Abstract

Research on multidirectional waves is increasing as studies on added resistance advance. In this study, the added resistance of the multidirectional regular waves of the KCS hull was estimated by numerical analysis. The direction of the grid was changed according to the heading angle to consider waves in multiple directions. In addition, the method in which the entire domain moved along the movement of the hull was used without using the overset method to minimize the numerical errors. The added resistance and motion RAOs for each angle and the flow characteristics were compared to support the results. For fluid dynamics, time-averaged stern dynamics pressure, boundary layer, and nominal wake for each heading angle were compared, and differences compared to calm water were also reviewed. Based on the bow quartering sea condition analysis results, the added resistance in long-crested and short-crested irregular wave conditions was estimated using the spectral method. The JONSWAP spectrum was used as the target wave spectrum, and the cos-power type was considered the directional spreading function.

Abstract

There are three different well-known methods for predicting the manoeuvrability of ships: (1) free running model test, (2) direct manoeuvring simulation using CFD and (3) system-based manoeuvring simulation. In this paper, the manoeuvrability of the KVLCC2 was estimated using CFD with rigid body motion and body force propeller method. The free running manoeuvre at the different time steps were also simulated. The yaw checking ability and the turning ability of KVLCC2 were predicted using CFD and could have been confirmed that the IMO criteria was satisfied. When the results were compared with the model test and system-based method, the free running simulation showed better agreement to that of the model test. It could also be confirmed that the results vary depending on the time step. Overall, the CFD results using the body force propeller method estimated most accurately the test results.

Abstract

Although shipping was not included in the final text of the Paris Agreement in 2015, IMO (International Maritime Organization) adopted the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index) and the EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator) to control climate change and also to reduce gas emission from ships. Accurate prediction of added resistance in waves is essential to evaluate the minimum fuel consumption of a ship in a real sea state. In this paper, the added resistance and motions of a KCS (KRISO Container Ship) with rudder were calculated using a commercial CFD program, STAR-CCM+. Wave forcing was used to generate the waves in the numerical domain, in which no extra wave generation and damping zones were produced. DFBI (Dynamic Fluid Body Interaction) was used for the motions of the KCS with rudder. In this study, five (5) regular head waves from a short wavelength to a long wavelength based on the LPP were considered. Finally, added resistance and the heave and pitch motions of the simulation were compared with experimental data. Simulation and experimental data were in qualitatively and quantitatively good agreement.

6. Electrochemically active porous carbon nanospheres prepared by inhibition of pyrolytic condensation of polymers

Abstract

Porous carbon is a pivotal material for electrochemical applications. The manufacture of porous carbon has relied on chemical treatments (etching or template) that require processing in all areas of the carbon/carbon precursor. We present a unique approach to preparing porous carbon nanospheres by inhibiting the pyrolytic condensation of polymers. Specifically, the porous carbon nanospheres are obtained by coating a thin film of ZnO on polystyrene spheres. The porosity of the porous carbon nanospheres is controlled by the thickness of the ZnO shell, achieving a BET-specific area of 1,124 m 2 /g with a specific volume of 1.09 cm 3 /g. We confirm that under the support force by the ZnO shell, a hierarchical pore structure in which small mesopores are connected by large mesopores is formed and that the pore-associated sp 3 defects are enriched. These features allow full utilization of the surface area of the carbon pores. The electrochemical capacitive performance of porous carbon nanospheres was evaluated, achieving a high capacitance of 389 F/g at 1 A/g, capacitance retention of 71% at a 20-fold increase in current density, and stability up to 30,000 cycles. In particular, we achieve a specific area-normalized capacitance of 34.6 μF/cm 2 , which overcomes the limitations of conventional carbon materials.

Abstract

Thin-film micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) with high areal capacitance are in great demand due to their wide application in ultra-compact energy storage devices. Carbon electrodes coated with high pseudocapacitance materials have typically been applied, but the increased resistance and pulverization by the pseudocapacitive materials still require improvement. To tackle this issue, we present a 3D bicontinuous structure of the pseudocapacitive shell and carbon core. Specifically, the 3D carbon structure is fabricated using multibeam interference lithography, and conformal thin layers of MnO2 or polyaniline (PANI) are obtained by electrodeposition. This electrode maintains a monolithic carbon conductive structure, even with a pseudocapacitance material coating. The conformal pseudocapacitive shell exhibits low resistance and structural integrity in redox reactions. MnO2– or PANI–carbon electrode MSCs achieve areal capacitance of 4.93 or 26.4 mF cm–2, respectively. The highest areal energy density of 3.67 μW h cm–2 is obtained for the PANI–carbon electrode MSC. This value is superior to the values achieved in recent thin-film MSCs, which demonstrates the advantages of 3D bicontinuous structures.

15. Full lithographic fabrication of boron-doped 3D porous carbon patterns for high volumetric energy density microsupercapacitors

Abstract

Carbon electrodes that are thick and maintain a high volumetric energy density are essential for high energy storage microsupercapacitors (MSCs). Here, fabrication of an electrode based on a boron-doped 3D porous carbon pattern (B-3D-PCP) by lithographic processes is demonstrated. The B-3D-PCP is obtained by carbonization and doping of a polymer pattern fabricated by interference lithography. Then, plasma etching is performed on the B-3D-PCP to obtain an interdigitated electrode, and a polymer electrolyte is applied to complete the MSC. The B-3D-PCP shows remarkably high pseudocapacitance after B-doping. This electrode also exhibits no capacitance loss when the electrode width increases, even at very high scan rates, owing to the uniform pores of the 3D-PCP. The solid-state B-3D-PCP MSC with a polymer gel electrolyte shows a capacitance of 7.1 mF/cm 2 , with a remarkable capacitance retention of 81%, especially upon a scan rate increase of 10 times at 100 mV. With B-3D-PCP MSCs, a volumetric energy density of 7.1 mWh/cm 3 and a volumetric power density of 66 W/cm 3 could be achieved. Finally, the performance of the MSC is demonstrated by using it to power various electronic devices. The results suggest a new electrode for the MSC that overcomes the performance limitations of conventional electrodes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Patients with peripheral artery disease have an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Antiplatelet agents are widely used to reduce these complications.METHODS: This was a multicentre, double-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trial for which patients were recruited at 602 hospitals, clinics, or community practices from 33 countries across six continents. Eligible patients had a history of peripheral artery disease of the lower extremities (previous peripheral bypass surgery or angioplasty, limb or foot amputation, intermittent claudication with objective evidence of peripheral artery disease), of the carotid arteries (previous carotid artery revascularisation or asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis of at least 50%), or coronary artery disease with an ankle-brachial index of less than 0·90. After a 30-day run-in period, patients were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to receive oral rivaroxaban (2·5 mg twice a day) plus aspirin (100 mg once a day), rivaroxaban twice a day (5 mg with aspirin placebo once a day), or to aspirin once a day (100 mg and rivaroxaban placebo twice a day). Randomisation was computer generated. Each treatment group was double dummy, and the patient, investigators, and central study staff were masked to treatment allocation. The primary outcome was cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction or stroke; the primary peripheral artery disease outcome was major adverse limb events including major amputation. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01776424, and is closed to new participants.FINDINGS: Between March 12, 2013, and May 10, 2016, we enrolled 7470 patients with peripheral artery disease from 558 centres. The combination of rivaroxaban plus aspirin compared with aspirin alone reduced the composite endpoint of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke (126 [5%] of 2492 vs 174 [7%] of 2504; hazard ratio [HR] 0·72, 95% CI 0·57-0·90, p=0·0047), and major adverse limb events including major amputation (32 [1%] vs 60 [2%]; HR 0·54 95% CI 0·35-0·82, p=0·0037). Rivaroxaban 5 mg twice a day compared with aspirin alone did not significantly reduce the composite endpoint (149 [6%] of 2474 vs 174 [7%] of 2504; HR 0·86, 95% CI 0·69-1·08, p=0·19), but reduced major adverse limb events including major amputation (40 [2%] vs 60 [2%]; HR 0·67, 95% CI 0·45-1·00, p=0·05). The median duration of treatment was 21 months. The use of the rivaroxaban plus aspirin combination increased major bleeding compared with the aspirin alone group (77 [3%] of 2492 vs 48 [2%] of 2504; HR 1·61, 95% CI 1·12-2·31, p=0·0089), which was mainly gastrointestinal. Similarly, major bleeding occurred in 79 (3%) of 2474 patients with rivaroxaban 5 mg, and in 48 (2%) of 2504 in the aspirin alone group (HR 1·68, 95% CI 1·17-2·40; p=0·0043).INTERPRETATION: Low-dose rivaroxaban taken twice a day plus aspirin once a day reduced major adverse cardiovascular and limb events when compared with aspirin alone. Although major bleeding was increased, fatal or critical organ bleeding was not. This combination therapy represents an important advance in the management of patients with peripheral artery disease. Rivaroxaban alone did not significantly reduce major adverse cardiovascular events compared with asprin alone, but reduced major adverse limb events and increased major bleeding.FUNDING: Bayer AG.

Abstract

Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) are attractive for applications in next-generation mobile and wearable devices and have the potential to complement or even replace lithium batteries. However, many previous MSCs have often exhibited a low volumetric energy density with high-loading electrodes because of the nonuniform pore structure of the electrodes. To address this issue, we introduced a uniform-pore carbon electrode fabricated by 3D interference lithography. Furthermore, a hierarchical pore-patterned carbon (hPC) electrode was formed by introducing a micropore by chemical etching into the macropore carbon skeleton. The hPC electrodes were applied to solid-state MSCs. We achieved a constant volumetric capacitance and a corresponding volumetric energy density for electrodes of various thicknesses. The hPC MSC reached a volumetric energy density of approximately 1.43 mW h/cm3. The power density of the hPC MSC was 1.69 W/cm3. We could control the capacitance and voltage additionally by connecting the unit MSC cells in series or parallel, and we confirmed the operation of a light-emitting diode. We believe that our pore-patterned electrodes will provide a new platform for compact but high-performance energy storage devices.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and is a consequence of acute thrombotic events involving activation of platelets and coagulation proteins. Factor Xa inhibitors and aspirin each reduce thrombotic events but have not yet been tested in combination or against each other in patients with stable coronary artery disease.METHODS: In this multicentre, double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, outpatient trial, patients with stable coronary artery disease or peripheral artery disease were recruited at 602 hospitals, clinics, or community centres in 33 countries. This paper reports on patients with coronary artery disease. Eligible patients with coronary artery disease had to have had a myocardial infarction in the past 20 years, multi-vessel coronary artery disease, history of stable or unstable angina, previous multi-vessel percutaneous coronary intervention, or previous multi-vessel coronary artery bypass graft surgery. After a 30-day run in period, patients were randomly assigned (1:1:1) to receive rivaroxaban (2·5 mg orally twice a day) plus aspirin (100 mg once a day), rivaroxaban alone (5 mg orally twice a day), or aspirin alone (100 mg orally once a day). Randomisation was computer generated. Each treatment group was double dummy, and the patients, investigators, and central study staff were masked to treatment allocation. The primary outcome of the COMPASS trial was the occurrence of myocardial infarction, stroke, or cardiovascular death. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01776424, and is closed to new participants.FINDINGS: Between March 12, 2013, and May 10, 2016, 27 395 patients were enrolled to the COMPASS trial, of whom 24 824 patients had stable coronary artery disease from 558 centres. The combination of rivaroxaban plus aspirin reduced the primary outcome more than aspirin alone (347 [4%] of 8313 vs 460 [6%] of 8261; hazard ratio [HR] 0·74, 95% CI 0·65-0·86, pINTERPRETATION: In patients with stable coronary artery disease, addition of rivaroxaban to aspirin lowered major vascular events, but increased major bleeding. There was no significant increase in intracranial bleeding or other critical organ bleeding. There was also a significant net benefit in favour of rivaroxaban plus aspirin and deaths were reduced by 23%. Thus, addition of rivaroxaban to aspirin has the potential to substantially reduce morbidity and mortality from coronary artery disease worldwide.FUNDING: Bayer AG.

20. Highly N-doped microporous carbon nanospheres with high energy storage and conversion efficiency

Abstract

Porous carbon spheres (CSs) have distinct advantages in energy storage and conversion applications. We report the preparation of highly monodisperse N-doped microporous CSs through the carbonization of polystyrene-based polymer spheres and subsequent activation. The N-doped microporous CSs have a remarkably high N-doping content, over 10%, and high BET surface area of 884.9 m2 g−1. We characterize the synergistic effects of the micropores and N doping on the energy storage performance of a supercapacitor electrode consisting of the CSs and on the performance in an electrocatalytic reaction of a CS counter electrode in a photovoltaic cell. The N-doped microporous CSs exhibit a maximum capacitance of 373 F g−1 at a current density of 0.2 Ag−1, a high capacitance retention up to 62% with a 10-fold increase in current density, and excellent stability over 10,000 charge/discharge cycles. A counter electrode consisting of N-doped microporous CSs was found to exhibit superior electrocatalytic behavior to an electrode consisting of conventional Pt nanoparticles. These CSs derived from polymer spheres synthesized by addition polymerization will be new platform materials with high electrochemical performance.

Abstract

This paper presents a high-throughput lowcomplexity decoder architecture and design technique to implement successive-cancellation (SC) polar decoding. A novel merged processing element with a one’s complement scheme, a main frame with optimal internal word length, and optimized feedback part architecture are proposed. Generally, a polar decoder uses a two’s complement scheme in merged processing elements, in which a conversion between two’s complement and sign-magnitude requires an adder. However, the novel merged processing elements do not require an adder. Moreover, in order to reduce hardware complexity, optimized main frame and feedback part approaches are also presented. A (1024, 512) SC polar decoder was designed and implemented using 40-nm CMOS standard cell technology. Synthesis results show that the proposed SC polar decoder can lead to a 13% reduction in hardware complexity and a higher clock speed compared to conventional decoders.

Abstract

This paper presents a low-complexity triple-error-correcting parallel Bose-Chaudhuri- Hocquenghem (BCH) decoder architecture and its efficient design techniques. A novel modified step-by- step (m-SBS) decoding algorithm, which significantly reduces computational complexity, is proposed for the parallel BCH decoder. In addition, a determinant calculator and a error locator are proposed to reduce hardware complexity. Specifically, a sharing syndrome factor calculator and a self-error detection scheme are proposed. The multi-channel multi- parallel BCH decoder using the proposed m-SBS algorithm and design techniques have considerably less hardware complexity and latency than those using a conventional algorithms. For a 16-channel 4- parallel (1020, 990) BCH decoder over GF(2 12 ), the proposed design can lead to a reduction in complexity of at least 23 % compared to conventional architect- tures.

Abstract

In this paper, wave breakers which occur in two dimensional coasts are simulated using a SPH(Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) method which represents the movement of fluidic physical volume with particles. As continuative fluid is approximated to the particles, the simulations are performed using fully Lagrangian method without any grid system. Two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation are used for the numerical simulations. To generate incident waves, a piston type wavemaker is employed. The accuracy of the wave which is numerically generated by the wavemaker is verified by comparing with analytical results. The computations are carried out with various wave heights and slopes. The wave patterns generated through the numerical simulations are compared with several existing experimental and computational results. Agreement between the experimental data and the computation results is comparatively good. Also, the breaker depth index and the breaker height index from the present calculations are compared with the existing experimental results, and the tendency is very similar.

Abstract

The direct pyrolytic carbonisation of polymer patterns has attracted interest for its use in obtaining carbon materials. In the case of carbonisation of nanopatterned polymers, the polymer flow and subsequent pattern change may occur in order to relieve their high surface energies. Here, we demonstrated that liquid immersion thermal crosslinking of polymer nanopatterns effectively enhanced the thermal resistance and maintained the structure integrity during the heat treatment. We employed the liquid immersion thermal crosslinking for 3D porous SU8 photoresist nanopatterns and successfully converted them to carbon nanopatterns while maintaining their porous features. The thermal crosslinking reaction and carbonisation of SU8 nanopatterns were characterised. The micro-crystallinity of the SU8-derived carbon nanopatterns was also characterised. The liquid immersion heat treatment can be extended to the carbonisation of various polymer or photoresist nanopatterns and also provide a facile way to control the surface energy of polymer nanopatterns for various purposes, for example, to block copolymer or surfactant self-assemblies.

Inverse opal (IO) films with mesoporous structures hold promise as high-performance electrodes for various photoelectrochemical devices because of their high specific area as well as their fully connected pore structure. A great challenge to their use is obtaining an intact film of mesoscale colloidal crystals as a template. Here, using the plate-sliding coating method coupled with hot air flow, we successfully deposited mesoscale colloidal crystals onto the substrate. A TiO2 mesoscale IO (meso-IO) with 70 nm pores was then successfully fabricated via atomic layer deposition of TiO2 and subsequent removal of the template. As a photoelectrochemical electrode, the meso-IO structure exhibits enhanced charge transport properties as well as a high specific area. Moreover, dye-sensitized solar cells fabricated using the meso-IO electrode exhibit a higher photocurrent and cell efficiency than a cell constructed using a conventional TiO2 nanoparticle electrode. This meso-IO film provides a new platform for developing electrodes for use in various energy storage and conversion devices.

Abstract

Background and Objectives:The endothelium plays an important role in maintaining vascular tone and function. This essential hypertension may be associated with alterations in endothelial function. The effects of antihypertensive agents on endothelial function have not been fully evaluated in human hypertension and data on the forearm circulation of humans is controversial. The aim of this study was 1 to evaluate endothelial function in hypertensive patients 2 to investigate whether vitamin C administration has a benefit on endothelial function and 3 to determine whether treatment with ACE inhibitor improve improves endothelial dysfunction in hypertensive patients. Materials and Methods:The endothelial function was estimated using venous occlusion plethysmography (VOP in 8 hypertensive patients and 8 healthy volunteers. The patients in the hypertension group were treated with enalapril, then reexamined. The change of forearm blood flow (FBF was measured under conditions of acetylcholine infusion through the brachial artery as well as with intra- arterial vitamin C. The measurement of forearm volume change was repeated 7 times for each stage. Results:The forearm blood flow response to acetylcholine was significantly enhanced with inra-arterial infusion of vitamin C in the hypertensive group before antihypertensive treatment (302±58%→446±43%. Co-infusion of L-NMMA, an inhibitor of nitric oxide synthase, the blunted forearm blood flow response to acetylcholine (Vit C (+; 446±43%→Vit C+L-NMMA;229±23%. Abstract

A 4 × 4 matrix model with three degrees of freedom is proposed as a means for controlling microvibrations and applied to an electromagnetic isolator. The model was derived from an assumption based on small- and low-frequency vibrations. The coordinates of the 3 DOF was composed of the 4 variables, representing a vertical position, pitch, roll, and a proof term. The coordinates were calculated from the 4 position sensors in the isolator and formulated into a 4 × 4 matrix, which possesses inversive full rank. The electro-magnetic isolator was built for a simulated machine in semiconductormanufacturing and consisted of a heavy surface plate, sensors, amps, a controller, and air springs with electromagnets. The electromagnets are installed in a pneumatic chamber of the individual air spring. The performance of the 3 DOF model was experimented and compared with that of a 1 DOF model in an impact test.
