence in the population of North European phenotype and apparently a common genetic polymorphism. Psoriasis shares many risk factors and comorbidities with DC and has a higher prevalence in patients with DC. We suggest a close relationship among DC, some skin malignancies, and psoriasis. The occurrence of second primary cancers was explored in patients with squamous cell cancer of the skin (SCC). The excess incidence subsequent to SCC was mainly in cancers related to sunlight and smoking, and in lymphoproliferative malignancies, it was largest (10-fold) in salivary gland cancer.

Smoking is without doubt one of the greatest causes of avoidable illness and death in the modern world. Most well known is the relationship between smoking and numerous cancers, cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease. Smoking and most especially nicotine, are, however, sometimes beneficial in certain diseases, including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, allergic alveolitis, nausea and vomiting of pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, fibroids, carcinoma of body of uterus, ulcerative colitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, aphthous stomatitis and ulceration, pemphigus, herpes simplex and acne. In the immensely justifiable enthusiasm to discredit this dangerous activity, the mechanisms behind these beneficial effects tend to have been un-discussed or ignored. It is the aim of this paper to spur interest in the reasons for these effects. If the mechanisms are elucidated, therapeutic advances may be possible.
