Victims of violence experience both acute injuries and chronic illness and may seek acute self-care and/or have the need for chronic medication therapy. Thus, the community-based, ambulatory pharmacy setting can serve as a portal for identification of, and intervention for, victims of violence. This article provides background on four types of interpersonal violence, including intimate partner, child and elder abuse, in addition to sexual assault. This article briefly reviews the statutory reporting requirements for pharmacists in the United States, identifies educational needs for pharmacists with existing resources and suggests a method for the ambulatory pharmacist’s intervention.Keywords: interpersonal violence and victimization, pharmacy practice, protocols for pharmacy practice

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis is a chronic metabolic syndrome associated with debilitating consequences that represents one of the major non-communicable diseases and the most common bone illness that affects both men and women. This observational study evaluates the amount of physical activity and the nutritional intake in a group of postmenopausal women who have a sedentary job. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All subjects underwent a medical evaluation, a body impedance analysis to evaluate body composition (fat mass, fat-free mass, and body cell mass), and a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to analyze bone mineral density. Additionally, a 3-day food record questionnaire and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire were administered respectively to evaluate patients’ foods and beverages assumptions and the participants’ Physical Activity levels. RESULTS: The study showed that most of the patients had a moderate activity level and inadequate calcium and vitamin D assumption compared to guidelines. CONCLUSIONS: The onset of osteoporosis seemed to be reduced at higher levels of leisure time, domestic, and transport activities, even in subjects who have a sedentary job and insufficient assumption of micronutrients. Chronic degenerative non-communicable diseases (CDNCDs), in particular chronic kidney disease, induce gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis, which, in turn, worsens the progression of CDNCDs and patients' quality of life. We analyzed literature studies to discuss the possible positive and beneficial impact of physical activity on GM composition and CV risk in CKD patients. Regular physical activity seems to be able to positively modulate the GM, reducing the systemic inflammation and consequently the production of uremic gut-derived toxins, which are directly correlated with the increase of cardiovascular risk. In particular, the accumulation of indoxyl sulphate (IS) seems to be able to induce vascular calcifications, vascular stiffness and cardiac calcifications, while p-Cresyl sulphate (p-CS) seems to be able to exert a cardiotoxic action through metabolic pathways, capable of inducing oxidative stress. In addition, trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) can alter lipid metabolism, inducing the production of foam cells and causing an accelerated atherosclerosis process. In this context, a regular physical activity program seems to represent an adjuvant non-pharmacological approach for the clinical management of CKD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For mothers, intimate partner violence (IPV) presents a concern not only for their own well-being but also for that of their children who are exposed to the violence and its aftermath. In focus groups with adult women ( N = 39) across three jurisdictions who had experienced legal system intervention for IPV victimization, mothers raised unsolicited concerns about the negative effects of IPV exposure on their children. These comments were not prompted by the facilitator but were raised by women in all seven of the focus groups during discussions about motivations and barriers to participation in prosecution of their abusive partners. The overall message was that victims with children felt very conflicted. Children both facilitate and inhibit leaving the abusive relationship. Mothers wanted to spare their children from harmful effects of violence but also wanted to keep their families together and protect their children from potential agitation and instability caused by legal system involvement. Participants described how fears and threats of involvement from child protective services inhibited help-seeking while simultaneously voicing a desire for services that would help their children. More research is needed to help service providers understand the quagmire mothers who are victims of IPV encounter regarding their children's wellbeing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: To assess physical and mental functional health status as associated with the severity of intimate partner violence (IPV) and perceived danger. METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional survey of all patients aged 18-55 in an urban emergency department during a convenience sample of shifts. Instruments included the George Washington Universal Violence Prevention Screening protocol, administered by computer during the initial visit, the Short-Form 12 Health Survey (SF-12), the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS2), and the Revised Danger Assessment (DA), administered by interview at 1 week follow-up. RESULTS: In total, 548 (20%) participants screened disclosed IPV victimization. Of those, 216 (40%) completed the follow-up assessment 1 week later. This cohort was 91% African American, 70% single, and 63% female, with a mean age of 35 (SD 10.41). Both physical and mental health functioning scores were lower than normative levels (50) compared with national averages: Physical Component Summary (PCS) scale 43.64 (SD 10.86) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scale 37.46 (SD 12.29). As physical assault, psychological aggression, and reported injury increased on the CTS2, mental health functioning diminished (p < 0.01). Increased physical assault and psychological aggression were also associated with diminished physical health functioning (p < 0.05). As victim-perceived danger increased on the DA, both physical and mental health functioning decreased (p < 0.01, p < 0.001, respectively). Greater self-advocacy activities were associated with lower mental (but not physical) health functioning as well. Females experienced worsening mental health functioning as both physical assault and psychological aggression increased, whereas male victims experienced worsening mental health functioning only as psychological aggression increased. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that IPV takes a greater mental than physical toll (for both sexes) and that as IPV severity increases, mental health functioning diminishes and self-advocacy behaviors increase. Additionally, as perceived danger increases, both physical and mental health status worsens. This has important implications for clinicians to assess and consider IPV victims' perceptions of their situations relative to danger, not just the levels of abuse they are experiencing. Objectives: This study assesses Veterans Affairs mental health providers' understanding of intimate partner violence (IPV) and the perception of patient benefit of routine inquiry and service referral. The impact of an instructional curriculum was also examined following an interactive training.Methods: An evidence-based curriculum was offered to Veterans Affairs mental health providers. The curriculum utilized didactic methods, case scenarios, and resources regarding referrals and statutes regarding crimes related to violence and abuse. The participants completed pre- and post-training surveys to assess their perceptions about IPV and to evaluate the training.Results: Seventy-three individuals completed the training. Fifty-four of the participants were female, and thirty-three were over the age of 45 years. Fifty-one individuals completed both surveys. There were no differences between participants' views of the seriousness of IPV in the community or their practices before or after the training. However, participants scored significantly higher on the knowledge and efficacy measures after the training (p < 0.001).Conclusion: Following an educational intervention, providers demonstrate more knowledge and efficacy regarding routine inquiry and referral for IPV. Introduction: It has been well documented that men who identify with a sexual orientation other than heterosexual are at a greater risk for suicide-related outcomes. What is less known are the protective factors that can reduce such negative outcomes and contribute to their resilience., Methods: This study used data collected between December 1, 2021, and January 2022 to understand how family factors contribute to or prevent depression symptoms and suicide outcomes among young Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) ages 18 to 29 (N = 400). A path analysis was conducted to explore the direct and indirect effects of suicide attempts., Results: Surprisingly, there were nuanced findings that showed having a family member or friend die by suicide was indirectly associated with suicide planning and suicide attempts. It was also unexpectedly noted that there was a positive relationship between higher rates of depressive symptoms and higher levels of support from family members., Conclusions: The population focused on in this study is understudied and has unique needs. Identifying familial support may not automatically reduce the thoughts and plans of young BMSM, which is an example of why their intersecting marginalized identities must be considered when conducting further research, creating interventions, and providing therapeutic services., (© 2024 The Authors. Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a complex disease that causes pain, stiffness and swelling, limiting function and mobility, thus interfering with daily life and affecting personal, social, and psychological aspects of life., Objective: To evidence the role of exercise on pain reduction and the effectiveness of one type of training over another in terms of pain, functional capacity, and inflammatory biomarkers in OA., Methods: Studies retrieved from Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus databases were systematically reviewed. RCTs involving physical exercise interventions in participants with OA were included. The 3 main outcomes considered in the systematic review were pain, functional capacity and inflammatory biomarkers. The effects of different types of interventions (aerobic, resistance, combined, neuromuscular and others) were analysed for each outcome. Systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted following the PRISMA Statement., Results: 21 studies were included in the systematic review and 11 in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis was conducted on pain in training intervention subgroups, showing a larger effect size for neuromuscular training -2,26 (95 % CI -4,37 to -0,14). Functional capacity and inflammatory biomarkers were analysed only with a systematic review because it was not possible to estimate the efficacy of the different training protocols with a meta-analysis., Conclusion: Neuromuscular training protocols seem to be the most effective in reducing pain in OA. Direct comparison of different training treatment options on functional capacity and inflammatory biomarkers for OA is not currently feasible in practice, due to the heterogeneity of the test and the small number of studies. In this article, we celebrate Dante Cicchetti's extensive contributions to the discipline of developmental psychopathology. In his seminal article, he articulated why developmental psychopathology was imperative to create research portfolios that could inform the causes, consequences, and trajectories for adults often initiated by early lived experiences (Cicchetti, 1984). In this three-part article, we share our transdisciplinary efforts to use developmental psychopathology as a foundational theory from which to develop, implement, and evaluate interventions for populations who experienced early adversity or who were at risk for child abuse and neglect. After describing interventions conducted at Mt. Hope Family Center that spanned over three decades, we highlight the criticality of disseminating results and address policy implications of this work. We conclude by discussing future directions to facilitate work in developmental psychopathology. Currently, one of three national National Institute of Child Health and Human Development-funded child abuse and neglect centers, we look forward to continuing to build upon Dante's efforts to disseminate this important work to improve society for our children, our nation's often most vulnerable and forgotten citizens.

Background: Patients with psychiatric disorders experience a reduced quality of life also due to the antipsychotic drugs assumed, that negatively affects their cognitive abilities. A healthy lifestyle, such as physical activity, can improve both functional abilities and mental health of patients with a dual diagnosis, psychiatric and cognitive. Despite this knowledge, these people are more sedentary than the general population, probably because of their apathy, core aspects of the illness. Animal Assisted Interventions (AAIs) seem to be a valid tool to stimulate them to practice physical exercise thanks to the empathy generated by the relationship with the animal., Methods: This case study aims to evaluate the effect of 4 months AAIs on apathy and physical efficiency in 2 patients with dual diagnoses. Patient A and patient B, affected by psychiatric disorders and mild cognitive impairment, were recruited to perform an AAI, one with a dog and the other with a horse., Results: At the end of the study data showed a decrease of apathy in both patients: -20,6% in patient A and -9.8% in patient B, as well as a reduction of psychiatric symptoms. Moreover, both patients improved the functional parameters evaluated through the Short Physical Battery Test (patient A = +33.3%; patient B = +28.6%)., Conclusions: The preliminary results of this case report suggest that well-structured, individualized AAIs, with a horse or with a dog, could be considered as a useful adjunctive therapy to the usual treatment programs to improve both functional abilities and mental health in psychiatric patients., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Biological age, reflecting the cumulative damage in the body over a lifespan, is a dynamic measure more indicative of individual health than chronological age. Accelerated aging, when biological age surpasses chronological age, is implicated in poorer clinical outcomes, especially for breast cancer (BC) survivors undergoing treatments. This preliminary study investigates the impact of a 16-week online supervised physical activity (PA) intervention on biological age in post-surgery female BC patients. Telomere length was measured using qPCR, and the ELOVL2-based epigenetic clock was assessed via DNA methylation pyrosequencing of the ELOVL2 promoter region. Telomere length remained unchanged, but the ELOVL2 epigenetic clock indicated a significant decrease in biological age in the PA group, suggesting the potential of PA interventions to reverse accelerated aging processes in BC survivors. The exercise group showed improved cardiovascular fitness, highlighting PA's health impact. Finally, the reduction in biological age, as measured by the ELOVL2 epigenetic clock, was significantly associated with improvements in cardiovascular fitness and handgrip strength, supporting improved recovery. Epigenetic clocks can potentially assess health status and recovery progress in BC patients, identifying at-risk individuals in clinical practice. This study provides potential and valuable insights into how PA benefits BC survivors' health, supporting the immediate benefits of a 16-week exercise intervention in mitigating accelerated aging. The findings could suggest a holistic approach to improving the health and recovery of post-surgery BC patients.

Objective: Person-centered approaches are essential for characterizing heterogeneity in child development as it relates to child maltreatment (CM) and dating violence. The present study had two aims: 1) identify person-centered patterns of childhood socioemotional functioning, 2) examine whether patterns of child socioemotional functioning mediate the association between CM and dating violence., Participants and Setting: Wave 1 comprised N = 680 children ages 10-12 years with and without experiences of CPS-substantiated CM facing socio-economic challenge. Wave 2 included N = 407 emerging adults ages 18-24 years old., Methods: Children participated in a summer camp research program at Wave 1 and a follow up interview at Wave 2. Participant CM history and socioemotional functioning was assessed at Wave 1. Exposure to dating violence was assessed at Wave 2. A latent profile analysis identified patterns of socioemotional functioning. Then regression analyses examined associations of socioemotional functioning with CM and dating violence., Results: Three profiles of child socioemotional functioning were identified (well-regulated/low distress, high externalizing/high aggression, high internalizing). CM was significantly associated with membership in the high externalizing/high aggression class. Patterns of child socioemotional functioning did not mediate the association between CM and dating violence, although number of subtypes of CM had a significant positive direct effect on dating violence., Conclusions: Results underscore the multidimensional nature of socioemotional functioning and the predictive power of number of subtypes of CM on dating violence. Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) will become the fifth leading cause of death in the world by 2040. It is fundamental to prevent and treat this pathology to reduce its impact on national health costs. This trial's aim is to evaluate the effects induced by a combination of consumed functional foods (FFs) with adapted physical activity (APA) on the progression of CKD-related comorbidities., Methods: The study lasted 12 weeks. We divided 40 CKD patients into four groups: mixed (FF + APA), APA, FF and control group (usual care). The FFs were characterized by their total antioxidant capacity and antiradical activity. The APA was performed though an online training protocol, three times per week, 1 h each session., Results: At the end of the study, we observed, in the mixed group, a decrease in azotemia ( p = 0.0272), diastolic blood pressure ( p = 0.0169), and C-reactive protein ( p = 0.0313), with increases in the FORD test ( p = 0.0203) and fat free mass ( p = 0.0258). The APA group showed a reduction in total cholesterol ( p = 0.0039)., Conclusions: The combination of FFs and APA can help counteract several CKD-related comorbidities, such as arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia and uremic sarcopenia, and improve the CKD patients' quality of life.

This study explored the influence of living settings on physical activity (PA) levels and volition in exercise and their correlation, considering sex differences. Five hundred and sixty-six university students (261 rural and 305 urban) from Calabria region (Italy) attending universities courses filled an online survey where Global Physical Activity Questionnaire and Volition in Exercise Questionnaire were administered. Rural females (RF) showed lower PA levels and self-confidence than rural males (RM) (p<0.01). Postponing training and unrelated thoughts were higher in RF than RM (p<0.01 and p<0.05 respectively). PA levels, self-confidence and coping with failure were lower in urban females (UF) than urban males (UM) (p<0.01), Postponing training and unrelated thoughts were higher in UF than UM (p<0.01 and p<0.05). In RF and UF, PA levels positively correlated with self-confidence (Rho = 0.397) and coping with failure (Rho = 0.330), whereas negatively correlated with postponing training (Rho = -0.487) and unrelated thoughts (Rho = -0.283). In RM and UM, PA levels positively correlated with self-confidence (Rho = 0.270) and coping with failure (Rho = 0.258), whereas it negatively correlated with postponing training (Rho = -0.285). PA levels positively correlated with reasons (Rho = 0.260) only in UM. We showed for the first time the relationship between PA and volition factors considering the living setting in university students.
