Se investigó la relación entre el colesterol total (Colt) y la dopamina (DA) a fin de disponer de un examen accesible en consulta como es la medición del colesterol total (Colt) de manera de proyectar el comportamiento de la DA sérica. Se determinó el Colt a 50 caninos y con base a los resultados se formaron tres grupos estudio, Grupo I: 6 pacientes con Colt entre 77 y 200 mg/dl; Grupo II: 6 pacientes entre 250 y 300 mg/dl; Grupo III: 6 pacientes entre 400 y 470 mg/dl. A los 18 pacientes se les midió la DA sérica a través de HPLC acoplado a un detector electroquímico. Se encontró una amplia distribución de datos respecto de la determinación de Colt (291.8 ± 62.0 mg/ dl) y DA (68.8 ± 17.8 μg/ml) con una baja correlación entre ellos. El análisis por grupo de estudio muestra una mayor correlación de DA para bajas concentraciones de colesterol sérico, y el análisis de pendientes muestra que la variación en la concentración de DA es mayor ante pequeñas variaciones de colesterol en el grupo II., The relationship between total cholesterol (Colt) and dopamine (DA) was investigated for the possibility of having an accessible exam in consultation such as the measurement of total cholesterol (Colt) to project the behavior of serum DA. The Colt was determined in 50 dogs and based on the results three study groups were formed, Group I: 6 patients with Colt between 77 and 200 mg/dl; Group II: 6 patients between 250 and 300 mg/dl; Group III: 6 patients between 400 and 470 mg/dl. Serum DA was measured in the 18 patients through HPLC coupled to an electrochemical detector. It was found a wide distribution of data regarding the determination of Colt (291.8 ± 62.0 mg/dl) and DA (68.8 ± 17.8 μg/ml) with a low correlation between them. The analysis by study group shows a greater correlation of DA for low concentrations of serum cholesterol, and the analysis of slopes shows that the variation in the concentration of DA is greater in cases of small variations of cholesterol in group II.

Traces of certain heavy metals are crucial for the metabolism of living beings, but poisoning occurs when their concentration increases. On the other hand, heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium lack functionality in higher organisms, resulting in considerable toxicity. Their long-term persistence is an environmental issue, being adsorption an alternative for the removal of metal pollutants, for example in wastewater. Adsorption has many advantages, such as high efficiency, simple design, low toxicity and reusable materials. Among the adsorbents, hydrogels feature improved resistance and high levels of swelling, comparable in costs to other common materials. In this work, we synthesized a copolymer of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAa) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and evaluated its lead (II) adsorption capacity. The copolymer poly(HEMA-co-DMAa) was synthesized by a free-radical type bulk copolymerization of equal volumes of each monomer. The copolymer was characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, and Raman spectroscopies, and by the temperature and pH dependant-swelling effect of the hydrogel. Quantification of the removed Pb2+ from probe solutions was performed by a UV spectrophotometric method as proposed by Krzek et al. Results suggest that at equilibrium, the amount of sorbed Pb(II) increased as the probe solution also increased (gradually from 10 to 200 ppm). Raman and 13C spectroscopies confirmed effective copolymerization between HEMA and DMAa. The p(HEMA-co-DMAa) copolymer featured a swelling capacity up to 3.6 times their weight of water and exhibited a LCST in the range of 308–340 K with its geometric center around 313 K. In conclusion, a thermo-and-pH-responsive copolymer was obtained from the HEMA and DMAa monomers with LCST at 313 K and pH critical point at pH = 8, featuring efficient Pb(II) adsorption capabilities. The synthesized p(HEMA-co-DMAa) is promising for applications in heavy metals adsorption in aqueous systems with a broad range of pH and temperature, featuring resistance on adsorption and desorption cycles without mechanical degradation.

An efficient one-vial method is described for the synthesis of porous frameworks from copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate with N,N-dimethylacrylamide in various monomers ratios. Characterization, swelling and sorption studies were performed for the materials obtained. A proof of concept for the use of porous membranes on QCM-type biosensors design was performed. Copolymerization between HEMA and DMAa was confirmed through ATR-FTIR and 1H NMR, while thermal analyses performed by TGA featured a dependence between the decomposition temperature and monomers ratio. Copolymers without cross-linker were unstable in water immersions, compromising their applicability. Thus, copolymer morphology was studied by adding a cross-linker agent (EGDMA). Swelling and sorption kinetics were evaluated by using two model molecules: methylene blue and lead (II) ions from aqueous solutions. We observed that swelling capacity is directly related to the cross-linking agent ratio, and DMAa content of the copolymer also. Finally, a copolymer with 50/50 mol%:HEMA/DMAa and 5 mol%:EGDMA (S4 copolymer) was selected as a covering membrane on the gold surface of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) to explore its potential as a material for the development of QCM-sensors. In conclusion, the copolymeric porous frameworks, based on N,N-dimethylacrylamide- and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, are suitable for remediation and adsorption applications, including the support recognition probes in biosensors.

Dyes from wastewater have a negative impact on health and environment, even at low concentrations. Several methods have been proposed for their removal, one of them is using hydrogels as adsorbents for wastewater treatment. In this work, we propose N,N-dimethylacrylamide and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymer (p(HEMA-co-DMAa)) as an adsorbent alternative. Swelling behavior as function of pH and temperature was studied. Morphological characterization of crosslinked copolymer and its hydrogel structure were performed by SEM analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. Swelling measurements and sorption studies were made using methylene blue (as cationic dye model) under different medium pH. Results from confocal images of swollen p(HEMA-co-DMAa) in methylene blue solutions indicate a macroporous material formed. The dye diffuses homogeneously through the entire hydrogel during swelling. The p(HEMA-co-DMAa) hydrogels were able to uptake up to 3.6 times their weight of water depending on temperature; the lower the equilibrium temperature the higher the water uptake. P(HEMA-co-DMAa) hydrogels adsorption capacity is competitive compared with other adsorbents already reported. It was determined that the LCST of the hydrogel at 321 K and the formation of a complex at pH = 8. The optimal removal time was at 4 h after the copolymer was added. The hydrogel was stable (as suggested by FTIR spectrum) and able to uptake methylene blue in a wide pH range. Therefore, it is suitable as adsorbent alternative; additionally, the p(HEMA-co-DMAa) hydrogels would be environmentally friendly due to their biocompatibility and non-cytotoxicity.

El embalse del Guájaro, en el norte de Colombia, es un sistema hídrico abastecido por un canal artificial (el canal del Dique) a través de un dispositivo de compuertas. Durante las últimas décadas, ha presentado problemas de aprovechamiento excesivo, por lo cual resulta necesario regular las estructuras hidráulicas que abastecen este cuerpo de agua, ya que desempenan ˜ un papel importante en el manejo de los niveles, los cuales, a su vez, repercuten en la oferta hídrica. Como medida de gestión para la sostenibilidad del embalse se ha desarrollado este trabajo, en que se presenta la implementación de un modelo hidrodinámico bidimensional (modelo EFDC Explorer), así como su calibración mediante la comparación de series temporales de los niveles de agua del embalse con los resultados de las velocidades medidas y las calculadas por el modelo, durante 2 períodos climáticos distintos (secas y lluvias), para contribuir con una herramienta computacional a la explotación sostenible del Hidrosistema Canal del Dique-Embalse El Guájaro. Las comparaciones realizadas mostraron un buen comportamiento y un buen ajuste entre los valores medidos y los simulados por el modelo, basados en los resultados cuantitativos de fiabilidad (Nash-Sutcliffe). Se considera que los resultados obtenidos son bastante satisfactorios y permiten estimar condiciones para la restauración, el aprovechamiento y el uso sostenible de este sistema hídrico The reservoir of Guájaro, in northern Colombia, is a water system supplied by an artificial channel (the Canal del Dique) through a gate device. During the last decades, it has presented problems of excessive use, for which it is necessary to regulate the hydraulic structures that supply this body of water, since they play an important role in the management of the levels, which, in turn, have an impact in the water supply. As a management measure for the sustainability of the reservoir, this work has been developed, in which the implementation of a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model (EFDC Explorer model) is presented, as well as its calibration by comparing time series of the water levels of the reservoir with the results of the measured speeds and those calculated by the model, during 2 different climatic periods (dry and rainy), to contribute with a computational tool to the sustainable exploitation of the Hidrosistema Canal del Dique-El Guájaro Reservoir. The comparisons made showed a good behavior and a good fit between the measured values ​​and those simulated by the model, based on the quantitative reliability results (Nash-Sutcliffe). It is considered that the obtained results are quite satisfactory and allow to estimate conditions for the restoration, the aprovechamiento and the sustainable use of this hydric system

Eryngium amethystinum (amethyst sea holly) is a herbaceous plant commonly grown as an ornamental perennial in U.S.D.A. hardiness zones 3 to 8. The plant thrives in dry areas with infertile soils and the flowers are often used in dried floral arrangements. Canna spp. (Canna), soft perennials (U.S.D.A. zone 9 and above), are becoming popular flowering plants because of their bright flowers and spectacular foliage. There are a variety of species that fall under the heading Canna spp., of which the most popular are C. glauca, C. indica, C. edulis, and C. iridiflora. Hybrids of Aquilegia (garden columbine), a hardy perennial (U.S.D.A. zones 3 to 9), flower in late spring through early summer. The genus is made up of a wide variety of cultivars. E. amethystinum exhibiting severe mosaic, yellowing, and stunting, along with Canna plants exhibiting severe stunting, chlorotic and distorted foliage, and mosaic, and garden columbine plants exhibiting stunting, leaf curl, chlorosis, and mosaic, collected from commercial plantings throughout the central Ohio area, were analyzed for the presence of virus infection with viral-associated, double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) analysis. dsRNA analysis resulted in a banding profile typical of that seen with members of the cucumovirus family of plant viruses. Plants positive for cucumovurus-like dsRNA were tested with a direct antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). ELISA results confirmed the presence of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) in all symptomatic plants tested. No evidence of dsRNA or CMV was found in any of the asymptomatic plants tested. Because all of these hosts are common in the perennial garden, they could serve as a reservoir host of CMV for other plants in the garden. This is the first report of CMV in E. amethystinum, Canna spp., and Aquilegia hybrids in Ohio.

RESUMEN Objetivo Describimos un brote por Klebsiella pneumoniae productora de β-lactamasas de espectro extendido multirresistente (KPN-BLEE-MDR) y el impacto de las medidas de control. Material y métodos Revisamos las historias clínicas de los pacientes con aislamiento de KPN-BLEE-MDR durante 2013-2016 con resistencia a fluoroquinolonas, aminoglucósidos, fosfomicina y nitrofurantoína, sensibilidad a imipenem, meropenem, colistina, tigeciclina y variable a ertapenem y cotrimoxazol (Vitek-2). La relación genética entre 35 aislados se estableció mediante PFGE y MLST. En enero de 2016 se implantaron medidas para el control del brote. Resultados Detectamos 269 pacientes colonizados y/o infectados por KPN-BLEE-MDR con un fenotipo de resistencia común; las cepas estudiadas portaban el gen blaCTX-M-15 y formaban un único clúster perteneciente al ST11. El brote se detectó a finales de 2015, con origen en 2013 en una residencia de mayores. La adquisición de las cepas fue: 6% comunitaria, 37% hospitalaria (76% en medicina interna) y 57% relacionada con asistencia sanitaria (78% de ingresos en el último año). El 94% presentó al menos una patología de base, el 90% había recibido antibióticos previamente y el 49% presentó algún tipo de instrumentación. Tras implantar las medidas de control el número de colonizados/infectados trimestral pasó de 29 a 15. Conclusiones En 2015 detectamos un brote monoclonal de KPN-CTX-M-15-MDR relacionado fundamentalmente con la asistencia sanitaria. El éxito de su difusión se debió al retraso en su detección y a que la mayoría de los pacientes había recibido antibióticos previamente. Las medidas adoptadas para su control redujeron en un 50% el número de aislamientos.

BACKGROUND Probable unresectable Glioblastomas (GB) diagnosed by imaging techniques withouth anatomo-pathological (ap) confirmation could be treated under standard treatment. We reported the outcomes from this strategy in our center after tumor board evaluation. MATERIAL AND METHODS From January/10 to September/16, 303 patients (pt) with GB were assessed by tumor board, during the same period 66 patients were consecutive analyzed with suspected GB by radiological criteria without histological diagnosis. We focus in the last group and analyzed the demographic/radiological data, non-biopsy causes, treatment type (concomitant Radio-Chemotherapy (RT/Ch), exclusive RT or Ch or Best supportive care (BSC)), Karnofsky index (KI) and degree of comorbidity (Charlson index (CI)). RESULTS Sixty six patients, 17.88% of the total GB cases (with/without ap). Average age: 77 years (33–91). Biopsy: non-diagnostic in 4pt. No biopsy: 62pt; due to non medical indication (71%), localization (22.7%), voluntary (4.5%). Treatment Type: Active: 43.93%, without biopsy due to non-medical indication (44.8%) and localization (41.37%). BSC: 53.03%, without biopsy due to non-medical indication 82.85%, localization 8.5%, voluntary 5.7%. Overall survival: 11.65 months in patients with active treatment and 4.8 months in BSC, greater benefit in CONCLUSION The diagnosis of GB by radiological criteria with the new imaging techniques has a good diagnostic-therapeutic correlation. In cases where surgical intervention is not possible, standard treatment offers good results. Age and KPS are variables that allow predicting a better evolution course. Although it was not possible to obtain a histological diagnosis, in this type of cases liquid biopsy could contribute to diagnosis this type of lesions inaccessible to biopsy.

La diferenciación histológica de las zonas de la caries dentinal descrita por Fusayama en 1945 ha dado lugar al desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías para su tratamiento, basándose en un enfoque más conservador y preventivo, y teniendo como objetivo alargar el tiempo funcional del órgano dental dentro de la cavidad oral en condiciones óptimas. La Odontología Mínimamente Invasiva es una corriente que propone técnicas alternativas al tratamiento convencional de la caries y que implican la eliminación selectiva de dentina infectada por bacterias, preservando dentina afectada sin microorganismos y con capacidad remineralizable; entre estas técnicas encontramos la remoción químico-mecánica. El éxito en la aplicación de este método radica en la manipulación correcta de la técnica y se encuentra estrechamente relacionado con la elección del material que formara la interfase diente-adhesivo-restauración; aquellos que apuestan por una odontología ultraconservadora han realizado gran cantidad de estudios para sustentar resultados clínicos favorables.

Face localization is the first step in several applications such as face tracking, person identification, expression recog- nition and eye tracking. Face localization can be performed by segmentation using the color of the skin. Color images can be represented in several color models. This work presents a performance comparison between several color models including RGB, HSI, CIELab and YCbCr. The best performance in terms of classification error is achieved by the HSI and YCbCr models. However, due to the fact that all images are capture in the RGB color model, a transformation be- tween this model and the other models must be performed. The best performance in terms of execution time is achieved by the YCbCr model. An important speed-up can be achieved by downscaling the original image. Results show that, in the case of the HSI model, a downscale factor can speed up the process up to a 28% while a factor of 4 can speed up the process as much as 68%.

We prove that a convex subcomplex of a spherical building of type F4 or E6 is a subbuilding or the automorphisms of the subcomplex fix a point on it. Our approach is differential-geometric and based on the theory of metric spaces with curvature bounded above. We use these techniques also to give another proof of the same result for the spherical buildings of classical type., 34 pages. An intrinsic version of the results has been added. A comparative cytogenetic analysis showed that B. antartandica, B. leptopus, B. nibaldoi and B. taeniata share the same diploid number 2n = 26, but not the same fundamental number (FN), which was 52 in B. leptopus and 50 in the other three species. The karyotype of B. nibaldoi, including C‐band patterns and locations of the NORs, are described for the first time. The C‐band patterns were species‐specific and were helpful in distinguishing taxa. Batrachyla leptopus can be distinguished from its congeners by the absence of telocentric chromosomes and by secondary constrictions in the long arms of pair 6 and short arms of pairs 7 and 11. The chromosomal data suggest that Batrachyla might be a paraphyletic genus.

Principal strain orientations (minimum horizontal compression—ex and maximum horizontal compression—ey) were established at three different types of plate tectonic boundary: two transform faults, an oceanic ridge located on the Southeast Indian Ridge and a trench located close to the South Sandwich Archipelago. To establish the strain patterns in each zone, 104 earthquake focal mechanisms (centroid-moment tensor solutions for earthquakes with mb≥4; Harvard seismology data, CMT) were examined by fault population analysis. Despite the existence of only one tectonic process that controlled deformation in these zones (divergence, convergence or passive displacement), and only one main strain tensor, several coeval strain ellipsoids were found. These differed from the main strain tensor in the location of the principal strains. In general, permutations were observed between the principal strains, i.e., interchanges between the location of the principal strain axes maintaining the strain ellipsoids in the same 3D orientation. Only in some cases were changes in the ellipsoid orientation associated with major structures.

The focal mechanisms located around the Scotia plate were examined by fault population analysis to calculate both the trends of the maximum horizontal shortening on the plate and the orientations of its associated faults. The results show that both the northern and southern boundaries of the Scotia plate (the north and south Scotia ridges) are currently undergoing left-lateral movement. This movement induces a left-lateral shear couple in the whole plate, with a maximum horizontal NE–SW shortening direction. The established fault orientations and fault classes closely match the predicted structural pattern of a theoretical shear couple that includes the entire Scotia plate. The stress trajectories deduced from finite element modeling also agree with the proposed left-lateral shear couple model; the calculated stress trajectories are characterized by a homogeneous NE–SW compression direction over the whole Scotia plate. This shear model also explains the slip of recent tectonic structures found at the boundaries of the Scotia plate and suggests the possibility of reactivation of its former tectonic structures.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as propriedades físico-químicas e antimicrobianas de um cimento endodontico resinoso contendo óleo de copaíba. Os cimentos foram formulados em três concentrações do óleo (0,5%, 1% e 2%). O grupo de controle negativo foi um cimento sem óleo e o comercial Real Seal® (Sybronendo, Orange, EUA). O controle positivo foi o inóculo bacteriano. A atividade antimicrobiana foi avaliada através da determinação da concentração inibitória mínima (MIC) e frente aos testes de contato direto (TCD). Para avaliar as propriedades físico-químicas foram realizados os ensaios de escoamento, alteração dimensional, tempo de presa e radiopacidade, estabelecidos de acordo com a norma ISO 6876. O grau de conversão foi medido por espectroscopia no infravermelho médio por transformada de Fourier (FTIR). Para o MIC, os resultados contra S. aureus foram de 19,53 µg/ml e os demais foram de 4,88 µg/ml. No TCD, o cimento contendo 0,5% de óleo de copaíba apresentou o maior efeito antimicrobiano em 24h contra E. faecalis, no teste contra S. aureus os cimentos contendo o oleo são superiores ao comercial em 24h. O escoamento e a alteração dimensional foram semelhantes ao cimento comercial, o tempo de presa e grau de conversão foram maior do que o comercial, somente a radiopacidade obteve resultado inferior. Logo, os cimentos contendo óleo de copaíba revelaram atividade antimicrobiana em 24h em todas as concentrações testadas. Em especial, o cimento contendo 0,5% de copaíba. No entanto, é necessário o ajuste da radiopacidade, porque não estava de acordo com a norma ISO 6876.Palavras-chave: Obturação do Canal Radicular. Cimentos de Resina. Atividade Antimicrobiana.

Double petunia plants expressing virus-like symptoms were collected in greenhouses and garden centers throughout Ohio in Spring 1997 and 1998 in an effort to determine the frequency and distribution of petunia viruses present in the state. Direct antibody-sandwich and indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were conducted with commercial antisera made against 13 viruses, a potyvirus kit capable of detecting 80 different potyviruses, and our antiserum raised against a tobamo-like virus inducing severe mosaic in double petunia. Viral-associated double-stranded ribonucleic acid (dsRNA) analysis and light microscopy for detection of inclusion bodies were also carried out. ELISA, dsRNA analysis, and light microscopy revealed the presence of tobacco mosaic tobamovirus, an unknown tobamo-like petunia virus, tomato ringspot nepovirus, tobacco streak ilarvirus, and tobacco ringspot nepovirus. Tomato aspermy cucumovirus, tomato spotted wilt tospovirus, impatiens necrotic spot tospovirus, alfalfa mosaic virus, cucumber mosaic cucumovirus, potato virus X potexvirus, and chrysanthemum B carlavirus were not detected. No potyviruses were identified. A number of plants with virus-like symptoms tested negative for all viruses.

In this work, we showed experimental and theoretical results of the characterization of a spatial light modulator based in a nematic liquid crystal display Sony model LCX038ARA with electric field excitation. The parameters: effective molecular twist and equivalent retardation are determinated using the retarder-rotor technique in the amplitude-coupled regime.

Mysticeti whales modify their calls in response to an increase in noise level within their environment. This is particularly important since environmental noise has been increasing continuously in the last decades. In the case of Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera edeni), previous studies of its predominant call, Be4, have exposed differences in the duration of its main component (f0) for northern and southern areas of the Gulf of California (GC). The objective of this research is to determine if the differences found among Be4 calls (f0, duration, and energy distribution) are influenced by the noise levels in those areas. Results based on the characterization of Be4 Call and noise show that northern noise level is intense in the octave frequency band centered around 30 Hz, and could mask the 30 Hz component. This kind of noise is rare in the south (5%) and when it was present, the 30 Hz component was not registered, which might be an adaptation to noise. An 18-year-old girl presented with a headache and behavioural changes. She was found to have a frontal mass. Neuroimaging revealed an intra-axial mass, located at the left frontal cortical/subcortical region approximately 6×7, 5×7, 5 cm (TxApxL), having a heterogeneous density with cysts and calcification. She had total gross excision of the neoplasm. Histopathological examination revealed an anaplastic ependymoma. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation, a molecular cytogenetic test, reported deletion of 1p without deletion of 19q. The patient had a good postoperative improvement.

The chromosomes of the Chilean frog Eupsophus insularis are described for the first time. This species has a chromosome number of 2n = 30, and based on the karyotype it is concluded that E. insularis is closely related to E. migueli. E. insularis has an XX/XY system of sex determination, and pericentromeric constitutive heterochromatin is present in all chromosomes except in the Y chromosome. It is postulated that the Y chromosome is derived from a small ancestral metacentric chromosome that lost its heterochromatic segment.

This work shows experimental and theoretical results of the characterization of a nematic liquid-crystal spatial light modulator Sony model LCX038ARA for the parameters angle of molecular rotation, the birefringence and angle of the molecular axis, using the retarder-rotor model without electric field applied in the amplitude regime-coupled.

A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 7.0 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity from p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1: 96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. No evidence of such a resonance is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of Higgs boson mass. The limits are interpreted in the context of the standard model and one fermiophobic benchmark model where the data exclude fermiophobic Higgs bosons with masses below 114 GeV/c(2) at a 95% Bayesian credibility level.

A study of the substructure of jets with transverse momentum greater than 400 GeV/c produced in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and recorded by the CDF II detector is presented. The distributions of the jet mass, angularity, and planar flow are measured for the first time in a sample with an integrated luminosity of 5.95 fb(-1). The observed substructure for high mass jets is consistent with predictions from perturbative quantum chromodynamics.
