Abstract

Since their inception, museums have concentrated on collecting and objectifying easily moved works of art, mostly paintings and sculptures. This process has been highly selective and has mostly ignored context in favor of isolated display. It is understandable, then, that museums have had difficulties in properly presenting medieval art, for which the interrelationship between work and setting is so important. Stained glass has suffered especially from the tendency to treat it as an isolated object, and the difficulties it presents have often exiled it to the storeroom. The installation by Jane Hayward of the stained-glass panels from St. Leonhard in Lavanttal in the Gothic Chapel at The Cloisters is an important example of how a museum should fit itself to the work and not the other way around. These panels were part of a decorative scheme that included both the architecture of their setting and the polychromy of the architecture surrounding them. The original polychromy of St. Leonhard was removed in a nineteenth-century restoration that stripped the walls to the bare stone. However, conclusions about the effect of the original setting can be drawn from other sites of the period. The installation of these panels effectively conveys the original character of an important stained-glass program by the so-called "First Judenburg Workshop." Jane Hayward has made it possible to experience some of the underlying unity of Gothic glass and architecture, representing a new awareness among museums and art historians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article explores the history of the International Center of Medieval Art (ICMA), which was originally known as the International Center of Romanesque Art (ICRA). The author contends that the reluctance to integrate the Middle Ages into the American cultural consciousness was the source of problems surrounding the creation of the ICMA. The ICRA sponsored lectures and the “Gesta” journal, which was aimed at devotees of medieval art, but did not contain original research. In 1959, the ICRA decided to cover all areas of medieval art and thus became known as the ICMA. In 1969, the ICMA headquarters moved to The Cloisters museum in New York City and subsequently began a period of increased membership.
