Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has posed an enormous challenge to the mental health of the population with probable differentiated profiles for men and women, although not all studies are consistent. While women are likely to have endured greater loads of stress associated with an increased incidence of mental disorders such as depression, men have been able to abuse alcohol and other drugs more, in addition to complying with prevention recommendations to a lesser extent. As soon as the COVID pandemic began, we began a clinical trial to enhance first-line treatments with three complementary interventions with patients with Major Depression (MD), which has allowed us to analyze differences in response according to gender. Objectives As a secondary analysis of a clinical trial, the aim of the current study was to address the relative different efficacy between genders of three psychotherapeutic approaches in the context of MD. Methods This study was a secondary analysis of a pragmatic parallel randomized controlled clinical trial that was composed of three arms (Minimal Lifestyle Intervention, Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and Lifestyle Modification Program). We recruited 94 individuals (24 men and 70 women) from the Primary Healthcare Centers of the Balearic Islands region in Spain who were currently experiencing an episode of MD. Descriptive and univariate analyses were used to examine between-group differences in sociodemographic and clinical data between the two genders. General Linear Modelling (specifically, repeated measures ANOVA) was performed to compare the effect of gender on the evolution of depressive symptoms (measured by BDI-II). Results Significant between-group differences were observed for the evolution of depressive symptoms after controlling for the intervention group and age. These results suggested that being a woman was significantly related to a worse evolution of depressive symptoms. This association implies a large effect size. Conclusions The COVID 19 pandemic has not only been able to predispose women to Depression to a greater extent, but it is also possible that it has negatively conditioned their response to antidepressant therapies compared to men. However, our data suggest the possibility that greater psychological support could help prevent this situation. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

The electrical performance of Z2-FET and memory operations of matrix are demonstrated at high temperatures up to 125 °C. The sharp subthreshold slope is maintained and the reliable operation is ensured within the memory window of 229 mV even though the turn on voltage of ‘0’- and ‘1’-states are shifted to lower voltage. The ‘0’-state current remains low while the ‘1’-state current gradually increases as the temperature increases leading to higher current margin. At the elevated temperature, the potential barriers are slightly reduced but does not collapse, which leads to the successful memory operation. However, increasing the temperature over 125 °C, the potential barrier at the ‘0’-state is significantly reduced and causes the failure of memory operation with high ‘0’-state current. The matrix demonstrates reliable memory operations without using selector circuits even at 125 °C.

Background: Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) occurs in 1–5% of cases of tuberculosis. Without early treatment, mortality and permanent disability rates are high. Methods: A retrospective study performed at a tertiary hospital in Madrid (Spain) to describe clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of TBM and analyze epidemiological trends over forty years, divided into two intervals (1979−1998 and 1999−2018). Results: Overall, TBM was diagnosed in 65 patients (1.8% of new tuberculosis diagnoses), 48 in the first period and 17 in the second one. Median age at diagnosis increased from 38.5 to 77 years (p = 0.003). The proportion of non-HIV immunosuppressed patients increased (from 2.1% to 29.4%, p < 0.001), while the percentage of patients with a history of drug-abuse decreased (from 33.3% to 5.9%, p = 0.027). The median time between the onset of neurological symptoms and lumbar puncture increased from seven to 15 days (p = 0.040). The time between the onset of symptoms and the initiation of tuberculostatic treatment also increased from eleven to 18 days (p = 0.555). Results from image, biochemical, and microbiological tests showed no differences between both periods. A decreasing trend was observed in survival rates at 1-week (from 97.9% to 64.7%, p < 0.001), 1-month (from 91.7% to 58.8%, p = 0.002) and 1-year (from 85.4% to 47.1%, p = 0.002) after TBM diagnosis. Conclusions: The profile of patients diagnosed with TBM has changed from a young HIV-infected patient with a history of drug addiction to an elderly patient with non-HIV immunosuppression. Diagnosis and start of treatment both experienced a noticeable delay in the second period, which could help explain the increase in mortality observed across the two periods.

Resumen: Introducción: La distrofia muscular de Duchenne (DMD) es una enfermedad neuromuscular grave que afecta a uno de cada 3.500 varones nacidos y sigue un patrón de herencia ligada al cromosoma X. En esta enfermedad se observa una ausencia total de la distrofina, generalmente debida a mutaciones en el gen DMD, que altera la pauta de lectura y en torno al 80% de los casos son debidos a deleciones y duplicaciones de uno o más exones. Métodos: Se han revisado 284 casos de varones diagnosticados genéticamente de DMD entre los años 2007 y 2014. Estos pacientes provienen de 8 hospitales españoles de referencia que cubren la mayor parte del territorio español. Para la identificación de las mutaciones se realizaron las técnicas de reacción en cadena de la polimerasa multiplex, MLPA y secuenciación. Resultados: Los pacientes con DMD presentan en su mayoría grandes deleciones (46,1%) o grandes duplicaciones (19,7%) en el gen de la distrofina. El restante 34,2% corresponde al conjunto de mutaciones puntuales, destacando las sustituciones nucleotídicas tipo nonsense que aparecen en la mitad de los casos. Este estudio permitió identificar 23 nuevas mutaciones en DMD: 7 grandes deleciones y 16 mutaciones puntuales. Conclusiones: El algoritmo de diagnóstico genético aplicado por los centros participantes es el más adecuado para genotipificar a los pacientes con DMD. La especificidad genética de las distintas terapias en desarrollo pone de manifiesto la importancia de conocer la mutación de cada paciente, siendo un 38,7% de ellos susceptibles de participar en los ensayos clínicos actuales. An important challenge to be addressed in the search for an optically based, non-invasive blood glucose quantification method, is related to the spectral interference between glucose and insulin in the mid-infrared region. This work proposes the use of a factorial experimental design in order to understand the optical overlapping of these compounds. The results show how in the 1100–950 cm−1 range, glucose has a greater contribution than insulin to the absorption spectrum, without a significant effect from their interaction. These results and the use of the proposed technique could bring in interesting insights for biomedical applications. The rapid consumption of fossil fuels has led to calls to switch from non-renewable to renewable energy sources. Microbial fuel cells are a promising technology that simultaneously treats wastewater and produces power. This study used the Taguchi Experimental method to optimize anode thickness and pH to obtain the maximum power density of an air-cathode microbial fuel cell (ACMFC). The graphene-sponge (G-S) anode thickness and chamber pH were selected as operating parameters, with their corresponding levels. The L9 orthogonal array was chosen for the experimental design. According to the Taguchi Method, the optimum G-S anode thickness and chamber pH were determined to be 1.0 cm and 8.0, respectively. A confirmatory run was performed under these optimum conditions, and the maximum power density observed was 707.75 mW·m−3. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to identify the percentage contributions of the operating parameters to the process, which were found to be 30.66% for pH and 69.34% for anode thickness.

The initial crack path is analysed in a fretting fatigue test with cylindrical contact, where there is a stress gradient and a multiaxial and non-proportional stress state. For this, a cylindrical pad is pressed, with a constant normal load, N, against a dog-bone type fatigue test specimen. Then, the test specimen is subjected to a cyclic axial stress, σ. Due to the cyclical axial stress, the assembly used and the friction between the contact pair, a tangential cyclic load Q is generated. In these tests, both components are made of Al7075-T651 alloy. The crack initiation path along the fracture surface is optically measured using a focus variation technique. The contact stress/strain fields obtained analytically, in junction with the Fatemi-Socie (FS) and Smith-Watson- Topper (SWT) multiaxial fatigue parameters, allow us to determine the controlling parameters of the crack initiation process observed in the tests and to estimate the crack path during the early stage of the crack growth.

This paper presents two multiaxial fatigue life prediction models applied to a commercial dental implant. One model is called Variable Initiation Length Model and takes into account both the crack initiation and propagation phases. The second model combines the Theory of Critical Distance with a critical plane damage model to characterise the initiation and initial propagation of micro/meso cracks in the material. This paper discusses which material properties are necessary for the implementation of these models and how to obtain them in the laboratory from simple test specimens. It also describes the FE models developed for the stress/strain and stress intensity factor characterisation in the implant. The results of applying both life prediction models are compared with experimental results arising from the application of ISO-14801 standard to a commercial dental implant.

This paper analyses the influence that the type of geometry used to obtain the stress/strain fields in a cylindrical contact has on fretting fatigue life predictions. In addition, this work considers the effect that the fatigue crack shape assumed has on these fretting fatigue life predictions. The strain/stress fields are calculated using a series of finite elements models that consider the following three types of behaviour: plane stress, plane strain (2D geometries) and 3D. Each of these models gives a different crack initiation life and a different evolution of the stress intensity factor (SIF), which are calculated using the weight function method. These models therefore provide different fretting fatigue life predictions. Finally, the lives obtained using the numerical models are compared with experimental lives.

Introduction: The Hub-and-Spoke stroke system seeks to enhance the efficiency of stroke care by establishing a cohesive network between healthcare facilities providing quality stroke care to patients. This study endeavors to evaluate the effectiveness and characterize the outcomes of acute ischemic stroke patients treated within the Hub-and-Spoke hospital system over 2 years. The assessment focused on thrombolysis rates, mortality, and disability at 3-month follow-up. Methods: We conducted a retrospective single-center review to assess the service delivery and outcomes of acute ischemic stroke patients within the Hub-and-Spoke framework which was implemented in Q3 2021. The Hub-and-Spoke model aimed to provide appropriate neurological care for stroke patients, growing from four to eight spoke hospitals in 2 years. Results: The study consisted of 132 stroke patients transferred to the hub hospital, and 42 (31.8%) of them had acute ischemic stroke. Among these 42 ischemic stroke patients, 76% of them were candidates for thrombolysis with a mean NIHSS of 12 (6–22). Among the subset of 32 patients eligible for intervention within the specified time window, a total of 23 individuals, constituting 72% received r-TPA. Regarding patients administered r-TPA, 91.2% demonstrated favorable functional outcomes with an mRS score of 0–1, while 8.7% exhibited a score of 2–3. Among those not given r-TPA, the mean NIHSS was 17 (ranging from 2 to 32). Their functional outcomes after 3 months revealed 52.5% with an mRS score of 0–1, 16% with a score of 2–3, 21.2% with a score of 4–5, and 10.5% with an mRS score of 6. Conclusion: Hub-and-Spoke networks represent a crucial advancement in stroke treatment, particularly for facilities lacking the capacity to manage strokes effectively. By leveraging added expertise and reducing the time from onset to diagnosis to treatment, these networks have significantly enhanced patient care. This enhancement is particularly evident in the increased rate of thrombolysis, resulting in reduced morbidity and prevention of mortality.

Objetivo: Se pretende estudiar la prevalencia de TMG (trastorno mental grave) en los internos recluidos en las tres prisiones de Cádiz (España) que solicitaron asistencia psiquiátrica. Material y método: Estudio transversal que analiza la demanda asistencial psiquiátrica en los centros penitenciarios de Puerto I, II y III del Puerto de Santa María (Cádiz) durante un año. Resultados: Se estudian 128 pacientes. Los diagnósticos psiquiátricos más prevalentes fueron los trastornos de personalidad (F60-69) (35.2%), el grupo de esquizofrenia, trastorno esquizotípico y trastorno de ideas delirantes (F20-29) (25.8%) y los trastornos mentales y del comportamiento debidos al consumo de sustancias psicótropas (F10-19) (16.4%). El 46.1% corresponden a trastornos mentales graves (TMG). Discusión: Se confirma que hay una alta prevalencia de TMG en los presos de Cádiz, por lo que se precisa una elevada asignación de recursos para atender este grupo de enfermedades.Introduction: In recent years it has been observed that there is a high level of severe mental disorder within the Spanish prison system. Methods and Materials: A one year descriptive and transversal study of the psychiatric health care demand in the prisons Puerto I, II and III of Puerto de Santa Maria (Cadiz). Results: Of the 128 patients studied, the psychiatric diagnostics with highest prevalence were personality disorders (F60-69) at 35.16%, the next group was psychosis (F20-29) at 25.78%, and in third place mental and behaviour disorders due to use of psychotropic substances (F10-19) at 16.41%. 46.09% suffered conditions which are categorised as severe mental disorders. Discussion: This study confirms the high levels of severe mental disorder in prisons located in the area of the Puerto Real Hospital. We are making efforts to improve on psychiatric health care provided to these patients by working closely with the Prison system.

El tratamiento de heridas complejas, con pérdida de sustancia importante o exposición de estructuras nobles, constituye una práctica diaria en la mayoría de los Servicios de Cirugía Plástica de referencia. A pesar de que el desbridamiento quirúrgico continúa siendo la terapia de elección para el tratamiento de heridas infectadas o con abundantes restos necróticos, el advenimiento de la terapia de vacío y las mejoras tecnológicas experimentadas por dicha terapia en la última década, hacen de su utilización una herramienta coadyuvante para el control del lecho quirúrgico, de los exudados de la herida y de la colonización bacteriana. Presentamos 9 casos clínicos de uso de terapia VAC® en el tratamiento de diversas patologías, tales como: dehiscencia esternal, grandes quemados, traumatismos de extremidades, etc. En todos ellos, esta terapia constituyó un pilar fundamental en el tratamiento de los pacientes facilitando el control del exudado de las heridas, la protección de estructuras nobles y mejorando la calidad de vida y el confort de los pacientes durante su estancia hospitalaria.Treatment of complex wounds that imply loss of substance or important anatomic structures exposure has a great relevance in Plastic Surgery Departments nowadays. Even though surgical debridement keeps on being the principal choice treatment in infected or necrotic wounds, VAC® therapy use and its new technology advances in the last decade, has allowed an option to control bacterial colonization, exudates and surgical wounds. We present 9 cases of vacuum therapy use for treatment of different pathologies such as sternum dehiscence, burned patients, extremities trauma, etc. In all these cases vacuum therapy has been essential in the management of exudates, protection of anatomic vital structures as well as to improve patient's quality of life during hospital stay.

Introducción: el carcinoma hepatocelular (CHC) es una neoplasia con una elevada incidencia y una alta mortalidad. Objetivo: nuestro objetivo es la descripción de la historia natural de una cohorte de pacientes con CHC e identificar variables asociadas a supervivencia. Material y métodos: estudio retrospectivo y descriptivo de pacientes diagnosticados de CHC entre 1995-2002. Las variables cualitativas se expresaron mediante frecuencias y porcentajes y las cuantitativas con mediana y desviación típica. La supervivencia se estimó mediante el método de Kaplan Meyer y la prueba de Log Rank. Resultados: se analizaron un total de 154 pacientes con CHC. La ratio hombre-mujer fue de 2,9/1. La edad media de 68 ± 9 años. El 82% de los pacientes fueron exitus en un tiempo medio de seguimiento de 28 meses. La mediana de supervivencia fue de 21,5 meses (IC 95%: 16,98-26,04). Se realizó tratamiento con intención curativa en un 40,3% y el resto tratamiento paliativo. Las variables asociadas a la supervivencia fueron: presencia o no de ascitis, el número de lesiones en el momento del diagnóstico y si el tratamiento realizado fue con intención curativa o no. No hubieron diferencias estadísticamente significativas respecto a: sexo, edad, etiología de la cirrosis y estadio de Child en el momento del diagnóstico. Conclusiones: los factores asociados a una menor supervivencia en los pacientes con carcinoma hepatocelular fueron la presencia de ascitis y el número de lesiones en el momento del diagnóstico. La realización de tratamiento con intención curativa se asocia a una mayor supervivencia.Background: hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a cancer with high incidence and mortality. Objective: our aim was to describe the natural history of a patient cohort with HCC, and to identify the factors associated with survival. Patients and methods: a retrospective and descriptive study of patients diagnosed with HCC between 1995 and 2002. Qualitative variables were expressed as frequencies and percentages. Quantitative variables were expressed as medians and standard deviations. Survival was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and log rank. Results: a total of 154 patients were analyzed. The men-to-women ratio was 2.9/1. Mean age was 68 ± 9 years. 82% of patients died during a median follow-up of 28 months. Median survival was 21.5 months (95% CI: 16.98-26.04). Curative treatment was done in 40.3% of diagnosed patients, and 59.7% of patients received palliative treatment. Factors associated with survival were: ascites, number of lesions at diagnosis, and curative treatment. No statistical differences were found for the next factors: age, sex, etiology of cirrhosis, and Child-Pugh stage at diagnosis. Conclusions: factors associated with low survival in patients with HCC were ascites and number of lesions. Curative treatment is associated with a higher survival when compared to palliative treatment.

El objetivo de este trabajo ha consistido en realizar una revisión de los biomarcadores que actualmente se proponen como el nexo de unión entre la inflamación, la obesidad y complicaciones asociadas, seleccionando los estudios llevados a cabo y las cuestiones pendientes. Cada vez hay mayor evidencia científica de que la inflamación puede jugar un papel importante en la etiología de diversas enfermedades crónicas de gran relevancia para la salud pública. En los últimos años, distintos estudios han sugerido que la obesidad podría ser un desorden inflamatorio. Asimismo, el estrés oxidativo se ha propuesto como un potencial inductor de la inflamación y de la susceptibilidad a la obesidad y patología asociadas. Entre los biomarcadores relacionados con la obesidad, la resistencia insulínica, las enfermedades cardiovasculares y el síndrome metabólico se encuentran: el factor de necrosis tumoral alfa, interleuquinas 6 y 18, angiotensinógeno, factor de crecimiento TGF-beta, inhibidor de la activación del plasminógeno, leptina, resistina, proteína C reactiva, amiloide A, ácido siálico, marcadores de disfunción endotelial (factor von Willebrand, ICAMs, vCAMs) factor 3 del sistema del complemento, haptoglobina, glicoproteína zinc-alfa2, eotaxina, visfatina, apelina, alfa1-antitripsina, vaspina, omentina, proteína transportadora de retinol 4, ceruloplasmina, adiponectina y desnutrina. Algunos de estos biomarcadores son buenos predictores de riesgo cardiovascular (inhibidor de la activación de plasminógeno 1, angiotensinógeno, fibrinógeno, ácido siálico, factor 3 del complemento y proteína C reactiva), adiposidad (leptina, visfatina, resistina, haptoglobina) y/o resistencia insulínica (ácido siálico, proteína C reactiva, inhibidor de la activación de plasminógeno 1, factor von Willebrand). Sin embargo, todavía queda por dilucidar el papel de muchos de ellos en la etiología de la obesidad y comorbilidades asociadas en humanos, así como los factores implicados en su regulación.The objetive of this article is to review biomarkers that have been suggested in recent years as the link between inflammation, obesity and associated co-morbidities, as well as some questions that yet remain unclear. Increasing evidence indicates the important role of inflammation in the etiology of major public health problems. In the last years, several studies have proposed that obesity might be a inflammatory disorder. In addition, oxidative stress has been suggested as a potential inductor of inflammatory status and susceptibility to obesity and related disorders. Several biomarkers are being suggested as the link between obesity, insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, such as tumor necrosis factor alfa, interleukin-6 and -18, angiotensinogen, transforming grow factor beta, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, leptin, resistin, C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, sialic acid, fibrinogen, markers of endothelial dysfunction (von Willebrand factor, ICAMs, VCAMs), complement factor 3, haptoglobin, Zinc-alpha2-glycoprotein, eotaxin, visfatin, apelin, alpha1- antitrypsin, vaspin, omentin, retinol binding protein 4, ceruloplasmin, adiponectin and desnutrin. Some of this biomarkers are good predictors of cardiovascular risk (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, sialic acid, fribrinogen, complement factor 3, C-reactive protein), adiposity (leptin, visfatin, resistin, haptoglobin) and/or insulin resistance (sialic acid, C-reactive protein, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, von Willebrand factor). However, it is currently unclear the role of many of them concerning inflammatory processes in humans, as well as the factors involved in their regulation.

Objetivo: Estimar la prevalencia de realización de actividad física (AF) deportiva intensa en la Región de Murcia según sexo y edad y analizar su asociación con los principales determinantes demográficos, socioeconómicos, así como con otros factores de riesgo cardiovascular. Método: Encuesta sobre una muestra representativa de la población de 18 a 65 años de la Región de Murcia mediante un muestreo aleatorio polietápico con definición de cuotas muestrales. El número de personas entrevistadas fue de 3.091. Se recogió, a través de un cuestionario validado, la frecuencia y duración de realización de AF intensa deportiva durante las 2 semanas previas a la realización de la encuesta. Además, se obtuvo información sobre variables socioeconómicas, hábito tabáquico, presión arterial, peso, talla y una analítica de sangre para determinar los lípidos plasmáticos. La AF intensa o vigorosa (≥ 6 equivalentes a la tasa metabólica basal) se midió en kcal/día y se redujo a h/sem, considerando 3 categorías diferentes: ninguna AF, menos de 2 h/sem, e igual o más de 2 h/sem. Resultados: Globalmente, el 17,8% (intervalo de confianza [IC] del 95%, 16,6-19,0) de la población adulta de la Región de Murcia realiza AF intensa ≥ 2 h/sem. Por sexos las cifras varían siendo el doble en varones (23,1%; IC del 95%, 21,0-25,2) que en las mujeres (12,5%; IC del 95%, 10,9-14,1). En el análisis mediante regresión logística la mayor frecuencia de realización de AF deportiva intensa se asoció con la edad, el nivel de estudios y la situación de empleo. En los varones, además, con la ocupación y la residencia en áreas urbanas. Conclusiones: En el período de estudio, una de cada 5 personas adultas en la Región de Murcia realizó AF deportiva intensa con una frecuencia y duración compatible con la prevención de episodios isquémicos coronarios.Objective: To estimate the prevalence of intense physical activity according to age and sex in the region of Murcia, Spain, and to analyze its association with major demographic and socioeconomic determinants and other cardiovascular risk factors. Methods: Survey of a representative sample of the population aged between 18 and 65 years from Murcia was performed using multistage random sampling with definition of the sample quotas. A total of 3091 individuals were surveyed. The frequency and duration of intense physical sports activity during the two weeks prior to the survey was obtained using a validated questionnaire. Information was also collected on socioeconomic variables, smoking, blood pressure, weight and height and a blood test was performed to determine plasma lipids. Intense or vigorous physical activity (≥ 6 Metabolic Equivalents [MET]) was measured in kcal/day and reduced to hours/week to give three categories: no vigorous physical activity, less than 2 hours/week, and 2 hours/week or more. Results: Overall, 17.8% (95% CI: 16.6-19.0) of the adult population of the region of Murcia performed intense physical activity for ≥ 2 hours/week. The figures were twice as high in men (23.1%; 95% CI: 21.0-25.2) than in women (12.5%; 95% CI: 10.9-14.1). In the logistic regression analysis, a higher frequency of intense physical activity was associated with age, level of education and employment situation. In men it was also associated with occupation and residence in urban areas. Conclusions: During the study period, one in five adults in the region of Murcia took intense physical sports activity with a frequency and duration that were compatible with the prevention of episodes of coronary ischemia.

Objetivos: Los grupos de nivel social más bajo tienen habitualmente una dieta menos saludable. El objetivo de este estudio es comparar la adhesión al patrón de dieta mediterránea entre diferentes grupos demográficos y sociales de la población adulta. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal en regiones del sur y norte de España, en voluntarios sanos (15.634 varones y 25.812 mujeres) de 29 a 69 años de edad, miembros de la cohorte EPIC en España. Se tuvo en cuenta el consumo de nueve grupos de alimentos para definir el patrón de dieta mediterránea: vegetales, frutas, legumbres, cereales, carne roja, pescado, aceite de oliva, leche y productos lácteos y vino. Se aplicaron dos técnicas de análisis: comparación de la media diaria de consumo de cada grupo, y el cálculo de un escore global para todos los alimentos, por nivel educacional y clase social de origen. Resultados: Los grupos de nivel educacional más bajo consumen mas cereales y legumbres, pero menos vegetales, aceite de oliva (las mujeres), leche y productos lácteos (los varones). El consumo de vino está positivamente asociado con la educación en las mujeres y negativamente asociado en los varones. Calculando una puntuación para medir la adhesión global al patrón de dieta mediterránea, las diferencias por cada grupo de alimentos se compensan, y no hay variaciones según el nivel educacional, aunque existen pequeñas diferencias en la clase social de origen (22,52 en la clase más baja y 21,98 en la clase más alta). El índice de adhesión es más bajo en los adultos jóvenes y mujeres, y ligeramente más alto en las poblaciones del sur (23,53 en Murcia) que en las del norte de España (21,64 en Asturias). Conclusiones: Los resultados sugieren que el patrón de dieta mediterránea es bastante uniforme, al menos en las poblaciones adultas de las áreas incluidas en el estudio.Objectives: Lower social classes tend to eat a less healthy diet. The aim of this study was to compare adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern among different demographic and social groups in the adult population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed in southern and northern regions of Spain in healthy volunteers (15,634 men and 25,812 women), aged 29-69 years, who were members of the European Prospective Investigation on Cancer cohort in Spain. Nine groups of food were included in the definition of the Mediterranean diet: vegetables and garden products, fruits, pulses, cereals, red meat, fish, olive oil, milk and milk products, and wine. Two techniques were used in the analysis: comparison of the mean daily intake of each group and calculation of an overall score for all the foods according to educational level ang original social class. Results: Groups with the lowest educational levels consumed more cereals and pulses and lower quantities of vegetables, olive oil (women), milk and milk products (men). Wine consumption was positively associated with education in women and was negatively associated in men. Calculation of a score to measure overall adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern eliminated differences according to each food category. No variations were found according to educational level, but small differences were found in original social class. The adherence score was lowest in young adults and women and was slightly higher in the south than in the north of Spain. Conclusions: The results suggest that the Mediterranean dietary pattern is fairly uniform, at least in the adult population of the regions included in this study.

Presentamos un caso clínico de neuropatía por compresión de la rama cutánea palmar del nervio mediano, producido por una anomalía en la inserción del tendón del músculo palmaris longus, que fue tratado quirúrgicamente, obteniendo una completa desaparición de los síntomas.

A pesar de que el desbridamiento quirúrgico continúa siendo la terapia de elección para el tratamiento de heridas infectadas o con abundantes restos necróticos, el advenimiento de la terapia de vacío y las mejoras tecnológicas experimentadas por dicha terapia en la última década, hacen de su utilización una herramienta coadyuvante para el control del lecho quirúrgico, de los exudados de la herida y de la colonización bacteriana. Presentamos 9 casos clínicos de uso de terapia VAC® en el tratamiento de diversas patologías, tales como: dehiscencia esternal, grandes quemados, traumatismos de extremidades, etc. En todos ellos, esta terapia constituyó un pilar fundamental en el tratamiento de los pacientes facilitando el control del exudado de las heridas, la protección de estructuras nobles y mejorando la calidad de vida y el confort de los pacientes durante su estancia hospitalaria.Treatment of complex wounds that imply loss of substance or important anatomic structures exposure has a great relevance in Plastic Surgery Departments nowadays. Even though surgical debridement keeps on being the principal choice treatment in infected or necrotic wounds, VAC® therapy use and its new technology advances in the last decade, has allowed an option to control bacterial colonization, exudates and surgical wounds. We present 9 cases of vacuum therapy use for treatment of different pathologies such as sternum dehiscence, burned patients, extremities trauma, etc. In all these cases vacuum therapy has been essential in the management of exudates, protection of anatomic vital structures as well as to improve patient's quality of life during hospital stay.

While peripheral neuropathy is the most common complication of long-term diabetes, cognitive deficits associated with encephalopathy and myelopathy also occur. Diabetes is a risk factor for Alzheimer disease (AD) and increases the risk of progression from mild cognitive impairment to AD. The only current recommendation for preventing or slowing the progression of peripheral neuropathy is to maintain close glycemic control, while there is no recommendation for central nervous system disorders. NSI-189 is a new chemical entity that when orally administered promotes neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus, increases hippocampal volume, enhances synaptic plasticity, and reduces cognitive dysfunction. To establish the potential for impact on peripheral neuropathy, we first showed that NSI-189 enhances neurite outgrowth and mitochondrial functions in cultured adult rat primary sensory neurons. Oral delivery of NSI-189 to murine models of type 1 (female) and type 2 (male) diabetes prevented multiple functional and structural indices of small and large fiber peripheral neuropathy, increased hippocampal neurogenesis, synaptic markers and volume, and protected long-term memory. NSI-189 also halted progression of established peripheral and central neuropathy. NSI-189, which is currently in clinical trials for treatment of major depressive disorder, offers the opportunity for the development of a single therapeutic agent against multiple indices of central and peripheral neuropathy.

The Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology is the third oldest University in Nueva Ecija province. As the year progresses, the University keeps producing thousands of graduates during each academic year. An average of 4,737 individuals graduated from different programs during the past five years. The University is obligated by the Commission on Higher Education to collect up-to-date data and information through the CHECK system. Unfortunately, the office of alumni affairs and placement, which is in charge to collect and manage the graduates' information, does not have an automated alumni database system. This paper presents the development of an alumni databank. The online database record management system for alumni considerably benefits the University's Alumni Affairs and Placement Office, particularly in tracing its graduates and managing graduates' profile information. It can manage alumni profiles, notify graduates of job advertisements, and is capable of generating statistical reports with data analytics. Security measures were also employed to protect against any potential system breach and unauthorized use.

Aims. Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to many forms of peripheral and central nervous system degeneration. Therapies that protect mitochondrial number and function have the potential to impact the progression of conditions such as diabetic neuropathy. We therefore assessed indices of mitochondrial function in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and brain cortex of the Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rat model of type 2 diabetes and tested the therapeutic impact of a neurogenic compound, NSI-189, on both mitochondrial function and indices of peripheral and central neurological dysfunction. Materials and Methods. ZDF rats were maintained for 16 weeks of untreated diabetes before the start of oral treatment with NSI-189 for an additional 16 weeks. Nerve conduction velocity, sensitivity to tactile and thermal stimuli, and behavioral assays of cognitive function were assessed monthly. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation, mitochondrial protein levels, and respiratory complex activities were assessed in the DRG and brain cortex after 16 weeks of treatment with NSI-189. Results. Treatment with NSI-189 selectively elevated the expression of protein subunits of complexes III and V and activities of respiratory complexes I and IV in the brain cortex, and this was accompanied by amelioration of impaired memory function and plasticity. In the sensory ganglia of ZDF rats, loss of AMPK activity was ameliorated by NSI-189, and this was accompanied by reversal of multiple indices of peripheral neuropathy. Conclusions. Efficacy of NSI-189 against dysfunction of the CNS and PNS function in type 2 diabetic rats was accompanied by improvement of mitochondrial function. NSI-189 exhibited actions at different levels of mitochondrial regulation in central and peripheral tissues.

CO2 adsorption on bare 3d transition-metal nanoclusters and 3d transition-metal nanoclusters supported on pyridinic N3-doped graphene (PNG) was investigated by employing the density functional theory. First, the interaction of Co13 and Cu13 with PNG was analyzed by spin densities, interaction energies, charge transfers, and HUMO-LUMO gaps. According to the interaction energies, the Co13 nanocluster was adsorbed more efficiently than Cu13 on the PNG. The charge transfer indicated that the Co13 nanocluster donated more charges to the PNG nanoflake than the Cu13 nanocluster. The HUMO-LUMO gap calculations showed that the PNG improved the chemical reactivity of both Co13 and Cu13 nanoclusters. When the CO2 was adsorbed on the bare 3d transition-metal nanoclusters and 3d transition-metal nanoclusters supported on the PNG, it experienced a bond elongation and angle bending in both systems. In addition, the charge transfer from the nanoclusters to the CO2 molecule was observed. This study proved that Co13/PNG and Cu13/PNG composites are adequate candidates for CO2 adsorption and activation.
