Abstract

Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derivatives that contain an acrylonitrile group result in interesting scaffold molecules that can be obtained from biomass. However, the synthesis of these types of molecules has not been extensively studied. In this study, we investigated the catalytic activity of Mg(OH)2 and MgO materials. Specifically, we evaluated the Knoevenagel reaction between HMF and malononitrile as a test reaction under solvent-free conditions. The fresh and used catalysts were evaluated using various techniques. Our results indicate that the combination of synthesis methods influences the crystalline, basic, and textural properties of the catalysts. We found that water plays an essential role in obtaining high yields. By using this simple and inexpensive method, we were able to achieve yields near 90% in short reaction times ($

30. Young Citizens Participation: Empirical Testing of a Conceptual Model

Abstract

A growing body of literature from different disciplines addresses concepts and measurement of citizenship. The present article seeks to contribute to this field by examining the issue of youth citizenship from a comparative international perspective and proposing a simplified conceptual model that can be operationalized. This model includes a community dimension, which refers to individual's relationship with their community associations, and a civic dimension, concerning institutional processes such as voting and/or political activism. The model was tested using multigroup confirmatory factor analysis and measurement equivalence for eighth-grade students (n = 139.875) across 38 countries that participated in the International Civic and Citizenship Study (2009). Our results find support for the proposed conceptual model and its invariance across countries, and we discuss the implications for theory and further research.

31. Patterns of Civic and Political Commitment in Early Adolescence

Abstract

Interest in understanding how civic engagement emerges has been fueled by worries about the decline of youth participation in conventional political activities. Acknowledging the developmental nature of civic engagement, this study analyzes involvement in civic activities during early adolescence. We used latent class analysis to identify patterns of participation in a representative sample of Chilean adolescents. A four-class model was highlighted by two contrasting classes: an "involved" class, with high probabilities of participation, and an "uninvolved" class, with low probabilities of participation. A third class--"volunteers"--mostly participates in organizations involved in community service, religious or social causes. This type of participation conforms to the preservation of the status quo, in contrast to a more political or activist form of participation that challenges it. Classes were partially invariant by gender and socioeconomic status. Females were more prevalent in the "involved" class, and males in the "uninvolved" class. Adolescents' interest in politics, discussion of political issues, citizenship self-efficacy, and school involvement were associated with higher odds of belonging to the "involved" class.

Abstract

Calcium and barium carbonates were synthesized via biologically induced mineralization using Bacillus subtilis. The biogenic materials were characterized by using infrared and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. These biogenic carbonates were then tested as basic heterogenous catalysts for the solvent-free Knoevenagel reaction between 5-HMF derivatives and active methylene compounds, producing 3-(furan-2-yl)acrylonitrile derivatives in 71–87% yields. Optimal catalytic performance was achieved with a 50:50 Ca:Ba ratio, attributed to the synergistic interaction between baritocalcite and vaterite, which enhances the availability of active basic sites and surface interactions. This method offers operational simplicity, reduced reaction times, good yields, excellent (E)-selectivity, and minimal catalyst loading. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Previous research has shown that schools often justify student performance differences using meritocratic ideals. One potential consequence of such ideals is the legitimization of outcome inequalities across various spheres, including those traditionally associated with equality and redistribution. In this study, we argue that the promotion of meritocratic values during school age can shape students' beliefs about meritocracy and influence their views on market-based access to health, pensions, and education. Using data from the 2017 National Study of Civic Education in Chile, which includes 5047 eighth-grade students from 231 schools, we estimated a series of multilevel models (lme4 library, R version 4.1.3) to test our hypotheses. Our findings show that a significant proportion of Chilean students agree with market justice principles—more so than adults. Most students endorse meritocratic views, particularly the notion that effort should be rewarded, which strongly correlates with market justice preferences: students who believe in meritocracy are more likely to justify inequalities based on financial capacity. At the school level, market justice preferences are higher in high-status schools but lower in schools with higher academic achievement. Furthermore, the conditional influence of meritocratic beliefs diminishes in schools with higher socioeconomic status and performance levels. These results suggest that the association between meritocratic beliefs and market justice preferences is already established at school age and is shaped by the school environment. Abstract

Chlorpyrifos, a pesticide widely applied in agricultural activities, may be transported from soil to surface water and even to groundwater by leaching and runoff due to physicochemical interactions between soil and this substance. Once in the environmental compartments, chlorpyrifos may be transformed by biotic and abiotic pathway reactions to increase the complex and multiplex effects over biota. Thus, biodegradation is an important natural reaction to reduce the environmental levels of pesticides and autochthonous microbiota with a high potential for the biotransformation of substances and could be related to the persistence and dynamics of chlorpyrifos. In this study, the biodegradation of chlorpyrifos under autochthonous microbiota in natural water from a reservoir was assayed. In samples, bacterial indicators such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and total coliforms were detected using selective culture medium and differential culture medium, such as Pseudalert and Colilert. Under aqueous medium with autochthonous microbiota, chlorpyrifos was transformed to 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP), and half-life was estimated at 10.2 h. Results showed that these bacterial indicators in the reservoir may reduce the chlorpyrifos levels in the water body but whether the metabolite TCP emerges in the water body with aquatic effects remains unknown., El clorpirifos, es un plaguicida aplicado ampliamente en actividades agrícolas. Esta sustancia, puede ser transportado desde el suelo a las aguas superficiales e incluso a las subterráneas por medio de lixiviación y escorrentía debido a las interacciones fisicoquímicas suelo-sustancia. Una vez en los compartimentos ambientales, el clorpirifos puede transformarse mediante reacciones bióticas y abióticas, lo que aumenta los efectos complejos y múltiples sobre la biota. Asi, la biodegradación es una reacción natural importante que reduce los niveles ambientales de plaguicidas y por lo tanto, la microbiota autóctona con alto potencial de biotransformación podría estar relacionada con la persistencia y dinámica del clorpirifos. En este studio, se amnalizó la biodegradación de clorpirifos por medio de microbiota autóctona en agua natural de un embalse. En las muestras se detectaron indicadores bacterianos como Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli y coliformes totales utilizando medio de cultivo selectivo y medio de cultivo diferencial, tales como Pseudalert y Colilert. En medio acuoso con microbiota autóctona, el clorpirifos se transformó en 3,5,6-tricloro-2-piridinol (TCP), y la vida media se estimó en 10,2 h. Los resultados mostraron que estos indicadores bacterianos en el embalse pueden reducir los niveles de clorpirifos en el cuerpo de agua, pero aún se desconoce si el metabolito TCP emerge en el cuerpo de agua con efectos acuáticos.

44. Uso de la fitoestabilización asistida para facilitar la producción de aromáticas en residuos mineros como estrategia de rehabilitación ambiental y socioeconómica

Abstract

[SPA] La intensa actividad minera desarrollada en el Distrito Minero de Cartagena-La Unión generó grandes cantidades de residuos, entre los que se encuentran los residuos que constituyen las balsas o depósitos mineros. Estos depósitos mineros se caracterizan por presentar condiciones químicas y físicas adversas, que incluyen altas concentraciones de metal/oides y sales, bajo contenido de materia orgánica y escasez de nutrientes, lo que impide el crecimiento y desarrollo de la vegetación. Además, estos residuos presentan riesgos ambientales y de salud pública debido a la dispersión de metal/oides tóxicos a través de los procesos de erosión hídrica y eólica. Para reducir estos riesgos, la formación de suelos de calidad es un requisito imprescindible, ya que favorecerá la colonización, el crecimiento y desarrollo de la vegetación. De este modo, se reducirán las tasas de erosión y, por tanto, la transferencia de metal/oides tóxicos al medioambiente, donde a su vez el suelo creado se convierte en sumidero de carbono, lo que ayuda a mitigar los efectos del cambio climático. De igual modo, ofrece una alternativa con beneficios económicos a los propietarios de zonas mineras, ya que en la rehabilitación pueden ser usadas especies aromáticas pudiendo extraer aceites esenciales comercializables, consiguiendo una rehabilitación ambiental y socioeconómica de los depósitos mineros. El objetivo general de este estudio fue evaluar la eficiencia de la fitoestabilización asistida en el depósito minero Cabezo Rajao, mediante el uso de Piptatherum miliaceum y Coronilla juncea, combinado con la adición de enmiendas orgánicas como biochar y compost e inorgánicas como caliza y zeolita, las cuales mejoran las condiciones físicas, químicas y biológicas del suelo, así como la reducción de la disponibilidad de metal/oides, lo que permitirá el desarrollo de especies aromáticas (Salvia rosmarinus y Thymus zygis), con interés económico. To reduce these risks, the formation of quality soils is an essential requirement, as it will favor the colonization, growth, and development of vegetation. In this way, erosion rates will be reduced and thus the transfer of toxic metal/oids to the environment, where the soil created becomes a carbon sink, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change. Moreover, offering an alternative with economic benefits to the owners of mining areas, since aromatic species can be used in the rehabilitation and marketable essential oils can be extracted, achieving an environmental and socioeconomic rehabilitation of the tailing ponds. The general objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of aided phytostabilization in the Cabezo Rajao tailing pond, using Piptatherum miliaceum and Coronilla juncea, combined with the addition of organic amendments, such as biochar and compost, and inorganic amendments such as, limestone and zeolite, which improve the physical, chemical and biological conditions of the soil, as well as reducing the availability of metal/oids, which will allow the development of aromatic species (Salvia rosmarinus and Thymus zygis), of economic interest.
