Higher intensity of strong-coupling stimulated Brillouin scattering (SC-SBS) amplification is achieved by supplementary Raman amplification. In the new scheme, a Raman pump laser first amplifies the seed pulse in the homogeneous plasma, then a SC-SBS pump laser continues the amplification in the inhomogeneous plasma in order to suppress the spontaneous instability of pump lasers. The intensity of seed laser gets higher and the duration of seed laser gets shorter than that in the pure SC-SBS scheme with the same incident energy, while the energy conversion effciency is not significantly reduced. We also found that the SC-SBS amplification is seeded by the \pi pulse of Raman amplification. The results obtained from envelope coupling equations, Vlasov simulations and two-dimensional particle-in-cell(PIC) simulations agree with each other. This scheme is a simple and effective way to improve the SC-SBS amplification and is easy to implement in experiments.

[FeIII(OMe)(Hedtb)](ClO4)3·6.5CH3OH (1) and [FeIII(On-Bu)(Hedtb)](ClO4)3·3n-BuOH (2) (edtb = N,N,N',N'-tetrakis[(2-benzimidazolyl)methyl]-1,2-ethanediamine ) were prepared and display lipoxygenase activity. X-ray crystallography reveals that the FeIII centers in complexes 1 and 2 are ligated to three nitrogens of benzimidazole and two alkylamine nitrogen atoms from the edtb ligand, with a terminal alkyoxyl group occupying the sixth position. Complexes 1 and 2 both possess a FeIII—OR center (R = Me, 1; n-Bu, 2) with Fe—O bond distances of 1.799(3) Å and 1.789(5) Å, respectively. The UV-Vis spectra and electrochemical properties of the complexes were recorded. Both complexes have strong absorption peaks at around 375 nm and display lipoxygenase activity.

We theoretically and numerically study the merger phenomenon of the ion-phase vortex structure in hydrogen plasma. The results indicate that the merging of vortex structures during the nonlinear evolution of ion-acoustic waves (IAW) is mainly due to two-ion decay (TID) instability. When the daughter IAWs of the TID grow to be comparable to the fundamental mode, vortex merging will occur. Furthermore, the vortex merging can abruptly convert the significant energy of the fundamental mode into subharmonic energy, resulting in saturation for the TID of the fundamental mode. After several vortex-merging processes, the system eventually evolves into a turbulent state. In particular, the TID growth rate has been improved by considering two additional second-order coupling terms in this paper, which agree much better with the simulation results. Finally, the importance of the electron kinetic effects in the TID process is also presented by comparing hybrid-Vlasov and full-Vlasov simulations.

This study proposes a novel method to mitigate stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) using multicolor alternating-polarization bundle light. The bundle light combines multiwavelength, spike trains of uneven duration and delay for a single beam to multicolor alternating polarization for bundle beams. SBS suppression is verified using a three-dimensional large-scale laser plasma code. The numerical results show that the SBS reflectivity can be decreased by nearly two orders in low density plasma. The proposed method can extend the repetition time of a single beam from several picoseconds to tens of picoseconds. Moreover, it has potential applications in inertial confinement fusion research.

In one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations of a plasma irradiated by linearly polarized lasers from both sides of boundaries, it is found that there is an appreciable growth of the electromagnetic field in cavitons in the transverse direction perpendicular to the direction of polarization, which indicates the polarization conversion of the electromagnetic field in cavitons. This paper demonstrates the mechanism of this phenomenon based on parametric resonance induced by ponderomotive force with twice the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation in the caviton. We develop a theoretical model and verify it with simulation results. This phenomenon contributes to the heating and acceleration of particles and traps more EM energy in cavitons.

Theory of absolute stimulated Brillouin side scattering in an inhomogeneous flowing plasma is presented and verified numerically. The linearized coupling equations are transformed into a Schrödinger equation in k space and solved as an eigenvalue problem. Analytic threshold, growth rate, and scattering geometry are obtained for the pump laser with arbitrary incidence angle. Numerical solutions of the coupling equations show good agreements between the theoretical and numerical absolute thresholds when ion-acoustic wave damping is not too large, and thus an old but famous threshold in [Phys. Fluids 17, 1211 (1974)PFLDAS0031-917110.1063/1.1694867] is corrected. It also indicates that the theoretical analysis is not accurate for strong dampings, since it will overestimate the absolute threshold. Possibility of finding such instability in the current experiments is also discussed.

In recent years, as a result of the significant development of information and communications technology, people have been paying much attention to automated guided vehicles (AGVs). In the ongoing global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, hospital services have been seriously impacted. In the severe medical situation in hospitals, there is a serious shortage of human resources. This paper presents a novel automated guided vehicle (AGV) for guidance and service. The AGV is comprised of a microcontroller unit (MCU), a power unit, a human sensing unit, a collision warning unit, and a path sensing unit. The motion speed of the AGV and the distance between the AGV and the person being guided are determined by the MCU, the power unit, sensors, and an algorithm. The collision warning unit comprises three ultrasonic sensors and an infrared sensor in the front of the AGV in order to avoid obstacles. The trajectory results of the planned and actual paths are in good agreement. The AGV provides safe and effective guidance for people moving towards their destination. The AGV achieves excellent guidance results and shows great potential for guidance applications in hospitals.

A one-third triangular resonator with two electric walls and two virtual magnetic walls is used to realize a compact wideband bandpass filter. This structure is fulfilled by taking out an isosceles or equilateral triangular resonator of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) version and therefore, it is called one-third-mode substrate integrated resonator (OTMSIR). Based on one single cavity, a quadruple-mode technique is used to design a compact filter by adding an elliptical metallic via-hole and using detected ground structure (DGS). Finally, a 12.6 GHz bandwidth planar quadruple-mode filter is fabricated and tested. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Terahertz gyrotrons in harmonic operation offer the magnetic-field reduction, but they also easily generate various competing modes that operate at low harmonics. In this paper, we used a nonlinear multi-mode code to comparatively analyze the second-harmonic TE 8,9 -mode backward-wave-driven gyrotron, forward-wave-driven gyrotron, and gyrotron traveling-wave amplifier (gyro-TWA).

SUMMARYTen leading varieties of winter wheat released during 1950–2009 in North China were tested in a free-air temperature increase (FATI) facility. The FATI facility mimicked the local air temperature pattern well, with an increase of 1·1 °C in the daily mean temperature. For all the tested varieties, warming caused a significant reduction in the total length of wheat growth period by 5 days and especially in the pre-anthesis period, where it was reduced by 9 days. However, warming increased wheat biomass production and grain yield by 8·4 and 11·4%, respectively, on an average of all the tested varieties. There was no significant difference in the warming-led reduction in the entire growth period among the tested varieties. Interestingly, the warming-led increments in biomass production and grain yield increased along with the variety release year. Significantly higher warming-led increases in post-anthesis biomass production and 1000-grain weight were found in the new varieties compared to the old ones. Meanwhile, a significant improvement in plant productivity was noted due to wheat breeding during the past six decades, while no significant difference in the length of entire growth period was found among the varieties released in different eras. The results demonstrate that historical wheat breeding might have enhanced winter wheat productivity and adaptability through exploiting the positive effects rather than mitigating the negative impacts of warming on wheat growth in North China.

SUMMARYFertilizer application can play an important role in soil organic carbon (SOC) retention and dynamics. The mechanisms underlying long-term accumulation and protection of SOC in intensive maize cropping systems, however, have not been well documented for cool high-latitude rainfed areas. Based on a 23-year fertilization experiment under a continuous maize cropping system at Gongzhuling, Jilin Province, China, the effects of fertilization regimes on SOC content and soil aggregate-associated carbon (C) composition were investigated. Results showed that, within the 0–1·0 m soil profile, SOC contents decreased significantly with soil depth in all treatments. In the topsoil layer (0–0·2 m), SOC concentrations in balanced inorganic fertilizers plus farmyard manure (MNPK), fallow system (FAL) and balanced inorganic fertilizers plus maize straw residue (SNPK) treatments were significantly greater than initial levels by 61·0, 34·1 and 20·1%, respectively. The MNPK and SNPK treatments increased SOC content by 50·7 and 12·4% compared to the unfertilized control in the topsoil layer, whereas no significant differences were found between balanced inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (NPK) and the unfertilized control treatment. There were no significant differences in aggregate-size distribution among the unfertilized control, NPK and MNPK treatments, whereas the SNPK treatment significantly enhanced the formation of micro-aggregates (53–250 μm) and decreased the formation of silt+clay aggregates (μm) compared to the unfertilized control, NPK and MNPK treatments. Moreover, SOC concentrations in all aggregate fractions in the MNPK treatment were the highest among treatments. Furthermore, the MNPK treatment significantly increased SOC stock in micro- and silt+clay aggregates, which may slow down C decomposition in the soil. These results indicate that long-term manure amendment can benefit SOC sequestration and stability in the black soil of Northeast China.

A target composition scheme to optimize the combined proton acceleration regime is presented and verified by two-dimensional particle-in-cell (2D PIC) simulations by using an ultra-intense circularly-polarized (CP) laser pulse irradiating an overdense hydrocarbon (CH) target, instead of a pure hydrogen (H) one. The combined acceleration regime is a two-stage proton acceleration scheme combining the radiation pressure dominated acceleration (RPDA) stage and the laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) stage sequentially together. With an ultra-intense CP laser pulse irradiating an overdense CH target, followed by an underdense tritium plasma gas, protons with higher energies (from about $20$ GeV up to about $30$ GeV) and lower energy spreads (from about $18\%$ down to about $5\%$ in full-width at half-maximum, or FWHM) are generated, as compared to the use of a pure H target. It is because protons can be more stably pre-accelerated in the first RPDA stage when using CH targets. With the increase of the carbon-to-hydrogen density ratio, the energy spread is lower and the maximum proton energy is higher. It also shows that for the same laser intensity around $10^{22}$ $Wcm^{-2}$, using the CH target will lead to a higher proton energy, as compared to the use of a pure H target. Terahertz gyrotrons in harmonic operation offer the magnetic-field reduction, but they can also still easily generate various competing modes that operate at low harmonics. In this paper, an injection-locking technique for phase control and spectral purity is employed to enhance the operating modes and suppress the competing modes in gyrotrons. The simulation results, using a multi-mode time-independent code, show that gyrotrons driven by backward or forward waves cannot avoid mode competition wherever the input power increases. To avoid the fundamental harmonic competing mode, a second-harmonic gyrotron traveling-wave amplifier (gyro-TWA) with a severed section is used instead of the driven gyrotrons. The gyro-TWA operates at a slightly low external magnetic field and has a uniform interaction structure. The anti-Stokes scattering and Stokes scattering in stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) cascade have been researched by the Vlasov-Maxwell simulation. In the high-intensity laser-plasmas interaction, the stimulated anti-Stokes Brillouin scattering (SABS) will occur after the second stage SBS rescattering. The mechanism of SABS has been put forward to explain this phenomenon. And the SABS will compete with the SBS rescattering to determine the total SBS reflectivity. Thus, the SBS rescattering including the SABS is an important saturation mechanism of SBS, and should be taken into account in the high-intensity laser-plasmas interaction., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Temperature is known to play a crucial role in the population dynamics of insects. Insects have evolved different mechanisms to resist unfavorable extreme temperatures. In recent years, western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), and onion thrips, Thrips tabaci (Lindeman) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), have caused significant damage to vegetable crops. Because of global warming and expanding areas of vegetable cultivation, a study of the effects of heat stress on these thrips species is warranted. We exposed the various developmental stages of western flower thrips and onion thrips to temperatures of 41, 43, or 45 degrees C for 2, 6, 12, 24, or 36 h to determine the effects of heat stress on survival. Our results showed that the heat resistance of nonadult western flower thrips was greater than that of the nonadult onion thrips, and that the natural heat resistant ability was the primary factor in heat resistance in western flower thrips. In contrast, the heat resistance of adult onion thrips was greater than that of the adult western flower thrips, which was primarily the result of the ability of searching suitable microenvironment that enabled the onion thrips to mitigate the effects of high temperatures more efficiently than the western flower thrips. Our analysis of the differences in heat resistance between western flower thrips and onion thrips provides important information for the development of thermal treatments for controlling western flower thrips and onion thrips.

Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen (CTLA-4) is an important downregulator of T-cell activation. In order to analyze the expression and regulation of CTLA-4 on human peripheral T cells, CTLA-4 mRNA and protein expression were determined using analysis by reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR) and FACs, respectively. Intracellular CTLA-4 was constitutively expressed in unstimulated CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Interleukin (IL)-2 induced a dose-dependent increase of both intracellular and surface expression of CTLA-4 (CD152). Most of the CD4+ and CD8+ cells expressing CTLA-4 also expressed CD25. Interferon (IFN)-γ induced the upregulation of CTLA-4 expression via antigen-presenting cells (APC) activation. The CTLA-4delTM mRNA (550 bp) had a shorter half-life than the full length CTLA-4 mRNA and the expression was downregulated upon activation of the cells by treatment with IL-2. Given an inhibitory role of CTLA-4 and CD4+ CD25+ T cells in immune responses, the present findings suggest that IL-2-induced immunosuppression may result from its stimulatory effect of the CTLA-4 expression.

Slow-time-scale magnetic fields driven by fast-time-scale electromagnetic waves or plasma waves are examined from the perspective of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations for a relativistic Vlasov plasma. An equation for slow-time-scale magnetic field is obtained. The field proposed in the present paper is a result of wave–wave beating which drives a solenoidal current. The magnitude of the slow-time-scale magnetic field proposed here can be as high as 20 MG at the critical surface for a laser intensity I=1018 W/cm2 at wavelength λ0=1.05 μm. The predicted magnetic field is observed in two-dimensional particle simulations presented here.

It is shown that well collimated mono-energetic ion beams with a large particle number can be generated in the hole-boring radiation pressure acceleration regime by using an elliptically polarized laser pulse with appropriate theoretically determined laser polarization ratio. Due to the $\bm{J}\times\bm{B}$ effect, the double-layer charge separation region is imbued with hot electrons that prevent ion pileup, thus suppressing the double-layer oscillations. The experiment results on spontaneous magnetic fields given by Najmudin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 215004 (2001)] can be explained by the kinetic model proposed by the present authors [Phys. Plasmas 8, 312 (2001)]. The dependence of the peak spontaneous magnetic field on the laser intensity is discussed. It is found the ratio of the number of thermal electrons to the total number of electrons is an important parameter.

Relativistic electromagnetic penetration behavior is reexamined in the relativistic transparency region. The interaction is modeled by the relativistic hydrodynamic equations coupled with the full system of Maxwell equations, which are solved by a fully implicit energy-conserving numerical scheme. For the first time, we have studied the penetration behavior through ultra-short circularly polarized and linearly polarized laser pulses interaction with over-dense plasmas. It is shown that for the ultra-short circularly polarized laser penetration occurs through a soliton like behavior, which is quite consistent with the existing studies. However, we have found that the ultra-short linearly polarized laser penetrates through a breather like behavior, and there is an energy transition mechanism with a frequency $2\omega_0$ between the penetrated breather like structure and the background plasmas. Synchrotron radiation is strongly enhanced by the resonant excitation of surface plasma waves (SPWs). Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that energy conversion efficiency from laser to radiation in the case of SPWs excitation is about 18.7%, which is improved by more than 2 orders of magnitude compared with that of no SPWs excitation. Besides the high energy conversion efficiency, the frequency spectrum and the angular distribution of the radiation are also improved in the case of SPWs excitation because of the quasi-static magnet field induced by surface plasma waves excitation.

It is first shown from the modulation instability of the conserved Zakharov equations (ZE) that spatiotemporal chaos is formed in the different regions of the unstable wave numbers. We find that chaos sets in when two homoclinic structures are present and then many and continual homoclinic crossings occur throughout the time series. It is shown that the presence of a homoclinic structure is a potential source of both temporal chaos and spatial patterns.

The trans-2-bromotriflate of cycloherane (4) has been solvolyzed at ambient temperatures in HOAc and MeOH containing varying [Br - ] and in the presence of 0.5 M of a scavenger olefin, cyclopentene. The kinetics of solvolysis of 4 have been determined by observing the rate of change in color of an acid/base indicator that instantly responds to the production of HOTf or HBr. The kinetics show that the rate of solvolysis of 4 at constant ionic strength is independent of [Br - ]. The products of solvolysis of 4 under the various conditions have been determined by quantitative GLPC analysis. The dynamics of the ultra-intense circularly polarized solitons under inhomogeneous plasmas are examined. The interaction is modeled by the Maxwell and relativistic hydrodynamic equations and is solved with fully implicit energy-conserving numerical scheme. It is shown that a propagating weak soliton can be decreased and reflected by increasing plasma background, which is consistent with the existing studies based on hypothesis of weak density response. However it is found that ultra-intense soliton is well trapped and kept still when encountering increasing background. Stimulated Brillouin back-scattering in mixed carbon and hydrogen plasmas is studied using one-dimensional Vlasov–Maxwell simulation. It is found that both the fast and slow ion acoustic waves can scatter the incident light. Carbon ions can be trapped in the slow ion acoustic wave, and the hydrogen ions can be trapped in both the fast and slow waves. The trapped ions tend to reduce the Landau damping of the ion acoustic waves, and both the fast and slow ion acoustic waves can be excited. From the time-integrated scattering spectra, the scattering peaks of the fast and slow ion acoustic waves can be clearly distinguished.

The excitation of terahertz radiation by stimulated Raman scattering is considered. Vlasov–Maxwell numerical simulations show that powerful terahertz radiation can be produced by cascade Raman scatterings.

Thirty samples of cells from twenty-one cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) were transfected with myc and/or ras. Transformation, as assessed by growth in liquid culture and change in morphology, occurred in only one case. Colony culture in semi-solid media, however, does not occur with these cells. It would appear that the neoplastic genotype of CLL cells does not predispose the cells to readily transform, even with transfection with these two oncogenes.

The propagation of light waves in an underdense plasma is studied using one-dimensional Vlasov–Maxwell numerical simulation. It is found that the backward stimulated Raman scattering will be enhanced by electron-ion collisions. With appropriate electron-ion collision rate the Langmuir waves, driven via SRS, can be made to propagate for a long distance.

The evolution of high current electron beams in dense plasmas has been investigated by using two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations with immobile ions. It is shown that electron beams are split into many filaments at the beginning due to the Weibel instability, and then different filamentation beams attract each other and coalesce. The profile of the filaments can be described by formulas. Hammer et al. [Phys. Fluids 13, 1831 (1970)] developed a self-consistent relativistic electron beam model that allows the propagation of relativistic electron fluxes in excess of the Alfven-Lawson critical-current limit for a fully neutralized beam. The equilibrium solution has been observed in the simulation results, but the electron distribution function assumed by Hammer et al. is different from the simulation results.

The influence of self-generated magnetic and electric fields on the transport of relativistic electrons in dense plasmas was studied using a particle-in-cell simulation. For conditions relevant to the fast igniter, the laser-driven relativistic electrons may, have significant energy spread along or perpendicular to the propagation direction of the beams. The effect of electron energy spread on the growth rate. the occurrence threshold of both the Weibel-like filamentation instability and the electrostatic two-stream instability and the competition between them were investigated. The Weibel instability results in the formation of a magnetic channel, which may collimate inward fast electrons without significant deviation, and the excitation of a longitudinal electric field due to two-stream instability is destructive to the stability of the magnetic channel. The generation of relativistic electrons by the interaction of a high-intensity laser beam at the vacuum-dense plasma boundary and propagation of the electrons in the dense plasma were studied using a three-dimensional particle-in-cell code. It is shown that the electron velocity spread owing to transverse collective heating saturates the magnetic field and the longitudinal electrostatic field may play a dominant role in limiting the stable propagation of fast electrons into over-dense plasmas.

Here we report a non-toxic β-type titanium alloy exhibiting unstable elastic and plastic deformation behavior. Elastic instability leads to remarkable elastic softening, i.e., the decrease of incipient Young’s modulus with slight pre-straining. In spite of partial recovery during room-temperature aging, a stable modulus of 33GPa matching that of human bone can be maintained. Plastic instability causes highly-localized deformation which is very effective in grain refinement but contributes little to strength. We thus obtain soft nanostructured metallic materials (NMMs): The flow stress increases by only ∼5.5% as coarse grains are reduced to below 50nm, in contrast with several times increase for previously-reported NMMs.
