Incident events may occur when nursing students are present in the clinical setting. Their inexperience and unfamiliarity with clinical practice put them at risk for making mistakes that could potentially harm patients and themselves. However, there are deficiencies with incident event reporting systems, including incomplete data and delayed reports. The purpose of this study was to develop an incident event reporting system for nursing students in clinical settings and evaluate its effectiveness. This study was undertaken in three phases. In the first phase, a literature review and focus groups were used to develop the architecture of the reporting system. In the second phase, the reporting system was implemented. Data from incident events that involved nursing students were collected for a 12-month period. In the third phase, a pre-post trial was undertaken to evaluate the performance of the reporting system. The ASP.NET software and Microsoft Access 2003 were used to create an interactive web-based interface and design a database for the reporting system. Email notifications alerted the nursing student's teacher when an incident event was reported. One year after installing the reporting system, the number of reported incident events increased tenfold. However, the time to report the incident event and the time required to complete the reporting procedures were shorter than before implementation of the reporting system. The incident event reporting system appeared to be effective in more comprehensively reporting the number of incident events and shorten the time required for reporting them compared to traditional written reports. Background: Pain records provide important data to medical teams to guide their provision of pain management interventions. Incomplete records and records that do not integrate pain data will affect patient safety. Use of information technology helps facilitate communication within the medical team and improve quality of care., Purpose: This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a pain management information system., Methods: The questionnaire survey method was employed in this study. The system-evaluation questionnaire was designed based on the six dimensions of the information system success model (ISSM), including system quality, information quality, service quality, intention to use, user satisfaction, and net benefits. Three months after the pain management system was implemented, the opinions of 282 nurses from a medical center in central Taiwan were collected. Research data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods., Results: Of the six dimensions, "information quality" received the highest average score (4.71). The two dimensions of "intention to use" and "user satisfaction" had the highest correlation with "net benefits". "User satisfaction" was found to have the highest predictive power for the "net benefits" of the system, with an explanatory power of about 81.2%., Conclusions: The pain management system considered in this study was shown to provide complete and accurate pain management information, which is an important factor affecting nurses' intention to use and satisfaction. The evaluation results based on the ISSM show the pain management system to be a good information system that generates accurate information and has a high intention-to-use rate and high rate of user satisfaction.

Medication errors occur during clinical learning for nursing students. This study aimed to develop learning cases to prevent medication errors using analysis of data from an incident reporting system. This study utilized an action research approach to develop learning cases. These learning cases were implemented with problem-based learning (PBL) method and self-learning materials strategies. The results showed that repeated occurrences of medication errors and near misses were reduced after implementing the new teaching strategy.

Nurses require training to manage extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate intensive care unit nurse needs and design an ECMO simulation learning system. A systemic needs analysis included interviews and a literature review. Nurses had three learning needs: pre-ECMO placement care, daily care during placement, and care for preparation of removal. The system design includes ECMO care knowledge, practice in simulations, and self-examination with a flexible learning methodology.

This study aimed to explore influencing factors and predictive capability for nursing staff use of a pain management system based on the information system success model. There were three key results: (a) Information quality is the most important influencing factor; (b) The correlations between these factors were all positively correlated; (c)Information quality and user satisfaction are the affect factors in predicting net benefits. These results elucidate the relevant factors affecting use of a pain management system by nurses, and can also predict system benefits.

This study explored needs and content of nursing information simulation learning system for different nursing staff levels. A questionnaire survey method was conducted in this study. A total of 300 clinical instructors and new nurses were recruited from a medical center through purposive sampling. The results show the core framework of a learning system includes five objectives. The mean scores of the five objectives of clinical instructors all were higher than the new nurses. These findings can serve as a reference for the design framework and system functions, and will function as an important learning resource.

With the rapid development of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the 21st century, all walks of life have experienced disruptive changes, including the healthcare profession. Although nurses represent the largest number of professionals in medical institutions, it is doubtful whether nurses possess sufficient capabilities to face challenges in this era of rapid medical informatization. Currently, the courses necessary to cultivate information literacy in nursing students are insufficient in Taiwan, and traditional instruction methods are largely adopted as nursing teaching strategies. Additionally, most teachers hold a passive attitude towards the application of ICT in teaching. On the contrary, ICT have been integrated into nursing education in many countries around the world for nearly 20 years, achieving good levels of teaching efficacy. Reflecting the Taiwan government's promotion of digital learning projects, academic circles in various fields have also started to gradually integrate ICT into teaching. Nursing educators in Taiwan have much to reference and to learn from these disparate integration experiences. Therefore, this article introduces the concepts of integration of ICT into teaching, the current status of the application of ICT in international nursing education, and the issues faced during this application as a reference for nursing education in Taiwan in order to promote the integration of ICT into nursing education.

Rapid progress in information and communication technologies and the increasing popularity of healthcare-related applications has increased interest in the topic of intelligent medical care. This topic emphasizes the use of information and communication technologies to collect and analyze a variety of data in order to provide physicians and other healthcare professionals with clinical decision support. At present, so-called smart hospitals are the focal point of most intelligent-systems development activity, with little attention currently being focused on long-term care needs. The present article discusses the application of intelligent systems in the field of long-term care, especially in community and home-based models of care. System-implementation components such as the data entry interface components of mobile devices, the data transmission and synchronization components between the mobile device and file server, the data presentation, and the statistics analysis components are also introduced. These components have been used to develop long-term care service-related applications, including home health nursing, home-care services, meals on wheels, and assistive devices rental. We believe that the findings will be useful for the promotion of innovative long-term care services as well as the improvement of healthcare quality and efficiency.

Nursing records in Taiwan have been computerized, but their quality has rarely been discussed. Therefore, this study employed a text-mining approach and a cross-sectional retrospective research design to evaluate the quality of electronic nursing records at a medical center in Northern Taiwan. SAS Text Miner software Version 13.2 was employed to analyze unstructured nursing event records. The results show that SAS Text Miner is suitable for developing a textmining model for validating nursing records. The sensitivity of SAS Text Miner was approximately 0.94, and the specificity and accuracy were 0.99. Thus, SAS Text Miner software is an effective tool for auditing unstructured electronic nursing records.

Peritoneal dialysis management system (PDS) is special design system to integrate all dialysis-related information for PD case managers. This study aims to investigate the impact of peritoneal dialysis system (PDS) implementation on the work efficacy of PD case managers. This study carried out in the PD unit of medical center in northern Taiwan. We utilized work sampling and chart reviews to compare the changes of work efficacy of PD case managers before and 3 months after PDS implementation. The results of this study showed direct care increased to 38.3% while indirect care decreased to 18% and unit-related care to 6.2%. The time spent on the five category activities has statistically significant difference before and after implementation of PDS. The completion rate of records has no statistically significant difference before and after the implementation of PDS. This study demonstrated that PDS implementation significantly affected the care patterns of PD for case managers.

This study investigated the major NIS implementation factors and their capability of predicting the effectiveness of NIS implementation by using the clinical information systems success model. The triangulation method was employed in this study. A total of 348 nurses were recruited from regional hospitals in two districts of Taipei through purposive sampling. Research data were collected through questionnaires and focus group interviews 3 and 6 months after an NIS was implemented at their hospital. The result show the explanatory power of use dependence, use satisfaction, and net benefits in predicting NIS effectiveness was approximately 64.5%-89.4%. The explanatory power of net benefits in predicting NIS effectiveness after 3 and 6 months exceeded 80%. The nurses reported that NIS implementation changed their workflow and positively influenced medication administration safety. This study empirically identified the critical factors that affect the successful implementation of NISs and reported the nurses' experience of NIS use.

The traditional "teacher-centered" instruction model is still currently pervasive in nursing education. However, this model does not stimulate the critical thinking or foster the self-learning competence of students. In recent years, the rapid development of information technology and the changes in educational philosophy have encouraged the development of the "flipped classroom" concept. This concept completely subverts the traditional instruction model by allowing students to access and use related learning activities prior to class on their smartphones or tablet computers. Implementation of this concept has been demonstrated to facilitate greater classroom interaction between teachers and students, to stimulate student thinking, to guide problem solving, and to encourage cooperative learning and knowledge utilization in order to achieve the ideal of student-centered education. This student-centered model of instruction coincides with the philosophy of nursing education and may foster the professional competence of nursing students. The flipped classroom is already an international trend, and certain domestic education sectors have adopted and applied this concept as well. However, this concept has only just begun to make its mark on nursing education. This article describes the concept of the flipped classroom, the implementation myth, the current experience with implementing this concept in international healthcare education, and the challenging issues. We hope to provide a reference for future nursing education administrators who are responsible to implement flipped classroom teaching strategies in Taiwan.

Electronic medical record exchanges can save time and reduce cost by eliminating redundant data and typing errors. The major steps of record exchange consist of querying information from database, encoding data into messages, and sending and decoding messages. Three medical-record-exchange models were proposed in the past, including the distributed, centralized, and indexed models. In this paper, the queuing theory is applied to evaluate the performance of the three models. We estimate the service time for each queue of the CPU, database and network, and predict the response time, probable bottlenecks and system capacities of each model.
