Context: There is a well-established increased risk of lower-extremity (LE) musculoskeletal (MSK) injury following a sport-related concussion (SRC). Neuromuscular training programs improve biomechanics associated with LE MSK injury and reduce LE MSK injury incidence, but their relative effectiveness in athletes with history of SRC is unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate LE MSK injury incidence in female adolescent athletes with history of SRC following a neuromuscular training intervention. Design: Prospective case-control. Methods: Seventy-seven adolescent female athletes aged 12–18 years who participated in soccer, volleyball, or basketball were recruited from a single institutional sports medicine research and performance center to complete a 6-week neuromuscular training program prior to competitive athletic season. Group (Control, History of SRC) comparisons of athlete exposure and relative LE MSK injury risk and rates during the competitive athletic season were assessed. Results: Ten injuries were recorded by 9 athletes. Female athletes who reported history of SRC had increased injury risk (Risk Ratio 3.9, 95% CI, 1.1–13.8, P =.01) and increased injury rate (rate ratio 4.1, 95% CI, 1.1–15.8, P =.03) compared with female athletes without history of SRC. Conclusions: Female adolescent athletes with history of SRC showed a greater risk of LE MSK injury compared with athletes with no history of SRC. Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether psoriasis disease constitutes a risk factor for OLP, by assessing the prevalance of psoriasis in a test group with OLP and the control group without. Method and materials: A cohort of consecutive patients diagnosed clinically and histologically with OLP between 2014 and 2022 was analyzed. The results were contrasted with those obtained in control series matched for age and sex. The correlations between OLP and sex, age, tobacco, alcohol consumption, and psoriasis were assessed using Pearson chi-square test. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between psoriasis and OLP. For the assessment of the quality of the statistical models, the Akaike information criterion was used. Results: The study involved 1,016 patients; 738 women (72.6%) and 278 men (27.4%). The average age was 59.38 ± 12.55 years. Of 508 patients with OLP, 16 (3.15%) had comorbid psoriasis, and this was 5 (0.98%) in the control group. Age, sex, smoking, and alcohol habits were not predictive variables in the relationship between psoriasis and OLP in these patients. There were statistically significant differences in relation to the number of locations, with greater extension in patients with OLP and psoriasis (P = .002). According to the multivariate analysis, the odds ratio of OLP for psoriasis was 3.13 (95% CI 1.20-9.68). Conclusions: This is the first study showing the potential association between psoriasis and OLP, and the results should be considered to improve knowledge of comorbidity of OLP. The present study assessed the impact of a fixed prosthetic rehabilitation on masticatory function in patients diagnosed with stage IV periodontitis. Eligible participants were adults in need of complex rehabilitation due to masticatory dysfunction. Masticatory function was evaluated using the two‐ colored chewing gum mixing ability test (VOH) at the diagnostic phase (T0), 1 week after delivery of the prosthetic prototype (T1), and 1 week after delivery of the final prosthetic solution (T2). Ten subjects were treated with a fixed prosthesis following periodontal and implant surgery using an individualized, fully digital workflow. Full-mouth plaque and bleeding scores, pocket depth, and clinical attachment level improved significantly. VOH was 0.472 ± 0.168 at T0, 0.358 ± 0.166 at T1, and 0.250 ± 0.123 at T2. A significant improvement in VOH was observed from T0 to T1 (difference: –0.114; 95% CI: –0.199 to –0.029; P = .014) and from T1 to T2 (difference: –0.108; 95% CI: –0.200 to –0.015; P = .027). From T0 to T2, VOH increased by 44.3%. Self-perceived assessment of masticatory function also improved from T0 to T2 (P = .002). The fixed prosthetic rehabilitation in patients with stage IV periodontitis allowed for a significant improvement in objective and subjective measurements of masticatory function. Purpose: To examine whether patient-level disease diagnoses, drug treatments, and dental clinical factors are correlates of early implant failure. Materials and Methods: This historical, nested case-control study used electronic medical records to retrieve patient-level data on individuals with implant failure occurring up to 6 months after implantation, including demographics, clinical information (number, location, and complicated status of implants), underlying diseases (osteoporosis, diabetes, hypertension, inflammatory bowel disease [IBD], myocardial infarction [MI]), and drug purchases (chemotherapy, bisphosphonates, selective serotonin inhibitors, antihypertensive medications, proton pump inhibitors [PPIs], disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, corticosteroids, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) among adult members of a large, state-mandated health provider in Israel between 2015 and 2020. Individuals with implant extraction occurring up to 6 months after implantation were matched 1:1 to controls. Univariate and adjusted multivariate conditional logistic regression models were used to examine the odds ratios (ORs) of all dental implant risk factors among the patients. Results: A total of 585 individuals with implant failure (mean age, 53 years [42,62], 51.3% females and 49.7% males) were identified among 29,378 eligible patients. Compared to controls, patients who experienced implant failure (ie, cases) were more likely to have smoked in their lifetime (18% vs 11.5%, P = .009), experienced IBD (1.5% vs 0.02%, P = .059), and consumed PPIs within 6 months of the implant surgery (40.0% vs 32.5%, P = .028). Clinical factors, including the number of implants per person (individuals with two implants, OR = 1.53; individuals with at least four implants, OR = 3.33; P < .01), location of implant (maxilla; OR = 1.59; 95% CI: 1.2-2.04), and smoking (OR = 1.57; 95% CI: 1.09-2.26) were significant correlates of early implant failure among the included cases. Crohn's disease, MI, and osteoporosis were found to be borderline significant correlates of early dental implant failure. Conclusions: Among the factors examined, the number of implants, the location of implants, and smoking history were significant correlates of early implant failure, while Crohn's disease, MI, and osteoporosis were found to not be significant. Context: Laboratorial 3-dimensional kinematic analyses have shown changes in the single-leg squat's (SLS) pattern of patients with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). However, it is unknown whether clinicians are able to detect these changes using 2-dimensional kinematics. Objective: To compare the frontal plane 2-dimensional kinematics of patients with FAIS and asymptomatic individuals in the SLS test performed in a clinical setting. Design: Case-control study. Setting: Physical therapy clinic. Participants: Twenty men with bilateral FAIS and 20 asymptomatic men. Main Outcome Measures: Two-dimensional kinematic analysis was collected in the frontal plane during the execution of the SLS test. The outcomes were squat depth, pelvic drop (pelvis angle relative to the horizontal plane), hip adduction (femur angle relative to the pelvis), and knee valgus (femur angle relative to the tibia). Results: Most and least painful limbs of patients with FAIS had squat depth (9.8% [2.9%] and 9.5% [3.1%] of height), pelvic drop (4.2° [3.9°] and 3.7° [4.2°]), hip adduction (74.9° [5.8°] and 75.9° [5.7°]), and knee valgus (4.0° [11.0°] and 5.0° [9.9°]) similar to asymptomatic individuals (9.0% [2.3%], 4.8° [2.6°], 73.7° [4.9°], and −1.7° [8.5°]; P >.05 for all). Conclusion: The frontal plane 2-dimensional kinematic analysis of the SLS test in the clinical setting is not able to distinguish patients with FAIS from asymptomatic individuals. Context: Aberrant movement patterns among individuals with concussion history have been reported during sport-related movement. However, the acute postconcussion kinematic and kinetic biomechanical movement patterns during a rapid acceleration–deceleration task have not been profiled and leaves their progressive trajectory unknown. Our study aimed to examine single-leg hop stabilization kinematics and kinetics between concussed and healthy-matched controls acutely (≤7 d) and when asymptomatic (≤72 h of symptom resolution). Design: Prospective, cohort laboratory study. Methods: Ten concussed (60% male; 19.2 [0.9] y; 178.7 [14.0] cm; 71.3 [18.0] kg) and 10 matched controls (60% male; 19.5 [1.2] y; 176.1 [12.6] cm; 71.0 [17.0] kg) completed the single-leg hop stabilization task under single and dual task (subtracting by 6's or 7's) at both time points. Participants stood on a 30-cm tall box set 50% of their height behind force plates while in an athletic stance. A synchronized light was illuminated randomly, queuing participants to initiate the movement as rapidly as possible. Participants then jumped forward, landed on their nondominant leg, and were instructed to reach and maintain stabilization as fast as possible upon ground contact. We used 2 (group) × 2 (time) mixed-model analyses of variance to compare single-leg hop stabilization outcomes separately during single and dual task. Results: We observed a significant main group effect for single-task ankle plantarflexion moment, with greater normalized torque (mean difference = 0.03 N·m/body weight; P =.048, g = 1.18) for concussed individuals across time points. A significant interaction effect for single-task reaction time indicated that concussed individuals had slower performance acutely relative to asymptomatic (mean difference = 0.09 s; P =.015, g = 0.64), while control group performance was stable. No other main or interaction effects for single-leg hop stabilization task metrics were present during single and dual task (P ≥.051). Conclusions: Greater ankle plantarflexion torque coupled with slower reaction time may indicate stiff, conservative single-leg hop stabilization performance acutely following concussion. Our findings shed preliminary light on the recovery trajectories of biomechanical alterations following concussion and provide specific kinematic and kinetic focal points for future research. Background: Preterm birth (PTB) is the main condition related to perinatal morbimortality worldwide. The aim of this study was to determine the indirect effects of neighbourhood socioeconomic status (NSES) on the risk of spontaneous PTB. Methods: We carried out a retrospective case-control study including sociodemographic and obstetric data of multigravid women who gave birth at a maternity hospital in Tucumán, Argentina, between 2005 and 2010: 949 women without previous PTB nor pregnancy loss who delivered at term and 552 who had spontaneous PTB. NSES was estimated from the Unsatisfied Basic Needs index of census data. Variables selected through penalised regressions were used to create a data-driven Bayesian network; then, pathways were identified and mediation analyses performed. Results: Maternal age less than 20 years mediated part of the protective effect of high NSES on spontaneous PTB [natural indirect effect (NIE) -0.0125, 95% confidence interval (CI) (-0.0208, -0.0041)] and on few prenatal visits (< 5) [NIE − 0.0095, 95% CI (-0.0166, -0.0025)]. These pathways showed greater sensitivity to unobserved confounders that affect the variables mediator-outcome in the same direction, and exposure-mediator in the opposite direction. They did not show sensitivity to observed potential confounders, nor to the parameterization used to define NSES. Meanwhile, urinary tract infections showed a trend in mediating the effect of low NSES on spontaneous PTB [NIE 0.0044, 95% CI (-0.0006, 0.0093), P 0.0834]. Conclusions: High NSES has protective indirect effects on spontaneous PTB risk, mainly associated with a lower frequency of teenage pregnancy. Significance: Few studies have empirically investigated pathways between neighbourhood socioeconomic status (NSES) and specific individual-level traits on spontaneous preterm birth, especially in Latin American populations. Objective: To examine cerebral functional alterations associated with sensory processing in patients with migraine and constant photophobia. Background: Migraine is a common headache disorder that presents with photophobia in many patients during attacks. Furthermore, some patients with migraine experience constant photophobia, even during headache‐free intervals, leading to a compromised quality of life. Methods: This prospective, case–control study included 40 patients with migraine (18 male and 22 female) who were recruited at an eye hospital and eye clinic. The patients were divided into two groups: migraine with photophobia group, consisting of 22 patients (10 male and 12 female) with constant photophobia, and migraine without photophobia group, consisting of 18 patients (eight male and 10 female) without constant photophobia. We used 18F‐fluorodeoxyglucose and positron emission tomography to compare cerebral glucose metabolism between the two patient groups and 42 healthy participants (16 men and 26 women). Results: Compared with the healthy group, both the migraine with photophobia and migraine without photophobia groups showed cerebral glucose hypermetabolism in the bilateral thalamus (p < 0.05, family‐wise error‐corrected). Moreover, the contrast of migraine with photophobia minus migraine without photophobia patients showed glucose hypermetabolism in the bilateral medial thalamus (p < 0.05, family‐wise error‐corrected). Conclusions: The medial thalamus may be associated with the development of continuous photophobia in patients with migraine. The aim of this study was to assess factors associated with higher odds of undergoing repeat general anesthesia (GA2) for dental treatments. The authors studied children up to age 48 months of age enrolled in Medicaid who underwent dental treatment under first general anesthesia (GA1). The authors used a case-control design to compare children who had a GA2 within 48 months of GA1 (case patients) with those who did not (control patients). In total, 60 case patients were age and sex matched to 120 control patients. Mean (SD) age at GA1 was 38 (5.2) months for case participants and 40 (4.7) months for control participants (P =.08). Higher caries involvement of maxillary incisors (P =.04), and lower caries involvment of canines (P =.003), first molars (P =.012), and second molars (P <.001) at GA1 was associated with higher odds of occurrence of GA2. There was a significant inverse association between full-coverage restoration on canines (P =.003), first molars (P =.001), and second molars (P =.002) at GA1 and occurrence of GA2. There was a significant direct association between the use of composites or sealants on second molars in GA1 and occurrence of GA2 (P =.02). The number of extractions at GA1 was not associated significantly with the occurrence of GA2. The use of full-coverage restorations on primary molars and canines under general anesthesia (GA) was associated with lower odds of occurrence of GA2. Resin restorations and sealants on primary second molars were associated with higher odds of occurrence repeat GA. The findings support preferential use of full-coverage restorations for young children undergoing dental GA. In this case-control study, the authors examined the relationship between untreated caries in children and parent fluoride treatment refusal. The authors hypothesized that parents of children with a history of untreated caries would be less likely to refuse topical fluoride for their children than parents of children with no history of untreated caries. The study included children (≤ 18 years old) who were patients at a university dental clinic from January 2016 through June 2020. Children whose parents refused fluoride treatment were age-matched with children whose parents did not refuse fluoride treatment (n = 356). The outcome variable was parent topical fluoride refusal for their children (no, yes). The predictor variable was a history of untreated caries (no, yes). Confounding variable–adjusted modified Poisson regression models were used to estimate the prevalence ratio of parent fluoride refusal by means of children's untreated caries status. Approximately 46.3% of children had a history of untreated caries. The prevalence of parent fluoride refusal for children with a history of untreated caries was significantly lower than that for children with no history of untreated caries (adjusted prevalence ratio, 0.79; 95% CI, 0.64 to 0.98; P =.03). Parents of children with a history of caries are less likely to refuse topical fluoride treatment, which suggests that untreated caries may motivate parents to accept preventive dental treatments like fluoride. It has been hypothesized that air pollution can increase an individual's susceptibility to COVID-19. Our study sought to investigate if short-term exposure to a high average level of Air Quality Index (AQI), ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are risk factors for death from COVID-19. We conducted an unmatched case-control study to compare the risk of mortality among reported COVID-19 cases within metropolitan statistical areas in Indiana from March 31, 2020, to December 31, 2020 (N = 53,459). Air pollution concentration data at the county level were retrieved from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Pollutant concentrations for the 90 days before disease development were averaged. Data were analyzed using stepwise logistic regression accounting for median air temperature, race, ethnicity, and preexisting conditions as confounders. At the population level, individuals who were exposed to a greater average of PM2.5 in the 90 days before the development of COVID-19 had an increased risk of death: OR = 2.16, 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.12, 18.57]. Individuals with chronic lung disease had an increased risk of death in relation to PM10: OR = 2.72, 95% CI [1.15, 6.43]. Objectives: Noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) are multifactorial and can be caused by the anatomical structure of the teeth, erosion, abrasion and abnormal occlusion. The aim of this case–control study was to explore the risk factors for NCCLs. Methods: Cone‐beam computed tomography was used to determine whether a wedge‐shaped defect existed at the cementoenamel junction. We compared 63 participants with NCCLs with 63 controls without NCCLs, matched for sex, age (±1 year) and toothbrushing‐related factors (e.g., type of bristle and brushing patterns, frequency and strength). All participants were asked to complete a questionnaire about self‐administered daily diet habits and health condition. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the risk factors for NCCLs. Results: Significant variables in the univariate analysis (i.e., p <.2) included frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, sella‐nasion‐point B angle (SNB) and Frankfort‐mandibular plane angle (FMA). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that the consumption frequency of carbonated beverages (odds ratio [OR] = 3.147; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.039–9.532), FMA (OR = 1.100; 95% CI, 1.004–1.204) and SNB (OR = 0.896; 95% CI, 0.813–0.988) was independent influencing factors. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) value of regression Model 1 (established with the frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, FMA, SNB and sleep bruxism) was 0.700 (95% CI, 0.607–0.792; p <.001), and that of regression Model 2 (established using the frequency of carbonated beverage consumption, FMA and SNB) was 0.704 (95% CI, 0.612–0.796; p <.001). Conclusions: The consumption frequency of carbonated beverages and FMA was risk factors for NCCLs; the higher the frequency of carbonated beverage consumption and FMA, the higher was the probability of NCCLs. SNB was a protective factor for NCCL occurrence; the larger the SNB, the lower was the probability of NCCL occurrence. These findings have further clarified the aetiology of NCCLs and provided clinicians with valuable insights into strategies for preventing the loss of dental tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To explore the levels of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in patients with periodontitis and examine their effects on keratinization, barrier function of human gingival keratinocytes (HGKs) and the associated mechanisms. Materials and Methods: Saliva, gingival crevicular fluid (GCF), clinical periodontal parameters and gingival specimens were collected from 10 healthy control subjects and 10 patients with stage II–IV periodontitis to measure the NET levels. Subsequently, mRNA and protein levels of keratinization and barrier indicators, as well as intracellular calcium and epithelial barrier permeability, were analysed in HGKs after NET stimulation. Results: The study showed that NET levels significantly elevated in patients with periodontitis, across multiple specimens including saliva, GCF and gingival tissues. Stimulation of HGKs with NETs resulted in a decrease in the expressions of involucrin, cytokeratin 10, zonula occludens 1 and E‐cadherin, along with decreased intracellular calcium levels and increased epithelial barrier permeability. Furthermore, the inhibition of keratinization by NETs is ERK‐KLF4‐dependent. Conclusions: This study indicates that NETs impair the barrier function of HGKs and suppress keratinization through ERK/KLF4 axis. Pediatric posterior fossa tumor (PFT) survivors experience long-term cognitive sequelae, including memory disorders, for which irradiation is one of the main risk factors. The aims of the present study were to (1) explore the profile of impairment in episodic, semantic, working and procedural memory systems in irradiated versus nonirradiated PFT survivors, and (2) test whether an autobiographical questionnaire and a two-phase ecological test (Epireal) assessing episodic memory are more sensitive to radiation-induced hippocampal damage than commonly used tests. A total of 60 participants (22 irradiated PFT survivors, 17 nonirradiated PFT survivors, and 21 controls) were included in the prospective IMPALA study. They all underwent a broad battery of tests assessing the different memory systems in two 2-day sessions 3 weeks apart. We performed between-groups comparisons and analyzed impairment profiles, using -1.65 SD s as a cut-off. For irradiated patients, correlations were calculated between mean radiation doses to key brain structures involved in memory (hippocampus, cerebellum, and striatum) and corresponding memory scores. PBT survivors performed significantly more poorly than controls (p < 0.001) on conventional tests of episodic, semantic and working memory: 64% of irradiated patients and 35% of nonirradiated patients had a deficit in at least two memory systems, with episodic memory impairment being more specific to the irradiated group. Epireal had a larger effect size than the other episodic memory tests, allowing us to detect deficits in a further 18% of irradiated patients. These deficits were correlated with the mean radiation dose to the left hippocampus. Memory impairment is a frequent long-term cognitive sequela in PFT survivors, especially after radiation therapy. New ecological tests of episodic memory that are more sensitive to radiation-induced deficits than conventional tests could yield specific markers of the toxicity of medial temporal lobe irradiation. • 86% of irradiated patients had a deficit in at least one memory system. • 65% of nonirradiated patients had a deficit in at least one memory system. • Episodic memory was specifically impaired in irradiated patients. • Episodic tests were more sensitive to radiation toxicity on the left hippocampus. Psoriasis (PsO) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, often accompanied by psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and linked to various comorbidities and increased mortality rates. This study aimed to explore the relationship between PsO and accelerated biological aging, specifically focusing on epigenetic DNA methylation clocks. Using a matched case-control design, 20 PsO cases were selected along with age, race, and sex-matched 20 controls without PsO from the Skin Disease Biorepository at Brown Dermatology, Inc, Providence, Rhode Island. Blood samples retrieved from both groups were analyzed for DNA methylation, and epigenetic ages were calculated using DNA methylation clocks, including Horvath, Hannum, Pheno, SkinBlood, and Grim ages. Generalized estimation equations were employed to test the differences in epigenetic and chronological ages between PsO cases and controls, as well as within various subgroups in comparison to their respective controls. There were no statistically significant differences in epigenetic ages between PsO cases and controls. However, notably, PsO cases with PsA demonstrated an accelerated PhenoAge, compared to their matched controls. This study represents a pioneering investigation into the potential link between PsO and epigenetic aging, shedding light on the possibility of accelerated epigenetic aging in PsA, possibly associated with heightened inflammatory burden. These findings emphasize the systemic impact of PsA on the aging process, prompting the need for deeper exploration into autoimmune pathways, inflammation, and epigenetic modifications underlying PsO pathogenesis and aging mechanisms. Larger-scale studies with diverse populations are imperative to discern PsO subgroups experiencing accelerated biological aging and decipher the intricate interplay between PsO, inflammation, and aging pathways. Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) with its etiology not yet fully understood. Interleukin (IL)-35 is an inhibitory cytokine that belongs to the IL-12 family. Elevated IL-35 in the plasma and the tumor microenvironment increases tumorigenesis and indicates poor prognosis in different types of malignancies. The objective of this study is to estimate the expression levels of IL-35 in tissue and serum of MF patients versus healthy controls. This case-control study included 35 patients with patch, plaque, and tumor MF as well as 30 healthy controls. Patients were fully assessed, and serum samples and lesional skin biopsies were taken prior to starting treatment. The IL-35 levels were measured in both serum and tissue biopsies by ELISA technique. Both tissue and serum IL-35 levels were significantly higher in MF patients than in controls (P < 0.001) and tissue IL-35 was significantly higher than serum IL-35 in MF patients (P < 0.001). Tissue IL-35 was significantly higher in female patients and patients with recurrent MF compared to male patients and those without recurrent disease (P < 0.001). Since both tissue and serum IL-35 levels are increased in MF, IL-35 is suggested to have a possible role in MF pathogenesis. IL-35 can be a useful diagnostic marker for MF. With increasing survivorship following cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs), more patients with a history of CVA are undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of prior CVA on the perioperative outcomes following TSA. The Nationwide Readmissions Database was queried from 2010 to 2019 to identify all patients with a history of CVA undergoing TSA. Eight hundred seventeen cases were identified and case matched on a 1:2 ratio for age, sex, obesity status, and year of procedure. Patient demographic characteristics were collected and analyzed for differences between the 2 groups. Data on length of stay, 180-day complications, 180-day readmissions, and 180-day mortality were collected and analyzed for differences between the 2 groups. Eight hundred seventeen cases of patients with a history of CVA were matched with 1634 patients without a history of CVA undergoing TSA. The average age was 71. Fifty six percent of patients were female, and 23% of patients were obese. Patients with CVA had higher incidence of tobacco use (P <.001), deficiency anemia (P <.001), electrolyte disorders (P <.001), paralysis (P <.001), coagulopathy (P <.001), heart valve disorders (P <.001), history of myocardial infarction (P <.001), and higher rates of chronic diseases, such as hypertension (P <.001), diabetes (P <.001), liver disease (P <.001), congestive heart failure (P <.001), renal failure (P <.001), and peripheral vascular disease (P <.001). Patients with a history of CVA had higher rates of complications, readmissions, and revisions within 180 days (P <.001). One hundred eighty–day mortality was similar between the 2 groups. The average length of stay was 3.2 days in patients with a history of CVA compared to 1.4 days in those without a history of CVA (P <.001). Patients with a history of CVA have a higher rate of medical comorbidities than those without. Background: Preeclampsia is a life-threatening multisystem disorder of pregnancy which has been observed in 2%–10% of pregnancies. The prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency ranges from 15% to 80%. Deficiency of Vitamin D is associated with the development of preeclampsia. This study was done to find out the prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency among preeclamptic/eclamptic and normal pregnant females, to establish Vitamin D deficiency as a causal factor of preeclampsia, and to elucidate the relation between 25 (OH) Vitamin D status and the severe preeclampsia. Materials and Methods: Blood samples were collected from 50 normotensives (controls) and 50 hypertensive pregnant females with preeclampsia/eclampsia (cases), and 25 (OH) Vitamin D level was measured by chemiluminescence Immunoassay. Results: Among the preeclamptic/eclamptic group, 32 (64%) were noted with Vitamin D deficiency and 18 (36%) with Vitamin D insufficiency. In the control group, 30 (60%) pregnant women showed Vitamin D deficiency, 19 (38%) with Vitamin D insufficiency, and a sufficient level of Vitamin D was observed in one woman (2%). Conclusion: Although it is difficult to demonstrate the correlation between Vitamin D levels and preeclampsia, there is a widespread global prevalence of Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy. Background: The aetiology of Sleep bruxism includes specific personality traits, related to perfectionism. Aim: To investigate the relationship between probable sleep bruxism (PSB) and personality traits in children and their parents, determining whether children with PSB and their parents are more perfectionists. Design: This case–control study included 104 children aged 8–9 years, 52 cases and 52 controls. A clinical examination was performed on the children who completed the Big Five Personality Questionnaire (BFQ‐NA) and the Child Perfectionism Inventory. Parents completed a bruxism diagnostic questionnaire according to the AASM criteria, BFQ and Frost multidimensional perfectionism scale questionnaires. t‐Tests for independent samples and multivariate logistic regression models were used for statistical analysis. Results: A significant relationship between PSB and a self‐demanding personality (OR = 1.11, p =.01), restless sleep (OR = 4.41, p =.004), and a family history of clenching and grinding teeth (OR = 3.07, p =.0006) was found in a binary logistic regression model. When adjusted, only restless sleep showed a significant relationship with PSB (p =.03, OR 3.32, 95% CI 1.13–9.81). Conclusion: Children whose parents reported as clenching or grinding their teeth while asleep in the previous 6 months, and who were found to have abnormal dental wear, had significantly more nightmares, sleep disruption, daytime sleepiness, family history of bruxism, and tended to be more perfectionist. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common movement disorder and the second most common neurodegenerative disease. The aim of our study was to compare gray–white matter changes (GWC) between Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and age-matched healthy control group as well as comparing GWC between different stages of PD (early and complicated). Our study was prospective cross-sectional case–control observational study with analytic component conducted on twenty patients and ten controls without any signs or symptoms of PD or any history of PD in first-degree relatives. All patients and controls were tested for history taking with stress on resting tremors, rigidity, gait abnormalities, postural instability and any symptoms of cognitive impairment, clinical examination including general examination and neurological examination. Also diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) with fiber tracking (tractography) and susceptibility-weighted MR imaging were performed for all cases. Results: As regards DTI and evaluation of fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) values between PD cases and healthy controls, the cases group showed significant decrease in FA values at substantia nigra on both sides and left cingulum as well as significant increase in MD values at substantia nigra on both sides and corpus callosum. Also, there are significant decrease in FA values at substantia nigra on both sides and significant increase in MD values at substantia nigra on both sides and right cingulum in late parkinsonism when compared to early parkinsonism. A cutoff FA value of 0.945 at right substantia nigra and cutoff FA value of 0.585 at left substantia nigra showed significant AUC that could differentiate between cases and controls. Also cutoff MD value of 0.791 at right substantia nigra and cutoff MD value of 0.813 at left substantia nigra showed significant AUC that could differentiate between cases and controls. Conclusions: Diffusion tensor imaging showed valuable role in evaluation of gray–white matter changes in Parkinson's disease. Also, it helps to assess degree of gray–white matter changes when comparing late parkinsonism to early parkinsonism through evaluation of FA and MD values at corpus callosum, substania nigra, and cingulum. Background: Periodontitis is the sixth-most common disease worldwide. The oral microbiome composition and its association with Periodontal disease (PD) have been largely explored; however, limited studies have explored the microbial profiles of both oral and toothbrushes in patients with PD. Thus, this study aimed to ascertain the oral and toothbrushes microbial composition in high-altitude populations, hypothesizing that their correlation with periodontal health would differ from those at lower altitudes, potentially indicating links between environmental factors, microbial colonization patterns, and periodontal health in distinct geographic contexts. Methods: In the present study, we enrolled 35 individuals including 21 healthy and 14 diagnosed with PD from the Lhasa region of Tibet, China. Saliva and toothbrush samples were collected from each participant to assess the association between toothbrush usage and oral microbiome with PD using 16 S rRNA gene-specific V3-V4 regions sequencing. To assess the oral and toothbrush microbiome composition and diversity and its possible link to PD. Results: Significantly higher Alpha diversity (Shannon index) was observed between the PD group and PD toothbrushes (p = 0.00021) and between the PD group and Healthy toothbrushes (p = 0.00041). The predominant species were Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Fusobacteria, with genera Pseudomonas, Veillonella, Neisseria, Acinetobacter, and Haemophilus. In addition, PICRUST2 analysis unveiled 44 significant pathways differentiating the disease and healthy groups, along with 29 pathways showing significant differences between their respective toothbrush microbial profiles. The distinct oral and toothbrush microbial composition among high-altitude populations suggests potential adaptations to the challenges of high-altitude environments. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of tailored dental care strategies, accounting for altitude and racial factors, to effectively manage periodontal health in these communities. Background: Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neurodegenerative disorder. Although prior studies have investigated the metabolomes of SMA in various contexts, there is a gap in research on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolomics compared to healthy controls. CSF metabolomics can provide insights into central nervous system function and patient outcomes. This study aims to investigate CSF metabolite profiles in untreated SMA patients to enhance our understanding of SMA metabolic dysregulation. Methods: This case control study included 15 SMA patients and 14 control subjects. CSF samples were collected, and untargeted metabolomics was conducted to detect metabolites in SMA and control groups. Results: A total of 118 metabolites abundance were significantly changed between the SMA and control groups. Of those, 27 metabolites with variable importance for the projection (VIP) ≥ 1.5 were identified. The top 5 differential metabolites were N-acetylneuraminic acid (VIP = 2.38, Fold change = 0.43, P = 5.49 × 10–5), 2,3-dihydroxyindole (VIP = 2.33, Fold change = 0.39, P = 1.81 × 10–4), lumichrome (VIP = 2.30, Fold change = 0.48, P = 7.90 × 10–5), arachidic acid (VIP = 2.23, Fold change = 10.79, P = 6.50 × 10–6), and 10-hydroxydecanoic acid (VIP = 2.23, Fold change = 0.60, P = 1.44 × 10–4). Cluster analysis demonstrated that the differentially metabolites predominantly clustered within two main categories: protein and amino acid metabolism, and lipid metabolism. Conclusions: The findings highlight the complexity of SMA, with widespread effects on multiple metabolic pathways, particularly in amino acid and lipid metabolism. N-acetylneuraminic acid may be a potential treatment for functional improvement in SMA. Few studies have focused on the risk factors for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in small for gestational age (SGA) infants. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors for NEC in SGA newborns. This study included consecutive SGA neonates admitted to a tertiary hospital in Jiangxi Province, China from Jan 2008 to Dec 2022. Patients with NEC (Bell's stage ≥ II) were assigned to the NEC group. Gestational age- and birth weight-matched non-NEC infants born during the same period at the same hospital were assigned to the control group. The risk factors associated with NEC were analyzed with univariate and logistic regression models. During the study period, 2,912 SGA infants were enrolled, 150 (5.15%) of whom developed NEC. In total, 143 patients and 143 controls were included in the NEC and control groups, respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed that sepsis (OR 2.399, 95% CI 1.271–4.527, P = 0.007) and anemia (OR 2.214, 95% CI 1.166–4.204, P = 0.015) might increase the incidence of NEC in SGA infants and that prophylactic administration of probiotics (OR 0.492, 95% CI 0.303–0.799, P = 0.004) was a protective factor against NEC. Background: Regional evidence on the role of vitamin D in the prevention of COVID-19 and its sequalae remains inconclusive and sparse. Objective: This study aimed to determine the association of COVID-19 status and severity with vitamin D among adults in Colombo District, Sri Lanka. Methods: A sex-matched case–control study was conducted among 104 RT-PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients recruited from two major hospitals designated as COVID-19 treating centres and 104 RT-PCR negative adults recruited from the catchment area of the two hospitals. Non-fasting blood samples obtained from cases upon hospital admission and from controls upon release from 14-day quarantine period were analysed for serum 25(OH)D using chemiluminescence assay. Serum level < 50.0 nmol/L was identified as vitamin D deficiency (VDD). Results: Cases were older while the controls had fewer persons with co-morbidities. Cases (median = 30.0; IQR = 21.2 nmol/L) had significantly lower 25(OH)D compared to controls (median = 35.9; IQR = 28.3 nmol/L) (p = 0.02), which persisted after adjustments (p = 0.026), along with Sinhalese ethnicity (p < 0.001). VDD was significantly more prevalent in cases (83.7% vs. 71.2%; crude odds ratio (OR) = 2.1; 95% CI 1.1, 4.1); but was not an independent predictor of COVID-19 status (adjusted OR = 1.9; 95% CI 0.6, 5.7). A lower 25(OH)D level was observed in moderate/severe cases (median = 28.0; IQR = 20.4 nmol/L) vs. mild (median = 39.8; IQR = 19.0 nmol/L), however, neither low serum concentrations nor deficiency showed an independent relationship with severity (p > 0.05). Diabetes was the sole predictor of COVID-19 severity (p = 0.022). Conclusions: Vitamin D has potential as a primary preventive strategy in preventing COVID-19 like infections, but not as a secondary preventive strategy to reduce its severity. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most prevalent endocrinopathies among young women. Ultrasound evidence of polycystic ovaries is one of its crucial diagnostic criteria. Objectives: Our main objective is to study the contribution of ultrasound data in diagnosing PCOS. In addition, we aim to establish a new cutoff point for the use of ultrasound and to determine its sensitivity as well as its specificity. Design: It was a prospective study, including all patients presenting with clinical hyperandrogenism. Methods: The ultrasound examination of these patients was performed using a novel ultrasound machine (18 MHz) compared to an older ultrasound machine (2 Hz–8 MHz). Inclusion criteria encompassed adult female patients over 18 years presenting symptoms suggestive of PCOS, particularly hyperandrogenism and oligo-anovulation, meeting Rotterdam's diagnostic criteria. Prior to inclusion, assessments were conducted to eliminate other potential causes explaining hyperandrogenism or menstrual disorders in both groups. Results: We examined 92 patients diagnosed with PCOS. Menstrual disorders were the main symptoms, with amenorrhea being more frequent in the PCOS group (G1) (48.9% vs the control group (G2): 11.1%). The follicle number was significantly lower in the control group, as assessed by both ultrasound machines (p < 10−3). The accuracy of the new ultrasound device was evaluated compared to the old one using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, revealing a cutoff of 18 follicles (sensitivity of 68.1%, specificity of 100%) and an area under the curve of 0.955. We found a significant difference between the median values of the number of follicles (NF) by both ultrasound machines (18 vs 12). It was positively correlated with an index of r = 0.916. For the volume, it was distinctively higher in G1 (p < 10−3). ROC curve analysis revealed an ovarian volume cutoff of 9.25 ml with a sensitivity of 48.9% and a specificity of 100%. Both ultrasound machines were positively correlated with an index of r = 0.979 (p < 10−3). Conclusion: In conclusion, we were able to establish significant correlations between the new and the old ultrasound devices for both the NF and ovarian volume. Our study is distinctive as it represents the first on the African continent to re-evaluate the ultrasound criterion for PCOS. Background: A well-recognized connection was found between oxidative stress and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Since autoimmune illness, as RA is typified by persistent systemic inflammation, oxidative stress indicators offer a promising extra option for evaluating the activity and prognosis of RA. Aim: To assess serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level as a marker of oxidative stress in RA patients concerning disease activity. Results: This case–control study revealed a statistically significant increase among the patient group than the control group regarding serum MDA. MDA positively correlated with ESR, CRP, DAS-28 score, and morning stiffness. The optimal cut-off point of serum MDA recognized patient group was > 16.21 nmol/ml with a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 100.0%. Background: Migraine disease is a chronic headache disorder characterized by recurrent attacks. Migraine and vestibular disorders are common associations. The exact pathophysiology is still unknown. Objectives: To study the results of vHIT and VNG in dizzy migraineurs. Methods: This is a case-control study that included 140 subjects 70 of them were migraine patients with vestibular symptoms, while the other 70 were a control group of healthy subjects matched in age. A full history with pure tone audiometry and tympanogram for hearing evaluation was done for both groups then videonystagmography and the video head impulse tests were done. Results: The vHIT results showed that there were no significant differences among control and study groups regarding the VOR gain and gain asymmetry with no corrective saccades recorded in patients or control groups that denote the VOR is intact. The VNG test revealed in OPK and saccade tests that there was a significant difference between the control and the study groups. A positive weak correlation between vHIT and caloric test results in the left lateral and posterior canal gain in the study group. Objective: Patients with mild oral and maxillofacial space infection (OMSI) usually need only antimicrobial therapy. However, surgical intervention is eventually needed after using antibiotics for a period. The objective of this study was to explore the risk factors for drug therapy failure in OMSI. Subjects and methods: A retrospective case‒control study was designed. From August 2020 to September 2022, patients at Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Ninth People's Hospital who were diagnosed with OMSI were retrospectively reviewed. The outcome variable was surgical intervention after the use of antibiotics. We collected common biological factors, including demographic characteristics, routine blood test results, C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and composite indicators, such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR). The χ2 test and binary logistic regression were used to examine the association between biological factors and the outcome variable. Results: Forty-six patients were included in this study. Further surgical intervention was needed in 20 patients (43.5%). The NLR showed a significant association with further surgical drainage (p = 0.01). A binary logistic regression equation was found by using stepwise regression based on the Akaike information criterion (R2 = 0.443), which was associated with sex (odds ratio [OR], 0.216; p = 0.092), NLR (OR, 1.258; p = 0.045), red blood cell (RBC) count (OR, 4.372; p = 0.103) and monocyte (MONO) count (OR, 9.528, p = 0.023). Receiver operating characteristic analysis produced an area under the curve for NLR of 0.725 (p = 0.01) and for the binary logistic regression model of 0.8365 (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Surgical interventions are needed in some mild OMSI patients when antimicrobial therapy fails to stop the formation of abscesses. The binary logistic regression model shows that NLR can be used as an ideal prognostic factor to predict the outcome of antimicrobial therapy and the possibility of requiring surgical intervention. Statement of clinical relevance: Using simple, inexpensive, and easily achieved biological parameters (such as routine blood test results) and composite indicators calculated by them (such as NLR) to predict whether surgical intervention is needed in the future provides a reference for clinical doctors and enables more cost-effective and efficient diagnosis and treatment. Laser hair removal (LHR) has been established as a safe and efficient method for eliminating unwanted hair. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of LHR complications and assess the contributing factors. During one year, 16,900 patients undergoing LHR therapy were evaluated for complications. For each case, two external controls were selected (matched based on age, sex, Fitzpatrick skin type (FST) III-IV, and the treated anatomical region). To assess the impact of anatomical region on complication occurrence, each patient was used as their internal control if another area was treated during the same session. GEE analysis was used for statistical analysis. The incidence of LHR complications was calculated to be 0.69%. The most common complications were petechia, purpura, and ecchymosis (31.66%) followed by pigmentation changes (20.0%). LHR complications were most commonly observed in the lower limbs (32.0%), face and neck (23.3%), and genitalia and thighs (22.3%), respectively. Possible risk factors were younger age (OR = 0.74, P-value ≤ 0.001), operating LHR in the head and neck (OR = 5.8, P-value = 0.022), utilization of the alexandrite laser (OR = 2.32, P-value = 0.011), and fluence in the Alexandrite laser (OR = 3.47, P-value = 0.003). Overall, the results of this study indicate that LHR is generally a safe method for removing unwanted hair. However, factors such as younger age, treatment of the facial area, and use of the alexandrite laser especially with higher fluence levels in patients with FST III-IV were identified as potential risk factors. Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are the second leading causes of maternal mortality and morbidity. It also results in high perinatal mortality and morbidity. Since eclampsia is preceded by preeclampsia and shows the progression of the disease, they share the same pathogenesis and determining factors. The purpose of this study was to determine determinants of preeclampsia, since it is essential for its prevention and/or its associated consequences. An unmatched case–control study was conducted from September 1–30, 2023 among women who gave birth from June 1, 2020, to August 31, 2023, at Hiwot Fana Comprehensive Specialized University Hospital. Women who had preeclampsia were considered cases, while those without were controls. The sample size was calculated using EPI Info version 7 for a case–control study using the following assumptions: 95% confidence interval, power of 80%, case-to-control ratio of 1:2, and 5% non-response rate were 305. Data was collected using Google Form, and analyzed using SPSS version 26. Variables that had a p-value of < 0.05 on multivariable logistic regression were considered statistically significant, and their association was explained using an odds ratio at a 95% confidence interval. A total of 300 women (100 cases and 200 controls) with a mean age of 24.4 years were included in the study. Rural residence (AOR 2.04, 95% CI 1.10–3.76), age less than 20 years (AOR 3.04, 95% CI 1.58–5.85), history of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (AOR 5.52, 95% CI 1.76–17.33), and no antenatal care (AOR 2.38, 95% CI 1.19–4.75) were found to be the determinants of preeclampsia. We found that living in a rural areas, previous history of preeclampsia, no antenatal care, and < 20 years of age were significantly associated with preeclampsia. A whiplash injury can alter neck muscle function, which remains years after the injury and may explain why symptoms such as persistent pain and disability occur. There is currently limited knowledge about dynamic neck muscle function in chronic whiplash-associated disorders (WAD), and about the extent to which altered muscle function can improve after rehabilitation. Ultrasound can detect mechanical neck muscle function by measuring real-time deformation and deformation rate in the muscles. This method was used for five dorsal neck muscles in participants with chronic WAD versus matched controls in resistant neck rotation. We obtained real-time, non-invasive ultrasound measurements using speckle tracking, multivariate analyses, and mixed-design ANOVA analyses. The results showed altered deformation in the three deepest neck muscle layers, with less deformation area in the WAD group compared to controls in rotation to the most painful side at baseline. Participants in the WAD group performed three months of neck-specific exercises, resulting in improved deformation in the deep neck muscles in WAD and with a similar deformation pattern to controls, and the significant group differences ceased. To reduce coercion in acute inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric units, a better understanding of individuals at risk for seclusion and/or restraint (S/R) is needed. We report data on the proportion of patients secluded/restrained and factors associated with higher risk of S/R. Identifying preventative mechanisms through risk stratification upon inpatient admission can aid the training of mental health professionals, and support shaping specific workflows for at-risk populations for example by joint crisis plans or post-coercion review sessions. Methods: A case-control study included all admissions (n = 782) to a department of child and adolescent psychiatry within 36 months between 2019 and 2022. Data on age, sex, out of home care, primary and comorbid ICD-10 diagnoses, length of stay, prior/multiple admissions were compared between admissions with and without S/R using chi square tests for categorical and t-tests for continuous variables. Uni- and multivariate binary logistic regression models were computed. Results: The overall proportion of S/R was 12.8% (n = 100). Females (p = 0.001), patients in out of home care (p < 0.001), with prior admission (p < 0.001), Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD; p < 0.001) and Borderline personality disorder (BPD; p < 0.001) were at a significantly higher risk of S/R. Length of stay in days (OR 1.01), out of home care (OR 3.85), PTSD (OR 6.20), BPD (OR 15.17), Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)/conduct disorder (OR 4.29), and manic episode/bipolar disorder (OR 36.41) were significantly associated with S/R in multivariate regression. Conclusions: Child and adolescent psychiatric staff should consider risk factors when using coercive measures. Patients with PTSD and/or BPD are the most vulnerable subgroups. Background: Unsafe sleep environments are the primary modifiable risk factor for sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). Despite this knowledge, products that deviate from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) safe sleep recommendations continue to be commonplace, such as inclined sleepers. Analyses to estimate risk among these products are lacking, perpetuating their presence in the marketplace. We present a method of comparing risk of SUID in an inclined sleeper to an AAP-recommended sleep environment. Methods: A case-control analysis using publicly available and previously published survey data was conducted for SUID events occurring between January 1, 2018 and April 12, 2019 (the date of the first inclined sleeper recall). SUID deaths were categorized as occurring in an AAP-recommended sleep environments or in an inclined sleeper. Exposure Odds Ratios (OR) are reported as the risk of SUID among infants using inclined sleepers relative to an AAP-recommended sleep environment. Results: During the study period, 4,900,573 births and 4,363 SUID deaths occurred in the US. Control characteristics were similar between previous night users of an AAP-recommended sleep environment (24%) and inclined sleepers (3.8%). Inclined sleepers were associated with a 5-fold (OR: 5.1; 95% CI: 3.2, 7.9) increased risk of SUID among infants < 12 months compared to infants in an AAP-recommended sleep environment. This risk was greatest among infants ≥ 4 months (RR: 10.4; 95% CI: 5.1, 21.5). Conclusions: This novel analysis fills a longstanding gap in risk assessments of inclined infant sleep products. Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is well-known to trigger a disruption of lipid metabolism. This study aimed to compare lipid profile changes in T1DM patients after achieving glucose control and explore the underlying mechanisms. In addition, we seek to identify novel lipid biomarkers associated with T1DM under conditions of glycemic control. Methods: A total of 27 adults with T1DM (age: 34.3 ± 11.2 yrs) who had maintained glucose control for over a year, and 24 healthy controls (age: 35.1 + 5.56 yrs) were recruited. Clinical characteristics of all participants were analyzed and plasma samples were collected for untargeted lipidomic analysis using mass spectrometry. Results: We identified 594 lipid species from 13 major classes. Differential analysis of plasma lipid profiles revealed a general decline in lipid levels in T1DM patients with controlled glycemic levels, including a notable decrease in triglycerides (TAGs) and diglycerides (DAGs). Moreover, these T1DM patients exhibited lower levels of six phosphatidylcholines (PCs) and three phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs). Random forest analysis determined DAG(14:0/20:0) and PC(18:0/20:3) to be the most prominent plasma markers of T1DM under glycemic control (AUC = 0.966). Conclusions: The levels of all metabolites from the 13 lipid classes were changed in T1DM patients under glycemic control, with TAGs, DAGs, PCs, PEs, and FFAs demonstrating the most significant decrease. Introduction: A minority of geriatric hip fracture patients pursue non-operative treatment. Compared with surgical patients, non-operative patients have higher mortality rates. However, patient satisfaction following non-operative vs operative treatment has not been investigated extensively. The purpose of this study was to compare satisfaction among non-operatively vs operatively treated hip fracture patients. Methods: We identified patients aged 60+ years with proximal femur fractures treated over a 10-year period. Excluded were patients with isolated greater/lesser trochanteric fractures. Patients or relatives were asked to complete a 6-question survey about their treatment satisfaction. Results: Survey responses from 56 operative and 28 non-operative patients were recorded. Overall, 91.1% of operative and 82.1% of non-operative patients were satisfied with their treatment course (P = 0.260). However, only 71.4% of non-operative patients were satisfied with treatment option explanations vs 83.9% of operative patients (P = 0.014). While only 64.3% of non-operative respondents were satisfied with the ultimate treatment outcome (vs 85.7% of operative patients, P = 0.025), 89.3% of patients in each cohort would choose the same treatment plan again. Discussion: Our findings highlight the complexity of defining patient satisfaction, particularly in a geriatric hip fracture population. Unlike previous studies, we chose a direct approach to quantifying patient satisfaction by asking participants specifically about satisfaction with treatment outcome and the overall treatment course. Additional survey questions were then included to assess factors considered important in treatment satisfaction, such as health care provider treatment explanations, post-treatment mobility, and palliative care service involvement. Conclusions: We identified significant differences between non-operatively and operatively treated geriatric hip fracture patients regarding satisfaction with the explanation of treatment options, and ultimate treatment outcomes. There was no significant difference in overall satisfaction with the treatment course or likelihood of choosing the same treatment again. Background: To assess the association between various systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease manifestations, SLE disease activity index 2000 (SLEDAI-2K), systemic lupus international collaborating clinics/American College of Rheumatology Damage Index (SLICC/ACR- SDI) and serum levels of Slit2 in SLE patients. Results: The mean age of SLE patients was 31.12 ± 8.68 years while the age at onset was 26.05 ± 7.60 years. Female: male was 9 vs 1. The mean serum levels of Slit2 in SLE patients were significantly higher than the controls (0.55 ± 0.25 vs 0.42 ± 0.15) (P = 0.013). There was no significant difference in Slit2 levels between patients with active vs inactive SLE (P = 0.353) or between patients with and without lupus nephritis (P = 0.900). An insignificant difference in Slit2 levels was found among SLE patients using SDI (P = 0.982). No significant correlations were observed between the serum Slit2 and SLE patients' demographics, laboratory data, SLEDAI-2K, and SDI except for a positive correlation with platelets and a negative correlation with serum albumin. ROC curve analysis showed that at a cutoff value of 0.44, the area under the curve was 0.677 (95% CI 0.538–0.816, P = 0.013) with a sensitivity of 74%, specificity of 56%, and accuracy of 68%. Conclusion: While we observed elevated serum Slit2 levels in SLE patients, there was no significant correlation observed between serum Slit2 levels and SLE clinical manifestations, disease activity, or damage index. Background and objective: Healthy diets and diets rich in phytochemicals can have health-promoting benefits in prostate cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the possible association between Healthy Diet Indicator (HDI) and Phytochemical Index (PI) with prostate cancer odds ratio. Methods: This is a case-control study conducted in Shiraz, Iran, involving 62 newly diagnosed prostate cancer cases and 63 hospital-based controls. The study collected demographic and anthropometric data, as well as dietary intake information via a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression models were employed to evaluate the association between HDI and PI with prostate cancer. Results: The study included 120 participants and found that individuals with higher HDI and PI scores had a lower odds ratio of prostate cancer (HDI: odds ratio (OR): 0.322 – confidence interval (CI) 95%: 0.14–0.700 - PI: OR: 0.426 - CI 95%: 0.204–0.888). After adjusting for potential confounders, a lower odds ratio of prostate cancer was observed specifically among those with higher HDI scores (OR: 0.376 - CI 95%: 0.163–0.868). Conclusion: The findings of the present study suggest that adopting healthier dietary habits rich in dietary phytochemicals could be effective in preventing and halting the progression of prostate cancer. Background: The prevalence of sarcopenia is increasing in worldwide with accelerated aging process. The high dietary protein intakes are associated with improved muscle mass and strength especially in Asian countries. However, there are few researches on amino acid levels or mechanism exploration. We conducted a case-control study to explore the amino acid metabolic characteristics and potential mechanism of elderly women with sarcopenia using targeted amino acid metabolomics approach combined with an analysis of dietary intake. Methods: For our case-control study, we recruited women (65–75 y) from a Shanghai community with 50 patients with sarcopenia and 50 healthy controls. The consensus updated by the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia in 2019 was used to screening for sarcopenia and control groups. We collected fasting blood samples and evaluated dietary intake. We used the amino acid-targeted metabolomics by ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to identify metabolic differentials between the case and control groups and significantly enriched metabolic pathways. Results: The case (sarcopenia) group had a lower intake of energy, protein, and high-quality protein (P < 0.05) compared to the control (healthy) group. We identified four differential amino acids: arginine (P < 0.001) and cystine (P = 0.003) were lower, and taurine (P = 0.001) were higher in the case group. Background: Reading problems are the most prevalent type of specific learning disability. Reading problems usually result from phonological deficits; however, it is unclear how much other linguistic abilities are impacted as well. Objective: To study different language parameters and cognitive skills in a group of Egyptian children with reading problems to better understand the difficulties that need to be considered in rehabilitation programs for those children. Methods: A case–control study was conducted on 30 children with reading problems having IQs above 85 and 30 normal control children matched for age and gender (their ages ranged from 7 to 9 years and 11 months). They underwent testing for dyslexia by the Arabic dyslexia assessment test, language evaluation using the Receptive Expressive Arabic Language Scale (REAL scale), and the Stanford-Binet intelligence scale, fifth edition. Results: There were highly significant correlations between the severity of dyslexia and total language scores, most of REAL scale subtests. Also, highly significant correlations were detected between the severity of dyslexia and the total IQ, verbal IQ, and verbal working memory subtests. The linear regression model revealed a highly significant association between dyslexia and expressive language scaled scores, total language scaled scores, and a significant association with expressive vocabulary and understanding oral instructions subtests of REAL scale. Additionally, a highly significant association has been detected between dyslexia and the verbal working memory subtest of the Stanford-Binet test. Correlations between total language scores and intellectual abilities (total IQ, verbal IQ, and non-verbal IQ) revealed highly significant positive results. Conclusion: Deficits in both receptive and expressive language were observed in children with reading problems. Background: External surface resorption is pressure-induced resorption and occurs on the external surface of the root, pressure exerted by impacted teeth, is common causes of external surface resorption. Predictive risk factors of impacted supernumerary tooth-associated root resorption (ISTARR) mentioned in this article include supernumerary teeth and patient factors. To investigate the risk factors of impacted supernumerary tooth-associated root resorption and predict the incidence of root resorption. Methods: This restrospective study enrolled 324 patients with impacted supernumerary tooth. All Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) data and patient information were divided into two groups (without tooth root resorption and with root resorption). CBCT images and patient information (age and gender) of 133 patients had adjacent tooth root resorption and 191 did not. seven variables were analysed using binary logistic regression. Results: Individual analysis of potential risk factors showed that age, crown mesiodistal direction, root formation, and odontotheca of the impacted supernumerary tooth were associated significantly with ISTARR. Binary logistic regression showed that impacted supernumerary tooth with odontotheca (Odd Ratio = 2.926), the crown is in the middle (Odd Ratio = 1.446), located at the middle third of the adjacent tooth root (Odd Ratio = 1.614), complete root development (Odd Ratio = 1.334), and patient's age (Odd Ratio = 1.261) were significantly associated with ISTARR risk. Conclusions: The risk factors of root resorption can be detected and predicted early according to the features of supernumerary tooth and patient's age. Our mental representation of our body depends on integrating various sensory modalities, such as tactile information. In tactile distance estimation (TDE) tasks, participants must estimate the distance between two tactile tips applied to their skin. This measure of tactile perception has been linked to body representation assessments. Studies in individuals with fibromyalgia (FM), a chronic widespread pain syndrome, suggest the presence of body representation distortions and tactile alterations, but TDE has never been examined in this population. Twenty participants with FM and 24 pain-free controls performed a TDE task on three Body regions (upper limb, trunk, lower limb), in which they manually estimated the interstimuli distance on a tablet. TDE error, the absolute difference between the estimation and the interstimuli distance, was not different between the Groups, on any Body region. Drawings of their body as they felt it revealed clear and frequent distortions of body representation in the group with FM, compared to negligible perturbations in controls. This contrast between distorted body drawings and unaltered TDE suggests a preserved integration of tactile information but an altered integration of this information with other sensory modalities to generate a precise and accurate body representation. Future research should investigate the relative contribution of each sensory information and prior knowledge about the body in body representation in individuals with FM to shed light on the observed distortions. Background: Promoting prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients might occur secondary to RA therapy as well as sedentary life style. However, conflicting observations have been reported on the correlation between MetS and RA. This study aimed to determine the frequency of MetS and association of its components in RA. Methods: In this study, 500 RA patients and 500 age- and gender-matched healthy controls were enrolled. MetS was fulfilled through the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. A multivariate regression model was used to control for variables independently associated with the risk of MetS in RA patients. Results: The prevalence of MetS was 58.8% on IDF criteria in RA patients that was higher than controls (20.4%). Higher incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the familial history of CVD, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), smoking, dyslipidemia, and higher levels of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), total cholesterol level, fasting blood sugar (FBS), triglyceride (TG) level, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) level, while lower levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were associated with an increased risk of MetS in RA patients. Multivariate regression analysis indicated that age, WC, dyslipidemia, LDL, and DAS28 were independent predictors of MetS in the RA patients. Conclusions: The prevalence of MetS is higher in RA patients. Our findings suggest an association between cardiovascular risk factors and the increased prevalence of MetS in RA patients. Background: Postoperative urinary retention (POUR) is a common complication of anorectal surgery. This study was to determine the incidence of POUR in anorectal surgery for benign anorectal diseases, identify its risk factors, and establish a nomogram for prediction of POUR. Methods: A nested case–control study was conducted. The clinical data of patients were collected, and the incidence of POUR was analyzed. Univariate analysis was used to identify the risk factors associated with POUR, and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine independent risk factors for POUR. A nomogram for the preoperative prediction of POUR using a logistic regression model was developed (n = 609). Results: The incidence of POUR after anorectal surgery for benign anorectal diseases was 19.05%. The independent risk factors for POUR were: female (P = 0.007); male with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) (P = 0.001); postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) score > 6 (P = 0.002); patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) (P = 0.016); and a surgery time > 30 min (P = 0.039). In the nomogram, BPH is the most important factor affecting the occurrence of POUR, followed by a postoperative VAS score > 6, PCEA, surgery time > 30 min, and sex has the least influence. Conclusion: For patients undergoing anorectal surgery for benign anorectal diseases, preventive measures can be taken to reduce the risk of POUR, taking into account the following risk factors: female or male with BPH, severe postoperative pain, PCEA, and surgery time > 30 min. Furthermore, we developed and validated an easy-to-use nomogram for preoperative prediction of POUR in anorectal surgery for benign anorectal diseases. Background: Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) is one of the most common autoimmune inflammatory disorders affecting the orbit that characterized by swelling of extra ocular muscles (EOMs) and expansion of the orbital fat. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) could assess the microstructural integrity of tissue. We aimed at this study to assess the role of DTI in the evaluation of EOMs and orbital fat in GO and identify the relationship with disease activity. Results: Case–control study included 40 patients diagnosed as Graves' disease (20 active and 20 inactive) and 10 health control subjects underwent DTI. Low fraction anisotropy (FA) and high mean diffusivity (MD) of inferior rectus (IR), medial rectus (MR) and orbital fat in GO versus healthy control (HC), while high FA and high MD in active group versus inactive group. In order to differentiate between GO and HC; FA cutoff point of IR, MR& orbital fat were 0.46, 0.45 and 0.26 with sensitivity 98.8%,98.8% and 93.8% and specificity 95.0%, 95.0% and 85%, respectively. MD cutoff point for IR, MR and orbital fat 1.24, 1.27 and 1.275 with sensitivity 97.5%, 98.8% and 98.8% and specificity 95.0%, 95% and 95%, respectively. To differentiate between active and inactive GO; FA cutoff point of IR, MR and orbital fat were 0.35, 0.36 and 0.22 respectively with sensitivity 80.0%, 82.5% and 72.5% and specificity 95.0%, 85.0% and 65.0%, respectively. MD cutoff point for IR, MR and orbital fat were 1.58, 1.63 and 1.54 respectively with sensitivity 90.0%, 97.5% and 85.0%, and specificity 90.0%, 80.0% and 62.5%, respectively. Conclusions: DTI parameters (FA and MD) of EOMs and orbital fat are considered as crucial radiological biomarkers for diagnosis of GO and could quantitatively differentiate active form inactive disease. Background: Schizophrenia is a prevalent psychiatric disorder that affects 1% of the global population. Schizophrenia frequently begins in late adolescence or early adulthood, causing significant educational, social, and economic costs for people and society. Functional neuroimaging research on schizophrenia physiopathology has been beneficial. Arterial spin labelling (ASL) is one of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technologies that assess brain function without radiation. Aim of the work: The purpose of this work was to evaluate the added value of combined ASL-perfusion MRI and MRS in schizophrenic patients. Methods: This prospective case–control study was carried out on two groups: First group was 30 patients who were diagnosed clinically as schizophrenic patients, and second group was 20 healthy volunteers as a control group for comparison in the period from August 2021 till July 2022. Results: The majority of newly diagnosed cases had significant higher positive symptoms than chronic cases. According to arterial spin labelling (ASL) data, rCBF was noticed to be reduced in anterior cingulate, frontal lobe, and parietal lobe of both patients' subgroups but more significant in chronically ill patients. Convergent results of decreased rCBF were also found in the parietal lobe and occipital lobe. Magnetic resonance spectroscopic analysis showed that NAA was decreased in the anterior cingulate cortex, thalami and basal ganglia of the newly diagnosed cases more than chronic cases. The ASL-MRI perfusion accurately detected the hypo-perfusion of different brain regions with sensitivity 100%, specificity 66.67%, positive predictive value 96.43%, negative predictive value 100%, and accuracy 96.67%, while MR spectroscopy showed sensitivity 100%, specificity 33.33%, positive predictive value 93.10%, negative predictive value 100%, and accuracy 93.33% in evaluation of changes of brain metabolites. Conclusion: ASL is a promising functional MRI technique that can produce together with MRS quantitative information about the metabolites of different brain regions. The ASL-MRI appears as a reliable non-invasive technique to measure cerebral blood flow and identify decreased rCBF without any contrast administration, and it could be repeatable which helps in early diagnosis as well as follow-up of the progression of the disease. Introduction: Postoperative pain management and postoperative nausea and vomiting are a persistent challenge for both health care providers and patients. Acupuncture is an effective and safe modality for the management of pain and nausea, and has the potential to play a key role in postoperative pain management. This study explores the utility and feasibility of acupuncture in the immediate postoperative setting. Methods: In a retrospective case–control study, 22 patients who underwent elective surgeries and received acupuncture in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) were compared with 88 case controls. Indications for acupuncture therapy included persistent pain, nausea, or anxiety. Patient satisfaction and symptom improvement after acupuncture were assessed. PACU nurses and patients were queried on their perspectives on using this therapy. Demographic data, perioperative opioid consumption, pain score in the PACU, incidence of postoperative nausea, PACU length of stay, and unintended hospital admission were assessed. The groups with/without acupuncture were compared using Wilcoxon rank sum test or Fisher's exact test as appropriate. Results: A total of 78.9% of patients receiving acupuncture felt improvement in their symptoms. 94.7% of recovery nurses who cared for patients who received acupuncture felt that it was helpful and 78.9% did not believe it was disruptive. Patients who opted for acupuncture had a statistically significant higher overall median (interquartile range) pain score in the PACU (7.0 [5.2, 9.5] vs. 5.0 [3.0, 7.0], p = 0.009) and higher postoperative opioid consumption (22.5 [9.8, 44.8] vs. 15.0 [0.0, 30.0], p = 0. 03). There was no difference between total perioperative opioid consumption between groups (p = 0.94). Conclusions: Most patients who received acupuncture therapy in the PACU were satisfied with their therapy and would recommend it to future patients undergoing surgery. Background: Pregabalin, approved for various medical conditions, has shown increasing misuse potential globally. However, limited research exists on pregabalin dependence in India. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of pregabalin dependence among individuals seeking substance use disorder (SUD) treatment in North India. Methods: A cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted on patients enrolled between August 2022 and July 2023 at an academic institution-based addiction treatment center. Case records of patients with pregabalin dependence were retrieved and compared with controls with opioid dependence but no history of pregabalin use. Results: Among 3766 registered patients, 135 had pregabalin dependence (prevalence: 3.58 per 100 registered patients). Pregabalin-dependent patients were male, with a median usage duration of eight months and a median daily dose of 1200 mg. Most had concurrent opioid dependence, primarily heroin, used via the injection route. The odds of pregabalin dependence among those with opioid dependence were significantly higher than those with other substance dependence (OR 1.44, 95% CI 1.13-1.85). Reasons for pregabalin use included opioid craving reduction, sedation, and euphoria. Patients with pregabalin dependence were more likely to have lower socioeconomic status (P < 0.0001) and urban residence (P = 0.032), an earlier age of substance use initiation (P = 0.02) and treatment seeking (P < 0.0001), and a higher co-occurrence of psychiatric disorders (P = 0.007) and less occurrence of alcohol dependence (P = 0.03). Purpose: Gastric cancer (GC) is among the leading causes of cancer mortality worldwide. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between dietary fiber intake and GC. Methods: We pooled data from 11 population or hospital-based case–control studies included in the Stomach Cancer Pooling (StoP) Project, for a total of 4865 histologically confirmed cases and 10,626 controls. Intake of dietary fibers and other dietary factors was collected using food frequency questionnaires. We calculated the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the association between dietary fiber intake and GC by using a multivariable logistic regression model adjusted for study site, sex, age, caloric intake, smoking, fruit and vegetable intake, and socioeconomic status. We conducted stratified analyses by these factors, as well as GC anatomical site and histological type. Results: The OR of GC for an increase of one quartile of fiber intake was 0.91 (95% CI: 0.85, 0.97), that for the highest compared to the lowest quartile of dietary fiber intake was 0.72 (95% CI: 0.59, 0.88). Results were similar irrespective of anatomical site and histological type. Conclusion: Our analysis supports the hypothesis that dietary fiber intake may exert a protective effect on GC. Folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism (FOCM) plays an important role in colorectal carcinogenesis. Previous studies have assessed the role of folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism (FOCM)-related gene-diet interaction in the aetiology of colorectal cancer (CRC), however, the results remained inconclusive. Thus, this study aimed to investigate dietary factors and genetic variants related to FOCM, as well as potential nutrient-gene and nutrient-lifestyle interactions, on CRC risk. This observational study included 229 patients diagnosed with CRC and 229 age- and sex-matched subjects as controls from a population-based bowel cancer screening program. Conditional logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) for CRC risk. A Bonferroni-corrected threshold of α = 0.005 was considered significant, and P values less than 0.05 were considered to be suggestive of an association. After Bonferroni correction, a high dietary intake of betaine was associated with a decreased risk of CRC in the adjusted model (OR, 95% CI: 0.21, 0.10–0.40, P < 0.001). Two SNPs, rs1476413 and rs17824591, exhibited significant gene-diet interactions with total choline ad vitamin B12 intakes, respectively, in adjusted models (total choline, tertile 3 vs. 1, OR, 95% CI: 0.25, 0.11–0.66, Pinteraction = 0.012; vitamin B12, tertile 2 vs. tertile 1, OR, 95% CI: 2.48, 1.04-5.00, Pinteraction = 0.003). These findings suggest that betaine intake and interactions between some dietary factors and variants in MTHFR and MTHFD1 genes have an influence on CRC risk in the population studied. Background: Although there are many case reports and qualitative studies on the likely positive effects of drama on mental health there have been few quantitative studies with mentally ill patients. Aims: To assess the effect of drama training in patients receiving nidotherapy with a range of mental and personality disorders on changes in self-esteem and personality strengths over a 1-month period compared with two control groups, one with similar mental disorders and another without, who had similar assessments but no acting involvement. Method: A total of 19 patients were recruited from a mental health charity with current significant mental illness (active group: n = 6) (b) a control group of patients with current mental illness who were not involved in acting (n = 5), and an additional control group with no current mental illness (n = 8) The patients involved in drama were taking part in nidotherapy, an environmental intervention. Two self-rating scales, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and Abbreviated Personality Strengths Scale (APSS) recorded changes in self-esteem and personality strengths at base-line and after 1 month in the participants. Random effects modelling was used to analyse the data. Results: The intervention group showed positive improvement in personality strengths (p =.009) compared to the control group that had no mental illness, and also improved more than the control group with mental illness but not to a significant degree (p =.16). Self-esteem recorded with the Rosenberg scale was lower in those in the acting group at baseline compared with the other two groups (p =.088) but after acting training improved by 29% to be equivalent to the control groups. Conclusions: Despite the limited numbers in this study, and the consequent inability to make firm conclusions about the efficacy of drama therapy as part of nidotherapy, the findings suggest that larger trials of this approach are feasible and worth exploring..
