Ceramic materials are widely used in armor or protective structures, providing weight saving at equivalent performance in comparison to their steel counterparts. Plate-impact experiments are commonly used to investigate the dynamic behavior of ceramics under compressive loading. Using the particle velocity measured at the back of the target, some mechanical properties such as the Hugoniot elastic limit (HEL) as well as the Hugoniot curve of the material can be deduced. Nevertheless, these tests do not provide a direct measurement of the plastic hardening (post-HEL) behavior of the target. In the present work, an experimental shockless plate-impact configuration was developed and implemented to conduct a Lagrangian analysis. This configuration relies on the use of a wavy-machined flyer plate impacting a target made of a buffer, two ceramic plates of different thicknesses, and two window plates as backing. First, the use of wavy flyer plates to generate a loading ramp was validated by considering the impact of the wavy-machined flyer plate against a target, both made of 316L steel. A numerical analysis of this test was developed to confirm the pulse-shaping effect observed experimentally. Next, a ceramic, F99.7 alumina was subjected to the shockless plate impact test in Lagrangian configuration considering the same steel as a buffer and flyer plate material. These tests coupled with Lagrangian analysis enable the curve of axial-stress vs axial-strain beyond the isentropic elastic limit (IEL) to be deduced. Over the past decade, the certified power conversion efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has increased to 26.1%. However, phase instability originating from lattice strains, has limited their commercialization. Strains will inevitably be generated during the PSC fabrication and service process due to the "soft lattice" nature of halide perovskites. In particular, flexible PSCs are subjected to not only mechanical tensile and compressive loads, but also suffer from thermal stresses. In this study, strain-induced changes in the phase stability and the corresponding optoelectronic properties of CsPbI3−xBrx (CsPbI3, CsPbBr3, and CsPbI2Br) systems under tensile and compressive stresses were investigated using first-principles calculations. The results showed that compressive stresses reduce the bandgap value and increase the light absorption coefficient; thus, the optoelectronic performance is improved, whereas the light absorption coefficient decreases regardless of how the bandgap changes under tensile stresses. Moreover, under the same stress, the tensile strain value was twice that of the compressive strain, and the critical value of the transition from the cubic to tetragonal phase was lower, indicating that phase stability was worse under tensile stresses. Therefore, during the fabrication of PSCs, the tensile stress state should be adjusted to the compressive stress state, which is favorable for enhancing PSCs photovoltaic performance and phase stability. The results not only provide direct evidence of tensile and compressive strains influencing the phase stability and optoelectronic property changes in halide perovskites, but also highlight lattice-strain tailoring for the composition design, process optimization, and interface engineering of efficient and stable PSCs. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of aging on the fracture load (Lf) and reliability of glass- ceramics a;er different etching protocols. Materials and Methods: Specimens were fabricated and divided according to the etching Ame (10% hydrofluoric acid [HF] for 20 seconds, 40 seconds, and 60 seconds). Etched surfaces were examined under microscopy. The ceramics were resin-cemented to a denAn analog material. Samples were split into two groups (n = 20 each) and tested a;er 24 hours (I) or stored in 37°C water for 1 year (A). A compressive load (0.1 mm/minute) was applied to the samples unAl failure was detected by acoustic emission. The influence of aging on the Lf was tested by two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests (α = .05). The characterisAc fracture load (L0) and Weibull modulus (m) values were calculated. Results: Lithium silicate (LS) etching for 20 seconds resulted in the highest immediate Lf, which was significantly decreased a;er aging (P ≤ .05). Water storage had no effect on the Lf of glass- ceramic etched for 40 and 60 seconds (P > .05). For lithium disilicate (LD), the etching Ame had no significant effect on the immediate or aged Lf (P > .05). The Lf was significantly reduced a;er aging (A) for LD (P ≤ .05). Radial cracks were the predominant failure mode. Surface topography was more regular a;er lower etching Ames for LD and a;er higher Ames for LS. Conclusions: After 1 year of water-assisted aging, the evaluated etching Ames had no influence on the load-bearing capacity and structural reliability of resin-bonded glass- ceramics. Purpose: To evaluate and compare the fracture mode and strength of monolithic zirconia to veneered zirconia and metal-ceramic full-coverage restorations following artificial aging and to test the performance of translucent zirconia in terms of load-bearing capacity. Materials and Methods: Two mandibular first molars were prepared and scanned for their respective groups of full-coverage restorations. A total of 75 fullcoverage restorations were fabricated and divided into five groups: two groups for monolithic zirconia, two groups for veneered zirconia, and one group for metal-ceramic. Then, 75 light-cured hybrid composite resin dies were fabricated to serve as abutments. Before cementation, all full-coverage restorations were subjected to accelerated aging. After cementation, all full-coverage restorations were subjected to compressive loading until fracture in an electromechanical universal testing machine. A two-way nested ANOVA and Tukey test were used to analyze the results with 95% confidence levels. Results: Monolithic zirconia full-coverage restorations showed the highest mean fracture resistance of 4,201.0 N, followed by metalceramic full-coverage restorations of 3,609.3 N, and veneered zirconia full-coverage restorations showed the lowest mean fracture resistance of 2,524.6 N. The main mode of failure was cohesive bulk fracture for the monolithic zirconia group, cohesive/adhesive failure with infrastructure damage for the veneered zirconia group, and cohesive/adhesive failure without infrastructure damage for the metal-ceramic group. Conclusions: Monolithic zirconia full-coverage restorations showed superior resistance to fracture compared to metal-ceramic full-coverage restorations and are highly reliable in terms of load-bearing capacity within the posterior regions of the mouth. The thermo-mechanical stress, which was a combination of thermal stress from rapid temperature changed and dynamic mechanical stress from scrap impact, accelerated the damage to MgO–C refractories during service. The influence of graphite content (8 wt% and 16 wt%), heat treatment temperature, and oxidation level (partially oxidized or not) on dynamic mechanical stress damage behavior was investigated using the Split-Hopkinson pressure bar test at various loading velocities. The results indicated the SHPB test could form dynamic stress, and the parameters obtained post-test could characterize the dynamic mechanical properties of MgO–C refractories. Furthermore, all of the specimens' dynamic compressive strength clearly demonstrated the strain rate hardening effect; this phenomenon was particularly evident in the low-graphite specimens. Additionally, the thermally treated specimens dissipated impact energy by destroying the whole volume, whereas the oxidized specimens suffered damage layer by layer, and the specimens' dynamic mechanical characteristics were weakened by oxidization or heat treatment. Numerical simulations are essential for predicting the mechanical properties of different structures like gyroids that center this study. Three different methods are explored: shell elements, solid elements, and homogenization. Results reveal that homogenization is only suitable for obtaining the properties in the elastic zone, whereas solid models can determine also the behaviors in the plateau zone and the densification point. In the case of shell elements model, it can predict the elastic behavior model and the levels of stress in the plateau zone but with a lower accuracy than the solid element, but it cannot predict the densification point. The load‐bearing capacity and failure characteristics of composite structures are closely related to their dimensions. In this study, low‐velocity impact, ultrasonic non‐destructive testing, and compression after impact tests were conducted on composite laminates of varying widths to investigate the influence of size effects. Distinct impact response profiles and compression failure modes were characterized. The results indicate that under impact loading, the delamination threshold load (6700 N ~ 7200 N) and the knee‐point energy (40 J) are not affected by width. However, variations in width lead to differences in indentation depth, impact duration, peak load, delamination characteristics, and energy absorption. Furthermore, increasing impact energy further magnifies these differences. Under compression loading, wider laminates exhibit lower residual strength, with the influence of impact energy on residual strength decreasing as width increases. Importantly, the observed compression failure deformation mode transitions from localized buckling to widespread sub‐layer delamination‐induced compression failure. This suggests that changes in width alter the governing mechanical mechanisms of CAI failure. Consequently, the use of a single‐size laminate to represent both LVI and CAI processes is not recommended. Based on experimental results, the reliability of the equivalent damage method in predicting the residual compression strength of laminates of different widths was confirmed, providing valuable insights for practical engineering applications. This paper presents an experimental examination of the compression demeanor of lightweight corrugated core composite (CCC) sandwich panel and corrugated core smart composites (CCSC) sandwich panels subjected to quasi‐static edgewise compression loading. The existence of shape memory alloy (SMA) wires and pre‐strain percentages of SMA are the indicators studied in this article. The fabrication procedure presented and the appraisement of the mechanical properties of the CCC and CCSC sandwich panels are expressed. The core geometry of samples is trapezoid corrugated made of aluminum. The facesheets are four layers of woven glass fiber/ epoxy laminated composite. For evaluation of the efficacy of the presence of SMA wires on mechanical specifications of sandwich panels, three SMA wires with various pre‐strain percentages (0%, 3%, and 6%) are embedded in each composite facesheet. Mechanical properties of all types of CCC and CCSC sandwich panels such as maximum force, critical damage force, specific strength, absorb energy, specific toughness, Young's modulus, and specific stiffness were evaluated. Results showed that the CCC sandwich panel has higher mechanical specifications than the CCSC sandwich panels with 0% and 3% pre‐strain. Also, increasing pre‐strained SMA wires improves all mechanical parameters of CCSC sandwich panels. CCSC sandwich panel with 6% pre‐strain has the highest compression properties than other sandwich panels. Maximum Force, Critical Damage Force, Specific Strength, Absorbed Energy, Specific Toughness, Young's Modulus, and Specific Stiffness of CCSC sandwich panel with 6% pre‐strain are 14.73 kN, 13.6 kN, 9.55 MPa/g, 26.61 kJ, 0.346 MJ/m3g, 4395 MPa and 0.61 kN/mm g, respectively. Predicting failure initiation in nonlinear composite materials, often referred to as metamaterials, is a fundamental challenge in nonlinear solid mechanics. Microstructural failure mechanisms encompass fracture, decohesion, cavitation, compression-induced contact and instabilities, affecting their unconventional static and dynamic performances. To fully take advantage of these materials, especially in extreme applications, it is imperative to predict their nonlinear behaviour using reliable, accurate and computationally efficient numerical methodologies. This study presents an innovative nonlinear homogenization-based theoretical framework for characterizing the failure behaviour of periodic reinforced hyperelastic composites induced by reinforcement/matrix decohesion and interaction between contact mechanisms and microscopic instabilities. Debonding and unilateral contact between different phases are incorporated by employing an enhanced cohesive/contact model, which features a special nonlinear interface constitutive law and an accurate contact formulation within the context of finite strain continuum mechanics. The theoretical formulation is demonstrated using periodically layered composites subjected to macroscopic compressive loading conditions along the lamination direction. Numerical results illustrate the ways in which debonding phenomena, in conjunction with fibre microbuckling, may influence the critical loads of the examined composite solid. The sensitivity of the results obtained through the proposed contact–cohesive model at finite strain with respect to its implementation is also explored. Based on the macroscopic structure control theory, The slate with a significant bedding plane is a composite rock mass composed of rock blocks containing microscopic defects, joint surface closure elements, and shear deformation elements. Considering the coupling damage effect of water erosion and triaxial compressive load on bedding structure plane, the transversely isotropic damage constitutive model of slate under triaxial compressive load is derived with the dip angle of bedding and confining pressure as the variable. Firstly, based on the statistical theory of continuous damage mechanics and the maximum tensile strain criterion, the transversely isotropic deformation constitutive model of rock block with micro-defects is given; Secondly, based on the phenomenological theory of closed deformation and shear-slip deformation mechanism of layered structural plane under the coupling action of water erosion and triaxial compression load, the calculation formula of axial deformation of layered structural plane under the coupling action is given; Finally, to verify the accuracy of the established constitutive model, triaxial compression tests are carried out to study the influence of dip angle and confining pressure on the macroscopic mechanical properties and mechanism of slate. The results show that: the established triaxial compression damage constitutive model of bedding slate can accurately describe the stress–strain relationship of bedding slate after water environment erosion. With the increase of bedding dip angle, the strength and deformation capacity of the bedding slate first decreases and then increases, showing a U-shaped distribution as a whole. This study develops a sophisticated three-dimensional elastoplastic progressive damage finite element analysis (FEA) model for stiffened composite materials under axial compression. The model integrates the Hashin and Ye criteria to capture the inception of damage within the composite and introduces a cohesive zone model (CZM) to simulate debonding between stiffeners and panels. Furthermore, damage evolution based on energy release rate and plastic flow rules grounded in Hill’s criteria are employed to thoroughly explore the progressive failure behavior of stiffened composite materials. Implemented within Abaqus/Explicit through user-defined ‘VUMAT’ subroutines, the model ensures computational accuracy and reliability. Comparative evaluations against standard linear elastic progressive damage models demonstrate a statistically significant improvement of at least 5% in predicting ultimate load capacities. When porous materials are subjected to compressive loads, localized failure chains, commonly termed anticracks, can occur and cause large-scale structural failure. Similar to tensile and shear cracks, the resistance to anticrack growth is governed by fracture toughness. Yet, nothing is known about the mixed-mode fracture toughness for highly porous materials subjected to shear and compression. We present fracture mechanical field experiments tailored for weak layers in a natural snowpack. Using a mechanical model for interpretation, we calculate the fracture toughness for anticrack growth for the full range of mode interactions, from pure shear to pure collapse. The measurements show that fracture toughness values are significantly larger in shear than in collapse, and suggest a power-law interaction between the anticrack propagation modes. Our results offer insights into the fracture characteristics of anticracks in highly porous materials and provide important benchmarks for computational modeling. Porous materials such as snow can collapse under compression, forming anticracks. The authors show that anticrack fracture modes vary with loading direction and find a mechanism that suggests that cracks grow more easily under compression than under shear, advancing stability models for porous materials. The musculoskeletal models have been improved to estimate accurate knee compression force (KCF) and have been used to reveal the causal relationship between KCF and muscle weakness. Previous studies have explored how muscle weakness influences the KCF during gait; however, the influence of muscle weakness is possibly larger during activities that require deeper knee flexion (e.g., stair ambulation) than other activities (e.g., gait) because of the small knee contact area of articular surfaces. To explore how muscle weakness influences the KCF during stair ambulation. Ten young adults performed stair ascent and descent tasks at a comfortable speed. Based on a previous study, we created muscle weakness models of rectus femoris (RF), vastus muscles (VAS), gluteus medius (Gmed), and gluteus maximus (Gmax), and the medial and lateral KCF (KCFmed and KCFlat) during stair ambulation were calculated. Similar to the gait, the Gmed weakness increased KCFmed and decreased KCFlat during stair ascent and descent. Whereas, unlike the gait, the Gmax weakness increased KCFmed during stair ascent and the VAS weakness decreased KCFmed and KCFlat during stair ascent and descent. Moreover, the percentage changes in KCF were similar (or large) during stair ambulation compared with those during gait. Considering the KCF alterations caused by each muscle weakness, the weaknesses in Gmax and Gmed might lead to cartilage loss and pain in the knee, and the VAS weakness might lead to low stability of the knee. Subsea systems for oil exploitation and renewable offshore energy generally employ cables, hoses, risers, umbilical and power energy cables, mooring lines, among other slender components. From the global modeling perspective, all such "lines" can be well represented by classes of structural models according to phenomena of interest for each analysis—eg.: bending/torsion and/or tension/compression loads. In this context, one is frequently interested in static and dynamic effects. Moreover, geometric nonlinearities, hydrodynamic loads and contact with the seabed can play an important role. The present work proposes a general and robust numerical methodology able to establish and analyze complete offshore systems, composed of numerous lines attached to a floating unit. Catenary, lazy-wave, vertical, or other geometric configurations can be considered for each line. The initial guess for the system configuration is produced by a set of analytical solutions, considering a multi-segment extensible catenary formulation. This is implemented into an in-house numerical finite element framework, which models and solves the statics and dynamics of the system. We employ geometrically exact beam and truss models, handling all external loads of interest and contact interactions with the seabed. The aim of the present study is to elucidate the non-linear stability characteristics of randomly distributed carbon nanotube-reinforced fiber composite (RD-CNTRFC) beams subjected to thermo-mechanical loading. Effective material properties of RD-CNTRFC are estimated using the Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach and Halpin–Tsai micromechanical techniques. The material properties are considered to be temperature-dependent, and the influence of carbon nanotube (CNT) agglomeration is also incorporated in material properties estimation of hybrid matrix. The strain-displacement relations are assumed by incorporating the higher-order shear deformation theory and geometrical nonlinearity (von Kármán). The governing partial differential equations are obtained by minimizing the total potential energy of the beam. Buckling loads of beam subjected to in-plane compressive loads are estimated using Eigen value approach. Similarly, buckling temperatures are also determined by solving Eigenvalue problem iteratively due to temperature-dependent material properties. The non-linear equilibrium paths under thermal and mechanical loadings are traced through iterative Eigenvalue approach. Numerical results are presented to elucidate the influence of various parameters like CNT agglomeration, ply sequences, span-to-depth ratio, boundary conditions, and mass fraction of CNTs. Graphene platelets (GPLs) exhibit outstanding mechanical and physical properties and therefore are employed as a reinforcement in advanced polymer composite structures. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the biaxial buckling of functionally graded graphene-reinforced sandwich plates with a soft orthotropic core. A new high-order three-layer theory is developed for the accurate modeling and analysis of the sandwich structure. The sandwich plate is divided into three layers including two face sheets and a core and a different third-order kinematic assumption is dedicated to each layer. The transverse flexibility of each layer as well as the displacements continuity at the interfaces are considered. Additionally, the continuity conditions and the conditions of zero transverse stresses in the whole structure are satisfied. The plate is subjected to a biaxial compressive loading and the governing equations are derived using the principle of minimum potential energy. Analytical solutions are presented for simply supported boundary conditions to obtain the critical buckling load. The influences of plate geometry and GPL properties on buckling load are investigated. The results obtained in specific cases are compared with the published results and the validity of the present results is confirmed. Limited research is available in the literature to investigate the presentation of normal strength concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) circular compression elements under compression loading by considering various material and geometric coefficients. Thus, the present study investigates the mechanical behavior of CFST compression elements employing nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA), empirical/theoretical modeling, and a newly developed Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model, based on a large experimental database of 1223 samples. The NLFEA modeling is performed in ABAQUS (6.14) with an improved concrete damaged plasticity model for laterally restrained concrete. Various geometric and material properties are considered, for parametric NLFEA estimates preliminary validated toward the available experimental database. A new ANN model for the load-carrying capacity of CFST circular elements was also offered by employing the experimental database. [Display omitted] Li-ion batteries suffer from two key safety issues: thermal overload and compression recovery, which may lead to flammability and mechanical failure. Silica aerogels are promising solutions to both these issues owing to their excellent thermal stability and tailored mechanical properties. However, finding the optimum sol composition in sol-gel-based aerogel synthesis is needed to address these issues at industry-relevant scales. Here, we propose an innovative approach to determine the optimum sol composition for methylsilsesquioxane (MSQ) aerogel sheets, which is based on the mechanisms of the effects of molar ratios of hydrolysis water and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) on the physical properties of MSQ aerogel sheets and according to the ternary contour distribution of their properties. The synthesized MSQ aerogels exhibited a soft, light, and powderless texture and featured superhydrophobic properties (150.2°), low thermal conductivity of 33.6 mW/(m·K), high thermal stability temperature in nitrogen atmosphere at 479.3 °C and moderate short-term (<6 h) service temperature of 120.0 °C. Significantly, the structural stability and elasticity of the aerogels surpassed the current state-of-the-art, showing recovery to 81.3 % of the original thickness and 85.2 % of the original stress after being subjected to 400 cycles of high-speed and high-strain consecutive compression, respectively. These excellent properties make the MSQ aerogel sheets promising for applications in thermal load and compression recovery management of diverse energy storage devices, including batteries for next-generation electric vehicles. Background: The damage and failure behavior of ductile metals depends on the stress state as well as on the loading history. Biaxial experiments with suitable specimens can be used to targeted generate different loading conditions, thus allowing the investigation of a wide variety of load cycles with different stress states. Objective: In the biaxial experiments with the newly presented HC-specimen cyclic shear loads are superimposed by various constant compressive and tensile loads. Buckling during compressive loading in both axes is avoided by an additional newly introduced downholder. Methods: The strain fields at the surfaces of the biaxial specimens are evaluated by digital image correlation (DIC), and after failure the corresponding fracture surfaces are analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Associated numerical simulations employing the presented material model provide information on the current stress states. Results: The introduced downholder successfully prevents buckling during compressive loading. The strain fields detect a clear influence of the shear direction and a tensile superposition of the cyclic shear load leads to more brittle and a compressive superposition to more ductile behavior. The accompanying numerical calculations reveal the associated, different stress states. Conclusions: The new experimental program with biaxially loaded specimens for the investigation of damage and failure behavior under cyclic loading enables the targeted examination of a wide variety of load cycles and is thus suitable for the comprehensive analysis of these phenomena. Uneven settlement of the strata induced by ground fissure activity trigger great damage to a shield tunnel crossing a ground fissure zone. It is of great significance for the safe maintenance of tunnels to accurately predict the mechanical response of the tunnel structure under the dislocation of a ground fissure. In this paper, an analytical solution of mechanical behaviors of a shield tunnel crossing an active ground fissure zone is proposed. The shield tunnel-strata interaction in a ground fissure site is simplified as a Timoshenko beam placed on a Vlasov foundation. The governing differential equation and the closed-form solution for an equivalent shield tunnel subjected to additional load induced by the dislocation of ground fissure are derived. The proposed solution is adopted to analyze the mechanical behaviors of a shield tunnel, including tunnel displacement, rotation, bending moment, and shear force. The results of a model test and a numerical model are provided to verify the rationality of the proposed analytical solutions. Finally, a parameter sensitivity analysis about the additional load forms, the compression and shear modulus of the foundation, and the shear stiffness coefficients of the tunnel are conducted. The result shows that the form and value of the additional load has a large impact on the deformation and a slight impact on the internal forces of the tunnel. The foundation compression modulus determines the constraint effect of the strata, and the deformation and internal force response of a tunnel decrease with the increasing foundation shear modulus. A geometry‐constraint‐based nonordinary state‐based peridynamic (GC‐NOSBPD) model is developed to investigate the fracture characteristics of flawed brittle disc specimens under compressive loading as well as its fracturing mechanism. The bond‐associated horizon (BAH) size is directly defined based on the kinematic constraint (KC). This proposed model can well mitigate the numerical oscillation. The failure criteria based on the bond‐associated stress state are utilized to simulate the fracture of materials. Two stress effects can offer an insight into the fracturing mechanism of flawed specimens. The failure modes of flawed specimens are controlled by the tensile failure, and the crack growth trajectories acquired by the present numerical model are equivalent to those obtained by the experimental observations. The effects of size and crack inclination angles on the fracture toughness of brittle materials are assessed. The GC‐NOSBPD model is competent for evaluating the fracture damage of flawed brittle materials and understanding its failure mechanism. Spatially resolved capacitance-based stress self-sensing in unmodified concrete has been demonstrated. The spatial resolution is 45 mm in one dimension, which is in the direction of the capacitance measurement. Parallel coplanar component electrodes (aluminum, 5-mm wide), attached to the concrete using double-sided adhesive tape) separated by 45 mm are used to measure the in-plane capacitance in the direction perpendicular to the length of the electrodes. Combinations of component electrodes are electrically connected to form an electrode. The capacitance ranges from ∼200 pF to ∼750 pF. The greater is the number of component electrodes in an electrode, the higher is the capacitance. The compressive loading is applied at selected areas located between adjacent component electrodes. The stress (defined as load divided by the 300 ×300-mm2 concrete area) is up to 3000 Pa. The load decreases the capacitance monotonically and reversibly. The fractional decrease in capacitance ranges from ∼0.1 % to ∼0.5 %. More spatially concentrated loading, as for loading near the edges of the specimen, gives greater fractional decrease in capacitance. The capacitance decreases with increasing inter-electrode distance. To enhance the performance of meta-heuristic algorithms, the development of new operators and the efficient combination of various optimization techniques are valuable strategies for discovering global optimal solutions. In this research endeavor, we introduce a novel optimization algorithm called PGS (Particle Swarm Optimization-GA-Sliding Surface). PGS combines the strengths of particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA), and sliding surface (SS) to tackle both mathematical test functions and real-world optimization problems. To achieve this, we adaptively tune the weighting function and learning coefficients of the PSO algorithm using the sliding mode control's SS relation. The global best particle discovered through the PSO method serves as one of the parents in the GA's crossover operation. This new crossover operator is then probabilistically integrated with an improved particle swarm optimization algorithm, enhancing convergence speed and facilitating escape from local optima. We evaluate the proposed algorithm's performance on both uni-modal and multi-modal mathematical test functions, considering un-rotated and rotated cases, thereby testing its effectiveness and efficiency against other prominent optimization techniques. Furthermore, we successfully implement the PGS algorithm in optimizing the state feedback controller for a nonlinear quadcopter system and determining the cross-section for an inelastic compression member. Columns in traditional timber structures are commonly seen resting on stone bases and are very important in resisting lateral loads. This paper numerically modeled the lateral resistance of the columns combined with experimental investigation. Different numerical models were developed, based on which sensitivity analyses were performed. A practical numerical modelling strategy was further proposed and verified. The analysis results indicated that instead of material properties and contact area, the columns' lateral performance was much more sensitive to the variation of surface curvature at bottom surface. Without consideration of the surface curvature, the modeling error in the initial stiffness and peak load of a column was more than 607% and 8%, respectively. By best matching the load–displacement curves of tested column specimens, the optimal surface curvature was identified as 1/20306.5 mm−1. Then, a practical finite numerical model, characterized by the optimal curvature at the bottom surface, was proposed. This modelling method was validated by use of existing test results of traditional timber columns with different diameters and vertical compression loads. The modelling load–displacement curves agreed well with experimental curves both in terms of the initial lateral stiffness and peak load. The thermomechanical coupling of rocks refers to the interaction between the mechanical and thermodynamic behaviors of rocks induced by temperature changes. The study of this coupling interaction is essential for understanding the mechanical and thermodynamic properties of the surrounding rocks in underground engineering. In this study, an improved temperature-dependent linear parallel bond model is introduced under the framework of a particle flow simulation. A series of numerical thermomechanical coupling tests are then conducted to calibrate the micro-parameters of the proposed model by considering the mechanical behavior of the rock under different thermomechanical loadings. Good agreement between the numerical results and experimental data are obtained, particularly in terms of the compression, tension, and elastic responses of granite. With this improved model, the thermodynamic response and underlying cracking behavior of a deep-buried tunnel under different thermal loading conditions are investigated and discussed in detail. This research investigates the performance of ABS P400 parts under compressive loading. These ABS P400 parts are fabricated by fused deposition modeling (FDM) process using omnidirectional printing. The effects of three critical parameters, raster angle (A), air gap (B), and raster width (C), each at three different levels, were analyzed on three different performance measures, i.e. total deformation up to failure (TD) measured in %, maximum energy (ME) in MJ/m3 and break energy (BE) in MJ/m3. Results of experimentations were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), perturbation curve and 3D surface plots. The research established the anisotropic nature, durability and less brittleness of the FDM fabricated ABSP400 part, which leads to lower strength and also influence the energy absorbing behavior while deformation under compression. Complex relationships were exhibited between the chosen parameters and studied measures. It was also observed that TD is noticeable due to less brittleness of ABS P400 however, TD and BE vary in a contradictory fashion with changes in process parameters. The models were validated using normality plots. Multi-objective optimization was done using the desirability approach to determine the optimal combination of FDM process parameters for optimum responses. The desirability result showed that the optimized input parameter is A=60∘,B=0.002mm, and C=0.477mm which yield maximized optimum responses as TD=47.94%, ME=1.6×106MJ/m3, and BE=2.13×107MJ/m3. The work not only reflects the effect of three FDM parameters on the total deformation up to failure (TD in %) but, in addition, energy absorption behavior of FDM parts under compression is also investigated. This study investigates the effects of using biodiesel from Mesua ferrea (BD20) and chromium oxide (Cr2O3) nanoparticles in diesel engines. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) model and artificial neural networks (ANNs) were developed to make precise predictions of the operating parameters. The amount of Cr2O3 nanoparticles was set at 80 mg/L, and surfactant and dispersant were applied to the nanoparticles in the same amounts. The study was carried out with different compression ratios and load conditions. The parameters evaluated were engine load, fuel samples and compression ratio as inputs and BTE, BSFC, CP, NHRR, CO, UHC, NO x and smoke opacity as outputs. The addition of the QPAN80 additive at the same dosage of 80 mg/L together with the BD20 fuel blend containing Cr2O3 at a concentration of 80 mg/L resulted in a significant increase in BTE by 16.58 % and a reduction in BSFC by 0.58 %. While the NHRR increased by 85.40 %, the CP increased sharply by 24.47 %. The CO concentration decreased by 31.85 %, the UHC concentration by 22.22 %, the NO x concentration by 6.16 % and the smoke emission by 62.61 %. For each output parameter, the correlation coefficient (R 2), calculated using ANNs and RSM was between 0.96 and 0.98. Thermoplastic sandwich structures are widely utilized in engineering fields due to their high specific strength and stiffness, recyclability, and impact toughness. The face‐core interface strength is crucial to maximize the performance benefits of sandwich structures. Two sizes of corrugated sandwich panels with hot‐melt bonding and resistance welding connection methods were fabricated. The mechanical properties of sandwich panels were compared using a combination of experimental, numerical, and analytical investigation. Edgewise compression (EC) and 3‐point bending (3 PB) tests were conducted to obtain load–displacement curves and investigate different failure modes of sandwich panels. The peak edge compression and bending loads of the resistance welded structures were 42% and 92% higher, respectively, and the face‐core interface was always well‐connected compared to those of the hot‐melt bonding. The results indicate that the resistance welding method can be utilized as a core bonding technique for thermoplastic composite sandwich structures and has great potential for aerospace application. AbstractNowadays, the use of deep foundations in various civil engineering projects, especially in marine and coastal structures, has been increasing. One type of deep foundations are helical pile foundations, which have gained significant attention in recent decades. This research investigates the load–displacement behavior of different helical pile configurations regarding geometry, i.e., helix diameter and spacing ratio (S/D) in two different soil densities under pullout and compressive loading conditions via the FCV-AUT device. Babolsar sand from the southern coast of the Caspian Sea was utilized for advancing this study. Additionally, four full-scale pile tests were conducted on the Caspian Sea coast under both grouted and non-grouted conditions for pullout and compressive loading. The results indicate that increasing the helix diameter, soil density, and S/D ratio enhances the compressive load-bearing capacity. However, in tensile loading, the ultimate load decreases with an increase in the spacing ratio. Furthermore, the grouting process in the three-helix pile exhibits better performance compared to the two-helix pile, potentially increasing the pile capacity up to 30%. In conclusion, the results obtained from the FCV device, utilizing scale theory, have been generalized to the large-scale pile test results in the field, are representative of in agreement and compatible. The commonly used aluminum–copper alloys in industry are mainly rolled plates and extruded or drawn bars. The aluminum–copper alloys' anisotropy generated in the manufacturing process is unfavorable for subsequent applications. Its underlying mechanism shall be interpreted from a microscopic perspective. This paper conducted the loading simulation on Al–4%Cu alloy crystals at the microscopic scale with molecular dynamics technology. Uniaxial tension and compression loading were carried out along three orientations: X-< 1 ¯ 12 >, Y-< 1 1 ¯ 1 >, and Z-<110>. It analyzes the micro-mechanisms that affect the performance changes of aluminum–copper alloys through the combination of stress–strain curves and different organizational analysis approaches. As shown by the results, the elastic modulus and yield strength are the highest under tension along the < 1 1 ¯ 1 > direction. Such is the case for the reasons below: The close-packed plane of atoms ensures large atomic binding forces. In addition, the Stair-rod dislocation forms a Lomer–Cottrell dislocation lock, which has a strengthening effect on the material. The elastic modulus and yield strength are the smallest under tension along the <110> direction, and the periodic arrangement of HCP atom stacking faults serves as the main deformation mechanism. This is because the atomic arrangement on the <110> plane is relatively loose, which tends to cause atomic misalignment. When compressed in different directions, the plastic deformation mechanism is mainly dominated by dislocations and stacking faults. When compressed along the <110> direction, it has a relatively high dislocation density and the maximum yield strength. That should be attributed to the facts below. As the atomic arrangement of the <110> plane itself was not dense originally, compression loading would cause an increasingly tighter arrangement. In such a case, the stress could only be released through dislocations. Low carbon and high performance have become key trends in the development of construction materials. Understanding the mechanism by which curing conditions affect the mechanical properties of high-ductility geopolymer concrete (HDGC) is of significant importance. This study investigated three sealing curing temperatures (room temperature, 45 °C, and 60 °C) and four curing durations (1 day, 3 days, 5 days, and 7 days), while considering two final curing ages (7 days and 28 days) to explore their effects on the axial tensile and compressive properties of HDGC. The results showed that both 45 °C and 60 °C could improve the brittle failure of HDGC under axial compressive loading. However, curing at 60 °C and for durations longer than 1 day in an oven would catalyze the formation of eight-faced zeolite crystals within the slag–fly ash geopolymer matrix, and it could weaken the matrix's pore structure and subsequently affect the material's later strength development. Nevertheless, oven heat curing enhanced the bridging effect between the fibers and the matrix, partially compensating for the reduction in the initial tensile strength of HDGC. This follows the pseudo-strain-hardening material's saturation cracking criterion to enhance the strain-hardening behavior of HDGC and improve its tensile energy absorption capacity. A curing condition of 45 °C for 5 days is recommended to maximize the ductility of HDGC. Co-continuous interlocking lattice structures usually present superior compressive properties and energy absorption characteristics. In this study, co-continuous interlocking polydimethylsiloxane/polylactic acid (PDMS/PLA) lattice composites were designed with different strut diameters, and successfully manufactured by combining the fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique and the infiltration method. This fabrication method can realize the change and control of structure parameters. The effects of the strut diameter on the compressive properties and energy absorption behavior of PDMS/PLA lattice composites were investigated by using quasi-static compression tests. The compressive properties of the co-continuous interlocking PDMS/PLA lattice composites can be adjusted in a narrow density range by a linear correlation. The energy absorption density of the co-continuous interlocking PDMS/PLA lattice composites increases with the increase in the PLA strut diameter and presents a higher efficiency peak and wider plateau region. The PLA lattice acts as a skeleton and plays an important role in bearing the compressive load and in energy absorption. The indexes of the compressive properties/energy absorption characteristics and PLA volume fraction of co-continuous interlocking PDMS/PLA lattice composites show linear relationships in logarithmic coordinates. Study Design. Biomechanical cadaveric study. Objective. The goal of this study was to analyze the effects of an endoscopic transpedicular approach with different drill diameters (6 and 8 mm) and compare them with the intact native side. In addition, the influence of bone quality on the resistance of the pedicle was investigated. Summary of Background Data. Clinical studies have repeatedly highlighted the benefits of endoscopic transpedicular decompression for downmigrated lumbar disc herniations. However, the biomechanical effects on pedicle stability have not been studied up to now. Materials and Methods. Twenty-four vertebras originating from four fresh-frozen cadavers were tested under uniaxial compression load in a ramp-to-failure test: (1) the tunneled pedicle on one side, and (2) the native pedicle on the other side. Twelve lumbar vertebrae were assigned to drill diameter of 6 mm and the other 12 to diameter of 8 mm. Results. The median ratio of sustained force for the operated side compared with the intact contralateral side is equal to 74% (63-88) for both drill diameters combined. An 8 mm transpedicular approach recorded an axial resistance of 77% (60-88) compared with the intact contralateral side (P=0.002). A 6 mm approach resulted in an axial resistance of 72% (66-84) compared with the intact opposite side (P=0.01). No significant difference between the two different drill diameters was recorded (P= 1). For all three subgroups (intact, 8 mm, 6 mm) the Hounsfield units-values and the absolute resistance force showed significant correlations (intact: p=0.859; P< 0.001; 8 mm: p= 0.902; P<0.001; 6 mm: p=0.835; P<0.001). Conclusion. The transpedicular approach significantly reduces the axial resistance force of the pedicle, which may lead to pedicle fracture. A large number of experimental studies have demonstrated that the permeability and damage of rock are not constant but rather functionally dependent on stresses or stress-induced deformation. Neglecting the influence of damage and permeability evolution on rock mechanics and sealing properties can result in an overestimation of the safety and stability of underground engineering, leading to an incomplete assessment of the risks associated with surrounding rock failure. To address this, the damage and permeability evolution functions of rock under compression were derived through a combination of experimental results and theoretical analysis, unifying the relationship between porosity and permeability in both porous media flow and fractured flow. Based on this, a fluid–solid coupled seepage model considering rock damage and permeability evolution was proposed. More importantly, this model was utilized to investigate the behavior of deformation, damage, and permeability, as well as their coupled effects. The model's validity was verified by comparing its numerical results with experimental data. The analysis results show that the evolution of permeability and porosity resulted from a competitive interaction between effective mean stress and stress-induced damage. When the effective mean stress was dominant, the permeability tended to decrease; otherwise, it followed an increasing trend. The damage evolution was primarily related to stress- and pressure-induced crack growth and irreversible deformation. Additionally, the influence of the seepage pressure on the strength, damage, and permeability of the investigated rock was evaluated. The model results reveal the damage and permeability evolution of the rock under compression, which has a certain guiding significance for the stability and safety analysis of rock in underground engineering. FEA simulations are employed to analyze the nail's behavior under compressive loads, considering realistic conditions such as the 95th percentile of human body weight. To accurately characterize the damage of rock-like materials under simultaneous or alternating tensile and compressive loading, a dynamic damage constitutive model for rock-like materials based on elastic tensile strain is developed by integrating the classical compressive plastic damage model and the tensile elastic damage model. The model is based on the Holmquist–Johnson–Cook (HJC) and Kuszmaul (KUS) models, categorizing the element stress state into tensile and compressive states through positive and negative elastic volumetric strain. It utilizes elastic tensile strain to enhance the calculation method for tensile cracks, determining the tensile strength of the principal direction based on the contribution rate of tensile principal stress for uniaxial/multiaxial loading. Additionally, it establishes a maximum elastic tensile strain rate function to rectify the model's effect on the tensile strain rate. Through the LS-DYNA subroutine development, the model proficiently delineates the distribution of ring-shaped cracks on the frontal side and strip-shaped cracks on the rear side of the reinforced concrete slab subjected to impact loading. The microstructure evolution of stress-induced martensite (SIM) α ″ and mechanical twins in metastable β Ti-1023 alloy under different strains during tensile and compressive deformation was investigated by the help of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The results demonstrate that there is no obvious SIM α ″ stress platform in the compressive stress–strain curve; however, it exhibits a higher yield stress and strain hardening capability than tensile deformation although SIM α ″ and α ″ martensite twinning are the major deformation products that appeared in metastable β Ti-1023 alloy under both tensile and compressive loading. In fact, SIM α ″ is preferentially activated in well-oriented β grains at the beginning of deformation, and those activated variants have the largest phase transformation strain along the loading direction affected by the loading stress state. As the accumulated deformation strain increases, SIM α ″ is reoriented to form a martensite co-deformation region with twin structures through {111}α″ type I and <211>α″ type II twinning systems. Then, the primary lath α ″ martensite is consumed, resulting in the development of the {130} <310>α″ and {110} < 110 > α ″ deformation twinning inside the martensite. In comparison with tensile deformation, compressive deformation produces a higher volume fraction of SIM α ″ and α ″ martensite twins in β grains, along with a higher density of dislocations in the α ″ martensite and the coordinated deformation region of the martensite. This paper presents experimental and numerical investigations on the behavior of eccentrically loaded lightweight aggregate concrete encased steel (LWACES) columns after exposing to elevated temperatures. Sixteen concrete encased steel (CES) columns were considered in the study, 12 of which were exposed to elevated temperature then eccentrically loaded up to failure at different eccentricity ratios. The effect of temperature on the load–displacement relationships, failure load, and failure modes of the concrete encased steel (CES) columns was monitored and evaluated. Experimental results have shown that as the temperature increases, the load bearing capacity of the CES columns decreased. It has also been showed that, at high temperature, the normal‐weight concrete encased steel (NWCES) columns experienced larger degradation of the load bearing capacity compared to that of LWACES columns. Also, this study presents a numerical simulation of the behavior of LWACES columns at elevated temperatures with eccentric compressive load. The numerical model was implemented in conducting parametric study to understand the effect of temperature distribution, concrete cover, eccentricity ratio, and high temperature levels on the behavior of the thermally exposed (CES) columns. Numerical results have revealed that, at temperature value of 500°C, the ultimate capacity of LWACES with eccentricity ratios of 0.75, and 1 has decreased by 17%, and 23%, respectively, compared to that of the column with eccentricity ratio of 0.5. The effect of biaxial compressive loading on hollow steel box column (HSBC) and concrete-filled steel box column (CFSBC) sections wrapped with low-modulus carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) was studied. The CFSBC and HSBC sections were simulated using Abaqus finite-element software and validated using available experimental data. Biaxial compressive loading was considered for different eccentricities (i.e. eccentricity to depth ratio (e/D) ratio of zero to 0.32). The results indicated that, for CFRP-wrapped HSBCs at low eccentricity (e/D = 0.08), compact and non-compact sections were effective at carrying higher load, while a slender section was effective for concentric loads. For the CFRP-wrapped CFSBCs, compact and non-compact sections were effective for all the eccentric loads (e/D = 0–0.32). It was also found that the low-modulus CFRP layer wrapping the CFSBC sections had no significant effect on strength. In this research, an experimental biomechanics construct was developed to reveal the mechanics of distal tibial fracture by submitting synthetic tibiae to cyclic loading, resulting in a combined stress state due to axial compression and bending loads. The synthetic tibia was fixed at the knee but allowed to rotate in the coronal and sagittal planes at the ankle. The first three loading regimes lasted for 4000 cycles/each, and the final until ultimate failure. After 12k±80 cycles, the observed failure patterns closely resembled distal tibial fractures. The collected data during cyclic loading were fitted into a phenomenological model to deduce the time-dependent response of the synthetic tibiae. Images were also collected and analyzed using digital image correlation to deduce the full-field state of strain. The latter revealed that longitudinal strain contours extended in the proximal–distal direction. The transverse strain contours exemplified a medial-to-lateral distribution, attributed to the combined contributions of the Poisson's effect and the flexural deformation from axial and bending components of the applied load, respectively. The experimental construct, full-field characterization, and data analysis approaches can be extended to elucidate the effect of different fixation devices on the overall mechanical behavior of the bone and validate computational models in future research. The stress–strain behavior of graded glass fiber reinforced concrete (GGFRC) is a crucial factor in its performance and appropriateness for diverse applications. In the present study, experimental and analytical methods were used to develop a model for the stress–strain behavior of GGFRC under uniaxial loading. The experimental program is designed to investigate the impact of mono glass fibers (3, 6, 12, and 20 mm) with varying volume fractions (0.1%–0.5%) and graded glass fibers (combinations of 3 + 6 + 12 + 20 mm) on the behavior of concrete of M50 grade. By grading glass fiber lengths in the concrete, GGFRC's pre‐peak strength and post‐peak deformation have increased, allowing the composite to control the various scales of cracking. A uniaxial compressive stress–strain model has been developed utilizing the fiber reinforcing index to predict the stress–strain curves of GGFRC in compression. The fiber reinforcing index, which is a measure of the quantity of fiber reinforcement in the material, is used as a variable in the current model to observe how it impacts the material's behavior. This would help evaluate the material's behavior under uniaxial compressive loading conditions and then use that data to develop a mathematical model that can predict the material's response under other conditions. Vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) arrays are moderately dense ensembles of nominally vertical carbon nanotubes (CNT) tethered to a rigid substrate. Variations in their synthesis protocols translate to largely unpredictable fluctuations in height, density, tortuosity and stiffness of the individual CNTs. Consequently, experimental studies on compression of these VACNT arrays exhibit a variety of responses. Moreover, many experimental studies report concerted buckling behaviour of the CNTs under compression. Numerical modelling of such coordinated behaviour in VACNT arrays poses many challenges. Each CNT can be modelled as a flexible beam capable of large deformations, allowing for tortuous initial shapes, mutual and/or self interactions that can be repulsive or attractive and periodic boundary conditions. Confining ourselves to a set of minimally realistic 2-dimensional parametric studies, we attempt to address how geometry/property fluctuations in an array of interacting columns leads to different types of collective compressive responses. We model each CNT as a geometrically exact beam using an established framework. A novel contact formulation is employed to model their mutual van der Waals interactions. In all cases, we capture coordinated buckling and are able to negotiate the response in the post-buckling stages. We first model ideal vertical arrays of defect-free CNTs and then discuss the effects of fluctuations in height, density, stiffness and tortuosity on their compressive behaviour. Additive manufacturing (AM) offers new possibilities to fabricate and design lightweight lattice materials. Due to the superior mechanical properties of these lattice structures, they have the potential to replace honeycombs as cores in sandwich panels. In addition to the advantage of the integral fabrication thanks to AM, additively manufactured lattice core sandwich panels may be also used as heat exchangers, enabling a multifunctional use of the core. To ensure a reliable and safe structure, the mechanical response of lattice core sandwich panels under given load conditions must be predictable. In conventional sandwich panels subjected to compressive loads, the sandwich's global buckling and the face sheets' local buckling are the dominant failure modes. In constrast, core strut buckling may be the critical failure mode in lattice core sandwich panels. Therefore, an analytical 2D model to predict the local buckling of lattice core struts is considered in this study. Furthermore, the critical load for global buckling is obtained based on the first-order shear deformation theory. Thus, the transition from local buckling to global buckling depending on the length-to-thickness ratio is captured by the presented model. In cold regions, geological rock materials are prone to freeze–thaw damage, potentially impacting the failure behaviors of the rock. However, the quantitative influence of freeze–thaw damage on the cracking characteristics of rock has not been well understood. Herein, the influence of freeze–thaw damage on the cracking characteristics of sandstone under compression loading is quantitatively studied. The results show that, with the increase of freeze–thaw cycle, the increased pore is dominated by the large pore, the maximum equivalent radius of the throat is increased to 4721.13 µm, and the longitudinal connectivity of the pores becomes greater. In addition, the peak strength and elastic modulus of sandstone decrease by 74.8% and 57.1%, respectively, while the ductility of sandstone increases significantly. Moreover, more cracks are appeared in the failed sample with the increase of freeze–thaw damage, consequently, the fractal dimension of sandstone cracks gradually decreases with increasing freeze–thaw cycles. And flake-derived cracks are observed in the case of high freeze–thaw cycles, which could be assigned to the generation of transcrystalline cracks. Furthermore, a conceptual model concerning the influence of initial microcracks on the cracking characteristics of rock material is proposed. Background Context: This study's purpose was to evaluate the biomechanical performance of plate–nail and dual-plate fixation for the treatment of AO/OTA 41-C2 tibial plateau fractures. Methods: Twenty synthetic tibias were selected and randomly divided into a plate–nail group (n = 10) and a dual-plate group (n = 10). After the artificial tibias were osteotomized to simulate AO/OTA 41-C2 tibial plateau fractures in both groups, the plate–nail and the dual-plate methods, respectively, were used for fixation, and then axial compression loading, three-point bending, torsion, and axial failure tests were carried out. The data of each group were recorded and statistically analyzed. Results: In the axial compression test, the average stiffness of the plate–nail group was higher than that of the dual-plate group (p < 0.05). The displacement generated in the plate–nail group was significantly smaller than that in the dual-plate group (p < 0.05). In the resisting varus test, the stress of the plate–nail group was significantly higher than that of the dual-plate group (p < 0.05). In the resisting valgus test, the stress of the plate–nail group was slightly higher than that of the dual-plate group, but the difference was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). In the static torsion test, the load applied to the plate–nail group was smaller than that of the dual-plate group when rotated to 5° (p < 0.05). In the axial compression failure test, the average ultimate load of the plate–nail group was significantly higher than that of the dual-plate group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The treatment of AO/OTA 41-C2 tibial plateau fractures with plate–nail fixation is superior to that with dual-plate fixation in resisting axial stress and preventing tibial varus deformity, while dual-plate fixation has better resisting torsional ability. Concrete is obviously affected by the loading strain rate, and concrete exists in the state of shear multiaxial stress in practical engineering. Studying the dynamic response of concrete under multiaxial shear states facilitates comprehensive analysis of its actual failure behavior under complex loading conditions, thereby establishing an experimental foundation for precisely formulating dynamic constitutive models of concrete. Therefore, in this study, five axial compression ratios (0, 0.138, 0.207, 0.276, and 0.414 fc) and four strain rates (10−5/s , 10−4/s , 10−3/s , and 10−2/s) were considered. A servohydraulic machine for compression and shear was applied to conduct experimental research on the shear multiaxial dynamic mechanical properties of concrete. Different failure patterns and shear mechanical characteristic values of concrete under different loading conditions were obtained from the experiments. The following conclusions were mainly drawn through comparative analysis: as the axial compression ratio increases, oblique cracks are gradually formed in the parallel shear direction of the concrete, accompanied by a small amount of concrete spalling. The strain rate parameter has no significant influence on the apparent failure pattern of concrete in the parallel shear direction; moreover, as the axial compression ratio increases, the ranges of increase in shear stress and residual stress for concrete under different strain rates are 357.02% to 291.65%. The increase of strain rate gradually leads to a decreasing trend of shear stress for concrete under the influence of the axial compression ratio; as the strain rate increases, the range of increase in shear stress for concrete under different axial compression ratios is 21.08% to 33.81%. Overall, the increase of axial compression ratio leads to a decreasing trend of shear stress for concrete under the influence of strain rate. Based on the compression-shear relation and the principal stress space, the combined dynamic failure criterion of plain concrete is proposed by considering the effect of strain rate, and the corresponding stress mechanism is analyzed. Full-scale axial load tests were performed on five screw injection piles founded in medium-dense to dense sand at a site in Delft, the Netherlands. Each pile was instrumented with distributed fiber-optic sensors along its full length, giving detailed insights into the shaft and base response under compression loading. The paper focuses on the pile base response and combines the test results with a newly compiled database of instrumented load tests on screw displacement piles in sand. Given the range of screw displacement piles on the market, the influence of different installation methods and pile geometries on the base resistance can be assessed through the database. In summary, the analysis showed that all screw displacement pile types tended to mobilize base capacities similar to bored or nondisplacement piles. A cylindrical structure used in a space launch vehicle should endure the compressive load and it must satisfy the requirement of compressive strength. For the light-weight of the structure and improving the performance of launch vehicle, a cylindrical structure reinforced by composite lattice can be used. Therefore, a compressive strength prediction technique of the cylindrical composite lattice structure is required. In this paper, the failure criterion was proposed using the compression test of a composite lattice subelement and a simple finite element analysis for the subelement. The failure criterion was introduced using the effect of the out-of-plane and in-plane bending deformation of the rib constituting the grid of structure on the compressive strength. The subelement specimen was prepared from two different structures and the compression test was performed using several fixture jigs which can generate various deformation of the specimen. The test results and finite element model were used to examine the effect of out-of-plane and in-plane bending deformation of the rib on the compressive strength and the failure criterion which can predict the compressive strength was derived using the relationships between each parameter. The compressive failure load of the cylindrical composite lattice structure was predicted by using the proposed method and the validity and accuracy of this method were verified through a comparison of the predicted results with the test results.
