Abstract: With the aim of measuring the $^{235}$U(n,f) cross section at the n_TOF facility at CERNover a wide neutron energy range, a detection system consisting of two fission detectors and threedetectors for neutron flux determination was realized. The neutron flux detectors are RecoilProton Telescopes (RPTs), based on scintillators and solid state detectors, conceived to detectrecoil protons from the neutron-proton elastic scattering reaction. This system, along with afission chamber and an array of parallel plate avalanche counters for fission event detection, wasinstalled for the measurement at the n_TOF facility in 2018, at CERN.An overview of the performances of two RPTs — especially developed for this measurement — and of theparallel plate avalanche counters are described in this article. In particular, the characterizationin terms of detection efficiency by Monte Carlo simulations and response to neutron beam, the studyof the background, dead time correction and characterization of the samples, are reported. Theresults of the present investigation show that the performances of these detectors are suitable foraccurate measurements of fission reaction cross sections in the range from 10 to 450 MeV. Abstract: The measurement of the 235U(n,f) reaction cross section in the neutron energy region 10 MeV to 500 MeV was carried out at the CERN n_TOF facility. The experimental campaign, completed in 2018, provided precise and accurate data on the fission reaction relative to neutron-proton elastic scattering. A description and characterization of the used setup for the simultaneous measurement of fission fragments and neutron flux is reported here.

3. Pulse radiolysis study on the reactivity of NO

Abstract: Concentrated nitric acid solutions subjected to radiation produce radicals of extreme importance in the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. Knowledge of the different rate constants of the reactions involved in this chemistry is needed to improve the efficiency of the process and to define safe operating practices. Pulse radiolysis measurements are performed to find the rate constant of the reaction between NO3˙ radicals and U(iv) in highly concentrated nitrate solution. The optimal stabilization conditions toward thermal oxidation are defined for the considered solutions at room temperature and at 45 °C by adding anti-nitrous agents such as hydrazinium nitrate (HN) and hydroxyl ammonium nitrate (HAN). The decay of the NO3˙ radical is monitored and its reaction rates with HN, HAN and U(iv) are found to be 1.3 × 105, 1.5 × 107 and 1.6 × 106 M-1 s-1 at room temperature. The latter value is more than 10 times lower than the one currently used in numerical codes for simulation of the long-term radiolytic degradation associated with the reprocessing and storage of spent nuclear waste. At 45 °C, conditions similar to the reprocessing of spent fuel, the values of the rate constants of NO3˙ radical toward HN, HAN and U(iv) increase and are found to be 2.6 × 105, 2.9 × 107 and 9.3 × 106 M-1 s-1.

Abstract: Complexation of Pa(V) with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) in aqueous solution (1 M (Na,H)ClO4) was studied by solvent extraction at different acidities (pcH = 0.6; 1.0; 2.0 and 2.5) with the element at the tracer scale (CPa < 10−10 M). Two types of metal–ligand complexes were identified in solution: (1 : 1) and (1 : 2) complexes. The mean charge of the two successive complexes formed in aqueous phase was deduced from the variations of Pa distribution coefficient as a function of acidity. The apparent formation constants of PaO(NTA) and PaO(NTA)23− were also determined from the solvent extraction experiments. Capillary electrophoresis coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-ICP-MS) experiments confirmed the charge −3 of the complex of maximum stoichiometry.

Abstract: The experimental area 2 (EAR-2) at CERNs neutron time-of-flight facility (n TOF), which is operational since 2014, is designed and built as a short-distance complement to the experimental area 1 (EAR-1). The Parallel Plate Avalanche Counter (PPAC) monitor experiment was performed to characterize the beam profile and the shape of the neutron flux at EAR-2. The prompt γ-flash which is used for calibrating the time-of-flight at EAR-1 is not seen by PPAC at EAR-2, shedding light on the physical origin of this γ-flash., The USC group contribution has been partly supported by Spanish grant FPA2013-46236-P.

7. Validation of Cross Sections with Criticality Experiment and Reaction Rates: the Neptunium Case

Abstract: The 237Np neutron-induced fission cross section has been recently measured in a large energy range (from eV to GeV) at the n_TOF facility at CERN. When compared to previous measurements the n_TOF fission cross section appears to be higher by 5–7% beyond the fission threshold. To check the relevance of the n_TOF data, we considered a criticality experiment performed at Los Alamos with a 6 kg sphere of 237Np, surrounded by uranium highly enriched in 235U so as to approach criticality with fast neutrons. The multiplication factor keff of the calculation is in better agreement with the experiment when we replace the ENDF/B-VII.0 evaluation of the 237Np fission cross section by the n_TOF data. We also explored the hypothesis of deficiencies of the inelastic cross section in 235U which has been invoked by some authors to explain the deviation of 750 pcm. The large modification needed to reduce the deviation seems to be incompatible with existing inelastic cross section measurements. Also we show that the ν ¯ of 237Np can hardly be incriminated because of the high accuracy of the existing data. Fission rate ratios or averaged fission cross sections measured in several fast neutron fields seem to give contradictory results on the validation of the 237Np cross section but at least one of the benchmark experiments, where the active deposits have been well calibrated for the number of atoms, favors the n_TOF data set. These outcomes support the hypothesis of a higher fission cross section of 237Np.

Abstract: A fission reaction chamber based on Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPACs) was built for measuring angular distributions of fragments emitted in neutron-induced fission of actinides at the neutron beam available at the Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility at CERN. The detectors and the samples were tilted 45 degrees with respect to the neutron beam direction to cover all the possible values of the emission angle of the fission fragments. The main features of this setup are discussed and results on the fission fragment angular distribution are provided for the Th-232(n,f) reaction around the fission threshold. The results are compared with the available data in the literature, demonstrating the good capabilities of this setup. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. 9. Criticality experiments for validation of cross sections: The neptunium case

Abstract: The 237 Np neutron-induced fission cross section has been measured recently in a large energy range (from eV to GeV) at the n_TOF facility at CERN. When compared to previous measurement the n_TOF fission cross section appears to be higher by 5–7% beyond the fission threshold. To check the relevance of n_TOF data, we simulate a criticality experiment performed at Los Alamos with a 6 kg sphere of 237 Np. This sphere was surrounded by enriched uranium 235 U so as to approach criticality with fast neutrons. The simulation predicts a multiplication factor k eff in better agreement with the experiment (the deviation of 750 pcm is reduced to 250 pcm) when we replace the ENDF/B-VII.0 evaluation of the 237 Np fission cross section by the n_TOF data. We also explore the hypothesis of deficiencies of the inelastic cross section in 235 U which has been invoked by some authors to explain the deviation of 750 pcm. The large distortion that should be applied to the inelastic cross sections in order to reconcile the critical experiment with its simulation is incompatible with existing measurements. Also we show that the ν ¯ of 237 Np can hardly be incriminated because of the high accuracy of the existing data. Fission rate ratios or averaged fission cross sections measured in several fast neutron fields seem to give contradictory results on the validation of the 237 Np cross section but at least one of the benchmark experiments, where the active deposits have been well calibrated for the number of atoms, favors the n_TOF data set. These outcomes support the hypothesis of a higher fission cross section of 237 Np.

Abstract: The U-238 fission cross section is an international standard beyond 2 MeV where the fission plateau starts. However, due to its importance in fission reactors, this cross-section should be very accurately known also in the threshold region below 2 MeV. The U-238 fission cross section has been measured relative to the U-235 fission cross section at CERN - n_TOF with different detection systems. These datasets have been collected and suitably combined to increase the counting statistics in the threshold region from about 300 keV up to 3 MeV. The results are compared with other experimental data, evaluated libraries, and the IAEA standards.

Abstract: In this document, we present the nal result obtained at the n TOF experiment for the neutron- induced ssion cross section of the 237Np, from the ssion threshold up to 1 GeV. The method applied to get this result is brie y discussed. n TOF data are compared to the last experimental measurements using other TOF facilities or the surrogate method, reported experiments performed with monoenergetic sources and the FISCAL systematic, including a discussion about the existing discrepancies.

Abstract: The CERN Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n-TOF) facility is well suited to measure small neutron-induced fission cross sections, as those of subactinides. The cross section ratios of {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi relative to {sup 235}U and {sup 238}U were measured using PPAC detectors. The fragment coincidence method allows to unambiguously identify the fission events. The present experiment provides the first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV for {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi. A good agreement with previous experimental data below 200 MeV is shown. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross section is close to 1 GeV.

Abstract: Protactinium complexation with sulfate ions was studied with the element at tracer scale (CPa ∼ 10−12 M) by solvent extraction method. The involved aqueous system was Pa(V)/H2O/HClO4/Na2SO4/NaClO4 at 10 and 60 °C. The extraction experiments were conducted using the chelating agent thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) in toluene. For both values of temperature, a systematic study was performed in order to determine the formation constants (β1, β2 and β3) of sulfate complexes of Pa(V) at different ionic strength. For each temperature, the extrapolation of these constants to zero ionic strength was performed using the Specific Interaction Theory, leading to values log β 1 0 , log β 2 0 , log β 3 0 of 2.8 ± 0.5, 6.5 ± 0.5, 7.8 ± 0.5 at 10 °C and 4.3 ± 0.3, 8.4 ± 1.3, 9.6 ± 0.4 at 60 °C. Interaction coefficients involving the sulfate complexes of protactinium(V) were also derived.

Abstract: The $^{235}$U neutron-induced cross section is widely used as reference cross section for measuring other fission cross sections, but in the resonance region it is not considered as an IAEA standard because of the scarce experimental data covering the full region. In this work, we deal with a new analysis of the experimental data obtained with a detection setup based on parallel plate ionization chambers (PPACs) at the CERN n_TOF facility in the range from 1 eV to 10 keV. The relative cross section has been normalised to the IAEA value in the region between 7.8 and 11 eV, which is claimed as well-known. Comparison with the ENDF/B-VII evaluation and the IAEA reference file from 100 eV to 10 keV are provided.

Abstract: The behavior of U(IV) octahedral complexes [cation]2[UCl6], where the [cation]+ is [BuMeIm]+ and [MeBu3N]+, is studied using UV/visible spectroscopy, cyclic staircase voltammetry, and rotating disk electrode voltammetry in hydrophobic room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) [BuMeIm][Tf2N] and [MeBu3N][Tf2N], where BuMeIm+ and MeBu3N+ are 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium and tri-n-butylmethylammonium cations, respectively, and Tf2N- is the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion. The absorption spectra of [cation]2[UCl6] complexes in the RTIL solutions are similar to the diffuse solid-state reflectance spectra of the corresponding solid species, indicating that the octahedral complex UCl6(2-) is the predominant chemical form of U(IV) in Tf2N--based hydrophobic ionic liquids. Hexachloro complexes of U(IV) are stable to hydrolysis in the studied RTILs. Voltammograms of UCl(6)2- at the glassy carbon electrode in both RTILs and at the potential range of -2.5 to +1.0 V versus Ag/Ag(I) reveal the following electrochemical couples: UCl6-/UCl6(2-) (quasi-reversible system), UCl(6)2-/UCl6(3-) (quasi-reversible system), and UCl(6)2-/UCl6(Tf2N)x-3+x (irreversible reduction). The voltammetric half-wave potential, Ep/2, of the U(V)/U(IV) couple in [BuMeIm][Tf2N] is positively shifted by 80 mV compared with that in [MeBu3N][Tf2N]. The positive shift in the Ep/2 value for the quasi-reversible U(IV)/U(III) couple is much greater (250 mV) in [BuMeIm][Tf2N]. Presumably, the potential shift is due to the specific interaction of BuMeIm+ with the uranium-hexachloro complex in ionic liquid. Scanning the negative potential to -3.5 V in [MeBu3N][Tf2N] solutions of UCl6(2-) reveals the presence of an irreversible cathodic process at the peak potential equal to -3.12 V (at 100 mV/s and 60 degrees C), which could be attributed to the reduction of U(III) to U(0).

Abstract: Neutron-induced fission cross sections for natPb and 209Bi were measured with a white-spectrum neutron source at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight (n_TOF) facility. The experiment, using neutrons from threshold up to 1 GeV, provides the first results for these nuclei above 200 MeV. The cross sections were measured relative to 235U and 238U in a dedicated fission chamber with parallel plate avalanche counter detectors. Results are compared with previous experimental data. Upgraded parametrizations of the cross sections are presented, from threshold energy up to 1 GeV. The proposed new sets of fitting parameters improve former results along the whole energy range.

Abstract: Hydrolysis constants of protactinium(V) at tracer scale were deduced from the variations of partition coefficient of Pa(V) in the system: TTA/toluene/Pa(V)/H2O/H+/Na+/ClO− 4, as a function of TTA and proton concentrations, ionic strength (0.1 ≤ μ ≤ 3 M), and temperature (10 ≤ θ ≤ 60°C). Extrapolations of theses constants to zero ionic strength were performed using the SIT model. Standard thermodynamic data (under atmospheric pressure) related to the two hydrolysis equilibria involved, were derived from the temperature dependence of the hydrolysis constants at infinite dilution.

Abstract: The hydrolysis of protactinium (V) was studied at tracer scale (ca. 10−12M) with the solvent extraction method involving the aqueous system: Pa(V)/H2O/H+/Na+/ClO−4 at 40 and 60°C for three values of ionic strength. Extraction experiments were conducted using the chelating agent thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) in toluene. Hydrolysis constants are reported for each ionic strength investigated. An SIT modeling is presented and extrapolated constants to zero ionic strength are derived, as well as interaction coefficients involving Pa(V) and perchlorate ions.

Abstract: A high-resolution measurement of the neutron-induced fission cross section of 234U and 237Np has been performed at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight facility. The cross sections have been determined in a wide energy range from 1 eV to 1 GeV using the evaluated 235U cross section as reference. In these measurements the energy determination for the 234U resonances could be improved, whereas previous discrepancies for the 237Np resonances were confirmed. New cross-section data are provided for high neutron energies that go beyond the limits of prior evaluations, obtaining important differences in the case of 237Np.

Abstract: SummaryFully relativistic molecular density–functional calculations of the electronic structures of hydrated, hydrolyzed and fluoride/chloride complexes have been performed for group–4 elements Zr, Hf, and element 104, Rf. Using the electronic density distribution data, relative values of the free energy change for hydrolysis and complex formation reactions were defined. The results show the following trend for the first hydrolysis step of the cationic species: Zr > Hf > Rf in agreement with experiments. For the complex formation in HF solutions, the trend to a decrease from Zr to Hf is continued with Rf, provided no hydrolysis takes place. At pH > 0, further fluorination of hydrolyzed species or fluoro–complexes has an inversed trend in the group Rf ≥ Zr > Hf, with the difference between the elements being very small. For the complex formation in HCl solutions, the trend is continued with Rf, so that Zr > Hf > Rf independently of pH. A decisive energetic factor in hydrolysis or complex formation processes proved to be a predominant electrostatic metal–ligand interaction. Trends in theKd(distribution coefficient) values for the group–4 elements are expected to follow those of the complex formation.

Abstract: We summarize here the results of the TARC experiment whose main purpose is to demonstrate the possibility of using Adiabatic Resonance Crossing (ARC) to destroy efficiently Long-Lived Fission Fragments (LLFFs) in accelerator-driven systems and to validate a new simulation developed in the framework of the Energy Amplifier programme. An experimental set-up was installed in a CERN PS proton beam line to study how neutrons produced by spallation at relatively high energy ( E n ⩾1 MeV ) slow down quasi-adiabatically with almost flat isolethargic energy distribution and reach the capture resonance energy of an element to be transmuted where they will have a high probability of being captured. Precision measurements of energy and space distributions of spallation neutrons (using 2.5 and 3.5 GeV/c protons) slowing down in a 3.3 m×3.3 m×3 m lead volume and of neutron capture rates on LLFFs 99Tc, 129I, and several other elements were performed. An appropriate formalism and appropriate computational tools necessary for the analysis and understanding of the data were developed and validated in detail. Our direct experimental observation of ARC demonstrates the possibility to destroy, in a parasitic mode, outside the Energy Amplifier core, large amounts of 99Tc or 129I at a rate exceeding the production rate, thereby making it practical to reduce correspondingly the existing stockpile of LLFFs. In addition, TARC opens up new possibilities for radioactive isotope production as an alternative to nuclear reactors, in particular for medical applications, as well as new possibilities for neutron research and industrial applications.

Abstract: The possible use of thiocyanate and ammonium thiocyanate-hydrofluoric acid mixtures for quantitative anion exchange separation of zirconium from hafnium and niobium from tantalum and protactinium has been investigated. Distribution coefficients of zirconium(IV), hafnium(IV), niobium(V), tantalum(V) and protactinium(V) on macroporous BIO-RAD AGMP1 resin over a wide range of SCN and SCN/HF concentrations have been determined. The simultaneous presence of these two complexing agents causes a strong decrease of the adsorption phenomena.

Abstract: We present the analysis of the resolved resonance region for the 234U(n,f) cross section data measured at the CERN n TOF facility. The resonance parameters in the energy range from 1 eV to 1500 eV have been obtained with the SAMMY code by using as initial parameters for the fit the resonance parameters of the JENDL-3.3 evaluation. In addition, the statistical analysis has been accomplished, partly with the SAMDIST code, in order to study the level spacing and the Mehta-Dyson correlation.

Abstract: The branching ratio of $^{225}$Ac decay by emission of $^{14}$C was remeasured under improved experimental conditions by using a radioactive source produced at the ISOLDE mass-separator at CERN and a nuclear track detector technique. The result, B=$\lambda_{^{14}\textrm{C}} / \lambda_{\alpha} = (4.5 \pm 1.4) 10^{-12}$, is consistent with the anomalously high value obtained in the 1993 experiment thus confirming the importance of nuclear structure effects in this exotic decay.

Abstract: The Transmutation by Adiabatic Resonance Crossing (TARC) experiment was carried out as PS211 at the CERN PS from 1996 to 1999. Energy and space distributions of spallation neutrons (produced by 2.5 and 3.57 GeV/c CERN proton beams) slowing down in a 3.3×3.3×3 m3 lead volume and neutron capture rates on long-lived fission fragments 99Tc and 129I demonstrate that Adiabatic Resonance Crossing (ARC) can be used to eliminate efficiently such nuclear waste and validate innovative simulation.

Abstract: We have measured the cross section of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction for E_cm = 185.8 keV, 134.7 keV and 111.7 keV using a radioactive 7Be target (132 mCi). Single and coincidence spectra of beta^+ and alpha particles from 8B and 8Be^* decay, respectively, were measured using a large acceptance spectrometer. The zero energy S factor inferred from these data is 18.5 +/- 2.4 eV b and a weighted mean value of 18.8 +/- 1.7 eV b (theoretical uncertainty included) is deduced when combining this value with our previous results at higher energies. Abstract: By using glass track detectors in 4π geometry we measured the branching ratio of 230 U for emission of Ne clusters to be B=(4.8±2.0)×10 −14 and an upper limit for 18 O emission from 226 Th to be B −14 . On the basis of theoretical calculations, the most probable neon cluster comes out to be 22 Ne.

Abstract: Sorption properties of Zr, Hf, Nb, Ta and Pa at trace level towards a macroporous anion exchanger in HF–HCl media were investigated with two ion exchange methods: static (batch technique) and dynamic (column chromatography using the elution mode). Variations of the distribution coefficients as a function of HCl and HF concentration in the range 0.02–0.8 M for both acids are presented in the form of contour plots. Some of the most promising separation possibilities are pointed out.

Abstract: Above 1 MeV of incident neutron energy the fission fragment angular distribution (FFAD) has generally a strong anisotropic behavior due to the combination of the incident orbital momentum and the intrinsic spin of the fissioning nucleus. This effect has to be taken into account for the efficiency estimation of devices used for fission cross section measurements. In addition it bears information on the spin deposition mechanism and on the structure of transitional states. We designed and constructed a detection device, based on Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters (PPAC), for measuring the fission fragment angular distributions of several isotopes, in particular 232Th. The measurement has been performed at n-TOF at CERN taking advantage of the very broad energy spectrum of the neutron beam. Fission events were recognized by back to back detection in coincidence in two position-sensitive detectors surrounding the targets. The detection efficiency, depending mostly on the stopping of fission fragments in backings and electrodes, has been computed with a Geant4 simulation and validated by the comparison to the measured case of 235U below 3 keV where the emission is isotropic. In the case of 232Th, the result is in good agreement with previous data below 10 MeV, with a good reproduction of the structures associated to vibrational states and the opening of second chance fission. In the 14 MeV region our data are much more accurate than previous ones which are broadly scattered. © Owned by the authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2013.

Abstract: In order to study the chemical properties of element 106 in aqueous media, fast, efficient and reproducible chromatographic separations were tested on its assumed homologues: Mo, W and U. Corroborative static and dynamic off-line experiments have shown that after fixation of these three elements on an anion-exchange resin in HF medium, selective elution could be achieved by using suitable concentrations of HCl-HF and HCl solutions. Separations of short-lived W isotopes, produced through heavy ion irradiation were also performed on-line.

Abstract: This paper describes the analogue signal processing chain for the detectors in the Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) to be flown on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) satellite. The satellite, its mission, and the on-board experiments are briefly reviewed, and the configuration of the LWS Detector Subsystem is described. Two possible signal readout and amplification schemes, based on the Transimpedance Amplifier (TIA) and the Integrating Amplifier (IA) are discussed. The reasons for the choice of the IA for the LWS are outlined. The design of the complete LWS detector signal chain is presented.

Abstract: The evolution of the spectral response of Si:Ga photoconductors with uniaxial stress is studied. The cut-off wavenumber is lowered by 14% at a stress of 0.6 GPa, in a spectral range where strong absorption by the lattice occurs. Unstressed Si:Ga detectors have been developed for the AROME instrument focal plane. This experiment was devoted to measure the diffuse near infrared emission of our Galaxy in order to estimate the power radiated in particular spectral bands characteristic to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons. The recent transmediterranean balloon flight gave extensive data which are now being processed.

Abstract: International audience; 237Np is one of the actinides which is most abundantly produced in present reactors, and it could be a good candidate for incineration due to its long life time. However this requires a good knowledge of neutron cross sections. The n_TOF collaboration has carried out a fission cross section measurement at the n_TOF neutron facility at CERN, spanning a very broad energy range, from a fraction of eV to GeV. When compared to previous measurements the n_TOF fission cross section appears to be higher by 5-7% beyond the first fission threshold. We show however that several previous measurements, although consistent with each other, are dependent through re-normalization procedures. To check the relevance of n_TOF data, we simulate an experiment, performed at Los Alamos, with a sphere of 237Np of 6 kg surrounded by enriched uranium 235U, so as to reach criticity with fast neutrons. When introducing the n_TOF data for the fission cross section of 237Np, the simulation predicts a multiplicating factor keff in better agreement with the experiment as the deviation of 750 pcm is reduced to 250 pcm. We explore also the hypothesis of possible deficiencies of the inelastic cross section in 235U which has been invoked by some authors to explain the deviation of 750 pcm. However, the large distortion that should be applied to reconcile the critical experiment with its simulation discredits this option. These outcomes support the hypothesis of a higher fission cross section of 237Np.

Abstract: Neutron-induced fission cross sections for {sup nat}Pb and {sup 209}Bi were measured with a white-spectrum neutron source at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight (n{sub T}OF) facility. The experiment, using neutrons from threshold up to 1 GeV, provides the first results for these nuclei above 200 MeV. The cross sections were measured relative to {sup 235}U and {sup 238}U in a dedicated fission chamber with parallel plate avalanche counter detectors. Results are compared with previous experimental data. Upgraded parametrizations of the cross sections are presented, from threshold energy up to 1 GeV. The proposed new sets of fitting parameters improve former results along the whole energy range.

Abstract: A high-resolution measurement of the neutron-induced fission cross section of U234 and Np237 has been performed at the CERN Neutron Time-of-Flight facility. The cross sections have been determined in a wide energy range from 1 eV to 1 GeV using the evaluated U235 cross section as reference. In these measurements the energy determination for the U234 resonances could be improved, whereas previous discrepancies for the Np237 resonances were confirmed. New cross-section data are provided for high neutron energies that go beyond the limits of prior evaluations, obtaining important differences in the case of Np237. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Abstract: International audience; The hexacyanometallate family is well known in transition metal chemistry because the remarkable electronic delocalization along the metal-cyano-metal bond can be tuned in order to design systems that undergo a reversible and controlled change of their physical properties. We have been working for few years on the description of the molecular and electronic structure of materials formed with [Fe(CN)$_6$]$^{n-}$ building blocks and actinide ions (An = Th, U, Np, Pu, Am) and have compared these new materials to those obtained with lanthanide cations at oxidation state +III. In order to evaluate the influence of the actinide coordination polyhedron on the three-dimensional molecular structure, both atomic number and formal oxidation state have been varied : oxidation states +III, +IV. EXAFS at both iron K edge and actinide L$_{III}$ edge is the dedicated structural probe to obtain structural information on these systems. Data at both edges have been combined to obtain a three-dimensional model. In addition, qualitative electronic information has been gathered with two spectroscopic tools : UV-Near IR spectrophotometry and low energy XANES data that can probe each atom of the structural unit : Fe, C, N and An. Coupling these spectroscopic tools to theoretical calculations will lead in the future to a better description of bonding in these molecular solids. Abstract: The yields of the radiolytic oxidation of U(IV) and of the U(VI) formation, measured by spectrophotometry, are found to be the same (G(-U(IV))(N2O) = G(U(VI))(N2O) = 8.4 x 10(-7) mol J(-1)) and almost double the H(2) formation yield (G(H(2)) = 4.4 x 10(-7) mol J(-1)) in the (60)Co gamma radiolysis of N(2)O-aqueous solutions in the presence of 2 mol L(-1) Cl(-) at pH = 0 (HCl). According to the mechanism of U(IV) radiolytic oxidation, we show that under the conditions of our experiments the U(V) ions do not disproportionate, but undergo a stoichiometric oxidation into U(VI) by H(+) with forming H(2).

Abstract: Protactinium occupies a key position in the actinide series between thorium and uranium. In aqueous acidic solution, it is stable at oxidation state (V), occurring either as an oxocation or as a naked ion, depending on the media. Very few structural information on the hydration sphere of Pa(V) in acidic medium is available, in particular in hydrofluoric acid. Combined EXAFS and theoretical calculations have been used in this work to characterize the protactinium coordination sphere at various HF concentrations. The correlation of the XAFS data with quantum chemical calculations provides complementary structural and electronic models from ab initio techniques. At HF concentrations from 0.5 to 0.05 M, both theoretical calculations and EXAFS data suggest that the protactinium coordination sphere is mainly composed of fluoride ions. At the lowest HF concentration, the occurrence of a monooxo bond is observed with EXAFS, in agreement with the literature. A comparison of these data with related neptunium(V) and plutonium(V) diooxocations in perchloric acid is also presented.

Abstract: Solvent extraction in the conditions of tracer scale chemistry was used to study protactinium(V) complexation with sulphate, chloride, oxalate and diethylene-triamine-pentaacetate. Extraction experiments were conducted using the chelating agent thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) in toluene at constant ionic strength and temperature. Information on the species involved in partition equilibria relative to protactinium(V) complexation were deduced from a systematic study of the variations of distribution coefficient of Pa(V) as function of ligands, protons and TTA concentration.

Abstract: Laboratory scale 20 kHz sonochemical reactors with different geometries have been tested using thermal probes, the kinetics of H 2 O 2 formation, and the kinetics of diphenylmethane (DPhM) sonochemical darkening. Results revealed that the overall sonochemical reaction rates in H 2 O and DPhM are driven by the total absorbed acoustic energy and roughly independent the geometry of the studied reactors. However, the sonochemical efficiency, defined as η = VG / S , where G is a sonochemical yield of H 2 O 2 , V is a volume of sonicated liquid, and S is a surface of the sonotrode, was proved to increase with the decrease of S . This phenomenon was explained by growing of the maximum cavitating bubble size with ultrasonic intensity and its independence towards the specific absorbed acoustic power. For the cleaning bath reactor the kinetics of the sonochemical reactions in H 2 O and DPhM depends strongly on the reaction vessel materials: the reaction rates decreased with the increase of the materials elasticity. Kinetic study of H 2 SO 4 sonolysis using a sonoreactor without direct contact with titanium sonotrode showed that sulphate anion is an effective scavenger of OH radicals formed during water sonolysis.

46. Neutron-induced fission cross sections measurements at n_TOF

Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross sections of 233 U, 234 U, 235 U, 238 U, 232 Th, 237 Np, 209 Bi, nat Pb have been measured at the n TOF facility at CERN over 9 orders of magnitude in neutron energy using 235 Ua s a reference. Parallel Plate Avalanche Counters were used to detect both fission fragments in coincidence, thus efficiently discriminating fissions from other reactions. Data benefit from the remarkable energy resolution of the n TOF facility. They are found in overall good agreement with databases and previous measurements, but some clear discrepancies can be put in evidence. These data are the first full coverage of the high-energy region (up to 1GeV). 1 Motivations Although the neutron-induced fission from some actinides like 235 U and 238 U has been extensively measured in the thermal and epithermal region up to a few MeV due to their key role in nuclear power, many nuclei that are important for the fuel cy- cle or for future reactors such as thorium-based reactors are not so well known. Furthermore, at higher energies, measurements are less numerous and beyond a few MeV they become scarce at best. The design of fast reactors requires precise knowledge of the nuclei behavior in the MeV region, and the design of Accelerator Driven System (ADS) extends such requirements to a few tens of MeV due to the very hard neutron spectra created by the ADS spallation source. In order to design such spallation sources, precise information about their constitutive material (lead and bismuth) are also required. In a more fundamental point of view, it is well know that in the few tens of MeV energy region, fission reactions are not necessarily isotropic; but measurements of these phenom- enons are very scarce and concern only a very few nuclei. Also, the transition from the compound nucleus regime toward the spallation regime has never been properly measured with neutrons, and the modeling of nuclear reactions could greatly benefit from the comparison of such neutron-induced reactions with the more well-known proton-induced reactions.

Abstract: PACS RADIOCH; The neutron-induced fission cross sections of 233U, 234U, 232Th, 237Np, 209Bi, natPb have been measured on the nTOF facility at CERN, which allows an accurate energy measurement owing to the long path. Parallel plate avalanche counters were used to detect the 2 fission fragments in coincidence. This method allows an efficient discrimination of fission reactions among other types of reactions especially at high energies, and it is well suited for the very large energy range available at nTOF. The case of 234U will be used as an example of the quality of the data obtained in these measurements.
