Abstract

An annotated catalogue of Coleoptera Curculionoidea of “Monte Grappa” Biosphere Reserve is presented. The 528 species surveyed, divided into 7 families and 283 genera and subgenera, include the 265 species already known, plus the 263 are reported for the first time for the area. Faunistic, chorological and ecological information is given for all the species together with 1.015 illustrations of distinctive species, collecting techniques and selected habitats. Abstract

Donation after circulatory death (DCD) allows expansion of the donor pool. We report on 11 years of Italian experience by comparing the outcome of grafts from DCD and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) prior to death donation (EPD), a new donor category. We studied 58 kidney recipients from DCD or EPD and collected donor/recipient clinical characteristics. Primary non function (PNF) and delayed graft function (DGF) rates, dialysis need, hospitalization duration, and patient and graft survival rates were compared. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was measured throughout the follow-up. Better clinical outcomes were achieved with EPD than with DCD despite similar graft and patient survival rates The total warm ischemia time (WIT) was longer in the DCD group than in the EPD group. Pure WIT was the highest in the class II group. The DGF rate was higher in the DCD group than in the EPD group. PNF rate was similar in the groups. Dialysis need was the greatest and hospitalization the longest in the class II DCD group. eGFR was lower in the class II DCD group than in the EPD group. Our results indicate good clinical outcomes of kidney transplants from DCD despite the long “no-touch period” and show that ECMO in the procurement phase improves graft outcome, suggesting EPD as a source for pool expansion.

Abstract

Comprehensive evidence-based guidelines for the practice of pancreas transplantation are yet to be established. The First World Consensus Conference on Pancreas Transplantation was convened for this purpose. A steering committee selected the participants and defined the questions to be addressed. A group of literature reviewers identified 597 studies to be included in summaries for guidelines production. Expert groups formulated the first draft of recommendations. Two rounds of discussion and voting occurred online, using the Delphi method (agreement rate ≥85%). After each round, critical responses of experts were reviewed, and recommendations were amended accordingly. Recommendations were finalized after live discussions. Each session was preceded by expert presentations and a summary of results of systematic literature review. Up to three voting rounds were allowed for each recommendation. To avoid potential conflicts of interest, deliberations on issues regarding the impact of pancreas transplantation on the management of diabetes were conducted by an independent jury. Recommendations on technical issues were determined by experts and validated using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II instrument. Quality of evidence was assessed using the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) methodology. Each recommendation received a GRADE rating (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations).

Abstract

The First World Consensus Conference on Pancreas Transplantation provided 49 jury deliberations regarding the impact of pancreas transplantation on the treatment of diabetic patients, and 110 experts’ recommendations for the practice of pancreas transplantation. The main message from this consensus conference is that both simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK) and pancreas transplantation alone can improve long-term patient survival, and all types of pancreas transplantation dramatically improve the quality of life of recipients. Pancreas transplantation may also improve the course of chronic complications of diabetes, depending on their severity. Therefore, the advantages of pancreas transplantation appear to clearly surpass potential disadvantages. Pancreas after kidney transplantation increases the risk of mortality only in the early period after transplantation, but is associated with improved life expectancy thereafter. Additionally, preemptive SPK, when compared to SPK performed in patients undergoing dialysis, appears to be associated with improved outcomes. Time on dialysis has negative prognostic implications in SPK recipients. Increased long-term survival, improvement in the course of diabetic complications, and amelioration of quality of life justify preferential allocation of kidney grafts to SPK recipients. Abstract

Italy was the first Western country to face the COVID-19 pandemic. Here we report the results of a national survey on kidney transplantation activity in February and March 2020, and the results of a three-round Delphi consensus promoted by four scientific societies: the Italian Society of Organ Transplantation, the Italian Society of Nephrology, the Italian Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care, and the Italian Group on Antimicrobial Stewardship. All 41 Italian transplant centers were invited to express their opinion in the Delphi rounds along with a group of seven experts. The survey revealed that, starting from March 2020, there was a decline in kidney transplantation activity in Italy, especially for living-related transplants. Overall, 60 recipients tested positive for SARS-CoV2 infection, 57 required hospitalization, 17 were admitted to the ICU, and 11 died. The online consensus had high response rates at each round (95.8%, 95.8%, and 89.5%, respectively). Eventually, 27 of 31 proposed statements were approved (87.1%), 12 at the first or second round (38.7%), and 3 at the third (9.7%). Based on the Italian experience, we discuss the reasons for the changes in kidney transplantation activity during the COVID-19 pandemic in Western countries. We also provide working recommendations for the organization and management of kidney transplantation under these conditions. 25. Mapping self-face recognition strategies in congenital prosopagnosia

Abstract

Objective: Recent evidence showed that individuals with congenital face processing impairment (congenital prosopagnosia [CP]) are highly accurate when they have to recognize their own face (self-face advantage) in an implicit matching task, with a preference for the right-half of the self-face (right perceptual bias). Yet the perceptual strategies underlying this advantage are unclear. Here, we aimed to verify whether both the self-face advantage and the right perceptual bias emerge in an explicit task, and whether those effects are linked to a different scanning strategy between the self-face and unfamiliar faces. Method: Eye movements were recorded from 7 CPs and 13 controls, during a self/other discrimination task of stimuli depicting the self-face and another unfamiliar face, presented upright and inverted. Results: Individuals with CP and controls differed significantly in how they explored faces. In particular, compared with controls, CPs used a distinct eye movement sampling strategy for processing inverted faces, by deploying significantly more fixations toward the nose and mouth areas, which resulted in more efficient recognition. Moreover, the results confirmed the presence of a self-face advantage in both groups, but the eye movement analyses failed to reveal any differences in the exploration of the self-face compared with the unfamiliar face. Finally, no bias toward the right-half of the self-face was found. Conclusions: Our data suggest that the self-face advantage emerges both in implicit and explicit recognition tasks in CPs as much as in good recognizers, and it is not linked to any specific visual exploration strategies.

27. Culture modulates the temporal dynamics of global/ local processing

Abstract

Cultural differences in the way individuals from Western Caucasian (WC) and East Asian (EA) societies perceive and attend to visual information have been consistently reported in recent years. WC observers favor and perceive most efficiently the salient local visual information by directing attention to focal objects. In contrast EA observers show a bias towards global information by preferentially attending elements in the background. However the underlying neural mechanisms and the temporal dynamics of this striking cultural contrast have yet to be clarified. The combination of Navon figures which contain both global and local features and the measurement of neural adaptation constitute an ideal way to probe this issue. We recorded the electrophysiological signals of WC and EA observers while they actively matched culturally neutral geometric Navon shapes. In each trial participants sequentially viewed and categorized an adapter shape followed by a target shape as being either: identical; global congruent; local congruent; and different . We quantified the repetition suppression a reduction in neural activity in stimulus sensitive regions following stimulus repetition using a single trial approach. A robust data driven spatio temporal analysis revealed at 80 ms a significant interaction between the culture of the observers and shape adaptation. EA observers showed sensitivity to global congruency on the attentional P1 component whereas WC observers showed discrimination for global shapes at later stages. Our data revealed an early sensitivity to global and local shape categorization which is modulated by culture. This neural tuning could underlie more complex behavioral differences observed across human populations.

29. Meeting abstract: iMap 4: An Open Source Toolbox for the Statistical Fixation Mapping of Eye Movement data with Linear Mixed Modeling

Abstract

A major challenge in modern eye movement research is to statistically map where observers are looking at, as well as isolating statistical significant differences between groups and conditions. Compared to signals of contemporary neuroscience measures, such as M/EEG and fMRI, eye movement data are sparse with much larger variations across trials and participants. As a result, the implementation of a conventional Hierarchical Linear Model approach on two-dimensional fixation distributions often returns unstable estimations and underpowered results, leaving this statistical problem unresolved. Here, we tackled this issue by using the statistical framework implemented in diverse state-of-the-art neuroimaging data processing toolboxes: Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM), Fieldtrip and LIMO EEG. We first estimated the mean individual fixation maps per condition by using trimmean to account for the sparseness and the high variations of fixation data. We then applied a univariate, pixel-wise linear mixed model (LMM) on the smoothed fixation data with each subject as a random effect, which offers the flexibility to code for multiple between- and within- subject comparisons. After this step, our approach allows to perform all the possible linear contrasts for the fixed effects (main effects, interactions, etc.). Importantly, we also introduced a novel spatial cluster test based on bootstrapping to assess the statistical significance of the linear contrasts. Finally, we validated this approach by using both experimental and computer simulation data with a Monte Carlo approach. iMap 4 is a freely available MATLAB open source toolbox for the statistical fixation mapping of eye movement data, with a user-friendly interface providing straightforward, easy to interpret statistical graphical outputs and matching the standards in robust statistical neuroimaging methods. iMap 4 represents a major step in the processing of eye movement fixation data, paving the way to a routine use of robust data-driven analyses in this important field of vision sciences. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODSdThe aim of our study was to evaluate with. magnetic resonance imaging and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) the cerebral. morphology andmetabolismof 15 ESRD plus T1Dpatients, 23 patientswith ESRD plus T1D. after KD (n = 9) and KP (n = 14) transplantation, and 8 age-matched control subjects.. However, the nature of the interaction between this critical visual biological skill and memory is yet unclear. Here, we had the unique opportunity to test two individuals who have had exceptional success in the World Memory Championships, including several world records in face-name association memory. We designed a range of face processing tasks to determine whether superior/expert face memory skills are associated with distinctive perceptual strategies for processing faces. Superior memorizers excelled at tasks involving associative face-name learning. Nevertheless, they were as impaired as controls in tasks probing the efficiency of the face system: face inversion and the other-race effect. Super memorizers did not show increased hippocampal volumes, and exhibited optimal generic eye movement strategies when they performed complex multi-item face-name associations. Our data show that the visual computations of the face system are not malleable and are robust to acquired expertise involving extensive training of associative memory.

Abstract

Emotional facial expressions are thought to have evolved because they play a crucial role in species’ survival. From infancy, humans develop dedicated neural circuits [1] to exhibit and recognize a variety of facial expressions [2]. But there is increasing evidence that culture specifies when and how certain emotions can be expressed — social norms — and that the mature perceptual mechanisms used to transmit and decode the visual information from emotional signals differ between Western and Eastern adults [3–5]. Specifically, the mouth is more informative for transmitting emotional signals in Westerners and the eye region for Easterners [4], generating culture-specific fixation biases towards these features [5]. During development, it is recognized that cultural differences can be observed at the level of emotional reactivity and regulation [6], and to the culturally dominant modes of attention [7]. Nonetheless, to our knowledge no study has explored whether culture shapes the processing of facial emotional signals early in development. The data we report here show that, by 7 months, infants from both cultures visually discriminate facial expressions of emotion by relying on culturally distinct fixation strategies, resembling those used by the adults from the environment in which they develop [5].
