Abstract

Traditional estimators of the galaxy power spectrum and bispectrum are sensitive to the survey geometry. They yield spectra that differ from the true underlying signal since they are convolved with the window function of the survey. For the current and future generations of experiments, this bias is statistically significant on large scales. It is thus imperative that the effect of the window function on the summary statistics of the galaxy distribution is accurately modelled. Moreover, this operation must be computationally efficient in order to allow sampling posterior probabilities while performing Bayesian estimation of the cosmological parameters. In order to satisfy these requirements, we built a deep neural network model that emulates the convolution with the window function, and we show that it provides fast and accurate predictions. We trained (tested) the network using a suite of 2000 (200) cosmological models within the cold dark matter scenario, and demonstrate that its performance is agnostic to the precise values of the cosmological parameters. In all cases, the deep neural network provides models for the power spectra and the bispectrum that are accurate to better than 0.1 per cent on a timescale of 10 $\mu$s., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

Background Depression is one of the most frequent disorders in SLE, from 17% to 75% of prevalence, although subtle neuropsychiatric syndromes like symptoms of depressive and anxiety axes are often considered as ‘non-neuropsychiatric SLE’. Recent data suggest SLE patients also suffer from sleep disturbances like frequent awakenings and unrestorative sleep, and worse sleep quality has been found to be a fellow traveller with this disease. Aims to objectively evaluate sleep in SLE patients in comparison with a cohort of age and sex-matched controls and to find possible relationships with disease manifestations and to find the factors that have greater impact on mood disorders in SLE group. Methods sleep was evaluated in 41 SLE patients and 36 controls using actigraphy. The presence of mood disorders, temperament, health-related quality of life and perception of sleep were evaluated with specific questionnaires: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Self Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Brief COPE, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Resilience Scale for adult, Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy (FACIT) Fatigue Scale, Brief TEMPS-M, Lupus QoL and Short Form Health survey 36 (in SLE patients and controls respectively). Results The strongest predictors of the SLE group were higher scores in BDI and SAS index, lower Sleep Efficiency and greater Total Sleep Time. Statistically significant differences were found between depressed SLE patients and non-depressed SLE patients in several parameters. Lower scores in FACIT fatigue scale, burden to others, pain and body image domains and higher PSS score were found in depressed SLE patients. In SLE group, FACIT score was strongly negative correlated with BDI score and positively correlated with physical domain. Fibromyalgic SLE patients had lower scores in pain domain when compared with non-fibromyalgic SLE patients. Instead, no difference in pain domain was found between patients with joint involvement and patients without joint involvement, addressing fibromyalgia as the factor with greater impact over pain. Conclusion SLE is a chronic disease that has great impact on mood and sleep quality and identification of this problems and consequent therapeutic interventions may improve the quality of life of these patients.

Abstract

We present the Galaxy Stellar Mass Function (MF) up to z~1 from the zCOSMOS-bright 10k spectroscopic sample. We investigate the total MF and the contribution of ETGs and LTGs, defined by different criteria (SED, morphology or star formation). We unveil a galaxy bimodality in the global MF, better represented by 2 Schechter functions dominated by ETGs and LTGs, respectively. For the global population we confirm that low-mass galaxies number density increases later and faster than for massive galaxies. Abstract

We present imaging data and photometry for the COSMOS survey in 15 photometric bands between 0.3um and 2.4um. These include data taken on the Subaru 8.3m telescope, the KPNO and CTIO 4m telescopes, and the CFHT 3.6m telescope. Special techniques are used to ensure that the relative photometric calibration is better than 1% across the field of view. The absolute photometric accuracy from standard star measurements is found to be 6%. The absolute calibration is corrected using galaxy spectra, providing colors accurate to 2% or better. Stellar and galaxy colors and counts agree well with the expected values. Finally, as the first step in the scientific analysis of these data we construct panchromatic number counts which confirm that both the geometry of the universe and the galaxy population are evolving., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 14 tables, Accepted to ApJS for COSMOS speciall issue

Abstract

(Abridged) We analyze the environments and galactic properties (morphologies and star-formation histories) of a sample of 153 close kinematic pairs in the redshift range 0.2 < z < 1 identified in the zCOSMOS-bright 10k spectroscopic sample of galaxies. Correcting for projection effects, the fraction of close kinematic pairs is three times higher in the top density quartile than in the lowest one. This translates to a three times higher merger rate because the merger timescales are shown, from mock catalogues based on the Millennium simulation, to be largely independent of environment once the same corrections for projection is applied. We then examine the morphologies and stellar populations of galaxies in the pairs, comparing them to control samples that are carefully matched in environment so as to remove as much as possible the well-known effects of environment on the properties of the parent population of galaxies. Once the environment is properly taken into account in this way, we find that the early-late morphology mix is the same as for the parent population, but that the fraction of irregular galaxies is boosted by 50-75%, with a disproportionate increase in the number of irregular-irregular pairs (factor of 4-8 times), due to the disturbance of disk galaxies. Future dry-mergers, involving elliptical galaxies comprise less than 5% of all close kinematic pairs. In the closest pairs, there is a boost in the specific star-formation rates of star-forming galaxies of a factor of 2-4, and there is also evidence for an increased incidence of post star-burst galaxies. Abstract

Recently, two-dimensional (2D) speckle-tracking echocardiography has enabled assessment of a particular behaviour of left ventricular (LV) motion defined as twisting/untwisting. The aim of our study is to evaluate whether in early stage of hypertension and systemic amyloidosis, subclinical alteration of LV twist and untwist is already present even if no LV hypertrophy is evidenced. Forty-seven patients with light chain immunoglobulin amyloidosis (AL) entered the study and were classified having cardiac amyloidosis (CA) or not (NCA) if the mean value of LV wall thickness was ≥12 mm or not. Twenty-two consecutive patients with history of arterial essential hypertension (Hyp Group) and no sign of LV hypertrophy were enrolled. A total of 26 asymptomatic healthy subjects, age-matched, were analysed as control group. All three groups of patients and healthy subjects underwent traditional and 2D speckle-tracking echocardiography evaluation. LV diameters, volumes, wall thickness, mass, ejection fraction, E/A and E/E' ratio were evaluated. Twisting and untwisting rates were significantly increased in NCA and Hyp group when compared with CA and control group. Moreover, despite similar LV mass and diastolic dysfunction degree, untwisting rate peak was significantly delayed in NCA when compared with Hyp group. In patients with CA, untwisting rate delay was similar to patients with NCA. Our results show that amyloidosis and systemic hypertension produce both LV twist and untwist rate enhancement before LV hypertrophy is developed. In patients with amyloidosis irrespectively of LV infiltration degree, a significant LV untwisting rate peak delay occurs suggesting that different aetiology of cardiac involvement could differently affect LV untwisting rate.

Abstract

We investigate the properties and the environment of radio sources with optical counterpart from the combined VLA-COSMOS and zCOSMOS samples. The advantage of this sample is the availability of optical spectroscopic information, high quality redshifts, and accurate density determination. By comparing the star formation rates estimated from the optical spectral energy distribution with those based on the radio luminosity, we divide the radio sources in three families, passive AGN, non-passive AGN and star forming galaxies. These families occupy specific regions of the 8.0-4.5 $\mu$m infrared color--specific star formation plane, from which we extract the corresponding control samples. Only the passive AGN have a significantly different environment distribution from their control sample. The fraction of radio-loud passive AGN increases from ~2% in underdense regions to ~15% for overdensities (1+delta) greater than 10. This trend is also present as a function of richness of the groups hosting the radio sources. Passive AGN in overdensities tend to have higher radio luminosities than those in lower density environments. Since the black hole mass distribution is similar in both environments, we speculate that, for low radio luminosities, the radio emission is controlled (through fuel disponibility or confinement of radio jet by local gas pressure) by the interstellar medium of the host galaxy, while in other cases it is determined by the structure (group or cluster) in which the galaxy resides., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, A&A in press

Abstract

The identities of the main processes triggering and quenching star-formation in galaxies remain unclear. A key stage in evolution, however, appears to be represented by post-starburst galaxies. To investigate their impact on galaxy evolution, we initiated a multiwavelength study of galaxies with k+a spectral features in the COSMOS field. We examine a mass-selected sample of k+a galaxies at z=0.48-1.2 using the spectroscopic zCOSMOS sample. K+a galaxies occupy the brightest tail of the luminosity distribution. They are as massive as quiescent galaxies and populate the green valley in the colour versus luminosity (or stellar mass) distribution. A small percentage (, 17 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) have been introduced during the recent years to improve survival, decrease hospital readmissions and mortality, and to improve functional status and quality of life for patients with heart failure and left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD). Studies which evaluated the use of CRT or ICD alone or compared CRT with CRT-ICD in patients with heart failure and LVSD are listed in this article. The results obtained are already influencing clinical practice in the US, where it has been estimated that 90% of patients receiving a CRT device now are being implanted with an ICD component. However, it is still today debated whether patients with LVSD and heart failure should be routinely offered a CRT-ICD. In fact, there are some issues that still should be solved before to establish indication for CRT-D in all heart failure patients with an indication for CRT: 1) a non complete agreement among the different societies which wrote recommendations for guidelines (a comparative table is reported); 2) a better identification of implantable patients and an amelioration of utilized devices; 3) economic and ethical ramifications of this therapy. Anyway still now the crucial question is: ''Can resynchronization be done in isolation or must be accompanied by an ICD device?''. To answer to this question we can only express which is, in our opinion, the actual position of many physicians who work in the field of pacing and electrophysiology: ''The lesson to be learned is that we still can not predict surely which patient will die of sudden death. Until a method of identifying the high risk patients can be developed, the safest strategy should be to advise a combined ICD-CRT device for patients with indication for CRT''.

Abstract

zCOSMOS is a large redshift survey that is being undertaken in the COSMOS field using 600 hours of observation with the VIMOS spectrograph on the 8-m VLT. The survey is designed to characterise the environments of COSMOS galaxies from the 100 kpc scales of galaxy groups up to the 100 Mpc scale of the cosmic web and to produce diagnostic information on galaxies and active galactic nuclei. The zCOSMOS survey consists of two parts: (a) zCOSMOS-bright, a magnitude-limited I-band IAB < 22.5 sample of about 20,000 galaxies with 0.1 < z < 1.2 covering the whole 1.7 deg2 COSMOS ACS field and designed to mimic the parameters of the 2dfGRS; and (b) zCOSMOS-deep, a survey of approximately 10,000 galaxies selected through colour-selection criteria to have 1.4 < z < 3.0, within the central 1 deg2. This paper describes the survey design and the construction of the target catalogues, and briefly outlines the observational program and the data pipeline. In the first observing season, spectra of 1303 zCOSMOS-bright targets and of 977 zCOSMOS-deep targets have been obtained. These are briefly analysed to demonstrate the characteristics that may be expected from zCOSMOS, and particularly zCOSMOS-bright, when it is finally completed between 2008-2009. The power of combining spectroscopic and photometric redshifts is demonstrated, especially in correctly identifying the emission line in single-line spectra and in determining which of the less reliable spectroscopic redshifts are correct and which are incorrect. Our zCOSMOS-deep spectra demonstrate the effectiveness of our selection techniques to isolate high redshift galaxies at 1.4 < z < 3.0 and of VIMOS to measure their redshifts using ultraviolet absorption lines., Comment: 24 pages plus 16 figures. Abstract

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) reduces the severity of functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) in patients with heart failure and left bundle branch block. Our hypothesis was that the induction of a more synchronous mitral valve anulus contraction can be a mechanism of FMR reduction in CRT patients.An echo tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) examination was performed at baseline and 6 months after biventricular pacing system implant in 30 patients (4 females and 26 males, 74.1+/-6.1 years) with dilatative or ischemic chronic heart failure, NYHA class = orIII, ejection fraction (EF) = or35% and QRS = or140 ms. EF, Myocardial Performance Index (MPI), left end-diastolic and systolic volumes (LVEDV, LVESV), mitral regurgitation jet area/left atrial area (JA/LAA), effective regurgitant orifice area (EROA), mitral anulus contraction (MAC) were evaluated. Using TDI, at the 6 left ventricle (LV) basal segments the time to the peak myocardial sustained systolic velocity (Ts) and the standard deviation (SD) of TS were evaluated.At 6 months follow-up NYHA class, EF, MPI were significantly improved, LV volumes were reduced. FMR degree, evaluated both as JA/LAA and EROA, was significantly reduced. This effect was associated with the 6 basal segments resynchronization and with a more effective annular contraction.Our data show that CRT by resynchronizing left ventricular basal segments produces a more effective mitral valve annulus contraction and contributes to FMR improvement. Further studies need to evaluate if this could be taken into account as new therapeutic perspective of functional mitral valve regurgitation.

Abstract

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is a multisystemic disease associated with mutations in the fibrillin-1 gene. Most of the reported mutations are missense substitutions mainly affecting the epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like protein domain structure and the calcium-binding (cb) site. The aim of our study was to investigate the correlation between fibrillin-1 frameshift mutations and the clinical phenotype in patients affected by MFS. In 48 out of 66 Marfan patients a pathogenetic mutation was found. We detected novel mutations causing premature termination codon in exons 19, 37, 40 and 41 of four Italian patients. The first mutation in exon 19 (cbEGF #8 domain) results in a clinical phenotype involving mainly the skeletal and cardiovascular systems. Interestingly, we noticed that, while mutations in exons 37 and 41 (eight cysteine domains #4 and #5) are milder, the mutation in exon 40 (cbEGF #24 domain) is more severe and causes major cardiovascular involvement with thoracic and abdominal aortic aneurysms. It is noteworthy that the degree of the severity in the phenotype of one of our patients and another from the literature carrying a mutation in exon 41 could be explained with alterations in mRNA expression.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate if single lead interatrial septum pacing could be effective in maintaining sinus rhythm in patients in whom restoration of sinus rhythm was only possible for a period of 2-24 hours after one or more previous electrical cardioversions, and in whom a sinus bradycardia was documented before arrhythmia restarted. The two hours limit was chosen because it was considered a sufficient time to implant a dual chamber pacemaker.Alternative atrial pacing techniques have been demonstrated to be successful in preventing recurrences of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with sinus bradycardia. Excluding the AF occurring after only a few sinus beats, at 24 hours from electrical cardioversion an early restart of chronic AF has been reported in 12% to 17% of the patients.After sinus rhythm was restored by internal electrical cardioversion, 17 patients, 7 ablated at the AV junction, underwent a dual chamber rate response (DDDR) pacemaker implantation with a screw-in atrial lead placed in the interatrial septum.After a follow-up period of 17+/-5 months (range 12 to 27 months) persistence of sinus rhythm was observed in 11 patients (65%). Six patients (35%) had recurrences of paroxysmal attacks, while five (30%) were totally free of AF. Recurrence of chronic AF was observed in six cases (35%) after 2 days-12 months from implantation. No dislodgements of the atrial lead and no complications were observed at implantation and during follow-up.Interatrial septum pacing is a safe and feasible technique with a satisfying success rate (65%) in long-term maintaining sinus rhythm in previously unsuccessfully cardioverted patients.

Abstract

There are a variety of approaches to the prevention of atrial fibrillation (AF) with pacing. Aim of this study was to test the safety and feasibility of interatrial septum pacing at the posterior triangle of Koch for AF prevention and to exclude potential arrhythmic effects.Interatrial septum pacing was performed in 34 patients (21 males, 13 females, mean age 69 +/- 12 years): 9 without a history and clinical evidence of atrial fibrillation (AF) (6 with sinus bradycardia, 2 with second-degree AV block, and 1 with carotid sinus hypersensitivity) and 25 with sinus bradycardia and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) (mean symptomatic episodes/month 6.2 +/- 10). In all patients a screw-in bipolar lead was positioned in the interatrial septum superiorly to the coronary sinus.At implant the mean P wave amplitude was 2.5 +/- 1.5 mV, the pacing threshold was 1 +/- 0.6 V and the impedance was 907 +/- 477 Ohm. Mean P wave duration was 118 +/- 17 ms in sinus rhythm and 82 +/- 15 during interatrial septum pacing (p0.001). During a mean follow-up period of 10 +/- 7 months, no patients without atrial tachyarrhythmias before implantation experienced AF. During a 9 +/- 6 months follow-up we observed only 2 symptomatic arrhythmia recurrences between AF patients (mean symptomatic episodes/month 0.006 +/- 0.0022) (p0.01 vs before implant period).Our data indicate that interatrial septal pacing is safe and feasible. A significant less incidence of arrhythmic episodes has been observed during follow-up. Further controlled randomized prospective studies are necessary to establish the exact role of this technique respect to conventional or multisite stimulation when patients with paroxysmal AF need to be permanently paced.

Abstract

To evaluate the existence of a peculiar atrial electrophysiologic substrate, we studied 18 patients with asymptomatic Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome. These patients were compared with 10 age-matched normal subjects (N). Effective and functional refractory periods were determined at two right atrial sites (high and low in the lateral wall), during atrial pacing (100 min-1) and at twice diastolic threshold. Disperson (D) of effective (ERP) and functional (FRP) refractoriness was evaluated as the difference between refractory periods at the two atrial sites. WPW patients showed significantly lower mean values of effective and functional refractoriness at both atrial sites and significantly higher mean values of D-ERP and D-FRP. Moreover, in calculating the highest normal values of D-ERP and D-FRP (as mean values of N plus 2SD) it was observed that WPW with abnormal values of D showed a statistically (chi 2 test) higher incidence (100%) of induced atrial fibrillation (AF). These findings indicate the existence of both an abnormal atrial electrophysiologic substrate and of a higher vulnerability in WPW. Finally, AF was induced generally at the site with the lower refractoriness (i.e. low lateral site). This should be taken into account when considering how atrial fibrillation can be induced more easily.

Abstract

In cluster headache an adrenergic dysfunction of the pupillary sympathetic system can be demonstrated even during pain-free periods by instillation of tyramine in the conjunctival sac. In this study 10 patients with typical cluster headache syndrome exhibited a positive tyramine conjunctival test (minor mydriatic response in the pain side). As the adrenergic dysfunction may also involve the heart, possible neurogenic changes in ventricular repolarization were investigated in a group of patients with cluster headache by means of a hyperventilation test. When compared to controls, an increase of the QTc interval, a faster heart rate and a minor shortening of the QT interval, were observed. In all cases except one the T waves became bifid or inverted, sometimes showing a pseudoischemic aspect. Since the positive response to hyperventilation seems to depend on an asynchronous repolarization which can, in turn, be related to asymmetric sympathetic function, the present results seem to suggest the presence of a possible lateralization of the cardiac sympathetic function, in cluster headache patients.

Abstract

The effects of isoproterenal (ISP) and methoxamine (MTX) infusion in 20 asymptomatic subjects with labile T wave were studied. In those treated with ISP the T wave showed an early negative trend and later became clearly positive in 5 subjects. In the majority of the subjects treated with MTX the T wave became positive. T wave changes match variations of both the ventricular gradient and, to a lesser degree, the QRS area. These changes were not related to heart rate or, in the subjects treated with MTX, to the baroreceptorial sensitivity deduced from the slope of the regression equation between R-R internal and systolic arterial pressure. The results of this study confirm the existence of a neurogenic mechanism affecting the electrocardiographic changes in T wave.

The dynamics of placental transfer of digoxin (beta-methyl-digoxin) has been studied in 20 pregnant women. The drug was administered in a single dose, intravenously, during labor. The samples drawn within the first hour after administration showed significantly lower fetal serum digoxin concentrations (SDC) than in the mother. No significant difference appeared in specimens collected after the first hour.

Abstract

We present a method to test the isotropy of the magnitude–redshift relation of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) and single out the most discrepant direction (in terms of the signal-to-noise ratio) with respect to the all-sky data. Our technique accounts for possible directional variations of the corrections for SNe Ia and yields all-sky maps of the best-fit cosmological parameters with arbitrary angular resolution. To show its potential, we apply our method to the high-redshift SNe Ia from the recent Union2.1 compilation, building maps with three different angular resolutions. We use a Monte Carlo method to estimate the statistical significance with which we could reject the null hypothesis that the magnitude–redshift relation is isotropic based on the properties of the observed most discrepant directions. We find that, based on pure signal-to-noise arguments, the null hypothesis cannot be rejected at any meaningful confidence level. However, if we also consider that the strongest deviations in the Union2.1 sample closely align with the dipole temperature anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background, we find that the null hypothesis should be rejected at the 95%–99% confidence level, slightly depending on the angular resolution of the study. If this result is not due to a statistical fluke, it might either indicate that the SN data have not been cleaned from all possible systematics or even point toward new physics. We finally discuss future perspectives in the field for achieving larger and more uniform data sets that will vastly improve the quality of the results and optimally exploit our method. Abstract

The Complete Calibration of the Color-Redshift Relation survey (C3R2) is a spectroscopic programme designed to empirically calibrate the galaxy color-redshift relation to the Euclid depth (I_E=24.5), a key ingredient for the success of Stage IV dark energy projects based on weak lensing cosmology. A spectroscopic calibration sample as representative as possible of the galaxies in the Euclid weak lensing sample is being collected, selecting galaxies from a self-organizing map (SOM) representation of the galaxy color space. Here, we present the results of a near-infrared H- and K-bands spectroscopic campaign carried out using the LUCI instruments at the LBT. Abstract

We explore the inter-relationships between mass, star-formation rate and environment in the SDSS, zCOSMOS and other surveys. The differential effects of mass and environment are completely separable to z ~ 1, indicating that two distinct processes are operating, "mass-quenching" and "environment-quenching". Environment-quenching, at fixed over-density, evidently does not change with epoch to z ~ 1, suggesting that it occurs as large-scale structure develops in the Universe. The observed constancy of the mass-function shape for star-forming galaxies, demands that the mass-quenching of galaxies around and above M*, must be proportional to their star-formation rates at all z < 2. We postulate that this simple mass-quenching law also holds over a much broader range of stellar mass and epoch. These two simple quenching processes, plus some additional quenching due to merging, then naturally produce (a) a quasi-static Schechter mass function for star-forming galaxies with a value of M* that is set by the proportionality between the star-formation and mass-quenching rates, (b) a double Schechter function for passive galaxies with two components: the dominant one is produced by mass-quenching and has exactly the same M* as the star-forming galaxies but an alpha shallower by +1, while the other is produced by environment effects and has the same M* and alpha as the star-forming galaxies, and is larger in high density environments. Subsequent merging of quenched galaxies modifies these predictions somewhat in the denser environments, slightly increasing M* and making alpha more negative. All of these detailed quantitative relationships between the Schechter parameters are indeed seen in the SDSS, lending strong support to our simple empirically-based model. The model naturally produces for passive galaxies the "anti-hierarchical" run of mean ages and alpha-element abundances with mass., 66 pages, 19 figures, 1 movie, accepted for publication in ApJ. Abstract

We study the evolution of galaxies inside and outside of the group environment since z=1 using a large well defined set of groups and galaxies from the zCOSMOS-bright redshift survey in the COSMOS field. The fraction of galaxies with early-type morphologies increases monotonically with M_B luminosity and stellar mass and with cosmic epoch. It is higher in the groups than elsewhere, especially at later epochs. The emerging environmental effect is superposed on a strong global mass-driven evolution, and at z~0.5 and log(M*/Msol)~10.2, the "effect" of group environment is equivalent to (only) about 0.2 dex in stellar mass or 2 Gyr in time. The stellar mass function of galaxies in groups is enriched in massive galaxies. We directly determine the transformation rates from late to early morphologies, and for transformations involving colour and star formation indicators. The transformation rates are systematically about twice as high in the groups as outside, or up to 3-4 times higher correcting for infall and the appearance of new groups. The rates reach values, for masses around the crossing mass 10^10.5 Msol, as high as (0.3-0.7)/Gyr in the groups, implying transformation timescales of 1.4-3 Gyr, compared with less than 0.2/Gyr, i.e. timescales >5 Gyr, outside of groups. All three transformation rates decrease at higher stellar masses, and must decrease also at the lower masses below 10^10 Msol which we cannot well probe. The rates involving colour and star formation are consistently higher than those for morphology, by a factor of about 50%. We study the spatial clustering of 538 X-ray selected AGN in the 2 deg^2 XMM-COSMOS field that are spectroscopically identified to I_{AB} 3 x 10^{10} M_sun) at the same redshift. This suggests that AGN at z~1 are preferentially hosted by massive galaxies, as observed both in the local and in the distant (z~2) Universe. Abstract

Objectives: In a cross-sectional study, we explored possible differences in sleep parameters between SLE patients and age- and gender-matched healthy controls through actigraphic and self-reported measures. Furthermore, we aimed to identify possible predictors of such disturbances in the patient cohort., Methods: Participants' sociodemographic data and sleep parameters were collected. Sleep parameters were evaluated through the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, the Insomnia Severity Index and 7-day actigraphic monitoring. The 10-item Perceived Stress Scale was used to investigate stress. Disease activity and daily glucocorticoid dose were assessed in SLE patients. Possible predictors of the SLE group were explored through two binomial logistic models. Within the SLE group, possible predictors of sleep parameters were tested estimating multiple linear regression models., Results: A total of 40 SLE patients and 33 controls were included in the study. The SLE group showed worse sleep maintenance actigraphic parameters (i.e. sleep efficiency and wake after sleep onset), higher total sleep time and higher perceived stress. Within the SLE cohort, the daily glucocorticoids dose was associated with an impairment in sleep maintenance despite no reduction in sleep duration, typical of normal sleep duration insomnia, whereas perceived stress was associated with short sleep duration insomnia., Conclusion: Compared with healthy controls, SLE patients showed worse sleep quality and greater perceived stress severity. As glucocorticoids and perceived stress are associated with different types of insomnia in these patients, a multidimensional approach to both sleep characterization and therapy might be preferred., (© The Author(s) 2023. 47. Radial Acceleration Relation of ΛCDM Satellite Galaxies.

Abstract

The radial acceleration measured in bright galaxies tightly correlates with that generated by the observed distribution of baryons, a phenomenon known as the radial acceleration relation (RAR). Dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies have been recently found to depart from the extrapolation of the RAR measured for more massive objects but with a substantially larger scatter. If confirmed by new data, this result provides a powerful test of the theory of gravity at low accelerations that requires robust theoretical predictions. By using high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations, we show that, within the standard model of cosmology (ΛCDM), satellite galaxies are expected to follow the same RAR as brighter systems but with a much larger scatter which does not correlate with the physical properties of the galaxies. In the simulations, the RAR evolves mildly with redshift. Moreover, the acceleration due to the gravitational field of the host has no effect on the RAR. This is in contrast with the external field effect in modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) which causes galaxies in strong external fields to deviate from the RAR. This difference between ΛCDM and MOND offers a possible way to discriminate between them.

Abstract

Euclid is a European Space Agency medium-class mission selected for launch in 2020 within the cosmic vision 2015-2025 program. The main goal of Euclid is to understand the origin of the accelerated expansion of the universe. Euclid will explore the expansion history of the universe and the evolution of cosmic structures by measuring shapes and red-shifts of galaxies as well as the distribution of clusters of galaxies over a large fraction of the sky. Although the main driver for Euclid is the nature of dark energy, Euclid science covers a vast range of topics, from cosmology to galaxy evolution to planetary research. In this review we focus on cosmology and fundamental physics, with a strong emphasis on science beyond the current standard models. We discuss five broad topics: dark energy and modified gravity, dark matter, initial conditions, basic assumptions and questions of methodology in the data analysis. This review has been planned and carried out within Euclid's Theory Working Group and is meant to provide a guide to the scientific themes that will underlie the activity of the group during the preparation of the Euclid mission.

Abstract

Background: Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the most frequent congenital heart disease with frequent involvement in thoracic aortic dilatation, aneurysm and dissection. Although BAV and Marfan syndrome (MFS) share some clinical features, and some MFS patients with BAV display mutations in FBN1, the gene encoding fibrillin-1, the genetic background of isolated BAV is poorly defined., Methods: Ten consecutive BAV patients [8 men, age range 24-42 years] without MFS were clinically characterized. BAV phenotype and function, together with evaluation of aortic morphology, were comprehensively assessed by Doppler echocardiography. Direct sequencing of each FBN1 exon with flanking intron sequences was performed on eight patients., Results: We detected three FBN1 mutations in two patients (aged 24 and 25 years) displaying aortic root aneurysm ≥50 mm and moderate aortic regurgitation. In particular, one patient had two mutations (p.Arg2726Trp and p.Arg636Gly) one of which has been previously associated with variable Marfanoid phenotypes. The other patient showed a pArg529Gln substitution reported to be associated with an incomplete MFS phenotype., Conclusions: The present findings enlarge the clinical spectrum of isolated BAV to include patients with BAV without MFS who have involvement of FBN1 gene. These results underscore the importance of accurate phenotyping of BAV aortopathy and of clinical characterization of BAV patients, including investigation of systemic connective tissue manifestations and genetic testing.
