An enigmatic conjecture in network synthesis asserts that the the uniformly most reliable multigraphs are simple. Daniel Gross and John Saccoman proved in 1998 that the answer is affirmative whenever m ≤ n + 2, where n and m is the respective number of nodes and edges of the multigraphs. They conjectured that the optimality is also achieved by simple graphs when m = n + 3. A proof for this conjecture recently appeared. In this article we provide a unified short proof for the previous cases where m ≤ n + 3. Our proof strategy holds whenever the most reliable simple graphs satisfy the self similarity property. As a consequence, it could be used to study the general multigraph conjecture for larger graph classes. Agencia Nacional de Investigación e Innovación

The INQUA Dunes Atlas project has developed a global digital database of chronological information for periods of inland or continental sand dune accumulation and stabilization. The database comprises information on the site location (including coordinates), dune type, and stratigraphic context, pertinent analytical information (e.g. luminescence procedures), and literature citations to the original data source. This paper discusses the background to the project, the concept and structure of the chronologic database that forms its core, and gives some examples of the scope of the database and ways in which it can contribute to greater understanding of the spatial and temporal variability in dune development. La velocidad con la que se genera información y el fácil acceso que existe hoy en día a muchas fuentes de información, precipita la obsolescencia del conocimiento adquirido en detrimento del nuevo. Muchos sistemas educativos no han sido ajenos a esta realidad y han adaptado las metodologías pedagógicas para incluir la educación por competencias. Estas son el conjunto de habilidades que engloban conocimientos conceptuales, actitudinales y procedimentales que permiten enfrentarse a los retos diarios con efectividad. Estas competencias evolucionan y se van añadiendo nuevas teniendo en cuenta las necesidades de cada momento, es en este sentido que cobra fuerza la idea de varios países de incluir el Pensamiento Computacional como competencia ya que esta comprende herramientas muy importantes para el aprendizaje de la ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas, que utiliza la programación como medio. Con el objetivo de promover estas competencias, Plan Ceibal en 2017 comenzó un programa piloto con 33 escuelas y en 2021 ya participaban en el programa (voluntario) casi el 54% de escuelas públicas urbanas. En este sentido, se considera importante evaluar el desempeño de los estudiantes en Pensamiento Computacional, y por falta de instrumentos de medida estandarizados se empezó el proceso de creación y validación de un instrumento de medida estandarizado en formato de videojuego. Este trabajo pretende presentar los avances en la generación del videojuego. De este objetivo general se desprenden los siguientes objetivos específicos: 1. Operacionalizar los componentes que conforman el Pensamiento computacional. 2. Decidir qué componentes resultan medibles teniendo en cuenta el formato de la evaluación. 3. Which is the most reliable graph with n nodes and m edges? This celebrated problem has several aspects, according to the notion of optimality (in a local or uniform sense), failure type (either nodes or edges), or reliability model (all-terminal connectedness, two-terminal or multiterminal setting). This article presents a chronological survey of the multiple proposals to address the problem, together with recent trends and enigmatic conjectures posed decades ago that promote further research. Hydrogen storage in metal hydrides presents distinct challenges which encourage the study of effective heat management strategies. Hydrogen absorption in metal hydrides is an exothermic reaction, consequently the generated heat must be removed effectively to achieve the desired performance. This work presents a mathematical model describing the adsorption of hydrogen in La Ni4.7Co0.3 metal hydride as a storage material. Heat and mass transfer effects are modeled in detail. The effect of heat transfer coefficient is also estimated. Besides, a heat transfer fluid for cooling is incorporated to the model. The problem is mathematically formulated presenting a numerical simulation of a design of a cylindrical tank for hydrogen storage. The alloy is studied by using pressure-composition-temperature curves which are carried out at different temperatures. Thermodynamic parameters and hydrogen storage capacity are determined. For isotherm's kinetics, the Jonhson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolomogorov model is used, from which the kinetic constant of the hydriding process is determined. Agencia Nacional de Investigación e Innovación

En Uruguay y mundialmente los jóvenes expresan bajo interés por la ciencia y las tecnologías, y se trata entonces, de renovar la educación científica para revertirlo y promover el desarrollo de la cultura científica ciudadana para el desarrollo sostenible. El principal objetivo de este proyecto, desarrollado por un equipo interinstitucional, multidisciplinario e internacional, fue promover el desarrollo de competencias de pensamiento crítico en estudiantes de las modalidades presencial y semipresencial de profesorado del CFE, potenciar la apropiación de tecnologías de bajo costo y código abierto como recursos educativos en el aula, y promover la creatividad e innovación. Se utilizó un diseño cuasi-experimental pre-test/post-test con grupo control. En el primer año se trabajó en un espacio de laboratorio físico de CFE que se equipó con tecnologías de bajo costo (MIT Little Devices Lab) y posteriormente cortadora laser, una impresora 3D, equipos de código abierto y de bajo costo de microscopía (Foldscope Instruments) y electrofisiología (Backyard Brains), herramientas e insumos de electrónica y robótica, laptop, impresora, cañón de proyección y microscopio de campo claro equipado con cámara digital. En el segundo año se desarrolló y trabajó en un laboratorio virtual interactivo de ciencias vivas que posibilitó la continuidad de la actividad práctica durante la pandemia por SARS-CoV-2. Está formado por dos estaciones experimentales descargables - Fisiología y Biología Celular- que simulan la generación de datos, que pueden ser almacenados, procesados o exportados, y una guía de recursos didácticos, disponibles en repositorio de CFE (http://repositorio.cfe.edu.uy/handle/123456789/1632). No se encontraron cambios significativos en destrezas de pensamiento crítico, probablemente debido al bajo n logrado y los trabajos-reportes elaborados por los estudiantes revelaron tanto fortalezas como debilidades. Se considera que los recursos físicos y virtuales desarrollados podrán apoyar la educación formal, no formal e informal de las ciencias y contribuir al ODS #4. Las técnicas de aprendizaje federado tienen como objetivo entrenar y construir modelos de aprendizaje automático basados en conjuntos de datos distribuidos a través de múltiples dispositivos evitando la fuga de datos. La idea principal es realizar el entrenamiento en dispositivos remotos o centros de datos aislados sin transferir los datos a repositorios centralizados, mitigando así los riesgos para la privacidad. La analítica de datos en la educación, en particular la analítica del aprendizaje, es un escenario prometedor para aplicar este enfoque con el fin de hacer frente a las cuestiones legales y éticas relacionadas con el tratamiento de datos sensibles. En efecto, dada la naturaleza de los datos que se van a estudiar (datos personales, resultados educativos, datos relativos a menores), es esencial asegurarse de que la realización de estos estudios y la publicación de los resultados ofrezcan las garantías necesarias para proteger la privacidad de las personas implicadas y la protección de sus datos. Además, la aplicación de técnicas cuantitativas basadas en la explotación de datos sobre el uso de plataformas educativas, rendimiento de los alumnos, uso de dispositivos, etc., puede dar cuenta de problemas educativos como la determinación de perfiles de usuarios, trayectorias de aprendizaje personalizadas, o indicadores y alertas de abandono temprano, entre otros. Este trabajo presenta los resultados del proyecto de investigación "Uso de técnicas de Aprendizaje Federado para el análisis de datos sensibles: aplicación al caso de Analíticas de Aprendizaje" financiado por la ANII (FMV_3_2020_1_162910 ), y en particular la aplicación de técnicas de aprendizaje federado a dos problemas de learning analytics: la predicción del abandono escolar y la clasificación no supervisada de estudiantes. Los experimentos permiten concluir que las soluciones propuestas alcanzan resultados comparables desde el punto de vista del rendimiento con las versiones centralizadas sin centralizar los datos para el entrenamiento de los modelos. En este proyecto nos propusimos avanzar de celdas solares innovadoras, con el cruce tecnológico de las DSSCs y las HCSCs, en donde se aproveche el bajo costo de preparación de las primeras, con las ventajas de las segundas, que permitan incrementar sus eficiencias de conversión de energía. En ese sentido, se realizaron estudios de preparación, caracterización estructural y estudios de propiedades ópticas y eléctricas de nanomateriales basados en titanatos decorados con puntos cuánticos inorgánicos [quantum dots de CuInS2 (CIS-QDs)] y orgánicos [quantum dots de grafeno (GQDs)]. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que estos materiales son muy promisorios para continuar desarrollando celdas solares utilizando este tipo de tecnología. El Uruguay transita cambios en el uso del suelo, la utilización de bienes y servicios provistos por la naturaleza, así como en los sistemas de gestión y gobernanza asociados. La expansión e intensificación de la agricultura y de las explotaciones forestales, junto a la intensificación ganadera durante los últimos 15 años, han condicionado importantes desafíos en la gestión del agua. Simultáneamente, la gestión de los recursos acuáticos procura superar la fragmentación en el análisis y toma de decisiones, avanzando hacia modelos más integrales, con mayor capacidad de aprendizaje y manejo de la incertidumbre. En este contexto, el proyecto procuró fortalecer los procesos de análisis y toma de decisión a través de la recopilación y construcción de bases de datos sobre atributos hidrológicos y de calidad del agua de estaciones de mues- treos localizados en el territorio nacional, así como diversas características de las cuencas de drenaje asociadas (tamaño de las cuencas, topografía, red de tributarios, tipo y usos del suelo, cobertura de pastizales y formaciones boscosas, vertidos puntuales, entre otros). Mediante la combinación de la teledetección, sistemas de información geográfico y técnicas estadísticas se identificaron los principales factores naturales y de origen antrópico que condicionan las diferencias espaciales observadas en atributos claves tanto de cantidad como de calidad. En este proceso se relevaron las principales fortalezas y debilidades del sistema de monitoreo actual, así como posibles estrategias de fortalecimiento en un escenario de cooperación interinstitucional e internivel de gobierno, combinando estrategias de descentralización y centralización, fomentando una estructura en red de capacidades de monitoreo, fiscalización y contralor distribuidas en el territorio. Los aportes del proyecto son insumos para un proceso de co-diseño de estrategias a definir en la red de actores del sistema actual de gobernanza del agua, proceso que se encuentra en pleno desarrollo. A kraft pulp mill that operated in Pictou (KPMP), Nova Scotia for more than 50 years is considered a major source of environmental pollution, although its air emissions have not been widely studied. To address this gap, this research compares air releases from the KPMP with other industrial facilities releases and with regulations. A comparison between nine different pulp and/or paper mills in Atlantic Canada between 2002-2019 suggested that pulp mills emit higher pollutant loads than those producing paper and that the highest release was fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from the KPMP. The KPMP releases were also 10 and 1000 times the releases of a tire manufacturing facility and a coal-fired power plant nearby, and results suggest that the KPMP was likely the primary source for high PM2.5 concentrations in Pictou. Air quality PM2.5 management levels in Pictou became green following the installation of a precipitator by the KPMP in 2015. Immobilization of TiO2-P-25 nanoparticles on low-density polyethylene films (LDPE) was successfully achieved through a simple and facile photocatalytic procedure leading to the polymer surface functionalization (generating -C = O species) by TiO2 photo-induced •OH radicals. A systematic study through a response surface methodology (RSM) of type central composite experimental design (DCC)-23 in 3 blocks to find optimal conditions of irradiation time, pH and P-25 amounts was performed. It was found that circumneutral pH (5.0), low amounts of P-25 nanoparticles (0.4 g L-1) and irradiation times of 5 h (LDPE-P25-5 films) may be the best immobilization conditions. This was confirmed by SEM-EDS micrographs and AFM images. LDPE-P25-5 films exhibited the best photocatalytic activity removing malachite green and it was also observed an interesting UV-A photo-induced super hydrophilicity since angle contact dropped from 118 to 4° after 60 min of UV-A irradiation. Furthermore, LDPE-P25-5 film kept its photoinduced self-cleaning properties after 4 reusing cycles (8 h of continuous UV-A + visible irradiation). These findings suggest that this simple and facile photocatalytic procedure may allow the preparation of TiO2-polymeric films with interesting properties to be applied as photoinduced self-cleaning surfaces. El Cuaternario se ha caracterizado por constantes fluctuaciones climáticas, alternando entre glaciaciones y períodos cálidos (interglaciares). Las unidades cuaternarias continentales de Uruguay consideradas en este proyecto (Formaciones Sopas y Dolores) contienen dentro de su registro fósil moluscos y xenartros (ambos con representantes en la fauna actual),además de una extensa fauna de otros vertebrados, plantas, icnofósiles y microfósiles. El estudio de los ensambles de moluscos fósiles continentales (terrestres y dulceacuícolas) tienen una amplia aplicación como indicadores paleoclimáticos y paleoecológicos, permitiendo realizar reconstrucciones paleoambientales muy precisas. Además, los moluscos dulceacuícolas incorporan carbonato de calcio (CaCO3) en equilibrio con el ambiente, el análisis de isótopos estables en moluscos fósiles permite reconstruir la temperatura al momento de la vida del organismo. Algo similar ocurre con los mamíferos, pero en este caso, es la incorporación de carbonatos a través de la dieta lo que permite reconstruir además de la preferencia alimenticia, el ambiente asociado a los organismos, a partir de la identificación de plantas de tipo C3 (mayoría de plantas) y C4 (aquellas que habitan ambientes preferentemente abiertos). Entonces, el objetivo general de este proyecto es establecer la variación de parámetros climáticos y ecológicos a lo largo del Cuaternario continental de Uruguay a partir de las asociaciones de fósiles, usando para ello sus características ecológicas y el análisis de isótopos estables, comparando de estos últimos, los resultados de moluscos y xenartros entre sí, y asimismo estableciendo una relación de cuál de los dos proxies es más adecuado para la reconstrucción paleoambiental, o si ambos resultados son complementarios, cosa que a la fecha no se ha realizado. Sus conclusiones brindarán datos acerca de cómo puede ser afectada la fauna actual en caso de cambios climáticos futuros. Agencia Nacional de Investigación e Innovación

The complete optimization of fuel cell´s performance involves the prediction of its operation conditions and electrochemical characteristics for short and long-time periods. One of the topics not studied in detail is the change in the surface morphology of metallic catalytic layers as a time-dependent function of the fuel cell working conditions. For single platinum catalysts a columnar growth is demonstrated after 1 month of hydrogen/oxygen continuous operation at the plateau, where electrochemical distributions of smooth surfaces are not operative. Since they act as a completely dynamic system, numerical solutions are not useful as they permanently need parametric profile optimizations. The employ of exact analytical functions instead, reduces large computational times and assures this information only knowing the final structure morphology. In this sense we encouraged current, concentration and potential shapes for these columnar electrodes adapting mass balance differential equations with a parametric profile to model these columns (trochoid curvilinear contours). The analytical solutions were compared with those of a smooth surface (early uses of the fuel cell) and with experimental values obtained using a home-made hydrogen/oxygen polymeric membrane cell. One of the problems in the optimization of a fuel cell performance is the operation prediction for short and long-time behaviours. The employ of exact analytical functions for picturing the distribution of potential and current densities in 2D polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells, generalizes the study and reduces large computational times for each experimental situation. Therefore, we foresee analytical solutions for mass balance equations using the asymptotic velocity equations (normal and tangential coordinates) to obtain a 2D concentration, current and overpotential profiles for smooth platinum catalysts. Dimensionless numbers are deduced, i.e. Wagner, Damkoehler and Graetz to characterize the fuel cell performance, first with a 1D approach and also along 2D coordinates. Besides, the complete polarization curve is predicted comparing the theoretical results with the proper variations of electrochemical magnitudes in a single home-made hydrogen/oxygen 200 cm2 polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell. Previous studies have found that English speakers experience attraction effects when comprehending subject–verb agreement, showing eased processing of ungrammatical sentences that contain a syntactically unlicensed but number-matching noun. In four self-paced reading experiments we examine whether attraction effects also occur in Spanish, a language where agreement morphology is richer and functionally more significant. We find that despite having a richer morphology, Spanish speakers show reliable attraction effects in comprehension, and that these effects are strikingly similar to those previously found in English in their magnitude and distributional profile. Further, we use distributional analyses to argue that cue-based memory retrieval is used as an error-driven mechanism in comprehension. We suggest that cross-linguistic similarities in agreement attraction result from speakers deploying repair or error-driven mechanisms uniformly across languages. Fil: Lago, Sol. The synthesis of cyclotetrapeptides analogues of the natural productos tentoxin and versicotide D, was achieved in good yield by solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) of their linear precursors and solution phase cyclization. All the cyclopeptides and several open precursors were evaluated as herbicides. Five cyclopeptides and five lineal peptides showed a significant inhibition (> 70 %) of Rye grass seed’s radicle growth at 67 μg/mL. The evaluation at lower concentration (4-11 M), indicates two cyclopeptides analogs of tentoxin, which present one (N-Methyl-D-Phe), and two NMe -AA (N-Methyl-Ala and N-Methyl-Phe), respectively, as the most active of them showing remarkable phytotoxic activity. In two cases the open precursors are as active as their corresponding cyclopeptide. However, many linear peptides are inactive and their cyclization derivatives showed herbicidal activity. In addition, two cyclopeptide analogues of versicotide D, showed improved activity than the natural product. The results indicate that the peptide sequence, the amino acid stereochemistry and the presence of N-methyl group have important influence on the phytotoxic activity. Las abejas melíferas son organismos sociales y esta vida en sociedad implica división de tareas a distintos niveles. Uno de esos niveles se da en abejas obreras: abejas jóvenes realizan actividades de limpieza y cuidado del nido, mientras que las abejas mayores salen al campo en búsqueda de alimento. Uno de esos alimentos es el polen, principal fuente de proteínas y lípidos. Esta nutrición basada en el consumo de polen afecta la transición de tareas. Además, estudios basados en el consumo de polen demuestran su efecto sobre la inmunidad aunque otros factores presentes en el polen como su comunidad bacteriana o la presencia de pesticidas también tendrían efecto inmunomodulatorio. El objetivo del proyecto consistió en estudiar la relación entre la nutrición de las abejas, la transición de tareas y su sistema inmune. Tres grupos de colonias de abejas se alimentaron con una dieta sintética conteniendo los aminoácidos, aminoácidos y lípidos o se mantuvieron como control (sin suplementación). Todas las colonias se mantuvieron en carpas sin acceso al exterior para evitar el efecto de otras variables potencialmente asociadas a la modulación del sistema inmune y considerar únicamente el efecto de los aminoácidos y lípidos. Se analizó la expresión génica de abejas de 7 días y 14 días de edad, etapa promedio de transición dependiendo de la dieta recibida. En estas condiciones experimentales, el sistema inmune de las abejas no se vio afectado por la dieta recibida. Sin embargo, abejas que no recibieron suplementación nutricional mostraron una mayor expresión de genes vinculados a la transición de tareas, es decir que esas abejas estaban envejeciendo precozmente. Los resultados obtenidos contribuyen a comprender el efecto de la nutrición en la fisiología de las abejas y constituyen un primer abordaje para considerar aquellos elementos necesarios a incluir en suplementos nutricionales diseñados para abejas. The first total synthesis of cyclopeptides versicotide E and F, natural products produced by marine fungus Aspergillus versicolor LZD-14-1, was achieved in good yield by solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) of their linear precursors and solution phase cyclization. All the versicotides A-F were evaluated as herbicides and inhibitors of cyanobacterial growth. Versicotides A, B, D, E and F showed a significant inhibition of Rye grass seed’s radicle growth at a concentration of 67µg/mL. Versicotides A, B and D also inhibited seed germination and leaf development. On the other hand, Versicotides D and F caused a relevant reduction on Microcystis aeruginosa population when cultures on exponential growth were incubated with 40 µg/mL solutions of these compounds. Evaluation of the concentration of microcystins after these treatments showed that versicotide D inhibited the production of microcystins in a comparable extent to the positive control, colistine. These results indicate versicotides, with versicotides D and F as top hits, could be considered as lead candidates in the development of bioherbicides able to mitigate the environmental impact that the evolution of agriculture has had on water quality. Agriculture and forestry residues are potential sources of sustainable energy that do not compete with food or demand land use changes. Small-scale biomass gasification could be used to generate decentralized renewable electricity where these biomass stocks are locally available, while co-producing biochar to sequester carbon. This study evaluated how the scale and the syngas-biochar trade-offs impact the economics and decarbonization potential of a gasification system. A small-scale downdraft gasifier fed with logging residues in Michigan was used as case study. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach was used to formulate Economic Benefit (EB) and Carbon Abatement (CA) objective functions that formed a Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) problem. Feasible product mix and scale configurations were mapped, and a pareto frontier was identified. EB is maximized when the electricity generation and the scale are maximized, at expense of emitting 1.683 kg CO2eq/kWh. Conversely, CA is maximized to 0.348 kg CO2eq abated per kWh for the highest biochar production and the smallest scale. Results were found to be sensitive to external factors: EB optimum shifted to maximize biochar when the carbon price was increased from 5 $/ton CO2eq to match the social cost of carbon (50 $/ton CO2eq) and 2030 projections (100 $/ton CO2eq), CA increased 112.0% when grid electricity emissions were increased from 0.48 kg CO2eq/kWh (Michigan’s) to 0.87 kg CO2eq/kWh (West Virignia’s), and EB reached 0.147 $/kWh when a high electricity price of 33 ¢/kWh (Hawaii’s) is considered instead of Michigan’s 13 ¢/kWh. For different stakeholders and contexts, the maximization of positive impacts can require different technology configurations. The developed LCA-MCDA combined methodology provides an example of a framework that could inform decision-making in the deployment of biomass gasification to reconcile economic and climate change mitigation objectives. This paper presents a novel on-the-fly, black-box, property-checking through learning approach as a means for verifying requirements of recurrent neural networks (RNN) in the context of sequence classification. Our technique steps on a tool for learning probably approximately correct (PAC) deterministic finite automata (DFA). The sequence classifier inside the black-box consists of a Boolean combination of several components, including the RNN under analysis together with requirements to be checked, possibly modeled as RNN themselves. On one hand, if the output of the algorithm is an empty DFA, there is a proven upper bound (as a function of the algorithm parameters) on the probability of the language of the black-box to be nonempty. This implies the property probably holds on the RNN with probabilistic guarantees. On the other, if the DFA is nonempty, it is certain that the language of the black-box is nonempty. This entails the RNN does not satisfy the requirement for sure. In this case, the output automaton serves as an explicit and interpretable characterization of the error. Our approach does not rely on a specific property specification formalism and is capable of handling nonregular languages as well. Besides, it neither explicitly builds individual representations of any of the components of the black-box nor resorts to any external decision procedure for verification. This paper also improves previous theoretical results regarding the probabilistic guarantees of the underlying learning algorithm.

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused unprecedented global health and economic crises. Several vaccine approaches and repurposed drugs are currently under evaluation for safety and efficacy. However, none of them have been approved for COVID-19 yet. Meanwhile, several nMAbs targeting SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein are in different stages of development and clinical testing. Preclinical studies have shown that cocktails of potent nMAbs targeting the receptor binding site of SARS-CoV-2, as well as broad-nMAbs targeting conserved regions within the virus spike, might be effective for the treatment and prophylaxis of COVID-19. Currently, several clinical trials have started to test safety, tolerability, PKs and efficacy of these nMAbs. One paramount limitation for the use of nMAbs in clinical settings is the production of large amounts of MAbs and the high costs related to it. Background: Currently approved Alzheimer’s disease medications mainly comprise acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. Many of these inhibitors are either natural compounds or synthetic molecules inspired in natural compounds. Hybrid molecules that can interact with different target sites of the enzyme could lead to the discovery of effective multitarget drugs. Objective: To design, synthesize, and evaluate a series of new aza-resveratrol analogs as in vitro acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase inhibitors. Methods: The synthesis is achieved by a simple and efficient microwave-assisted method, from commercially available starting materials. Compounds are designed as hybrids of an aza-stilbene nucleus (Schiff base) connected to a tertiary amine by a hydrocarbon chain of variable length, designed to interact both with the peripheric anionic site and the catalytic site of the enzyme. Results: All the derivatives inhibit both enzymes in a concentration-dependent manner, acting as moderate to potent cholinesterase inhibitors. The most potent inhibitors are compounds 12b (IC50 = 0.43 μM) and 12a (IC50 = 0.31 μM) for acetyl- and butyrylcholinesterase, respectively. Compounds 12a and 12b also exhibit significant acetylcholinesterase inhibition in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells without cytotoxic properties. Enzyme kinetic studies and molecular modeling reveal that inhibitor 12b targets both the catalytic active site and the peripheral anionic site of acetylcholinesterase what makes it able to modulate the self-induced β-amyloid aggregation. Furthermore, the molecular modeling analysis helps to assess the impact of the linker length in the inhibitory activity of this family of new cholinesterase inhibitors. Conclusion: These compounds have the potential to serve as a dual binding site inhibitor and might provide a useful template for the development of new anti-Alzheimer’s disease agents.

Introduction: The current COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in disastrous human and economic costs, mainly due to the absence of specific treatments to ameliorate the effects of this emerging viral disease. Complementary to immunotherapies, drug repurposing is possibly the best option to arrive at COVID-19 treatments in the mid-term. Areas covered: Repurposing prospects undergoing clinical trials or with some level of evidence emerging from clinical studies are reviewed. Furthermore, we discuss some possible intellectual property and commercial barriers to drug repurposing, and some strategies to facilitate equitable access to incoming therapeutic solutions, highlighting the importance of collaborative drug discovery models. Finally, based on a critical analysis of the available literature about in silico screens against SARS-CoV-2 main protease we illustrate how frequently overconfident conclusions are being drawn in COVID-19 related literature. Expert opinion: Most of the current clinical trials on potential COVID-19 treatments are, in fact, drug repurposing examples. In October 2020, the FDA approved a repurposed antiviral agent, remdesivir, as the first treatment for COVID-19, and it is highly probable that repurposed drugs will be first among incoming approvals against SARS-CoV-2. The implementation of collaborative drug discovery models to address the current emergency should be underlined; hopefully, the present experience will help to consolidate the much-needed collaborative philosophy within the drug discovery community. Considering the high expectations of the whole society regarding approaching therapeutic solutions, the scientific community must be careful not to raise unrealistic expectations. Today more than ever, the conclusions drawn in scientific reports have to be fully supported by the level of evidence, avoiding any sort of unfounded speculation. Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis is a commercially important perciform fish caught as bycatch by trawlers throughout its latitudinal distribution range (from 23° S in Brazil to 47° S in Argentina). It is associated with the catches of Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi and Patagonian red shrimp Pleocticus muelleri in San Matías Gulf (SMG). The main objective of this study was to describe the first data on the growth of this species in SMG and to compare the results with available information for other areas of the Argentine Continental Shelf (ACS). The study was carried out using 294 specimens (196 females, 97 males and one of indeterminate sex) collected over four non-consecutive years from commercial/recreational fishing and during research cruises. The age of individuals was determined by reading and counting opaque-hyaline rings on the sagittae otoliths. The maximum ages observed were 14 years for females and 12 years for males. Growth parameters were estimated using the von Bertalanffy mode. Significant differences in L∞ parameter between sexes were found (L∞ males = 54.58 cm; L∞ females = 78.31 cm, p < 0.05). Consider a graph with perfect nodes but independent edge failures with identical probability ρ. The reliability is the connectedness probability of the random graph. A graph with n nodes and e edges is uniformly optimally reliable (UOR) if it has the greatest reliability among all graphs with the same number of nodes and edges, for all values of ρ. In 1997, Gross and Saccoman proved that the simple UOR graphs for e = n, e = n + 1 and e = n + 2 are also optimal when the classes are extended to include multigraphs [6]. The authors conjectured that the UOR simple graphs for e = n + 3 are optimal in multigraphs as well. A proof of the Gross-Saccoman conjecture is introduced. Plant reproduction is influenced by abiotic resources and biotic mutualistic and antagonistic interactions, which in turn can be affected by anthropogenic disturbances such as increased fire frequency. Because frequent fires deplete soil fertility and thus decrease resource availability for plants, we hypothesize that increased fire frequency decreases specific leaf area (SLA) and reproductive success. In addition, lower SLA levels in frequently burned sites should decrease herbivore damage because of reduced leaf palatability. Finally, increased fire frequency will have stronger negative effects on specialist insects (seed predators) as compared to generalist feeding insects such as herbivores and pollinators, which can have direct consequences on plant reproduction. Through an integrative path analytical approach, we assess fire frequency effects on the reproductive success of two resprouting legumes from the Chaco Serrano (Desmodium uncinatum and Rhynchosia edulis), estimating the relative importance of SLA along with pollination, insect herbivory and seed predation interactions. Increased fire frequency decreased SLA but it did not affect biotic interactions in both plant species, with the exception of increased leaf herbivory in R. edulis. Sexual reproduction of D. uncinatum was reduced in burned sites but it remained similar across burned and unburned sites in R. edulis. Within burned areas, both species efficiently maximized the allocation to reproduction, showing a conservative strategy in the use of resources when SLA levels are extremely low. Decreased plant fecundity, especially in D. uncinatum, is likely to impact on the density and long-term viability of populations growing in anthropogenic high fire frequency areas. The Matusagaratí wetland in the Panamanian Darien is one of the largest and most biologically diverse wetland ecosystems in Central America. Despite this, no hydrological studies have been conducted in the area due to its remoteness and difficult access. The aim of this research is to define the relationship between surface water and groundwater through the field and laboratory data obtained from the first monitoring network installed in the Matusagaratí wetland. Variations registered in the isotopic relationships in surface water and groundwater show that the wetland receives contributions from rainfall as well as fluvial and estuarine water. There are areas of the wetland where one of these sources predominates, and others where they mix. In the wetland sector downstream the Tuira river, the groundwater presents a combination of freshwaters coming from Filo del Tallo and those coming from the Tuira river, whose high salinity reflects the estuary's influence. Meanwhile, in the upstream sector of the wetland, the groundwater is a mixture of river water and rainwater on the river´s levee but behind it, rainwater predominates. In all cases, groundwater has Rare Earth Elements patterns like those of the Tuira river, highlighting the importance of river flooding as a source and support system for the wetland groundwater. Hydrological research such as this, presents a valuable opportunity to provide sound scientific information to promote sustainable management and environmental conservation of this unique wetland that is rapidly being transformed to cattle pasture and palm and rice cultivation. Progesterone (Pg) is a pregnancy-related hormone that prepares the endometrium for the implantation of the fertilized zygote and suppresses myometrial contractility for the maintenance of pregnancy. At high concentrations, it acts as a natural immunosuppressant avoiding the rejection of a half allogeneic foetus. It is the precursor of many other related steroid hormones, but what is its role in the human breast? In this chapter, we will discuss some aspects related to Pg and its role in breast development and in the neoplastic disease. Understanding the mechanisms related to Pginduced effects in the normal and neoplastic mammary gland will light the way to exploit this hormone signalling pathway therapeutically. We will introduce some aspects of the effects of progestins in normal breast development, breast cancer risk and in neoplastic growth, and we will describe ongoing clinical trials in breast cancer using progestins or antiprogestins. The extraordinary maturation in high‐throughput sequencing technologies has revealed the existence of a complex network of transcripts in eukaryotic organisms, including thousands of long noncoding (lnc) RNAs with little or no protein‐coding capacity. Subsequent discoveries have shown that lncRNAs participate in a wide range of molecular processes, controlling gene expression and protein activity though direct interactions with proteins, DNA, or other RNA molecules. While significant advances have been achieved in the understanding of lncRNA biology in the animal kingdom, the functional characterization of plant lncRNAs is still in its infancy and remains a major challenge. In this review, we report emerging functional and mechanistic paradigms of plant lncRNAs and partner molecules and discuss how cutting‐edge technologies may help to identify and classify yet uncharacterized transcripts into functional groups. The South American tetrapod track record is highly diverse and well known mainly from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. To date, many tracksites are known from Bolivia, most studied during the past century. From the Jurassic-Cretaceous La Puerta Formation of the Tunasniyoj locality (Incapampa-Icla syncline) thyreophoran trackways have previously been described. New geological studies related with the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province in Bolivia recognised the track-bearing unit as the Ipaguazú Formation, dated as Late Triassic in age. In this significantly new context, we present here a new track-bearing locality: Ruditayoj, neighbour to Tunasniyoj, near Icla, Chuquisaca, Bolivia. A detailed study of the trackways from this new site allowed new interpretations consistent with the geological context. Hundreds of Brachychirotherium trackways are present at the site with a wide diversity of preservational types. Behavioural issues such as gregariousness and grouping around ponds are suggested. Trackway parameters, track size and shape support large ‘rauisuchid’ or aetosaur pseudosuchian producers. Previous assignations to thyreophoran producers are discussed. This is the first record of Brachychirotherium from Bolivia, filling the lack of information about suchian fossils, well known in other South American sites. Fil: Apesteguía, Sebastián. There is a growing ethical concern in modern society about animals' quality of life. We hypothesize that zoo visitors' perception of zoo animal welfare, particularly in the case of lesser anteaters, changes positively after listening to scientific information. Visitors observing active lesser anteaters in their enclosures at Córdoba Zoo (Argentina) were asked to respond to a questionnaire about animal welfare. The treatment group (T) answered the questionnaire after listening to a brief informative talk based on local scientific studies on lesser anteaters. The control group (C) answered the questionnaire without hearing the informative talk. Visitors (87.2%) considered biological, sanitary, and sociocultural aspects to be necessary conditions for optimum wild zoo-housed animal welfare. The majority of visitors considered that natural surroundings provide the highest level of welfare for wild animals. Visitors in the T group ranked the zoo as providing a higher level of animal welfare than those in group C. In reference to management measurements, the T group agreed on the positive effect of the application of environmental enrichment (Likert Medians: C = 4 and T = 5; p =.0443). On the basis of their perception, most visitors in both groups stated that the lesser anteaters at Córdoba Zoo appeared to be in a good state of welfare. We interpret this as meaning that, what these Córdoba zoo visitors personally perceived while observing the lesser anteaters carried greater weight than what they learned from the informative talk, though the talk did slightly affect their opinion., Fil: Chiapero, Florencia. Nerve-derived human Schwann cell (SC) cultures are irreplaceable models for basic and translational research but their use can be limited due to the risk of fibroblast overgrowth. Fibroblasts are an ill-defined population consisting of highly proliferative cells that, contrary to human SCs, do not undergo senescence in culture. We initiated this study by performing an exhaustive immunological and functional characterization of adult nerve-derived human SCs and fibroblasts to reveal their properties and optimize a protocol of magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS) to separate them effectively both as viable and biologically competent cells. We next used immunofluorescence microscopy imaging, flow cytometry analysis and next generation RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to unambiguously characterize the post-MACS cell products. High resolution transcriptome profiling revealed the identity of key lineage-specific transcripts and the clearly distinct neural crest and mesenchymal origin of human SCs and fibroblasts, respectively. Our analysis underscored a progenitor- or stem cell-like molecular phenotype in SCs and fibroblasts and the heterogeneity of the fibroblast populations. In addition, pathway analysis of RNA-seq data highlighted putative bidirectional networks of fibroblast-to-SC signaling that predict a complementary, yet seemingly independent contribution of SCs and fibroblasts to nerve regeneration. In sum, combining MACS with immunochemical and transcriptomics approaches provides an ideal workflow to exhaustively assess the identity, the stage of differentiation and functional features of highly purified cells from human peripheral nerve tissues. The serotonin type 3 receptor (5-HT 3) is a ligand-gated ion channel that converts the binding of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) into a transient cation current that mediates fast excitatory responses in peripheral and central nervous systems. Information regarding the activation and modulation of the human 5-HT 3 type A receptor has been based only on macroscopic current measurements because of its low ion conductance. By constructing a high-conductance human 5-HT 3A receptor, we here revealed mechanistic information regarding the orthosteric activation by 5-HT and by the partial agonist tryptamine, and the allosteric activation by the terpenoids, carvacrol, and thymol. Terpenoids potentiated macroscopic currents elicited by the orthosteric agonist and directly elicited currents with slow-rising phases and submaximal amplitudes. At the single-channel level, activation by orthosteric and allosteric agonists appeared as openings in quick succession (bursts) that showed no ligand concentration dependence. Bursts were grouped into long-duration clusters in the presence of 5-HT and even longer in the presence of terpenoids, whereas they remained isolated in the presence of tryptamine. Kinetic analysis revealed that allosteric and orthosteric activation mechanisms can be described by the same scheme that includes transitions of the agonist-bound receptor to closed intermediate states before opening (priming). Reduced priming explained the partial agonism of tryptamine; however, equilibrium constants for gating and priming were similar for 5-HT and terpenoid activation. Thus, our kinetic analysis revealed that terpenoids are efficacious agonists for 5-HT 3A receptors. These findings not only extend our knowledge about the human 5-HT 3A molecular function but also provide novel insights into the mechanisms of action of allosteric ligands, which are of increasing interest as therapeutic drugs in all the superfamily. Streptococcus uberis is one of the most prevalent environmental pathogens of bovine mastitis. Biofilm growth ability by S. uberis looks to depend first upon the adherence of cells to a surface. The S. uberis ability to adhere to mammary gland epithelia might provide an advantage to colonize the lactating mammary gland. The objectives of this study were (a) to select S.uberis strains according to their ability to form biofilm, (b) to determine adherence to and internalization into MAC-T cells and (c) to investigate the expression profile adherence genes in these S. uberis strains. For the assays, the MAC-T bovine mammary epithelial cell line was used. Relative expression of genes acdA, lmb, scpA, sua, fbp and lbp was quantified by RT-qPCR. We observed that the RC38 strain from clinical bovine mastitis showed in the six genes higher values than control in both conditions. While the strain with greater ability to adhere, from clinical mastitis and biofilm producer (RC29) evidenced higher values in group 1 (G1) (bacteria after the initial contact with MAC-T cells) and decrease in group 2 (G2) (both adhered and internalized bacteria) than control. Strains with a moderate or strong capacity for biofilm production showed significantly lower relative expression values in the G2. In all adherence associated genes, strain RC19 showed relative expression values incremented in G1, while in G2 decreased expression. In conclusion, we did not find a single profile of relative expression because the relative expression levels of each gene differed depending on the strain and the co-culture stage of S. uberis cells from which RNA was obtained. El presente trabajo surge como una investigación con el fin de validar la aplicación de MLOps en el contexto de PATE. Para ello se ha llevado a cabo un estudio del estado del arte y se han analizado herramientas de MLOps, posibles escenarios de implementación junto a su gobernanza y herramientas de intercambio de información de manera segura entre los actores del sistema (PySyft). Como resultado de este trabajo, se logró el análisis de cuatro herramientas de MLOps y la descripción detallada de una de ellas para el contexto definido. El proyecto estudió los mecanismos de coexistencia entre especies vegetales de comunidades herbáceas de campo natural y su relación con la variación en los niveles de stress nutricional, con énfasis en la disponibilidad de fósforo. En dos comunidades: una donde fósforo es aparentemente no limitante y otra donde es claramente limitante. En el primer experimento se determinó la coexistencia radical entre las distintas especies que interactúan en la parte aérea. Utilizando metodologías de biología molecular se identificaron qué especies coexisten a nivel radical en los distintos perfiles de suelo y cuales ubican sus raíces en distintos nichos de suelo. En base a la generación de la biblioteca de secuencias de las dos regiones matK y trnL para todas las especies colectadas en las dos comunidades se identificaron en el muestreo de raíces 22 especies en un sitio y 15 especies en el otro en los primeros 20 cm de suelo, totalizando 27 especies distintas. Posteriormente, para las dos comunidades, se identificaron aquellas especies que cuyas raíces coexisten en el suelo y se cultivaron en invernáculo, sin restricciones y con bajo nivel de fósforo. Después de 2 meses se les asignó una estrategia de nutrición fosfatada en función de su nivel de manganeso en hoja, grado de micorrización y la producción de enzimas fosfatasas por las raíces. Se identificó una amplia variación en la magnitud de las cuatro características de adquisición de fósforo en cada comunidad. Por lo tanto se concluye que las estrategias de adquisición de fósforo coexisten en una misma comunidad vegetal, independiente del nivel de fósforo del suelo. No obstante, de acuerdo con el agrupamiento originado por el análisis de cluster se distinguen dos grupos de estrategias excluyentes: Especies con actividad fosfatasa y, o elevada concentración de manganeso en hoja, y especies con elevada colonización micorrítica. La materia orgánica disuelta (DOM, dissolved organic matter) es uno de los principales reservorios de carbono orgánico del planeta y puede persistir desde cientos a miles de años en el océano, contribuyendo así al secuestro de carbono. En general, la DOM es una pieza clave en los sistemas acuáticos, donde participa además de varios procesos ecosistémicos. Sin embargo, la caracterización química de la DOM es limitada debido a que está formada por una mezcla compleja de cientos de miles de compuestos diferentes. Por otro lado, los mecanismos detrás de su estabilidad a largo plazo en el océano siguen siendo un enigma. Para entender mejor el rol que juega la DOM en los procesos en los que participa es importante conocer los procesos que determinan su distribución, dilucidar su composición y las condiciones ambientales que contribuyen a su producción y degradación. Esta Tesis doctoral está enmarcada en las campañas oceanográficas realizadas en el marco del proyecto OCAL (Oceanografía integrada del golfo de Cádiz en un escenario de cambio global: Ciclo del carbono y flujos de gases invernadero). El golfo de Cádiz es un sistema espacialmente heterogéneo cuyas características biogeoquímicas y ecológicas están condicionadas por los intercambios entre los compartimentos ambientales que lo limitan (las cuencas mediterránea y atlántica, sistemas costeros, la atmósfera y el sedimento). El golfo de Cádiz es la única conexión entre el mar Mediterráneo y el Atlántico Norte, es decir, es una zona de transición biogeográfica entre ambas cuencas. En este trabajo se ha estudiado la distribución y características de la DOM en la plataforma continental del golfo de Cádiz, en los principales estuarios que allí desembocan y en volcanes de fango submarinos localizados entre los 500 y 1000 m de profundidad. En la plataforma continental y en los volcanes de fango submarinos la DOM se analizó utilizando sus propiedades ópticas (absorbancia y fluorescencia). Además, se realizó un análisis de masas de agua para diferenciar el efecto de los procesos físicos de los biogeoquímicos en la distribución de la DOM en la zona mesopelágica y se estimaron los flujos bentónicos de DOM desde los volcanes hacia las aguas profundas del golfo de Cádiz. En los estuarios del golfo de Cádiz además de las propiedades ópticas para caracterizar la DOM se empleó la técnica pirólisis con cromatografía de gases y espectrometría de masas (Py-GC-MS) y se realizaron análisis de aminoácidos libres disueltos (DFAA, dissolved free amino acids). Se estimaron los flujos de DOC y de las distintas fracciones de la DOM desde los estuarios a la zona costera del golfo de Cádiz. En la plataforma continental se identificaron seis componentes fluorescentes, tres del tipo húmico, dos del tipo proteico y una posible mezcla de compuestos proteicos con hidrocarburos aromáticos. La variabilidad de los componentes del tipo húmico se explica mayoritariamente por los procesos de mezcla de masas de agua, mientras que la variabilidad del carbono orgánico disuelto (DOC, dissolved organic carbon) y los compuestos del tipo proteico está fuertemente asociada a la estacionalidad y a los procesos biogeoquímicos que ocurren a escala local. En las capas profundas, la distribución del DOC presenta comportamientos contrastantes (eliminación/acumulación) asociado a la presencia de afloramientos costeros. En los volcanes de fango se identificaron cuatro de los seis componentes fluorescentes encontrados en la plataforma continental, dos del tipo húmico y dos del tipo proteico. Sin embargo, el origen de estos compuestos está relacionado con los fluidos volcánicos que provienen de los sedimentos profundos y con la actividad de las bacterias reductoras del sulfato. Los volcanes de fango representan una fuente de DOC y DOM a las aguas profundas del golfo de Cádiz. En los estuarios de los ríos Guadalquivir, Guadiana y Tinto- Odiel se identificaron cuatro componentes fluorescentes, dos del tipo húmico y dos del tipo proteico, también encontrados en la plataforma continental. Las características químicas y moleculares de la DOM exportada desde los estuarios a la zona costera depende de las condiciones locales, como las características de la cuenca y la reactividad biogeoquímica de la DOM dentro de cada estuario. Por ejemplo, la DOM en el estuario del río Guadalquivir y Guadiana es predominantemente de origen terrestre y su distribución está influenciada por la presencia de prácticas agrícolas y marismas en sus márgenes, mientras que en el estuario del río Tinto- Odiel predomina la DOM de origen autóctono asociado a una mayor influencia marina así como a la contaminación antropogénica debido a la actividad minera e industrial que ocurre en sus márgenes. Los resultados obtenidos mediante el análisis de Py-GC-MS coincidieron con los encontrados empleando las propiedades ópticas de la DOM. Las fracciones de DOM provenientes de plantas vasculares (lignina, fenoles, hidrocarburos aromáticos) fueron más abundantes en Guadalquivir, seguido del Guadiana y Tinto-Odiel, mientras que los compuestos derivados de la producción in situ y contaminantes antropogénicos fueron más abundantes en Tinto- Odiel (compuestos de metileno). Además, la variabilidad de la DOM en estos estuarios está fuertemente influenciada por los ciclos mareales y transportan DOC y DOM de origen mayoritariamente húmico a la zona costera, principalmente el estuario del Guadalquivir (1.25 kg C s −1 y 0.22 × 103 m2 s−1 de DOC y CDOM, respectivamente). Por último, en el estuario del río Guadalete, localizado en la bahía de Cádiz, evaluamos la relación entre los gases invernadero CO2, CH4 y N2O y la composición de la DOM. Se identificaron cuatro componentes fluorescentes, tres del tipo húmico, de diverso origen (terrestre, microbiano y proveniente de efluentes de la agricultura y aguas tratadas) y otro del tipo proteico. El estuario del Guadalete actúa como una fuente de CO2, CH4 y N2O a la atmósfera, en donde las concentraciones de estos gases están significativamente relacionas con la concentración del DOC y la composición de la DOM. La distribución del CO2 está relacionada principalmente con compuestos del tipo húmico con mayor aromaticidad, mientras que la concentración de N2O está mayormente influenciada por compuestos del tipo proteico derivados de efluentes. Por ultimo, la concentración de CH4 se relaciona con ambas fracciones de la DOM, húmica y proteica de diverso origen. Además se observó que podría estar ocurriendo un acoplamiento entre el flujo bentónico de CH4 y DOM dada la baja profundidad del estuario Guadalete. Por tanto, es importante tener en cuenta la composición de la DOM al estudiar la distribución de gases invernadero en sistemas estuarinos, y así comprender su rol y posibles respuestas asociadas al cambio climático. La Península Fildes (PF) (Antártida), presenta ocupación humana desde 1968 y es una de las áreas del continente con mayor presión antropogénica, además de encontrarse en una de las regiones con calentamiento global más acelerado. Varios lagos de origen glaciar caracterizan a la PF, muchos de los cuales se encuentran próximos a las bases permanentes y son empleados como suministro de agua. En este proyecto se estudiaron siete lagos de la PF con el objetivo de establecer los cambios a lo largo del último siglo de las comunidades microbianas, relacionándolo con las variaciones en el medio ambiente. Se trabajó con muestras de sedimento y con muestras de agua a partir de las cuales se extrajo el ADN antiguo bacteriano y actual, con el objetivo de evaluar la diversidad bacteriana mediante secuenciación masiva del gen ribosomal 16S. Asimismo, se evaluaron los pigmentos fósiles y en muestras de agua mediante HPLC relacionándolo con la biomasa y la estructura comunitaria del fitoplancton. Mediante fluorescencia de rayos X (XRF) se obtuvo la composición química del sedimento y se caracterizo a la materia orgánica mediante las concentraciones de C, N e isótopos estables del C y N. La estructura comunitaria de los microorganismos del presente difirió según el grado de cobertura de hielo que presentaban los lagos. Además, se observó un incremento en la productividad primaria luego del derretimiento de los lagos y del verano, indicando que el ingreso de materia orgánica, nutrientes y contaminantes determina la estructura comunitaria. Asimismo, el aumento de la biomasa fitoplanctónica observada a partir del siglo XXI puede relacionarse a las variaciones climáticas o a la contaminación local de los últimos años. Por otro lado, el bacterioplancton reveló cambios en su diversidad a partir de 1980, lo que podría relacionarse con la intensificación de las actividades humanas en la región. Addressing the ecological and evolutionary processes underlying biodiversity patterns is essential to identify the mechanisms shaping community structure and function. In bacteria, the formation of new ecologically distinct populations (ecotypes) is proposed as one of the main drivers of diversification. New ecotypes arise when mutations in key functional genes or acquisition of new metabolic pathways by horizontal gene transfer allow the population to exploit new resources, permitting their coexistence with the parental population. We previously reported the presence of microcystin-producing organisms of the Microcystis aeruginosa complex (toxic MAC) through an 800-km environmental gradient ranging from freshwater to estuarine-marine waters in South America. We hypothesize that the success of toxic MAC in such a gradient is due to the existence of very closely related populations that are ecologically distinct (ecotypes), each specialized to a specific arrangement of environmental variables. Here, we analyzed toxic MAC genetic diversity through quantitative PCR (qPCR) and high-resolution melting analysis (HRMA) of a functional gene (mcyJ, microcystin synthetase cluster). We explored the variability of the mcyJ gene along the environmental gradient by multivariate classification and regression trees (mCART). Six groups of mcyJ genotypes were distinguished and associated with different combinations of water temperature, conductivity, and turbidity. We propose that each mcyJ variant associated with a defined environmental condition is an ecotype (or species) whose relative abundances vary according to their fitness in the local environment. This mechanism would explain the success of toxic MAC in such a wide array of environmental conditions. IMPORTANCE Organisms of the Microcystis aeruginosa complex form harmful algal blooms (HABs) in nutrient-rich water bodies worldwide. MAC HABs are difficult to manage owing to the production of potent toxins (microcystins) that resist water treatment. In addition, the role of microcystins in the ecology of MAC organisms is still elusive, meaning that the environmental conditions driving the toxicity of the bloom are not clear. Furthermore, the lack of coherence between morphology-based and genomic-based species classification makes it difficult to draw sound conclusions about when and where each member species of the MAC will dominate the bloom. Here, we propose that the diversification process and success of toxic MAC in a wide range of water bodies involves the generation of ecotypes, each specialized in a particular niche, whose relative abundance varies according to its fitness in the local environment. This knowledge can improve the generation of accurate prediction models of MAC growth and toxicity, helping to prevent human and animal intoxication.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue comparar el poder de neutralización de enmiendas calcáreo- magnésicas y evaluar su efecto sobre el complejo de intercambio catiónico en suelos de la pampa llana santafesina. Para ello, se aplicaron tres enmiendas (caliza, dolomita y enmienda mezcla) a dos dosis (neutralización del 100% y 150% del hidrógeno de intercambio). Se evaluó: pH actual, pH potencial, hidrógeno, calcio y magnesio intercambiable luego de 60 días de incubación. El pH actual no mostró diferencias entre dosis, mientras que el incremento de pH de las enmiendas fue caliza > dolomita > mezcla. El pH potencial fue más sensible al tipo de enmienda y dosis. Todos los tratamientos redujeron el nivel de insaturación, aunque ninguno neutralizó la totalidad del hidrógeno intercambiable. En relación con el calcio intercambiable, todos los tratamientos produjeron aumentos y la mayor saturación cálcica se obtuvo con la aplicación de caliza o enmienda mezcla con la dosis necesaria para neutralizar 1,5 veces el hidrógeno intercambiable. En cuanto al magnesio, las enmiendas dolomita y mezcla aumentaron significativamente el contenido independientemente de la dosis. La información aquí presentada es de utilidad para la prescripción de enmiendas calcáreo- magnésica en los suelos de la Pampa llana santafesina. The objective of this study was to compare the neutralization power of amendments based on calcium and magnesium and to assess their effects on the cation exchange complex in soils of flat Pampas of Santa Fe. Three amendments (lime, dolomite and mixture amendment) at rates calculated to neutralize 100% and 150% of exchangeable hydrogen were applied to samples from soils incubated for 60 days. The responses on actual and potential pH, and hydrogen, calcium and magnesium exchangeables were assessed. The increment of actual pH showed differences between amendments and the order of response was lime > dolomite > mixture amendment. No difference between the applied rates were observed. The potential pH was more sensitive to the type and of rates amendment. All treatments reduced the level of unsaturation, although the full neutralization was not achieved with the tested rates. Increments of exchangeable calcium were observed in all treatments and the greatest calcium saturation was obtained when lime or mixture amendment were applied at the highest rate. Dolomite and mixture amendment significantly increased the content of magnesium regardless of the rate. Nanocomposites and hybrid materials of Ag-1,3,5- benzenetricarboxylic acid metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with Sand N-carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial activity against representative Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacterial strains using the qualitative disk-diffusion approach and the quantitative minimum inhibitory concentration test. The composites and hybrids were found to be nontoxic to living cells. The composite formation fostered a synergistic effect that enhanced their antibacterial activity compared with those of their pristine components. Charge transfer from AgMOF to CQDs facilitated the electrostatic interactions of the composites and hybrids with the bacterial cell membranes. Enhanced bactericidal activity was linked to morphological features (a nanorod-like morphology) and specific surface chemistry. The latter affected the release of silver. Silver on the surface of the MOFs rather than silver in the bulk was found to be important. The destruction of the MOF component in the extracellular environment led to the release of silver ions, which have a high affinity to S compounds of the cell physiology. The formation of metallic silver (Ago) and silver sulfides (Ag2S) was suggested as essential for the ability of the composites and hybrids to inhibit bacterial growth. El género Spalacopus incluye una sola especie, S. cyanus, endémica de la región central del Chile, siendo una de las especies mejor adaptada a la vida subterránea de la familia Octodontidae. Miembro del linaje que consiste en Octodontomys como hermano de Octodon y el clado representado por Spalacopus y Aconaemys. Si bien la morfología externa y cráneo-dentarias en S. cyanus han sido bien estudiadas, su morfología postcraneal es pobremente conocida. Por las peculiaridades de su estilo de vida y locomoción entre los miembros de la familia, es interesante caracterizar detalles de la morfología del esqueleto postcraneal de esta especie e inferir sus aspectos funcionales de la morfología. Se revisaron 29 ejemplares con material de postcráneo disponibles en dos colecciones sistemáticas: Museo de La Plata (MLP), La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina y Colección de Mamíferos del Instituto de Ciencias Ambientales y Evolutivas (UACH), Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia, Chile. Para la descripción detallada de la morfología de los elementos óseos se dividió al esqueleto en las siguientes regiones: esqueleto axial, cintura escapular y miembros anteriores, y cintura pélvica y miembros posteriores. Las estructuras incluidas en el esqueleto axial fueron descriptas principalmente en sentido cráneo-caudal y en los miembros en sentido próximo-distal. La observación de las estructuras se realizó con las lupas estereoscópicas Leica Wild M3Z y Nikon SMZ 745T, incluyendo fotografías para ilustrar las descripciones. En la morfología postcraneal de S. cyanus se observan características que se consideran altamente conservadas entre los miembros de la familia Octodontidae, pero algunos caracteres son exclusivos de la especie. El esqueleto axial está compuesto por siete vértebras cervicales, 12 ó 13 torácicas, seis o siete lumbares, cuatro sacras, entre 16 y 18 caudales, 12 ó 13 pares de costillas y un esternón compuesto por cinco esternebras. Los elementos óseos de las cinturas pectoral y pélvica como de los miembros anterior y posterior se describen en detalle, excepto los carpos y tarsos debido al mal estado de preservación o ausencia de los mismos. El patrón morfológico que presenta el postcráneo de S. cyanus se ajusta a un plan anatómico típico de especies terrestres y en algunos elementos óseos (húmero y ulna principalmente) se observan características típicamente asociadas con la habilidad excavadora. Los datos generados permitirán a futuro una mejor interpretación de los atributos postcraneales funcionalmente relacionados con los diferentes estilos de vida, evaluar sus estrategias locomotoras, así como también comprender la evolución de estos rasgos en un contexto filogenético. The genus Spalacopus includes only one species, S. cyanus, endemic to central Chile and one of the species best adapted to a subterranean lifetyle in the family Octodontidae. It is a member of the lineage consisting in Octodontomys as a sister clade containing Octodon and of a clade represented by Spalacopus and Aconaemys. Although the external and cranio-dental morphology have been well studied, little is known of the postcranial morphology of S. cyanus. Because of the peculiarities of its lifestyle and locomotion among the members of the family, it is interesting to characterize details of the morphology of the postcranial skeleton of this species and to infer their functional aspects of the morphology. Twenty-nine specimens with postcranial material stored in two collections were studied: Museo de La Plata (MLP), La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Colección de Mamíferos del Instituto de Ciencias Ambientales y Evolutivas (UACH), Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia, Chile. To describe in detail the morphology of the bone elements, the skeleton was divided in the following regions: axial skeleton, scapular girdle and forelimb, and pelvis girdle and hindlimb. The structures included in the axial skeleton were mainly described in cranial-caudal orientation and the limbs in proximal-distal orientation. All structures were observed with stereoscopic microscopes Leica Wild M3Z and Nikon SMZ 745T including pictures to illustrate the descriptions. Highly conservative characteristics among members of the family Octodontidae were observed in the postcranial morphology of S. cyanus, although some characters are exclusive to this species. The axial skeleton has seven cervical vertebrae, 12 or 13 thoracic, six or seven lumbar, four sacral, 16 to 18 caudal vertebrae, 12 or 13 ribs and a sternum with five sternebrae. The elements of the scapular and pelvic girdles as well as forelimbs and hindlimbs are described in detail, except the carpus and tarsus due to their poor state of conservation, or because they not available. The morphological pattern observed in the postcranial skeleton of S. cyanus conforms to a typical anatomical plan for terrestrial species, and some bones (mainly humerus and ulna) present characteristics associated with digging. The information obtained provided will allow a better interpretation of the postcranial attributes, functionally related with different lifestyle, in a future, as well as the evolution of the traits in a phylogenetic context. We here present a new gomphodont cynodont from the Ladinian/Carnian Upper Omingonde Formation of central Namibia. Etjoia dentitransitus gen. et sp. nov. is a medium-sized (skull length of 88.5mm) omnivorous gomphodont represented by an almost complete skull and a few cervical vertebrae. This new taxon is diagnosed by divergent first left and right lower incisors that bear large apically inclined denticles, a third lower gomphodont postcanine with a wellseparated mesial cingulum, four distal upper and lower sectorial teeth, and a lingually offset last upper sectorialpostcanine. Etjoia is particular in having a transitional dentition between basal gomphodonts and traversodontids. It shares with some non-traversodontid gomphodonts a high number of sectorial postcanines and ovoid mesial-most upper gomphodont postcanines with a centrally positioned transverse crest. Etjoia was, however, recovered as a basally branching Traversodontidae in phylogenetic analyses performed on different data matrices. It shares with traversodontidsupper gomphodont postcanines with a high transverse crest, sub-rectangular and mesiodistally elongated lower gomphodont postcanines, and a mesially displaced transverse crest in the lower gomphodont postcanines. We explored dental evolution in basal cynognathians based on a dentition-oriented data matrix. The acquisition of gomphodont postcanines, which allowed tooth-to-tooth occlusion, in basal-most gomphodonts was followed by a loss of shearing planes between the upper and lower gomphodont postcanines in non-diademodontid gomphodonts, and the development of deep basins and tall transverse crests in gomphodont teeth and shearing planes between the upper and lower gomphodont postcanines in basal traversodontids. These dental transformations likely resulted from three shifts in feeding ecologies, from a carnivorous to an omnivorous diet in basal-most gomphodonts, followed by an adaptation to a specialized feeding ecology possibly made of insects and hard plant material in basal-most neogomphodonts (traditional ¨trirachodontids¨), then an increase in the consumption of plant-material in basal traversodontids. The aim of the current study was to investigate the entomopathogenic capacity of the mold Fusarium verticillioides and the effect of its mycotoxins fumonisins, on the grain beetle Sitophilus zeamais. We evaluated the capacity of this fungus to infect live insects, the antifungal activity of constituents of the insect’s epicuticle, and the effect of a fumonisin extract on the fitness of the insects. We found that F. verticillioides could not penetrate the cuticle of S. zeamais and that the fumonisin extract had no negative effects on the fitness of the insects. However, the progeny of the insects increased, and the fumonisin extract had repellent effects. This is the first report about the effects of fumonisins on the relationship between F. verticillioides and S. zeamais, which may provide useful information about interactions between pathogenic microorganisms and insects, especially on stored product pests. Austrocedrus chilensis [D.Don] Pic. Serm. et Bizarri (Pinales: Cupressaceae) is a keystone tree species in South America. Mortality of A. chilensis has been reported over most of its distribution in Argentina, and Phytophthora austrocedri has been identified as the causal agent. The aim of this work was to evaluate rhizospheric microorganisms present in A. chilensis roots as biocontrol agents against P. austrocedri. Mycelial growth of P. austrocedri was inhibited by seven fungal and four bacterial isolates in vitro. Interaction among isolates and P. austrocedri was microscopically studied. Isolates with high in vitro fungistatic or fungicide performance were molecularly identified and inoculated in plants to evaluate their ability to reduce the effect of the pathogen. Two of the bacterial isolates were able to reduce the symptoms in A. chilensis seedlings inoculated with P. austrocedri. The lower Gállego River has been strongly degraded since the 1960s due to human activity (gravel mining, dump accumulation, channeling works), which has produced a deep channel incision. Although these human-driven processes are usually reported in fluvial bibliography, in this case, more complex results are observable. For instance, regarding the depth and incision rates, we observed no relationship between the most anthropically impacted areas and the sections with the deepest incisions; moreover, the deepening process continues 40 years after the human interventions ceased. The reason for this maladjustment is the role played by the exhumation of the underlying Pleistocene substrate, affected by the synsedimentary processes of karstification. The appearance of paleodolines filled with fine sediments on the incision bottom and sides is the main factor conditioning the continuity and magnitude of the process. Besides, these paleodepressions direct the river dynamics and course, thus favoring its widening when they appear and causing the development of a new riverbed (Qt13) while the 1960s floodplain (Qt12) is becoming an old terrace located between 5 and 11 m above the new alluvial bottom. There are no previous records about this kind of consequences in the regional fluvial dynamics. El curso bajo del río Gállego ha sido fuertemente degradado desde los años 1960 por la actividad antrópica (extracción de áridos, acumulaciones de escombros, obras de encauzamiento) que ha conducido a una fuerte incisión. Aunque este tipo de procesos inducidos por el hombre son habituales en la bibliografía fluvial, en este caso se aprecian efectos más complejos. Son, por ejemplo, la profundidad y velocidad de la incisión, la falta de relación entre puntos de máxima intervención y los de mayor incisión o la continuidad del proceso cuarenta años después de cesar ese tipo de acciones. La respuesta a estos desajustes está en el papel que está jugando la exhumación del sustrato pleistoceno infrayacente, afectado por procesos sin sedimentarios de karstificación. La aparición de paleodolinas rellenas de sedimentos finos en el fondo y laterales de la incisión es actualmente el principal determinante de su importancia y continuidad. Además, estas paleodepresiones dirigen la dinámica y trazado del río y puntualmente fa- vorecen ensanchamientos laterales. Esto propicia la aparición de un nuevo lecho (Qt13) a medida que el lecho de los años 1960 (Qt12) va quedando como una terraza colgada entre 5 y 11 m sobre el nuevo fondo aluvial. Boccardiella ligerica (Ferronniere, 1898) is an exotic polychaete introduced to the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The species was described for the region 36 years ago, and no updating revision was reported to date. Here, we addressed a detailed study on morphology and abundance variations of B. ligerica in the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon. We found that B. ligerica from Mar Chiquita shares the diagnostic characters with specimens from the original description (France), and was associated with the reef‐like structures (“reefs”) of the invader polychaete Ficopomatus enigmaticus (Fauvel, 1923). B. ligerica was not found in sediments, and its distribution in reefs was independent of certain habitat features (i.e., deep or macroalgae), but seasonally, reaching the highest abundances in warm seasons (December). Our results suggest that environmental features might drive the B. ligerica population dynamic, while the substrate offered by F. enigmaticus might support B. ligerica population abundance. The present study updates the known geographic distribution of this nonindigenous species in brackish waters from the SW Atlantic Ocean and shows its association with an invasive habitat‐forming species. In the north Patagonian region of the Argentinean Continental Shelf, the San Jorge Gulf (SJG; 45°‐47°S, 65°30ʹ‐67°30ʹW) is the main nursery ground of age‐0+ Argentine hake Merluccius hubbsi Marini, 1933, one of the most important fishery resources in Argentina. The gulf exhibits strong seasonal and spatial fluctuations in environmental features, which might affect survival of age‐0+ individuals and recruitment to the adult population. Our main goal was to evaluate the seasonal and spatial dynamics of their nutritional status within the SJG in winter 2016, spring 2016 and summer 2017. Condition indices (relative condition factor Kn, hepatosomatic index HSI and liver lipid content %L) and diet information (feeding incidence and relative importance of prey) were combined with physical (temperature and salinity) and biological (satellite chlorophyll‐a concentration; chl‐a) data. Age‐0+ condition indices and prey intake showed significant seasonal variations, with minimum values in winter, intermediate in summer and maximum in spring, strongly coupled to the mean chl‐a concentration in each season. Herbivorous euphausiids Euphausia spp. were the preferred prey along the study period. A bottom‐up effect on condition of age‐0+ hake is suggested, manifested as lower condition values in winter, the less productive season. Spatially, better conditioned individuals matched sectors of the gulf where chl‐a concentrations were higher, coupled to the presence of frontal systems. Monitoring age‐0+ hake nutritional status is relevant in the current global change scenario, which might modify phytoplankton biomass and composition and, consequently, the herbivorous zooplankton abundances. We present the first record of Promops centralis Thomas, 1915 for Santa Fe province, Argentina. This species was previously known in Argentina only from Formosa province. This new record adds a second province to the distribution of this species in Argentina and a new ecoregion, the Espinal. Furthermore, this record extends the distribution area of P. centralis by almost 610 km to the south and increase to 24 the number of bats species in Santa Fe province. Fil: Montani, María Eugenia.
