We investigate the build-up of the accreted stellar and dark matter haloes of Milky Way-like galaxies in APOSTLE suite of cosmological hydrodynamics simulations. We show that the stellar halo is made up primarily of stars stripped from a small number of massive dwarfs, most of which are disrupted by the present day. The dark matter halo, on the other hand, is made up primarily of small unresolved subhaloes ($\lesssim 10^6$ M$_{\odot}$) and a ``smooth'' component consisting of particles which were never bound to a subhalo. Despite these differences, the massive dwarfs that make up the majority of the stellar halo also contribute a significant fraction of the dark matter. The stars and dark matter stripped from these dwarfs are related through their kinematics and this leaves imprints in the phase-space structure of the haloes. We examine the relation between the location of features, such as caustics, in the phase space of the stars and dark halo properties. We show that the ``edge'' of the stellar halo is a probe of dark matter halo mass and assembly history. We present a model for the satellites of the Milky Way in which galaxy formation is followed using semi-analytic techniques applied to the six high-resolution N-body simulations of galactic halos of the Aquarius project. The model, calculated using the Galform code, incorporates improved treatments of the relevant physics in the LambdaCDM cosmogony, particularly a self-consistent calculation of reionization by UV photons emitted by the forming galaxy population, including the progenitors of the central galaxy. Along the merger tree of each halo, the model calculates gas cooling (by Compton scattering off cosmic microwave background photons, molecular hydrogen and atomic processes), gas heating (from hydrogen photoionization and supernova energy), star formation and evolution. The evolution of the intergalactic medium is followed simultaneously with that of the galaxies. Star formation in the more massive progenitor subhalos is suppressed primarily by supernova feedback, while for smaller subhalos it is suppressed primarily by photoionization due to external and internal sources. The model is constrained to match a wide range of properties of the present day galaxy population as a whole, but at high redshift it requires an escape fraction of UV photons near unity in order completely to reionize the universe by redshift z ~ 8. In the most successful model the local sources photoionize the pre-galactic region completely by z ~ 10. In addition to the luminosity function of Milky Way satellites, the model matches their observed luminosity-metallicity relation, their radial distribution and the inferred values of the mass within 300 pc, which in the models increase slowly but significantly with luminosity. There is a large variation in satellite properties from halo to halo, with the luminosity function, for example, varying by a factor of ~ 2 among the six simulations.

We use very large cosmological N--body simulations to obtain accurate predictions for the two-point correlations and power spectra of mass-limited samples of galaxy clusters. We consider two currently popular cold dark matter (CDM) cosmogonies, a critical density model ($\tau$CDM) and a flat low density model with a cosmological constant ($\Lambda$CDM). Our simulations each use $10^9$ particles to follow the mass distribution within cubes of side $2h^{-1}$Gpc ($\tau$CDM) and $3h^{-1}$Gpc ($\Lambda$CDM) with a force resolution better than $10^{-4}$ of the cube side. We investigate how the predicted cluster correlations increase for samples of increasing mass and decreasing abundance. Very similar behaviour is found in the two cases. The correlation length increases from $r_0=12$ -- 13$h^{-1}$Mpc for samples with mean separation $d_{\rm c}=30h^{-1}$Mpc to $r_0=22$-- 27$h^{-1}$Mpc for samples with $d_{\rm c}=100h^{-1}$Mpc. The lower value here corresponds to $\tau$CDM and the upper to $\Lambda$CDM. The power spectra of these cluster samples are accurately parallel to those of the mass over more than a decade in scale. Both correlation lengths and power spectrum biases can be predicted to better than 10% using the simple model of Sheth, Mo & Tormen (2000). This prediction requires only the linear mass power spectrum and has no adjustable parameters. We compare our predictions with published results for the APM cluster sample. The observed variation of correlation length with richness agrees well with the models, particularly for $\Lambda$CDM. The observed power spectrum (for a cluster sample of mean separation $d_{\rm c}=31h^{-1}$Mpc) lies significantly above the predictions of both models.

We present the catalogue, mask, redshift data and selection function for the PSCz survey of 15411 IRAS galaxies across 84% of the sky. Most of the IRAS data is taken from the Point Source Catalog, but this has been supplemented and corrected in various ways to improve the completeness and uniformity. We quantify the known imperfections in the catalogue, and we assess the overall uniformity, completeness and data quality. We find that overall the catalogue is complete and uniform to within a few percent at high latitudes and 10% at low latitudes. We present six simulations of galactic stellar haloes formed by the tidal disruption of accreted dwarf galaxies in a fully cosmological setting. Our model is based on the Aquarius project, a suite of high resolution N-body simulations of individual dark matter haloes. We tag subsets of particles in these simulations with stellar populations predicted by the Galform semi-analytic model. Our method self-consistently tracks the dynamical evolution and disruption of satellites from high redshift. The luminosity function and structural properties of surviving satellites, which agree well with observations, suggest that this technique is appropriate. We have implemented a simple model to identify the likely sites of the first stars and galaxies in the high-resolution simulations of the formation of galactic dark matter halos of the Aquarius Project. The first star in a galaxy like the Milky Way formed around redshift z=35; by z=10, the young galaxy contained up to 30000 dark matter haloes capable of forming stars by molecular hydrogen cooling. These minihaloes were strongly clustered and feedback may have severely limited the actual number of Population III stars that formed. By the present day, the remnants of the first stars would be strongly concentrated to the centre of the main halo. If a second generation of long-lived stars formed near the first (the first star relics), we would expect to find half of them within 30kpc/h of the galactic centre and a significant fraction in satellites where they may be singled out by their anomalous metallicity patterns. The first halo in which gas could cool by atomic hydrogen line radiation formed at z=25; by z=10, the number of such first galaxies had increased to ~300. Feedback might have decreased the number of first galaxies at the time they undergo significant star formation, but not the number that survive to the present because near neighbours merge. Half of all the "first galaxies" that form before z=10 merge with the main halo before z~3 and most lose a significant fraction of their mass. However, today there should still be more than 20 remnants orbiting within the central ~30kpc/h of the Milky Way. These satellites have circular velocities of a few kilometers per second or more, comparable to those of known Milky Way dwarfs. The luminosity function of galaxies is central to many problems in cosmology, including the interpretation of faint number counts. The near-infrared provides several advantages over the optical for statistical studies of galaxies, including smooth and well-understood K-corrections and expected luminosity evolution. The K–band is dominated by near-solar mass stars which make up the bulk of the galaxy. The absolute K magnitude is a measure of the visible mass in a galaxy, and thus the K–band luminosity function is an observational counterpart of the mass function of galaxies.

We apply the formalism of spherical harmonic decomposition to the galaxy density field of the IRAS PSCz redshift survey. The PSCz redshift survey has almost all-sky coverage and includes IRAS galaxies to a flux limit of 0.6 Jy. Using maximum likelihood methods to examine (to first order) the distortion of the galaxy pattern due to redshift coordinates, we have measured the parameter \beta= \Omega^{0.6}/b. We also simultaneously measure (a) the undistorted amplitude of perturbations in the galaxy distribution when a parameterised power spectrum is assumed, or (b) the shape and amplitude of the real-space power spectrum if the band-power in a set of passbands is measured in a step- wise fashion. These methods are extensively tested on a series of CDM, \Lambda CDM and MDM simulations and are found to be unbiased. We obtain consistent results for the subset of the PSCz catalogue with flux above 0.75 Jy but inclusion of galaxies to the formal flux limit of the catalogue gives variations which are larger than our internal errors. For the 0.75 Jy catalogue we find, in the case of a parameterised power spectrum, \beta=0.58\pm0.26 and the amplitude of the real space power measured at wavenumber k=0.1 h/Mpc is \Delta_{0.1}=0.42 \pm 0.03. Freeing the shape of the power spectrum we find that \beta=0.47\pm 0.16 (conditional error), and \Delta_{0.1}=0.47 \pm 0.03. The shape of the real-space power spectrum is consistent with a \Gamma= 0.2 CDM-like shape parameter, but does not strongly rule out a number of other models. Finally by combining our estimate of the amplitude of galaxy clustering and the distortion parameter we find the amplitude of mass fluctuations on a scale k=0.1 \hmpc is \Delta_\rho = 0.24 \Omega_0^{-0.6}$, with an uncertainty of 50%., Comment: 24 pages (Latex), 12 postscript figures included, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We discuss early results from the first large N-body/hydrodynamical simulation to resolve the formation of galaxies in a cold dark matter universe. The simulation follows the formation of galaxies by gas cooling within dark halos of mass a few times $10^{11}\Msun$ and above, in a flat universe with a positive cosmological constant. Over 2200 galaxies form in our simulated volume of $(100 \Mpc)^3$. Assigning luminosities to the model galaxies using a spectral population synthesis model results in a K-band luminosity function in excellent agreement with observations. The two-point correlation function of galaxies in the simulation evolves very little since $z=3$ and has a shape close to a power-law over four orders of magnitude in amplitude. At the present day, the galaxy correlation function in the simulation is antibiased relative to the mass on small scales and unbiased on large scales. We have measured the ellipticities of 52 globular clusters in the LMC and 93 in the Galaxy by eye from polaroid enlargements of the sky surveys (Frenk & Fall 1982). In most cases, the measurements pertain to regions between (1–2)rh where rh is the median radius of a cluster; i.e. the radius containing half of the light in three dimensions. These were compared with determinations based on star counts for 12 members of the LMC sample and 19 members of the Galactic sample. We found no systematic difference between the ellipticities from the two methods and concluded that the eye-measurements are free of any major bias. They are also in reasonable agreement with the measurements by Geyer & Richtler (1981) and Geyer, Hopp & Nelles (1983), who used the Agfa contourfilm technique. The ellipticities measured by Geisler & Hodge (1980) from microdensitometer scans are systematically large in comparison with our results and those of Geyer and his associates. Since the scans cover only a small part of each cluster, a few bright stars can cause spurious elongations in the fitted contours.

We compare the results of thirteen cosmological gasdynamical codes used to simulate the formation of a galaxy in the LCDM structure formation paradigm. The various runs differ in their hydrodynamical treatment (SPH, moving-mesh and AMR) but share the same initial conditions and adopt their latest published model of cooling, star formation and feedback. Despite the common halo assembly history, we find large code-to-code variations in the stellar mass, size, morphology and gas content of the galaxy at z=0, due mainly to the different implementations of feedback. Compared with observation, most codes tend to produce an overly massive galaxy, smaller and less gas-rich than typical spirals, with a massive bulge and a declining rotation curve. A stellar disk is discernible in most simulations, though its prominence varies widely from code to code. There is a well-defined trend between the effects of feedback and the severity of the disagreement with observation. Models that are more effective at limiting the baryonic mass of the galaxy come closer to matching observed galaxy scaling laws, but often to the detriment of the disk component. Our conclusions hold at two different numerical resolutions. Some differences can also be traced to the numerical techniques: more gas seems able to cool and become available for star formation in grid-based codes than in SPH. However, this effect is small compared to the variations induced by different feedback prescriptions. We conclude that state-of-the-art simulations cannot yet uniquely predict the properties of the baryonic component of a galaxy, even when the assembly history of its host halo is fully specified. Developing feedback algorithms that can effectively regulate the mass of a galaxy without hindering the formation of high-angular momentum stellar disks remains a challenge., 28 pages, 16 figures, MNRAS accepted.
